Even when my phone is 'idle' it seems to be communicating over 3g. Is is normal or is there something I can do, I'm looking to tweak my phone to optimize battery life.
I've already gone through the guide telling me how to optimize my battery. Does anyone have any additional tips on how to optimize battery? Thanks in advance.
Did you shut off autosync for the Facebook for HTC Sense? Seems that thing keeps trying to update I noticed that mine was running like crazy until I shut that off.
I was having same issue and found that the people app was causing data usage. After I killed it data stopped, app still runs fine when launched but seems to only happen on first boot.

I'm having the same issue, i used 300mb of data today and i really didn't even use my phone all that often. I have fresh .3 and full root with nand unlocked. Now is there an app that will monitor bandwidth usage s o i can see which app is chewing my bandwidth? As odd as it seams i think this is just a bug, i tried to capture data use when the 3g data lite was on but it showed minimal (under 60kb in 30 min)usage, its really kind of strange. for now i just turned off data.
On another note, I'm noticing something very very odd with my phone... even after i kill WIFI tethering app my pc is still connected and i can still use data, its odd.
Alright, just went through the process of switching my phone to use EVRC-B and then Voice 13k. I also changed the ACCOLC to 2, and set EVRC-B to Enable.
After I did that, I found out that audio streaming apps (Shoutcast via XiiaLive, and Pandora) were no longer working. XiiaLive would connect, buffer, and then say connection dropped. Pandora just sat there, acting ready to play music, but when I pressed play, nothing happened.
I then tried iHeartRadio, Retro Radio, Cherry Rplayer, StreamFurious, and YouTube. None of them but YouTube worked either. I changed my settings back (EVRC, EVRC-B disabled, ACCOLC to 5) and rebooted multiple times. Still getting the same issue!
Just want to know if anyone's had this problem and knows of a solution before I do a data wipe.
EDIT: Just to confirm, everything works over WiFi. This is JUST with 3G cell connection (I have no 4G to test). Also, I do not believe it's a network issue, as I can listen to some of the same channels on my laptop (DI.fm/SKY.fm for example), and Sprint's pulling down web browsing and YouTube just fine.
Well, did a factory reset from recovery and wiped dalvik cache. Everything is working again.

I found a solution and put it in the EVRC-B thread. Basically, just opening the EPST program causes this. So if you're going to change the settings, you have to do a nandroid backup, change the settings, and restore. So far there's just no way around this bug since Sprint/HTC doesn't care about providing fixes our support to modders or anyone who uses non-default settings/software, even if it's software they gave you.

Wow, this is awesome and applies to my case. Indeed, I accessed EPST to change my Slot Cycle Index every time I flashed so I guess that could have caused the issue.
I spent the better part of yesterday trying to figure this out. I did a backup of all my apps and data via Titanium Backup. Wiped the rom, cache, dalvik cache, reflashed DC, and then ran the restore in Titanium Backup. As each app was reinstalling, I would test the streaming radio. All the apps restored and streaming was still working over 3G. However, as soon as the system data was restored (the last step in the Titanium Backup restore process) and I restarted the system, streaming stopped working over 3G. So I figured it must be some random system setting that is restored and must be causing this.
I repeated the whole procedure again (e.g., backup, wipe, re-flash, restore, etc.). However, this time I backed-up and restored apps via Titanium Backup (no system data) and I used MyBackup to back-up and restore SMS, Call log, and dictionary. Using this method, streaming over 3G is now working.
I'll run a nandroid backup now so I won't run into this issue again. Thanks again for posting back here and closing the loop!
Thought I would add to this. As usual, nothing is consistent. I was just in the data menu changing a bunch of things (EVRC-B, SLC, ACCOLC, and WiMax settings). Rebooted after changes and everything is working great. Streaming Pandora no problem, and the wimax changes fixed the ping-ponging connection.
I am on my 3rd GS3. The issue I am having is that my Navigation programs (default and telenav) will search and search for satellites, but won't connect. But when I restart my phone, it will work fine for a day or two then back to no connection.
I have spoken to Sprint and this is an unreported problem... until me. So, Sprint will replace my device. I am unrooted and completely stock. I know that Sprint is in Nashville, TN working on installing the 4gLTE towers. It isn't live yet, but they will turn on and off periodically.
I have searched these threads and I have not heard of any others with this issue. My first GS3 was rooted, but I have not done the two replacements. This has only occurred on an unrooted device.
Has anyone heard of this issue and know a resolution? I am considering rooting again to see if that is a fix. This is not a horrible issue, it is much better than a device that won't boot, but any help is greatly appreciated.

Currently Rooted running the people's rom (3.06) GPS works flawlessly. I have tested and used Scout (By Telenav) Telenav, and Google Maps with no issues at all (tested in FL, MS, And parts of AL during my drive there and back) Haven't had any issues tho.
Mine worked fine while unrooted but started not initializing for startup apps that needed it after i rooted it. I would have to go to the app directly for it to start the GPS. Otherwise the app would continuously look for location. Unfortunately I haven't been able to narrow it down to any one Rom or kernel. Any one else with this issue?

I have the same issue but haven't been able to figure out the cause either. Notice it mostly when I set my destination from my house, and wifi connected, then change location after leaving, and phone has kicked over to 3G.

Before I returned my phone for another replacement, I decided to delete all of the apps that I had downloaded. I then rebooted my phone. After 2 days, it worked fine. I then began installing apps one by one. I figured the problem had to be app specific and only apps that use gps. There was one of two apps I decided was the culprit: Facebook or JuiceDefender. I installed Facebook and it worked fine for 2 days. Ample time for the issue to appear. I have figured out that all along JuiceDefender is the problem. It is shutting off GPS like it is supposed to, but not turning it on when it is supposed to. The problem started when I reverted to stock and took the OTA Android update. I am just embarrassed that it took until now to look at the apps as the problem and not the phone. I am going to contact JD and let them know what I have found. I hope there can be a fix, JD really works well... except for my gps!
Anyways, look at apps first as the problem child before running to a repair shop (like I did!) .
Hope this helps others...

JD is designed to disable data connection to conserve battery, You can set it for a threshold where it will keep the connection alive if it's transmitting information back and forth.. (Must have Ultimate for that i believe) So if your disabling the data connection, then it'll kill GPS.
It is set on balanced. That is why I didn't think of juice defender first. Never had this issue until android updated.

I am having the same problem. My GPS will work, but for me, it's only for about 15 mins or so (while in an App that starts it). Then, if I stay in the app, it will just lose connection. If I exit the App, and the GPS turns off, then when I go back it, it will not turn on again. It isn't like it is searching and it doesn't get a signal...it never turns on. The only thing to bring it back is to reboot. I noticed it while on a custom ROM (TPR) and thought it must be that, so I flashed back to stock. Still the same thing. I then tried doing a factory reset. Still not working properly. Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks in advance.

I took it in to Sprint they said it was the bad antenna and will give me a refurbish phone. This phone is less than a month old and why I will take a refurbish phone. Like I bought a brand new car and come in for a fix and they took me to the use car lot for a factory certificated car.
So I sent to Samsung and they claimed replacing a part and got the phone back, same problem is still happening.
Anyone can help us on this. It seems a common issue to a few of us.
Here is a simple GPS fix that works well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201668
OK guys major issue here.
GS3 rooted running AOKP variant.
Yesterday suddenly the phone stopped using the data connection. No GPS, no sync, no twitter updates etc. When I ran speed test, I clearly had a connection and my account is good. I reflashed several times and couldn't get account to sync at all. Then I flashed a 4.1 ROM and it sucked, so came back to the 4.2 last night and it appeared to be work again. Just finished app restore through mybackup pro and after restart, here we are again, my account will not sync, even when connected to WiFi. What's going on here?!
When I say my account won't sync, I mean its saying its Friday January 2 and the time starts at 1:00! Every time I reboot!
Haven't seen this one before! Sounds like what happens on a computer when the CMOS battery dies. Definitely sounds like a hardware problem to me. Maybe a bad component like a capacitor or chip?
Are you still under warranty?
Because of the data issue, check if your imei is intact in Settings. I do think it'll be hw related though.

I rooted and installed a jedi rom about a year ago. In December my cell signal started getting spotty. I reverted to stock 4.1.2. Thankfully I was able to use my phone on wifi calling and that worked for a while. I replaced my antenna cable because it had a kink. The cable I got came with a new charging port which oddly went bad shortly after changing the cable, so I replaced that too.
Later the phone started having other issues, trouble playing back audio, it started skipping like a cd player. Then wifi would work but if I left the wifi network it would freeze the wifi signal requiring reboot to disconnect from the old network, cycling wifi alone wouldn't work, didn't ever turn off. Somewhere near this time wifi calling wouldn't even produce enough strength to make a phone call. Would sound like bad signal.
Then yesterday wifi wouldn't turn on after a reboot. Looking it up I found a suggestion to take out battery, sim card and sd card then hold the power button for 30 seconds. This worked and the post said something about it being caused from undervolting. I decided to start hacking at the phone more figuring how much worse can it get?
I started with a benchmark test, and when I compared my results to noye 2 listed on antutu the only major difference was ram, which I scored 660 about half what it should be.
Everything else was within a few hundred.
I updated to 4.3 stock with firmware from samfirmware (something like that) and had my first phone call in months!
But then it lost signal again. Then wifi again.
Deciding to keep going I tried rerooting, failed, finally got philz bootloader and new jedi master x 4.3. Installed that and had selinux issue finally solved that now wifi juat stopped being able to turn on. Tried power button trick, didnt work. Wifi still wont turn on and mobile networks still dont work.
I wrote this offline then tried wifi again and it worked.
Anyone have any idea what's going on? Anything I could fry to fix this?
Ok so suggested posts when I posted is leading me to try things. I have an empty efs folder. I just wanted this posted due to signal issues atm.
I have an old old nandroid im going to try restoring atm
So my old nandroids didn't work, so I went to my backup after this happened. I still have an empty efs folder, and no backup. Wifi is more steady however. I've tried numerous things and cannot seem to recreate any of the files.
I found some random files in the efs folder when using root explorer, but no nv data.
Nothing is being generated on reboot or rom flash except the folder structure.
Under the status in my phone my IMEI number is intact.
I'm still under the impression it's missing files in my efs folder, but I've also come across some posts stating that some phones don't have an nv data bin file?
Can anyone point me in the right direction? It seems like every google search of a term ends in failure, and a new term to search.
