O2 xda 2s endless problem help......rom etc.. - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Hi all, well, i have the newest version of the o2 rom installed on my xda2s that i downloaded from o2 website. now my first question is this,
1) can i downgrade to a previous operating system and if yes, then how and where can i download it, if not then i need help with the following....
2) after a hard reset or a clean install with the new rom, after the o2 active stuff has installed, my xda2s seems to crash all the time, now i noticed it too much 2 weeks after i got it, and sent it to the o2 shop for them to have a look at it, and didnt get it back for a few weeks... NOT A GOOD START.. i got it back and had an older version of windows 2003 second edition installed, so it looked like they just wiped it and put an earlier(more stable) version back on.... now i decided to take a chance and tried the windows mobile 2005 but no luck, so had to download and install from o2.co.uk
and now im back to square 1. crashes 5-6 times a day
3) also relating to the above, if i hard reset or clean install, before o2 active stuff is installed, i have a digital clock in the corner of my screen top right, after o2 active install its gone, i cant get it back, Any ideas how to solve this, its doing my head in as i like to look at the time on it....
i tried the hard reset and switch off before anything installs and also the corporate option too, i couldnt connect to internet and also couldnt send text doing that, and i do actually like the o2 stuff...... i edont use o2 active, but like the battery plugin and the o2 themes and phone skin.
is there another way round this or am i just buggered beyond help????
at least if i can download any previous versions of the o2 version o2 windows mobile 2003 2nd edition, that would be great!!!
anyway chaps, please help
take care guys.....
joey.

Mine was just the same until I removed all the O2 crap, can't even remember the last time I had to even soft reset but guessing at least a month!
Trick is to put machine into Corporate mode after doing a hard reset (use 0506 when asked for code) you will then get a clean WM2003SE install with NO O2 rubbish. You still even get the O2 GPRS/MMS settings etc..
Worked for me and several others on here

i could quite be an odd FM then, cos this i tried after reading and trying things i see in these forums, this forum is by far the best i found an i plan on staying, I even work for o2 and they can even be bothered to help me
i tried clean install by removing battery before any crap is installed, this worked but no settings, i tried corporate mode, no joy, also in corporate mode my mms and txt and gprs settings were there, but would not connect, so im back to the full whack, with o2 active, I have to admit, i like the o2 active and all the skins and stuff, so id like not to loose them, i tried corporate all day yesterday and noticed that my battery lasted twice as long. so maybe corporate is the best option i dunno, but i really wanna get to a previous version and try that, so ...........

O2 RELEASE ROM UPGRADE FOR XDA2S

I have been sent a link from O2 Data Support for downloading the new XDA2s ROM upgrade, which apparently will fix the Bluetooth problems.
The link is...
http://www.sourceo2.com/O2_Developers/Devices/O2_Xda_II/XdaIIs_launchROM.htm
Haven't done anything with it yet, but thought you guys might like to know...
regards,
Guy
Hmm I wonder if I can use this update on my O2 Xda2s.
I got it in Malasyia.
Noel
I installed it on my UK XDA 2s, I will report back later.
In the PDF it's saying that this version is only for devices sold by O² UK or O² Ireland... Not sure if I should give it a go on my version..
Noel
I think I might wait and see what others say about this before I install it myself. So many that have it already say it is great but then you hear others say it has caused problems.
That post is the launch rom, not an upgrade. LMAO It is intended for people who attempt to flash the XDA IIs with a different vendors rom and screw it up.
Mike
Nope, its not, click the link. O2 are obviously just too lazy to create a new page for a new rom!
Nigel
HAHA you are correct!!! LMAO oh well.
Hi..have installed the update..and have encountered several problems...was wondering if anyone could help me.
I hate the fact that the clock has disappeared from the top right so whe u are using applications its no longer visible. Is there any way of bring it back?
Also now when you click the o2 at the top it dosn't give the active connections anymore. Therefore whats the quickest way to disconnect the gprs? and is there any way of bringing that back to how it used to be?
I have also had to reset my phone more often that I had to before.
Was wondering if anyone had encountered the same problems and how to resolve them.
Thanks so much...
Bit the bullet and upgraded last night, wifi still works and as I use Corporate mode I don't get any issues with 02 active, icons or clocks. All seems normal, so far!
Have to agree with Dave. I finally bit the bullet and installed the update last night. Don't like the new O2 active and put the clock straight back with the registry key.
Other than the missing clock and poor O2 Active software which I never use anyway no real problems. Tom Tom still works fine with my Bluetooth GPS receiver. WIFI still works fine with WPA security and everything locked down on the access point.
Still receive SMS notification and its nice that you're not limited to 70 char when using ' in sms text messages now!
All ok.
har5ha:
Just get the old O2 active back. To to this, head to the xda-dev FTP site, find the old O2 XDA IIs extended rom, pull it, find the file install.ARM.CAB (O2 active)
Sync/backup yr stuff then hard reset the XDA IIs, and let it do its stuff. When leave it to install the extended rom, but be ready to soft reset it when you get asked the 'corporate/personal' question (you'll have to watch the screen since there is a timeout). Once it reboots, copy install.ARM.CAB to the machine, and execute it. It will soft reset yr device at the end.
I use 2 things from O2 active, the battery plugin and the O2 icon to kill connections. Shame billy did not think to include a disconnect dialogue as well really (he put on in for vpn).
There might be a way to install old over new, dunno. I tried and it locks loads of files (even if you prevent it from loading).
Nigel
thanks Nigel...I ended up installing gb soft for the disconnect button.
So its ok...still getting loads of crashing. I think am going to reinstall it and then use corporate mode..hopefully it will crash less!
can I get an update on xda iis rom update
Hi all, I'm still new to this whole thing but reading and researching all I can. Don't have an xda iis as of yet, but on the high streets waiting list. I like the phone and in one way, can't wait, but don't want problems when I get it, especially at the price. Can anyone on o2 that has purchased their phone from o2 let me know how you are getting on...problems...ect, before and after the update.? To be honest, I'm a bit afraid to bite the bullet and get one right now due to what I'm hearing...especially since I'm not very computer smart. I do understand that it depends a lot on the manufacturer of the phone but if I had problems like I'm hearing about it would really do my head in...(no patience). Thanks
Well I love my phone to bits...had issues with the update but now that I have hard reset it and put it corporate mode its not freezing anymore.
But you have to remember its a pocket pc...like a pc..will need to be reset every so often...I was resetting mine of average once a day. It just takes a minute.
There are some negative points..but the positive outweighs the negative I think. My old pda was palm os (clie) and this is windows which is really good! As well as the fact that it has a phone built in too!
Hi all.
Can you please post some more feedback on this rom.
How is the BT stability?
Range?
Crackling noise?
License Expired troubbles?
I know its Build 3500, but maybe something else in this rom makes a difference.
How about the problem with sound dissapering when you answer a call.
Any troubbles here? This is really a pain in the (_!_)
Running the New Rom for a couple of days now and it seems much better than the launch Rom, The O2 active stuff is just as pants as usual so remove that and the "Connections" exe from Windows\startup.
Best thing is that it's stopped the annoying bug of the GPRS settings being screwed up when you enable/disable Wi-Fi.
Recommend it myself

Anybody knows the password for this rom
PDA2K Upgrade
Hi, Can this rom replace the i mate rom on the 2K.& If so will it then be sim locked to O2? as I want to use an O2 pay as you go, & T-mobile sim
many thanks in advance............

How I made my XDA IIs more stable....thanks to Wilesd

I saw a post on here about the progs in the windows/startup folder. Someone mentioned that removing the "connections" executable file had made their XDA more stable. It seems to be the exe that places the O2 icon on the task bar at the top of the screen.
I tried just that...moved the file out of startup to a temp backup folder and did a soft reset.
That was a couple of days ago and I haven't had to reset since Previously I was having to reset 3 or 4 times a day just through very light use!
Thanks for the suggestion Wilesd
Hmm not sure what .exe you are talking about in the windows\StartUp folder.
All I have there are:
Code:
aPerSaveStark.lnk
Camera_Detect.lnk
CheckAutoRun.lnk
ChgDfLnk.lnk
cPerSaveStar.lnk
IA_Caller_ID.lnk
nPerSaveStar.lnk
O2 Connect.lnk
poutlook.lnk
RegNotify.exe
Run_BTTrayCE_10.lnk
Spb GPRS Notify.lnk
STK.lnk
tPerSaveStar.lnk
As you can see.. The only .exe I have is the RegNotify.exe.
The closest that I get to O2 is the O2 Connect.lnk shortcut..
Is that the one you moved?
I don't have the "02 Connect" link in my startup. The file I moved was called "Connections". I can't see on my pda what the file extension is so I don't know if it was a .lnk or a .exe. The mention in the previous post I got the info from was that it was an executable though.
THIS is the post I saw it in.
Maybe it's a country specific thing ?
After all the crashing I was getting with the 1.31 ROM and O2 Active which I never used I decided to do the Corporate install that does not put on the O2 Active rubbish. My phone has not crashed since before I was getting at least 4-5 lockups a day!
Glad I could help, anyway I had to hard reset mine after i installed some dodgy camera upgrade Cab file so decided to give the "Corporate" option ago this time, just select Corporate during the Boot up and type 0506 when it asks for a corporate code.
No looking back now, basically you get a clean WM2003SE install without ANY O2 rubbish but all the GPRS configs etc.. intact. I have not had to do a single reset since.
Recommend this method to any fed up with the O2 active stuff screwing up your IIs. I can honestly say I can't fault the device now.
Thanks for the info guys.
I been holding back from doing the ROM update on my XDAIIs due to everyone saying they have to keep sot reseting their device.
I've just removed the connections.exe from startup folder on my existing setup - make sure i'm happy to carry on without the O2 icon at the top.
Will let you know how I get on.
Thanks again.
Great I shall try this tomorrow.
I've been getting regular crashes on my XDA 2s since I upgraded to the latest ROM.
D
Thanks, removed the O2 connections as suggested 2 days ago and have not needed to reset since.
Was having to reset 2 or 3 times a day since I'd upgraded.
difference between corporate and personal
Whats the difference between corporate and personal mode?
Corporate mode basically doesnt install O2 Active at all so you're left with the default windows screen (presumably so you could customise with your own corporate guff)

Thanks and what do you mean "0506" as corporate code?
thanks ...yellow screen?
thanks guys the corp version seems to do the trick, look very stable now. who need o2 crap. however i can't fail that notice that the screen is slightly yellow from certain angles. it look whitish when you are right in front of it but from any other angle it looks yellowish...anyone else with similar screens? don't remember this to be the case with my previous trusted xda 2...it's a nice device though...
yanni
It seems to be a thing with the latest XDA2 "s" and "i" models as it didn't happen on the original XDA2. I did read that the original had Sony screens but the newer ones are made by someone else.
Regardless of this minor inconvenience, I do think the new screens are much brighter that the previous ones...Just my opinion of course

increase brightness levels
yes they are brighter indeed...also, the xda2s by default reduces the light of the screen to conserve power when used on a battery...if you fix this the yellowish feel goes almost away...why can't they get their sceens right, same probs with bloody apple products, don't they understand that their screen are the most important interface with their devices...

connections.exe in start up
I removed the connections as advised in my XDA IIs and yes it did improve the stability, but after several days I found that even though the PDA was working well the phone would not work properly, either the phone would lock or it would not dial out, or you would answer a call but the caller could not be heard. On two occasions my blue tooth connection was lost. though this only happened on the first day. This was solved by a soft reset. So I have come to the conclusion that yes connections is the trigger but also it dose serve some purpose. I am therefore going to use the corporate mode which seems to be a common solution on many forum topic subjects. I hope this feedback helps others.
I have only just got an XDA2s & noticed that I was resetting 5 or more times per day. I have now removed connections.exe from the startup folder and also removed all references to O2 Active from the Today program and the Start Menus
I'll post results in a few days

I tried corporate mode with removed connections.exe and installed beta of the new today screen.
I have noticed an issue with losing connections too, and your comment about not hearing caller reminds me that happened to me but I thought nothing of it at the time.
I have noticed a bit of a pattern to the not dialling out issue
Basically if the phone loses all connection for a while (not sure how long) then it seems to not get it back when you get to an area you can receive. A soft reset sorts this out.
But this is highly annoying for me, I live in London and go to work on the underground (subway to you yanks) and when I come out if I forget to reset my BA it will not receive calls or dial out.
XDA IIs Stability
What ROM version or versions are you all using?
I'm also having to reset my XDA a couple of times of day and would like to improve on the stability of the device. I've looked in my \Windows\startup and have various links (one is O2 Connect) and two executables (CommLoader.exe and RegNotify.exe).
Also, when I have had to do a hard re-set I have never gotten the option of 'Corporate or Personal'. Probably because of different ROM versions.
Also have any of you experienced problems with the Bluetooth no starting because of low memory on a regular basis?
Do any of you have an O2 XDA IIs from Asia?
Thanks
No resets in 3 days now I've removed connections.exe & stop using O2 Active UI Not using corporate mode though - I'm not brave enough yet to try upgrading my ROM

Which is Better O2 XDA EXEC ROM, iMATE JASJAR or QTEK 9000

Can someone please share their experience.
I am interrested to know how the devices perform in the Corporate install of the O2 and the JasJar.
Having used both I would recommend the o2 Exec ROM, I've ended up reverting back to this due to stability issues with the Imate ROM. Both ROM's will need registry hacks, go with the o2 one running in corporate mode.
The corporate with the code 0506?
Is the pocket MSN there on that configuration?
Which one is the most generic config?

Yes,you can flash any ROM to your Jasjar , you will lose your setting email..etc,others same as new.
I have just loaded my MDA PRO with the O2 ROM, and tryed all the possible installs (basic, Corporate with code 0506 and personal)
Only the Corporate one is really customisation free. I have myself bypassed the extended_ROM so now I have run only one cab the Default_Enable_VT_RTPlugin_0727_2_signed.CAB which is responcible for the video call. Strangely enough I have the same scin in the dialer as I had in the JasJar ROM...
Also as mentioned by... that by O2 ROM the splash screen is not installed it is not true, as right after the upgrade to the O2 ROM and the reset you see the O2 splash screen, which is untill now the nicest looking splash screen.
What I can say after 2 hours of using the O2 ROM is the following:
1. The amount of free program memory after reset is the same as by JasJar ROM.
2. The device is at least twice as fast as with the JasJar ROM.
Conclusion for now I am much happier with the O2 ROM. Much more stable and responsive.
As I am using Jasjar and after your comments I am considering moving to o2 could you tell me how you configured your Jasjar? Specifically, I am using my jasjar without the extended rom except for the video dialler and the bluetooth patch. It is generally running well except for the need to hard reset once in a while. When comparing with the O2 were you also using Jasjar without extenstion?
Thanks, apap
Having used both ROMs, I think they're essentially the same ROM with a few minor branding cosmetic mods... The two ROMs are only dated 2 wks apart and doubt there are any major differences.
To be honest, I couldn't find any performance gain or loose using either one of them and the O2 ROM seem to be slightly smaller in size (maybe due to the additional Imate games/themes etc?) So after going Imate ROM with O2 extended ROM, I went back to all O2 ROM..
I have a Jasjar. Due to the machine freezing occassionally on arrival of a new SMS I would like to give the O2 ROM a try.
I shall be obliged if someone can tell me that when I have installed the O2 ROM and would like to go back to the i-mate ROM would this be possible. What is the procedure to revert from O2 ROM back to the I-mate ROM.
I will appreciate your help
Regards
OK boys and girls...
I have tryed the O2 ROM the whole day yesterday and last night late reverted to JasJar ROM. Reason: maybe I did something wrong but in corporate install of the O2 ROM with the code 0506 but I had no pdf reader which is unfortunately a crucial software for me. I have tried to install it from the cabs of the O2 ROM and from JasJar ROM but it would not work. Of course the solution might be to get a cracked version. But that fact pissed me off so much that I have loudly cursed O2 and reverted to JasJar.
Observations: I have noticed that O2 ROM has more program memory when you reset the device but once you use the thing the amount of program ROM is the same as in JasJar. So the fact that just after the soft reset there is more ROM is actually not interresting. I also found that in the O2 ROM there is a problem with the start menu opening up first time after a soft reset (If you soft reset the device and then for the first time click on start it takes 10-13 seconds to open it up) and this issue was the biggest issue for me to change to O2 ROM. Pocket MSN seemed to work faster and is more responsive on the O2 and maybe overal performance is a little notch better then JasJar. The Bootup Splash screen on the O2 is much nicer then on JasJar it is really sharp and cool
Conclusions: If you like experimenting try out the O2 ROM because you get to see also (if you try out the Personal install) how badly an operator can F*** up the device, it is beyond my understanding but it is hideous their Launch software, the screen looks like a battle field and I get dizzy looking at it, the task manager which it installs is such a crap only due to a fact that once you close all the progs with the task manager the task manager is still running so to close it too you have to go to settings ->system->memory and close it from there. I can understand that the task manager which you can use from your today screen has to be running in order to work but this task manager you have to start by going to programs and starting it manually, It is comepletely beyond me what is the purpose of such a task manger, but hey maybe I am STUPID ???
The battery icon moved next to the start I can understand the handyness of this, but the O2 icon which does not do anything is also comepletely beyond my understanding. Plus when changing the screen orientation the battery and the O2 icons suddenly get a darker background and it looks like it hangs, but it only looks like it the device does not hang, but it is still an ugly sight to see...
If you opt for the Corporate install with the 0506 code I think you are fine the machine performs as it should, and is very stable, no O2 annoyances and no O2 **** to be seen apart from a couple of icons in the Programs. One of them is the O2 install which I beleive supposed to allow you to change your install type, without making a hard reset, but of course it only works in one direction, meaning that if you have a corporate install with the code 0506 and you want to change to standard or to personal it will work but if you are running the standard and want to go back to corporate or if you are runnning the Personal (full featuer O2) and want to change to standard it will not work. After playing around with that I have found that my simmanager and enroller icons dissapeared, but I was able to get it back by running one of the cabs. it was different with the pdf reader, since I need one I have decided to run that O2 install type thingy and chose first standard install which did not bring the pdf back, and then I have chosen the personal install which would mean that I should have now everything on it , the pdf icon was there but alais the pdf did not work I kept on getting an error.
One more thing when you install the CORP version the dialer skin is the same as by the JasJar so I beleive that that is the generic skin, since the O2 Dialer skin is very vague the buttons are beautiful, but have to much light in them so it is difficult to see the letters
SO I am back to JasJar ROM and I beleive will stick to it for a while.
The progs I run :
TT5.1
Resco Explorer
Skype 1.2 beta
Backgammon
Total commander
All installed on the storage card
I hope this not too boring and helps folks here.

Good luck
The Exec ROM (basic and Corporate) do not suffer from a buggy Messaging app on the JJ ROM. The JJ ROM can cause the JJ to freeze on SMS notification and can crash when receiving emails over UMTS.
You mean the imate email app ?? or the bult in functionality. Because I do not have those symptoms. and I have received only today already about 12 sms messages.
About receiving the e-mail overUMTS: I use exchange active sync over UMTS and works like a charm without any problems...Maybe it freezes when using pop mail or imap? What is your configuration ?
And once again by the "buggy messaging app" you mean the imate e-mail??
Can someone confirm the presence of MSN and PDF inthe O2 Corporate mode ????
Thanx
Jasjar or O2?
I have also been wondering whether to try O2. Overall, after many trials I am quite satisfied with Jasjar. I have not installed extended rom except for bluetooth patch and smardialer cabs. I am running: pocketinformant, magicbutton, repligo, netfront 3.3, resco explorer, pocket mechanic, microsoft voice command. I have done a number of recommended register tweaks. I have also updated the radio to 1.04.
Speed is good.
Remaining problems: Once in a while I need to soft reset to overcome freezes. My main problem now is that I cannot install new programs or updates, nor can I remove programs.
It would be useful to find out how others are dealing with these problems and whether thos running O2 corporate are confronting similar problems.
Should I switch to O2 corporate? There seem to be conflicting views on the matter.
thanks, apap
Churchill:
You wrote a few things about Extended ROMs, Code 0506 (for o2 Corp. mode?), and about bypassing the extended ROMs.
Also there was a mention of bluetooth and radio Cabs...
I would be obliged if you could elaborate and explain them to me.
I have the o2 Exec and would like to experiemnt with the corp. mode since I find that in personal mode it freezes up all too often (not enough memory I guess...) but I wouldn't like to loose essential functionality by changing my ROM.
Thanks in advance
Well I am right now updating my MDA PRo from JasJar Rom to O2 ROM, since I still think the O2 ROM was a notch faster in the corporate mode.
I would not advice you to bypass the extended rom install as I found that some things do not work properly like the sim manager and pdf.
You are fine with the Corporate mode since it is the cleanest of all options including the JasJar.
Also Pocket MSN is more responsive in the O2 corporate mode, then with JasJar ROM.
So just go ahead and do a hard reset and choose corporate mode with the code 0506.
By the Way as I have already mentioned earlier the Boot splash screen of O2 is the best till now. Funny is that I was called by T-Mobile representative a couple of days ago and asked what I think about the MDA PRO. I have told him that MDA PRO with t-mobile customization is history by me and I am running JasJar. He warned me that if something happens to my device they can not help me now since there is no t-mobile rom available to flash it with (I do not understand that where is the release rom? did they loose it or something?) but I am still eligible for my 2 year warranty. He also asked why I have switched to JasJar, I have told him that the t-mobile customisation is crap and that the device was slow and unstable. He confirmed that and also saysd that this is exactly the reason why he is contacting me, since they aparently received a threat from one of the major consumer organisations in the netherlands. So he sayd that they are verifying the isue with the users and it does not look good since everybody complains. So hopefully t-mobile will release new rom soon...
Funny is that I have mentioned to him that I hate the hideous colors and boot splash screen of t-mobile rom, his answere was that the boot splash screen they are extremely proud of since it took a long time to come up with the design.... DUDE how long can it take to come up with something so hideous?
Anyhow....
P.S. I let you guys know how is my MDA PRo with O2 ROM
Adobe acrobat reader is available freely from the adobe site, in the same way as their readers always are:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readerforppc.html
HTH
The O2 Exec has OS 1.13.48, which has a memory leak bug. Commontime mNotes synchronization cannot free the memory after use, so a 3rd consecutive sync empties out all remaining RAM. This was resolved in OS version 1.13.53, which is on the Jasjar.
Yes, the Exec ROM seems a tad faster, but at least for me the memory leak is decisive for the Jasjar ROM.
Jasjar or O2?
Wiz, have you reverted to Jasjar? Also, I do not quite understand the memory leak problem. Does this mean that there is a danger of losing note information? Finally, any suggestions on how to resolve the inability to add new programs? Does this problem occur only with Jasjar?
Thanks, apap

Orange UK Only - What's Best Radio with WM6?

Could I please be so greedy as to have a Orange-UK only thread?
I am been reading and searching in earnest to see what other peoples experiences are with the various Radio ROMs. It seems most people are happy with 1.38.00.10, although seems to be a few instances of people sticking with older versions because of battery life/drop outs/data freezes. But I am unable to establish what other people are experiencing in the UK on Orange's network.
I am well familiar with the Radio ROM 1.38 + WM6 - good or bad? thread, but not many people in there commenting on Orange UK.
If you are on Orange UK, please can you share you experiences here?
My own experience has been thus.
Before upgrading to WM6, was on stock M3100, which had Radio 1.06 I beleive. This worked flawlessy with push email (Exch 2003), and never had any problems at all with it. This was also the case when I upgraded to LVSW 20070315, leaving Radio Rom as was.
Then I upgraded to Black 2.0 last week, and did the Radio to 1.34 with it. I didnt notice any problems at first, or rather didnt take much notice of not getting email notifications whilst at work. But on Friday I realised the Data connections were freezing.
I have tried going to 1.38.00.10, to 1.35, back to 1.06, even 1.27. Have also tried going back to LVSW 20070315, and am now on LVSW 20070408
I have narrowed it all down to the "common" problem in swicthing between GSM and 3G. At home I seem to be between 3 transmitters, and swicthing is common. Hence the problems I was having Friday.
The Excellent commmgrpro has helped here. Also Bandswitch.
Anyway, with Phone set to GSM only I have no problems. Odd thing is, driving to Sheffield and back yesterday (dont mention the football!!), with phoen set to Auto, I had no problems at all.
Yet at home, and at work, on auto the data connection freezes.
So.... Whats everyone else using on Orange?
i've been using rom 3.23.0.2 with radio 1.38.00.10 on a spv m3100. this device is been freezing like you described in your post, thing is, it's become unuseable since you have to reboot after the freeze and it happens almost continiously... driving me insane.
if anyone knows of a way how to get back wm5, i'd appreciate it!
freben
When I upgraded a while ago I was wondering the same thing. The only negatives re 1.38 at the time seemed to come from orange UK customers so I went for the 1.27 radio and it seems fine.
Have not yet stepped up further, and at the moment, see no reason to.
Especially as I can even get the H now and then. (If it aint broke...)
@Phil, I've "gone black" (v 2.0) with Radio 1.38.00.10 - only since Saturday, so it may be too early to tell. I've got a push email account with Mail2Web, which I don't tend to use that regularly - it's good for aggregating lots of mail stuff when I go away on business, but my data package ain't up to much (don't get me started ) so I only switch it on when required.
Since installing the new ROM/Radio/SPL, my M3100 seems to be much better than it was prior to the update. I've reinstalled all my apps (apart from PPCProfilesPRO - I'll do that tonight) and the phone seems really stable - no more random lockups when taking it off charge and only a couple of "slowdowns" when ending calls, or if Activesync'ing....can't really complain if I'm honest
I'll keep an eye on things - and maybe switch on the Exchange push email for a couple of days - and I'll post again if the situation changes.
Cheers,
Mark.
PS - Message for @freben; read MrVanx's guide on downgrading to WM5 - see THIS POST for details of how to find it.
MrVanx kindly provides a guide here: http://www.mrvanx.myzen.co.uk/hermes_guide/Downgrade/
Do please read very carefully before trying it
Yep...1.27 for me. No real radio problems to report.
Spent a couple of weeks with WMXL 2.0 and the last two weeks with Black 2.0. Both work fine with Orange with 3g (inc HSDPA) and voice. Direct push/web/pop email all fine.
One freeze this morning (first one in two weeks) but dont know if it was radio or os or an app?
Can;t compare with other radios but simply can say am happy with 1.27 (hence why I havent tried 1.38 etc)
Having no problems with set up in sig.
had the freezing with the stock set up.
Could/should we be more scientific here and use one of the many web2.0 survey sites to do a ROM/OS survey to find the right mix?
with a little effort we could then find the most reliable Radio ROM and view by Country/OS/carrier/etc.
just a suggestion..

@Mark,
try Orange World Browsing, 8ukp for unlimited data access 24/7
Give O a call on 150 and then the billing option, 4
Orange World Browsing is what is what the O rep told me it was listed as. I think one of the key points is the cost, it’s 6.81 exc VAT or 8 inc VAT, that’s the way to check you have the right package.
And you need to be on a 35ukp per month tarif or more to get it.
apologies for off topic post!!
(I was told it was Orange World Unlimited)

My bill confirms it as Orange World Browsing -although I too thought it was OWU.
Not sure if it is still so hard to get as it once was.
Sheep_Head - Well, I am definetely up for using a survey site - any recommendations?
I gave re-flashed my phone back to Black 2.0. Seems to be what most people are using here (IMHO). Have tried Radio 1.27, 1.38.00, and right back to 1.07.
With a totally clean device (i.e. straight after flashing), setting up the orangeinternet connection manually, the thing just wont connect to 3G. Only when I have Band set to GSM will it connect.
Jeez!
I am now in the process of going back to an Orange WM5 rom, to see if it makes any difference, (albeit the Romanian one, so will have to reset the internet connection).
Getting mildly frustrated now.
OK, I'm now back to Orange Radio version, and Orange WM5 -(Romanian!)
Entered Orange Internet settings. And have gained nothing. COnnects via GSM, but not via 3G.
Grrrrrr....
Spoke to Orange CS - no reported 3G problems in my area (well, what about me???).
What's the panel's opinion on sending a phone back to O with OliPro's bootloader on it? (well, and the Romanian Rom, but they prob wouldnt spot that).
I have insurance etc, so would get a replacement in advance....

dude as a last ditch attempt can you try out flashing LVSWs latest ROM?? Make sure your settings are good and post the results?? (it wont take long)
Hey guys - mega useful thread.
I 'thought' I had solved all of my woes and was feeling bloody smug with myself as I thought I had managed to keep the stupid questions down to a minimum. After reading this obviously not .
I am running Black v2.0 (happily) and the rest of the handset is as per my sig block but I have removed spb pocketbooks and replaced it with shell. I thought it was all working correctly but I am suffering the same connectivity issues as yourself (gprs and not 3G).
Also - and I have read the threads but still not working (was going to try again after a re-re-re build I still have no VM notifications.
Anything I can help with or test let me know and I will do what I can.

I have just tested the voicemail fix again since my reinstall and the certificates cab plus installing the sms dll has always worked for me.
Are you having any specific issues with it?
CrazyC,
I am struggling with the whole copying over of the .dll file in the widows directory. Like I said I have done a search of the wiki on VM notifications etc and followed the directions. I have attempted using Activesync but keep getting a response saying that the destination is in use. I have tried directly on the handset (not expecting it to work) and it doesn't and finally I tried by using Total Commander. Still no joy. I will keep going with it though as I was thinking about building again from fresh anyways, and then attempting the vm notification from clean.
Gonna wait out for black v2.5 before I do that however.
Cheers for getting back to me though!

Hmmm... I dont think that will achieve anything. I have had the latest LVSW ROM on there a while bad, with the same problem.
I'd really like to hear from anyone who has returned a flashed M3100 to Orange.

The only way I have done this recently is using Resco File Explorer. You need to go into the Options menu to ensure you can see all files, then copy the sms_providers.dll into the \Windows directory. It warns you, but if you say yes it lets it happen. I have done this numerous times (have flashed my phone about 10 times recently!) without any problems!

First few times I did this, it just copied OK with the file explorer. Most recently tho it gave me the same error - so I went to the zip file on my ppc and told it to extract directly to the windows folder, said yes to overwrite and it did. Maybe worth a try. (install the certs first incase it makes a difference.)
SMS Providers CAB
To make my life easier I put the sms_providers.dll from WM5 into a CAB. To install make sure you've installed the sdk certificates (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=35814&d=1174572298) first and then install this cab - a soft reset is requested at the end of installation and is required.
I've tested this on the latest LVSW ROM and it works perfectly, hopefully will overcome peoples issues with copying this file.

New XDA Zest firmware

There's a new Zest firmware available for download from http://www.my-xda.com/. The filename is Xda_Zest Firmware Update_V7.7.0S.WWE20.00_M4.6.5.P7_V2.1.4 GBR20, which seems to be updates to most of the roms inside the zest. It's installing at the moment, and the upgrade interface on the phone is displaying "GalaxyMini5 Eboot (3.33.0). Since this appears to be a codename for the P565, I guess this is more evidence that the XDA Zest is simply an underclocked P565 and more evidence that P565 firmware may well work on it.
Warning, this firmware does not appear to contain the O2 menu software, or the free GPS software that comes with the phone (although maybe the latter can be re-installed from the SD card). Shame - I rather liked the O2 menu interface.
what improvements does it have? Is it actually worth upgrading?
Thanks.
The only things I can see that I don't remember seeing before are a couple of new or updated control panel entries. Video calling is probably the really important one.
You seem to lose the RSS reader, the O2 auto settings, the O2 menu and the GPS s/w (although the latter was only a demo). I have no idea if using the SD card that came with the Zest will restore these, as I don't have it. (If the software is all on there somewhere, and someone could bung me a copy, I'd be really grateful.)
It does make me wonder how the P565 firmware compares. I understand it has a nice touch interface on it.
It seems odd that the new firmware would remove all the o2 specific bits. Great if you want to use it on another network I suppose, but I quite like the mobile shell or o2 menu.
The satnav software isn't on the sd card - only the maps.
The instructions say:
Please note that if you already have CoPilot satellite navigation software on your Xda, refer to the Xda Zest user manual before upgrading your device software.

I couldn't see anything of significance in the user manual.
Interesting. I actually have Tomtom for GPS on a different SD card, which is related to the reason I don't have the original SD card. Tomtom autoinstalls from the SD card, so I thought it might be that the O2 software installed itself from the SD card provided by O2. I guess that if it's only maps on the SD card then that's not the case, and the new firmware does strip out all the O2 extras, which seems like a peculiar decision to say the least.
Still, it did get me to try the new SPB mobile shell 3, which is what the O2 menu is based on, but nicer. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth the $35 for just a flashy finger driven interface. The weird thing is, it actually might be.
I'm actually going to upgrade my firmware to new one which is currently available in O2 site. What I want to know is if upgrade mine to the latest what would be the changes I may seen... Is it worth upgrading by loosing all the software?
So far I've seen nothing to write home about. The only reason might be if you can't already make video calls and want to do so. (I never make them, so I have no idea whether or not they're supported in the original firmware.)
I just upgraded mine to new firm ware. It worked fine for me. I didn't lose any O2 extras inc O2 menu. It was Oki but haven't tried yet to make video calls.. I will install iGO8 and will uninstall the co-pilot.
SPB Mobile shell 3.0 Rocks working smoothly with my Omnia and Xda Zest
I've just updated, and I didn't lose any O2 extras either (including Copilot). I backed up the Program Files\Copilot folder on the device to my PC before updating, and copied it back over after the update and voila, I've still got my fully activated version of Copilot. It did still prompt for allowing it to connect to the net during the 14-day trial the first time I ran it, but the license screen confirms it's the full version.

I have a working theory that the autorun on my Tomtom SD card might have run in preference to some autorun that might otherwise have run the first time the OS booted. I could test this by re-installing the firmware, but it's kind of a pain to have to put all the data on again.
Having played around some more and browsed the Extended ROM on my device, this does appear to be what happened, as all the CAB files are present. Fortunately this is a bonus for me, since I'm not on O2, and most of these files are useless to me, and I can therefore just pick and choose the apps I'd like to install.
This might be useful to other Zest users - the hack to make the Extended ROM visible:
Use your favourite Registry Editor to make HKLM\System\StorageManager\Profiles\ONDisk2\FATFS\MountHidden set to 0 (default is 1)
You can then browse to \ASUS_ROM\ in Total Commander to view your Extended ROM partition. The ROM does not appear to be write protected, so you can now put all the packages *you* want re-installed on a hard reset in there. Neat.
I contacted O2 support about this issue, and they replied saying that:
On occasions the O2 menu can drop off after a ROM upgrade, but this would usually be resolve by either hard resetting or running the upgrade again. The o2 menu is still installed on the new ROM.

I have now done this upgrade and have retained the 02 menu. The radio reception seems a bit better as I now get HSDPA at home, which I didn't previously, so the radio upgrade seems to be worth it.
ringer
ive got the zest and am happy with it so far apart from the last 2 days i cannot hear it when i get a call everything else works ie.system sounds, core player etc but the actual phone wont ring it just vibrates ive reset it a million times and checked system settings etc but nothing so if anyone has any ideas i would be very grateful, also how do you know if you are getting hdspa or not is there a setting for it or something, cheers guys.
The connectivity icon at the top right of the screen shows what communication protocol is being used by showing a symbol (usually just a single letter) in a solid square. The letters I have seen so far are:
G - GPRS (2G)
E - EDGE
3G - 3G (this is the odd one out with the two letters squashed together)
H - HSDPA
It's worth mentioning that on my train ride home I see all four protocols at different points, and the hand-off between them is very smooth.
thanks for quick reply i will keep an eye on it, still no joy with my ringer though its very strange. never had a problem like it on my orbit. i will keep investigating ,also do you know if anyone will be coming up with a rom for zest as i miss manila 2d although mobile shell v3 is good.
Have you checked:
Start->Settings->Sounds & Notifications
On the Notifications tab you can select the "Ring type", one possible choice of which is "Vibrate", which will make the phone only vibrate on incoming calls. Just guessing.
yes ive tried all that it might be affected by software ive installed recently i will try unistalling them one by one and see if that helps, failing that il do a hard reset i guess, anyone know how to hard reset the zest? thanks for your help.
There is a contortional key sequence for this, but you can also reset it by going to:
Start->Settings->System Tab->Default Settings
cheers managed to sort it , i installed mini lyrics software and ticked all in associating files which for some reason stopped the phone from ringing
thanks for your help.
Failure of firmware upgrade
Ive just had a power failure whilst upgrading the firmware on my new xda Zest and all it it shows when turning on is "OS Update failed! Please update again". Is there anything i can about this or will it need to be returned to O2. Any suggestions. thanx
