Any tools to recover a Sandisk SD Card? - General Accessories

Hi everyone,
I upgraded my XDA succesfully by using the SD method with a card from my digital camera. After that, I formated the sd card with the card reader then I plugged it in my digital camera.
And here is my problem, the digital camera doesn't recognise anymore this Hi-speed 512 sandisk. I tried everything to recover it but no success at all until now.
I understand by using the OSI image tools, the card has been formated in a special way to make space for the file NK.nb1
So if someone has got any similar experience, be welcome to give me any tips for a solution.
Thanks.

i just formatted my card with my xda
and pocked mechanics

My digital camera has the option to format while in the camera, have you checked the built in menus? You could try formatting your card in the card reader with FAT16 if it is FAT 32 at the moment, if it is FAT 16 NOW then try FAT32.

Hi guys,
Thanks for your reply.
Sorry I forgot to say. My XDA card reader and my PC card reader don't have any problem to read or write or format this SD card, Which I did. FAT and FAT 32, but there's no result for my digital camera.
Always the same message: " unable to use the card" and the SD Card was working perfectly before.
One strange thing I have noticed (I think) is that the memory capacity is different now. I get 6 Mb more than before.
Otherwise, yes I tried to format the card with the OS from my digital camera but without any success as the camera doesn't let me any possibility to access to the menu with the card plugged in it. I'm stuck.
Before to use OSI image tools the capacity was;
FAT: 477 MB
After:
FAT: Free space : 507109376 bytes => 483 MB
FAT 32: Free space: 506372096 bytes =>482 MB
I'm just wondering if maybe a header from this SD card was wiped out during the process. Maybe some of you guys know a software who could read and write on this special part of the SD card, then I would compare and maybe repaire it.
Thx

Hi,
Is it possible that someone try to plug a sd card who was used to flash a PDA in a digital camera minolta Z3 or other Z...?
I would be interrested to get a feed back on the result.
Cheers,

Finally after several Emails to (Minolta and Sandisk) I got a valuable answer from Minolta who confirmed my first thought. BTW, Sandisk never replied to me, I’m very disappointed by them. Fortunately, there are others competitors in this sector.
Guess what for the next new SDcard…
So:
On each SD card (Others models certainly too), there are several important information on the boot. This information is necessary to inform the digital camera on the technical specification from the SDcard. If the original boot is missing or corrupted, the digital camera doesn’t recognize the SD card properly and screen the following message “Unable to use this card”.
And here is the solution to recover an original boot for your SD card. You should use SDFormatter V1.1 .
Now my SD card is like a new one(only joking) .
Cheers,

2GB card in my exec not working?

hi, new to the forum! i have just bought a sans disk 2GB card but im having trouble using it. i tried it in a friends card reader and managed to put a couple of mp3 albums on but then it makes the system freeze up until you take the card out, i have formated it and tried again but the same happens, similarly when i put it in my exec the phone works fine and can see the mp3s but when i try and load one it freezes. iv been looking for the answer to the problem and found some info on 2gb cards in hp's something about this fat/fat32 thing, is this the problem iv got and could someone enlighten me? also will i be able to format the card or whatever while it is in the exec and synced with pc as i do not have another card reader, although my friend has a pc one if i have to do it that way...
many thanks in advance.
Check your OS
This thing happens only when
you have initial ROM (update it wth latest ROM)
Card is not formatted on the same media (format it on your universal)
Card media is + technology which is not compatible with your mobile. (try to change it to SD instead of MMC)
I hope above may help you
sorry if im being dumb but how do i format the card on my universal?
simply format it in windows... I got a 2gb high speed card from samsung and I am using it without any problem without formating it even once
it could also be that the card is incompatible or your universal is faulty. try another card and that same card in some other device
the card iv got is a sandisk one, i read that it was compatible with the xda II so presumed it would be fine with the exec?
I think it's broken.
I had a 2GB from Transcend, and it had the same symptoms.
I returned it for RMA, because I read that someone else ad the 4GB version was working perfectely.
Before you do return it, buy another card reader. I had 1gb cards that corrupted seemingly, except a newer SD reader formatted them fine and they have been fine ever since.
Not all readers can handle the big sizes.

Mini SD RAW format advice

Hi all,
I just got a new Sandisk 1GB Mini SD for my Wizard. I put it in my phone and it was recognized immediately. I copied a few files across (my TomTom install and a few maps) and then finished the install. I had to soft-reboot to get TomTom to work - but after rebooting my card doesn't work. When the phone starts up it asks if I want to format the card. I tap yes and it goes away - but doesn't really do anything.
I have taken the Mini SD out of my phone and put it into the card reader that's in my laptop. Windows recognizes that it is a SD card and also prompts to format it - but when I try to format it as FAT or FAT32 it says it can't complete. I have tried doing it through DOS too, but it comes back as saying that there is a bad Track 0 and the card is unusable.
I'm struggling to believe that the card is now poked after just copying some files onto it. I'm hoping that it's just something to do with the file system that has dies somehow. Does anyone know how to reformat the card (either through my phone or Win XP) or how can I resurrect this sucker?
Thanks in advance!
try pocket mechanics
thanks rudegear. I tried pocket mechanics, but it doesn't even recognise the card. I believe that pocket mech will only work if my phone can see the card first. this isn't even happening. the phone obviously knows that there is a card in it, as it says that the expansion slot is in use, but it can't read the card at all. any other ideas?
sounds like you have a fake card. 128mb cards formated to show 1gb, you copy more than 128 they corrupt. this happened to me
okay. I've given up on this card and have sent it back. no more trying to ressurect the dead for me!
has the new card solved the prob? The problem Iam having is almost identical to yours. I purchased a 2gig mini sd card (bn) for my atom. When inserted into my laptop's integrated sd reader, it would recognise a card has been inserted but would not open the card (but the Atom recognised the card).
Thinking I have bought a faulty card, I sent it back to manufacturer. The seller tested and concluded there is nothing wrong with the card but sent me a new one.
I had the same trouble with the new card. Convinced the card was not faulty, I purchased a new card reader.
The firt day i connected the card into the reader. things were SMOOTHE! I was lovn life. The card was read instantaniously and i proceeded to fill the card with a hole heap of goodies (including tomtom).
I used up approx 100mb of stuff that day and ejected the card from reader and inserted in my atom. Data was read with no trouble on pda and pc.
I inserted the sd card back into card reader the following day and now it seems the data originally put on from the first 'contact' is now locked. I cannot delete nor add anything else to the card. Oh and before anyone asks: yes, the lock was and is in the UNLOCK position (i dont even use the lock).
So my next move now is to exchange my card reader with a simpler/single slot. I read somewhere that cardreaders/devices sometimes lock data (dont know how true it is but got no choice).
in summery:
buying an external card reader solved the initial issue of recognizing/reading sd card but created another problem of LOCKING the sd card.
Is anyone else having issues with large sd cards?
I solve the problem by inserting card to Digital Camera that use SD card.
it formatted without error.
Card Reader and other phones does not format it. I think because of file system.
hmm... I will try that. will keep you all posted.

4GB SD Card Unreadable

My SanDisk 4GB Extreme 3 SD Card used to work on my PC's SD card reader. The SD card reader read it as a 4GB SD card.
I tried to use it on the Universal and it asked me to format the card to read it. I did not format it. Next I tried to plug it into the SD card reader on the Universal again and again and it would ask me to format it. I formatted it and it read! But sadly only as 1961MB or 2GB card. Next i took it out and tried it back on my PC's SD card reader. Now my PC would ask to format it.... omg. So i tried again and it still asked me to format it. This time the PC tried to format it but it failed. My PC is unable to read the SD card. I used an external SD Card reader and it failed to read my 4GB SD card too!.. omg Universal Destroyed my 4GB SD Card ;( .... and it only reads as 2GB on my Universal.
Can anyone help me get out of this miserable situation.

Alright just before I go looking out for this SanDisk fix utility I would like tell you that SanDisk hasn't officially marketed the 4GB Extreme III cards in North America and Asian Mainland. It comes from Japan so I wonder if i will be even able to recieve support on it or a fix utility. How big is this fix utility? Can you upload it here if you find one for a 4GB extreme III card or post the link please? How the hell does it suddenly become 2GB....?_?
On some SD card readers it wont read too! And on all other places it reads as 2GB and wont go above 2GB. I thought maybe its just a reading issue but it actually reformatted the firmware to 2GB >.< .... I am sueing either microsoft or sandisk on this, like I think enough is enough and both companies have reached their limit on troubling me...always i get imperfect stuff.
I am really stressed out after spending so much money and still having technical difficulties with these things.

I believe using QTEK latest ROM with A2DP has no problem working with 4GB SD card

I have to agree with FOSA. My 4GB Card works just fine. Plus, it worked fine even when I was testing the different AKU 3 ROMs.

Oh no... Both the cards aren't being read by the PC's SD card reader anymore. The PC's SD Card reader will always ask me to format the card but when I click to format it wont, just freezes.
From all my SD card readers only the Universals SD card reader works, only shows 2GB and I cannot load more than 2GB of data on the SD card. I can access the SD card from my PC using the Universal as an SD card reader. My USB card reader wont read it either. All my other 2GB mini-SD cards work flawlessly.
Maybe I should try another ROM and see if the SD card can be formatted back to 4GB and 8GB respectively. I was using a ROM that I was making myself while this incident happened. I think that ROM will need more fixing. For now I will roll back to a stable ROM. Some people suggest the Qtek Official ROM and some say that all the AKU 3 ROM's here work to read the 4GB cards well.
I just got to keep testing eh? Testing and learning how these SD cards function in which ROM?
Panasonic SD card formatter wont work because the PC cant read the SD cards, its like one of those corrupt damaged CD's that you cant even access.

Thanks so much indra. It worked. Both my 8GB and 4GB cards are back to life! The format also returned them to their original 4GB and 8GB state
If you bought the card in high street store, return it.

I am still having the problem where the Pocket PC reformats my 4GB card into a 2GB card and SanDisk is unable to find a solution to it.
Also while using other ROM's my 4GB card is not read? It seems the hardware is compatible to read 4GB cards except the ROM is not designed to do so. For example Helmi's AKU 3.5 ROM cannot read my Sandisk Extreme III 4GB. Now SanDisk also doesn't believe that i have that card because they never marketed it, but they dont know that I got it from their factory! Now that remains a secret how i got it. Its really fast and amazingly I gave it to a few people.
Luckily i found a ROM that reads my 4GB card except the 4GB card is always reformatted to 2GB... Its very confusing because even my PC now reads it only as 2GB....It was working fine about 2 weeks ago as 4GB.
If I can get any help to make this card back to a 4GB please! Thank you for your help ^^
From what I've read some weeks ago on the Panasonic homepage was, that SD-cards following the "old" SD-standard are designed for up to 2GB capacity. Everything above that is non-standard and will likely make problems. (Although there are some exceptions as you can read here on this forum.)
To come around these problems, they invented the SDHC-standard for sizes from 4GB and more. Sad thing is, that the reading device has to support this standard. The Universal doesn't afaik.
You can even read that on Wikipedia:
Some manufacturers have produced 4GB SD cards that do not conform to the SD2.0/SDHC and are incompatible with existing SD devices, and are also incompatible with SDHC devices.

So if you have problems, stick to 2GB cards. They work flawlessly.
P.S.: I first bought one of those 4GB-SD-cards and it was recognized by my Universal as 4GB but after copying approx. 5-6MB on it, it suddenly stopped working. The Universal always asked to format this thing. The PC showed sizes of about 930MB, even the Panasonic SD Formatter wasn't able to do anything about it. So I returned it and got 2x 2GB cards. No problems at all.

Except I cant return it because I got it from Japan and it will be coming soon in retail markets by 2-5 months. I agree the 2GB cards work flawlessly. Except I would like larger storage.
I am using CNET Flash format to reformat the Card except it wont go back to being 4GB. It seems the firmware of the card has been overwritten

listen if u are for real then please do a screen grab of your pda reading your big cards, and a quick picture using ur pda and post up that pic of the magic sandisk ultra 4gb that even they the manafacturers say isnt around, yet you say you got it from their factory but they are not releasing it for quite a few months, trust me memcard manafacturers do not need tht much time to manafacture stocks before they supply them so me thinks you are a little deluded

There is no a firmware inside the cards that might be overwritten using end-user tools. In your case most probably the card was re-partitioned. Read about MBR and partition tables for details. Quite easy to fix.

SD Card Problem

I've bought a 4 Gb Sd Card yesterday, when i inserted it in my pc it asks me to format the card (showing me a size of 3800 Mb c.a.), but after i've done it now my card seems to be only 950 Mb c.a..... I've tried almost everything looking for a solution on the web (for example format again, format again but by DOS, use Panasonic SD Formatter, etc) but nothing, i can't have the size setted to 4 Gb...
What can i do to solve this problem?
Basically you must have bought a fake 4g card that is actually 1g. You can use your ppc as a storage device (using wm5torage) to format it through the pc. If it still reports 950mb you will then know for sure that it is a 1g card. The vendors have a way to trick the card to initially report a higher capacity but you will experience data loss if you use it that way without reformatting to the actual capacity.

External microSD Card Slow in LG G3, Fast on PC

I had a 128GB microSD card in my LG G3, a 128GB Samsung EVO Select microSD card. After only a year I was seeing slow read/write benchmark speeds (using A1 SD Bench) & was also seeing some lag so I replaced it with a 128GB Sandisk Extreme Pro. But the speed for the Sandisk is the same.
The app A1 SD Bench shows them both doing Read: 42MB/sec, Write: 38MB/sec. I've seen others that see speeds of 70MB/sec and higher. Both cards are formatted exFAT.
I'm concerned that maybe I've made tweaks using Trickster Mod that might have slowed the card down? Or could there be another reason? Thanks to anyone that can help.
I don't know what's causing that. I also had a problem with my LG G3 851 and the SD card. Basically the SD card died and I can't read anything from it nor reformat nor anything. It was a 128gb SanDisk, one of the faster ones, running Lineage OS 16.1. I ended up just figuring I didn't really need the SD card in my case. I'm sorry your's is running slow. All I can say is try to factory reset the phone back to stock and see if that solves the problem.
Factory reset ("saying a prayer") is too drastic a step and rarely solves anything, but I did solve the problem.
Using Desk Genius on my PC I created a single partition on the microSD card (Most people just format, you must create a partition first). Then using Windows 7 disk format I formatted the microSD card for exFAT, 128K cluster size. Now the microSD card flies!!!
It took me a full weekend of testing to come up with this. I tried using various tools to partition, and various tools to format, all with different cluster sizes. This gave me the best performance.
Tools included Disk Genius, EaseUS Partition Master, MiniTool Partition Wizard, Windows 7 built-in tools, and a lot more.
EDIT: I forgot to add, after formatting you need to go back into Disk Genius and do a 4K alignment check (it's in the Tools menu). Alignment to 4K boundaries prevents extra read/write cycles and improves performance.
If it fails 4K alignment then you need to partition and reformat all over again.
That's awesome! I'll keep that in mind if I go get another SD card some day. I didn't realize that the format could mess up the read/write speeds. I wonder if a wrong format made my SD card die. If I do get another SD card, this time I'll keep the receipt in case it stops working again. I had a PNY SD card die on me in my Surface 3 as well.
It's not just the reformat, you have to repartition as well. And I forgot to mention you need to check for 4K alignment too (I edited my OP).
