Avatars temporarily disabled - About xda-developers.com

There's a yet another new phpBB security problem. Something to do with uploading avatars. I cannot oversee the scope of the problem right now, and the phpBB people have messed up uploading their new version to Sourceforge, so the new version cannot be downloaded.
I've turned off the Avatars until we upgrade. No worries: your avatar isn't gone, and it will come back soon...

I have been having problems with very slow access to site and also non availability of site for the past 2 days.

Offer to Cookers

All this rapid share, yadda yadda is really getting old quick. If at least a few ROM Cookers are interested. I'll setup a space on my server to allow uploads that point back to an HTTP download section. You would be responsible for uploading the file, then posting a link here on XDA that would be a direct download link. The uploads would be handled by a passworded FTP account. I have about 400gig of download to spare per month, which should be more than enough for a bunch of Roms. Either reply here or send me a PM and we can talk.
I can also set it up, so that people can go to a root folder and find all the Roms and just pick the ones they want. Heck I can even store older Roms on the server so if someone wants an old one it will be up there.
1st point, there will be no warez posted.
2nd point, you must be a recognized cooker.
Well Cookers, drop a line and let me know.
It would end up being something like this, with each cooker having his own folder.

This has been done, before, twice.
And both times, the file disappeared, or the person did, within 4 days.
Well, not Jannaa's!!!! I use it aplace4u.biz and it's AMAZING!!

The only reason I could see a person leaving is if Microsoft sent a letter saying they did not like people cooking the roms and throwing a hissy fit. I have went ahead and created the folder on my remote server and am uploading stuff right now. I have not made the ftp account for uploading, however I should be able to allow open access to what I have on there in about 2hrs.

I hate rapidshare as much as the next non premium person, so i hope this gets off the ground. people don't even use aspupload, or whatever its called..
Ok the Basic is up, http://www.captfiero.com/romsYou will have to mouse over the file name if it is too long to show up, and then just look at your tool bar to see the entire name.
If anyone see's a file that should not be there. (copyrighted) Please let me know and I will remove it.
Also if a file is something "YOU" made or prefer me not to have up, let me know and I will remove it.
I will not make the upload address public so if you want files uploaded, you can send me a PM and I will upload it, or if you are an established cooker, I will give you direct upload settings.
hmm
I am sure my chef would love this feature, his connection sucks back home though, so if this is genuine I will start mirroring his stuff here too ... I guess the more mirrors the better, I been mirroring to 4shared and mediafire all this time... seems to work well
Just FYI tho, CRCinAU has at least around 100GB of traffic a day (may be he can correct me on this) ...

He said something like that somewhere.. If you think, most rom topics get 1k+ hits per day.. and say 100 download.. a 50 meg file, that's 5gig from nowhere..
And when a new rom is out..
Well I have 1200gig total traffic allowed, I use about 400gig a month for Videos and I want to keep about 400gig aside for spikes. That leaves me about 400gig to play with. I can't mirror the entire PPC world, but the latest roms and a few add ons would be fine.
heh - where abouts is this mirror located?
At the moment, my mirroring system is handling the load quite well - I have a total of 5 mirrors around the globe (1 x EU, 3 x US, 1 x AU) and the amount of traffic is much lower than it was a month ago on the one AU server because of the way things are spread out now.
The mirroring scripts will auto-detect where the user is and send them to the nearest server (or if we don't have a server near you, we randomly pick one to share the load).
You'll notice this is why I don't have direct links to anything anymore - it's all to my download script.
Even DeviceUpdate uses this script to custom-generate it's index based on where you are
That being said, as of my typing this, since 28th August, I've served:
Release 12.11 ROMs: 270 @ 40Mb each (10.8Gb)
Release 11.2 ROMs: 38 @ 41Mb each (1.55Gb)
Device Update Sessions: 1,235 (unknown download amount)
That's pretty good for less than 4 days
Some more mirrors would be nice - although mirrors in the US are probably not as helpful as the rest of the world... There's ~1Gb of content to be mirrored and count on ~100Gb per month of traffic in a lazy month.
FYI: Developers thread options: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=388819
To my knowledge it is a US based server. I am personally in Canada however it seems that US hosts are far cheaper. I'll send ya a PM with the details.

Fennec Milestone Release for Windows Mobile
02.10.09 - 08:40am
On behalf of everyone who have been tirelessly working towards this goal, I would like to announce that our first milestone release of Fennec for Windows Mobile is now available for download.
This release is pre-alpha, and intended to get the product into the hands of early adopters in order to get feed back and bug reports. In order to focus our efforts on getting this release out, we have targeted only one device, the HTC Touch Pro. This has a number of user interface implications, including graphics designed for a 300 dpi screen, control layout intended for a vga screen and reliance on a hardware keyboard for text input.
Installation
You can install this on your HTC Touch Pro by navigating to the cab installer with your existing browser. This will download the cab file and kick off the installation process.
Alternatively you can download the cab file to your desktop and transfer it to your device via activesync. Once the cab file has been copied to you device, navigate to it using file explorer (on the device) and click on the cab file to launch the installer.
Please note, its been brought to our attention that some carriers are filtering web traffic to preclude downloading cab files. If this is the case with your carrier, you’ll either have to download to your desktop and transfer by activesync, or be connected by wifi if you download directly to the device.
Status
Our focus to this point has been to have a working, usable browser. To get there in a hurry we have punted in a few places, and I’d like to point a couple of them out. First is the update mechanism (both for the browser itself and for extensions). After installing this release, you will not be offered updates automatically, so please stay tuned for follow up releases. Also, we have disabled plug-in support. This is one of our high priority items going forward. Finally, as I mentioned before, there is no soft keyboard support. On an HTC Touch Pro, you’ll have to slide out the keyboard to enter a url.
Besides the release, we marked another major milestone yesterday when the final patch to NSPR landed and we were able to build for Windows Mobile off Mozilla’s trunk for the first time ever. I say the first time because minimo was built from branches of both NSS and NSPR.
“leaks”
Over the last week and half there have been several blog posts and “news” articles floating around the internet about leaked Windows Mobile Fennec builds. This has been fairly entertaining to those of us working on the project for a couple reasons. First, the builds that these posts have pointed to are the builds that I pointed to on twitter. They were intended to be used by the developers working on the project (or anyone else willing to deal with really buggy software) to find bugs before we pushed anything out to the general public.
Also, the concept of secret, leaked builds flies in the face of how Mozilla operates. Our source code is out there for everyone to see. We have a bug reporting system that anyone can (and is encouraged to) access to file new bugs or track the progress of existing bugs. The majority of our discussion around the project is entirely public on irc, our wiki or our meetings and conference calls.
I have been working for Mozilla for 16 months now. At first its a bit of an adjustment to having everything you do or say out there in the public. But after overcoming that initial shock, its a point of pride. This project goes to extraordinary lengths to be open and transparent. If you are going to write about Mozilla, take advantage of that. Read our meeting minutes, hop on irc to ask a question or even dial into the weekly status meeting. Its all out there, just look.

Are you really sure about that ?
because there are no news on the mozilla's website ????
hm. after a very slow loading I see the adressbar, but cannot open the keyboard
to enter any address...
this thing is sad!
This can’t be an official release! I really don’t believe they would release this garbage.
I installed on the Touch HD and the Touch Pro and nether works.
Don’t waste your time!!!!!
OK OK please use the search function before posting !!!
This is not the official release it is the beta version and has already been posted !!

This shouldn't even work anyway because it seems designed to be for vga like touch pro.
If you want you can get the windows version HERE just to see what it's like...
Looks pretty interesting and it's apparently amazingly fast on the N810.
it's beta, so no need to complain about
But, I'm looking forward to the first running version
I can also confirm it doesn't work but it does look promising, it is very jerky on the touch hd and takes forever to load and i had to use a bluetooth keyboard to input text and pages dont load but apart from that I'm still very much looking forward to seeing this completed.

The WinMo App Store

Freeware PPC, and the numerous FTP sites, along with device update, and PDM.
These are the many places I've fund over 85 different applications("apps") that I run on Windows Mobile 6.x.x. These all being in many places, sometimes hard to find, sometimes easy to find. Other "apps" include going to a website, made for and by the "app" parent company.
I have around 500 cabs on my HDD, updating and reorganizing them all the time.
Now say I make up a handy spreadsheet(on my phone) That goes over screen size Supported OS versions, and various other things including a description. Is there any way that someone else, that has a lot better understanding of mobile "app" writing than I do, take the info I compile, and apply it to their Marketplace for window Mobile, the real one.
I would hope to include my best Icon(that may take a while), and Potentially server mirroring the apps, since I already keep all the "apps" I use and have acquired, in a very organized fashion.
The style of PDM I like a lot more than M$Marketplace, the search feature is nice(sorting ITL and WWE is convenient. The touch interface, such as the drop down info, is also well implemented.
Device Update on the other hand it awesome, its simple, very similar to the OS it runs on.
I know WinMo is dead, within a few months from this threads initial post, it will be outdated, and completely forgotten shortly thereafter. But I know plenty of people sticking with at least one older model(e.g. HD2) and the apps are really out there.
Anyone care to work on this? I just lost my main PC and have been using my phones word processor and multiple web browsers to keep myself as close to a real PC as possible, this also had me downloading apps for usage similar to what I was doing on my PC.
Alongside this, I read an article about why someone is using the iPhone 4 as a "daily driver." When it came to his comparison of the apple, android, and WinMo marketplaces, he went over how although there is always an app there for WinMo its painstakingly hard to find. This is true(at least to those average consumers) and as he mentioned the Marketplace holds 1100 "apps."
I've been using a PPC since 05-06(can't remember...) and love what WinMo has had I.M.O. Over the other OS's. I have always been able to find exactly an app(s) for that. Normally in the larger "collections" I've grabbed from the net, there are thousands in each 0day pack and he was releasing them on a regular basis.
I also know that this could really help the platform, it would be the user made the marketplace. Then what's stopping M$ from handing us helpful(outdated e.g.. code) info that can make our app store even better.
I don't want a mimicking app store(although a skinnable one would beat unique) I just want something that can help out and be user made, user maintained.
Let me know what you guys think.
I worte, and published thi from my TyTn II(at&t tilt)
XDA Marketplace
Hi,
Nice to see your thoughts on this...
xda member 'davidgida' has developed an application 'XDA Marketplace' (thread)
Your repository would be a great addition to it ... I will point him to this thread as I have pointed to his
Hope to see a great partnership come in place !
I would love it if you upload your cab files to the xda market
If you have an idea what could be improved on the xda market or a feature you would love to be added just PM me. Every new idea is welcome.
EDIT:
Nearly I forgott:
This is the official thread for the xda market: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=707988
Wow, I saw this thread drop off the main page listing so fast, I figured all was missed.
Glad to find the App that's here already, Just got my Tilt2 Monday, was busy borrowing other peoples internets to flash deepshining on it. Got it up and working the same day I got it.
I'll try to get my FTP server back up. I'm currently running all my computers in my office on shared shared internet. Tethering to my main rig, and sharing the net to the other three. My switch recently died, and the wire running from the lower floor died shortly thereafter. I've been only online with my phone.
After I get the XDA app store on my phone, I'll compare my list to yours, then null out the duplicates. The spreadsheet I can custom tailor to similar categories, but I haven't seen the layout yet. Hopefully it will only take me a few days to write up some descriptions.

There will be some design problems with the qvga/vga version. I currently working on a complete new version of the xda market. I will fix this error with the new version
Hi,
I hope you are still interested in a market.
I'm now finished with developing xda market v2.1
if you want to you can take a look at it:

XDA forums almost unusable with NoScript

Hi - My internet browser is Firefox, and I have been using NoScript for years.
There is only one website that causes me constant problems when browsing: XDA Developers.
I use NoScript constantly with a lot of stuff disabled by default: Everything Facebook is always disabled, along with doubleclick and a bunch of other tracking websites.
With NoScript on, the XDA screen is constantly jumping around, with various websites constantly trying to refresh about twice a second. It is so jumpy with embedded websites continuously refreshing, that I can't even control NoScript well enough to enable whatever disabled website(s) are causing the problem.
I wouldn't be frustrated if this happened to me all the time, but XDA is the only website I see this problem on. I would expect a high-tech developer website like XDA to have less problems instead of more problems.
Sigh. I wish somebody at XDA could fix this.
¿GJ?
NoScript has a whitelist feature. If you don't want to use it, you can't expect it to be "fixed" (actually, modified to fit your needs would be a better choice of words) anytime soon, as the forums (and many other forums, in general) rely rather heavily on scripts.
I personally have XDA added to my whitelist.
As for the refreshes, did you make sure it's not another add-on that's conflicting? Start FF in safe mode and check if the issue persists.
Don't know if this helps, but I just tested XDA with NoScript without any issues.
That being said, a lot of features rely on JavaScript, so no guarantee what would happen if you only turned on some of them.
Huh.. I use NS on FF, and have seen no issues. To be sure it is NS, have you told it to temporarily allow all, and see if that fixes it? It could certainly be another issue..
What he could be speaking of is the portal constant refreshing (not on the forum), which also occurs on my differents computers with NS (with xda on whitelist).
For me, everytime I scroll on the portal main page, it refresh itself.
It's weird - Something changed between yesterday and today. Yesterday, this page wouldn't sit still until I was able to do enough "Temporarily allow all this page" button presses (about 5 or 6) to get the page finally stabilized.
Now, everything was stable when I entered XDA with the same "allow" list I had yesterday.
I'm not a big fan of "White List"ing sites, since so many sites have Facebook embedded in them (amongst many other tracking sites I don't like). Ever since Facebook violated my privacy and sucked up my personal contact information without my explicit approval, I ... ...
... well, let's just say I won't "Like" Facebook.
I appreciate the feedback from y'all, and I wish I knew what changed.
Thanks!

Some forum features won't work: dropdown menus (e.g. "Go to Page" next to the page numbers, "Quick Links", "Rate thread") search boxes not being cleared automatically when you click them, username/device completion in search boxes or using the new mention feature, share buttons (they won't show how many times X got shared), etc. The WIYIWYG editor obviously doesn't work as well.
The portal's layout is a bit messed up, too.
It's all fixed by adding xda-developers.com to the whitelist. I think you both already have it added (I removed it for testing), which is what you're supposed to do for websites you trust anyway.

I would suggest using something that will block them on all websites, then. You can probably do it using NoScript's advanced filtering options, but I personally already use AdBlock Plus, and there's a neat list you can subscribe to that will block all those buttons. Get the "Annoyance Block List" from here.

I have the opposite problem it seems, in that if I white-list the site then quite often one of the scripts goes haywire
and refreshes the page repeatedly for several refreshes or until the server complains with an error message about being overloaded.
It has been suggested to me that this may be a 2013 theme problem, so I'm trying the 2010 one for a few days to see if that fixes it.

@Nameless One: Yes, I've been seeing the "Server Overloaded" error message as well. I wasn't sure if it was NoScript related, though I was beginning to suspect it. I would open the same XDA pages in IE or Chrome without any problem, but see the "Overloaded" error only with Firefox. Usually (but, not always), temporarily enabling all sites fixed that problem for me.
¿GJ?
I have the same constant refresh problem.
The site only works if I set noscript to allow everything globally or if I use IE (ouch).
It feels to me this site is overburdened with ad/tracking scripts and blocking them forces the site to break (admins anti block?).
I will try the 2010 theme idea and report back, also I do have the main domain whitelisted.
--edit--
2010 theme fixes it, so I guess a 2013 theme issue.
Yep - Dumped the 2013 Theme and went back to 2010 Theme.
Everything's groovy now.

2013 relies heavily on javascript so I imagine that is why you are having some issues. 2010 uses it much less but you may still see some issues relating to Javascript being blocked, such as menus not working and that sort of thing.

compact view broken

The compact view is completely broken, just a blank page loads on all os's and browsers i tried
Yes, it comes up blank.
The normal page is simply a big hassle to browse (either it's too long list or ALL T-Mobile version devices are not there).
Having same problem, I was unaware of this and thought the site was down for the past two days. Just occured to me when I viewed the site on my phone that when I switched to compact it wouldn't load. I had to clear my cookies in order to simply access the site again, such a big trouble for one site. This really needs to be fixed soon.

I am seeing this as well on the 2013 beta skin, Seems to work fine on the 2015 beta skin.

I'm glad I am not the only one with the issue. In Firefox I get a blank page and in IE I get
Most likely causes:
•The website is under maintenance.
•The website has a programming error.
What you can try:
Refresh the page.
Go back to the previous page.
It's back.
I think compact edition is the fastest way to browse devices through brand, and this is essential for mobile devices or even desktop.
