Hi,
picked up a shiny new MDA III yesterday afternoon having switched providers - number transfer in progress - so I'm new to both the handset and the provider.
Managed to get the unit hooked up to my home WiFi network pertty simply etc and got the Active Sync sorted etc.... other than the fact the GRPS isn't configured out of the box, I've got a single major bugbear to sort.
That is that I don't seem to be able to get MSN Messenger to connect.
It's exhibiting exactly the same symptoms suggested here.... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;832515
... but obviously the refers to a previous OS version ?
So, either I have something to fix or unlock in the set-up, the port is blocked on the handset (works fine on my laptop on the same WiFi through the same firewall) ?
Had a search through the forums, but to no avail. Can anyone help me on this ?
Are there any recommended patches/fixes I should have installed straight from the off ?
Thanks in advance !
Matt
OK, just so you you don't think I'm totally clueless, from what I've just been reading in the T-Mobile online manual, I have to have the GPRS connection open to connect to Messenger.
Is this right ? Surely if I have a active WiFi connection is should be able to connect using that, right ? Will it connect via GPRS and then pass it over to WiFi ?
I'll have to check it when I get home to see if I can resolve it in that way.
Any other tips gratefully received !
Matt
I'm using Messenger with a CSD (GSM) connection because it's part of my allowance. Sorry but I haven't tried WiFi yet.
I'm having the same problem.
MSN Messenger works fine using GPRS but fails to login using my Wifi connection.
What's even weirder is that it works ok when docked (ActiveSync)!!!
I'm using MDA III on T-Mobile (UK)
Anyone got any ideas?
I've tried replicating this issue, but on my XDA IIs over WiFi, it connects to messenger no problem... it doesn't even try to initiate a GPRS connection first. I can only assume that the MDA III is configured slightly differently out of the box.
As a thought, you might want to double-check Connection Manager and see which type of connection is set for programs that automatically connect to the internet
Ok, home and finished doing the set-up.
I've found no way of using MSN by any other protocol than GPRS. If you are WiFi atached and attempt to use MSN, then it will drop the WiFi connection and instead pick up GPRS. And obviously you're on for .075p per kb... which might be the real answer in why T-Mobile have set-up the device in this way.
The 'programs that automatically connect to the internet' doesn't seem to allow you to select WiFi as the default connection, only the range of GSM/GPRS options and the 'My Work' one.
Should I use the 'My Work' VPN option and set that up to use WiFi ?
If anyonebody has got any tips on how to set or hack this... seems there are a few of us that might benefit !
Just out of curiosity: if you go into your WiFi manager, have you specifically told the device that the WiFi card in your MDA III connects you to "The Internet"?
I can't recall whether that was the default setting before I set up my wireless network connection on my IIs... it seems like such a no-brainer, but it could assume that your WiFi connection is to a work network etc.
I'm at work and it 's at home.... but I'm adamant that that it knows that the WiFi connection connects to the Intanet. As you say, I think that it is the default setting
However, I will check !
Any other MDA III owners shed any light on this ?
I managed to finally figure out how to use activesync without having to use a cradle. So far I haven't had the troubles that I have had when I used the cable and cradle. No more inactive activesync, can't synchronize errors, and having to restart activesync every few hours or so.
I managed to have activesync running for 2 days straight without any problems and restart of any sorts. This leads me to beleive that using wifi with activesync is more stable than using a usb/cradle.
My question is, can I completely abandon the USB/cradle when upgrading ROM, app installs, or anything that has to do with using the cradle and usb cables?
I don't know the answer for certain but I should think so.
What I need to know is how to sync using wifi without it trying to access GPRS instead.
Any ideas?
My 2s is configured to access wifi first (I think the setting is under the wifi config). If wifi isn't available, then it tried to access GPRS. My carrier charges an arm and a leg to use gprs, so I never configure the phone to access my carrier's GPRS. I rely on free public WIFI access and my home WIFI access to do all my internet jobs.
You'll still need the USB for ROM updates; everything else you can do over WiFi or BT.

Hi nomad,
im trying to configure my laptop wifi (peer-to-peer) and 2s. My 2s can connect to laptop wifi but the activesync is not performing connection or no connection at all. appreciate your help.
thanks.
@3waygeek, Thanks as I have not tried update anything since I pay a service to upgrade my things on my PPC. Sprite also does not like to backup via WiFi. I had to connect the PPC to the cradle.
@hoobas, I have WinXp/Sp2 installed. I have not had any problems connecting other than the occasional ActiveSync annoyance when I'm connecting with the USB cable. I'm sorry that I can't help you. I have not experience your problems so I can not give you a diagnosis.
wifi and MS Activsync
hi nomadman
can u let me know how u set up wifi to sync activesync? i have a WLAN at home and cannot see where the option is to use wifi to sync MS Activesync.
I also want to get away from having to use the cradle each time i want to sync . AT present i am doing it using infrared which is ok but like u said wifi must be better.
Also, i have two machines (a laptop and a desktop) in my wifi network. Desktop is hardwired and laptop hangs off wirelessly. How will my xda IIs know which machine to sync with?
cheers

ActiveSync starts automiatically on USB, serial, and Bluetooth connections. You'll have to use the ActiveSync link located on your PPC to connect to the PC via WiFi. This is assuming that ActiveSync does work on both your PPC and desktop. So it's best to connect to ActiveSync at least once via cradle before going ActiveSync via WiFi.
Only install ActiveSync on either your lappy or your deskop, but not on both. One limitation with ActiveSync is that you can not use more than two partnerships without some fiddling around with your PPC and your networked PC.
About Cradle ActiveSync.
Uninstall ActiveSync -> Reboot PC -> Reinstall Active Sync 3.8 and don't touch any thing or open any programs while installation is in progress.
Mine is working like a charm

How did you do it?
I've used the search function but I couldn't find anything about it.
Thanks,

OK, got it to work, too. Very nice
But I had to set my Network Connection from "Internet" to "Work".
Is it possible to use both settings? My Wireless LAN connects also
to the internet, so I won't switch everytime I want to sync or surf.

In the network settings of yr phone, enter the ip address of machine you want to sync with as WINS server. That will tell yr phone which machine it has to connect to. You can set up peak and offpeak timings in the mobile schedule of activsync on ye PDA, so that it can sync every 10 or 15 mins .
Sorry if my question is too noobish. I have read so many articles talking about establishing wifi sync between a wifi enabled PPC and a wifi enabled PC, but havent been able to do yet. Do i have to have another software to enable the connection ?
Can any one please explain slowly and in detail how you could do that, i've been searching for quite a long time but still no result. And 1 more question is that after i can sync through wifi between my O22s and my laptop, does it affect the wifi connection of my laptop and my O22s? A bit silly right but i'm a new user and i'm not in IT field also. Thanks for any suggestion from you guys.
@azeemakhtar,

@ducga,
1. Install ActiveSync 3.8 on your lappy or PC, but not on both.
2. connect to activesync via cradle first.
3. remove unit from the cradle and reset.
4. click on the ActiveSync link on your PPC and tap on the Sync button.
* The above procedure should be able to get activesync working via wifi as long as there isn't a setting problem in your router managment or firewall.
* The above precedure should work if your are able to connect to the interent on your PPC via wifi.

I also have to do the following:
3a. Click Start / settings / connections / Network cards
3b. Select Network Adapters
3c. Change 'My network card connects to' from 'The Internet' change to 'Work'
3d. Close, reset (for luck)
3e. Open ActiveSync on your desktop PC, select File / connection settings / and tick allow Network Ethernet !!
4. Now when you click on the ActiveSync link on your PPC and tap on the Sync button - it won't try to use GPRS to connect and WiFi will be listed as your Work connection.
I always have to change my network card settings back to 'The Internet' before I can browse again.

Go to ActiveSync on your XDA, click tools, options.
It will say "When syncing remotely with a PC Use this PC:"
It should list the network name of the PC you currently have a partnership with. i.e. "TOMSLAPTOP"

Hi,
Since AS 4.2 came out I have problems to use USB Internet passthrough in Activesync, als AS 4.5 did not solve this problem. I googled around a lot and also searched in xda forums but everyone is giving other instructions, some say this, some say it the other way. It also does not depend on the rom, I had the same problem on the wizard and now also with my TyTN on wm5 and wm6 roms.
So my question is: How to enable USB internet passthrough on ActiveSync 4.5? At the moment my desktop activesync is set to "automatic" in the connection settings, and on my device under Settings->Connections->Connections->Advanced->Select Networks I have "Orange Internet" as the connection which connects to the internet (which has in the proxy settings "this network connects to the internet" enabled). and the work connection is "My ISP" which has no settings at all. I tried to add a new network connection but didn't even know which Modem I have to choose and so I gave this up.
I also tried to set my desktop activesync to either use "Work" or "Internet" instead of automatic but when I try to use Opera, Internet Explorer or any other program like downloading the weather data all programs say that the host or page cannot be found or report a network error.
Can anyone help with this, I'm really very desperate... Cause I also tried to find the correct settings for hours now, but without luck...
Thanks for any help with this subject.

do you use a proxy server for this pass through connection? what activesync partnership do you have setup "Guest" or a Normal one...
First to be able to use passthrough you must be connected to your PC via USB and thus connected to active sync. Active Sync should be fully set-up.
First question;
Can you synchronize your data through Active Sync 4.5.
If yes. Try to tick all the items in the desktop active sync> connections settings. On the space "this computer is connected to" select automatic
second: Can your PC connect to the internet?
If yes open the PC Internet Explorer and try to browse, then, while connected at USB, open Pocket Internet Explorer in your mobile and try to browse. You should be connected to the internet then. Good Luck!!
If still you wouldnt connect there must be wrong on your Active Sync partnership set-up

I don't use any proxy server for connecting to the internet, my PC is directly connected to a NAT Router, as well as my linux box and my girlfriends computer and all work perfect.
As for the activesync partnership, where do I see the type of my partnership or in other words, what is a "guest" partnership? The only thing I see is that my device is named "WM_marc1" and that activesync items sync perfectly but the internet passthrough won't work.
I hope you can give me further advice with this information. Thanks for you help

My data synchronizes perfectly through AS 4.5 and I have already checked all items in connection settings. Of course my computer is connected to the internet (see reply to walshieau) and honestly IE and pocket IE have nothing to do with internet passthrough, it's all about TCP/IP subnetting, bridging, tunnelling or whatever method AS 4.5 uses for internet passthrough.
Sorry if i am not explicit...but i hope this helps. For my wizard i remember i had to install a reg on the PC. It did some changes to the Active Sync registry.
The bad is that i don't have that reg

Ok followed the procedures. I think anyone of them works. Mine worked by changing on PC activesync to "this computer is connected to: The Internet". Nothing else worked. I had the reg hack from the time of my beloved Wizard!
go to:
start -> settings -> connections -> advanced -> select network
make sure that
"programs that automaticaly connect to the internetshould connect using"
"my work network" and not "my isp"
then go to
start -> settings -> connections -> usb to pc
and make sure to uncheck "enable advanced network functionality"
that should do it

Still not working
Why can't someone come up with an ACTUAL solution to this?
When I connect my Tilt to the PC it automatically passes the internet connection through the PC. I did the registry fix and tried all four settings (0, 1, 10, 11) and still my data connection on the phone is overridden by the active sync desktop pass-through. I turned off the advanced networking option and still it goes through the PC. I even went through all the settings in active sync for "This computer is connected to" even though that doesn't even look like it would affect which connection my phone uses. This seems more like a setting within active sync on the phone more than anything.
I use my phone at work for chatting on yahoo IM (with Palringo) since my company network is filtered. I use a program called MyMobiler to transfer the phone display and controls to the PC so I can use my desktop keyboard for the chat program instead of my phone's keypad. Since the network is filtered the internet connection on my phone is filtered too since it's passed through the desktop when I active sync it to use MyMobiler. Sometimes Palringo will hold the connection even after I've connected to the desktop and sometimes it won't.
Bottom line here is can someone come up with an real working solution to this problem that a LOT of people are having?
HOW TO DISABLE DESKTOP PASSTHROUGH WHEN CONNECTING WITH ACTIVESYNC. Search that on google and here and all you will find are people saying "Yeah I have that problem too" or people telling how to connect WITH desktop passthrough.
I have a similar issue. I have my phone connected to my work PC to charge / sync, but all Internet connections attempted by the phone are being routed through my work network until I unplug the USB.
Naturally, that's very bad since all Internet traffic is logged by my work and many sources are blocked. I have an unlimited data plan on my phone. Why can't I stay connected to it when I'm hooked to ActiveSync?
I read someplace that Windows Mobile has an order of preference where connections are concerned. Probably hard line, then wi-fi, 3G and then EDGE. Surely there must be some way to modify this order of preference.
The thread is missunderstood...
The problem here is give to the PPC internet via usb... providede by a PC...
The solution that REG (that works for me EVER!!!).
And now other one provide internet to my PC via usb on phone account
With apologies, I'm not sure I understood what you said there.
But, some of us are actually trying to stop receiving internet by the USB.
I would like the phone to initiate a wireless 3G connection even when connected to the PC. But, thus far, all settings I've tried still cause my phone to attempt to access my business network here at my company.
Big no-no.
have you finally solved the problem?
If so just like to ask if you have change your homepage in ppc? which is
file://windows/default_0409.htm?
and have not run your network wizard? then maybe I have the solution here
Reg key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer/AboutURLs/
usually it is ( default value )
A.Blank value is res://webview.dll/blank.htm
B.Home_0409 value isfile://windows/default_0409.htm
C.version_0409value isfile://windows/default_0409.htm
if there is a new reg in that one try to delete that file again using a registry explorer ( depends on what you use to view the file)
turn it off for about 30 secs then soft reset... I hope this helps out
I'm not sure that addresses the issue, or mine at least. My phone disables HSDPA the moment I plug the USB cable into the phone and Active Sync takes over. It's before I even open a browser.
Not only does the phone start looking for Internet over the USB Active Sync connection, it looks for non browser related things like weather updates and sending mail to the gmail server.
Somewhere, it's coded to have an order of preference in what kind of connection it accesses. By default, it seems to look for any available land line connection, possibly wi-fi next, then 3G and then EDGE. I'd like to take the land line connection completely out of the equation.
I upgraded my Cingular 8525 today to Windows Mobile 6 with no problems that I can see except for one annoying thing.
When I have my device connected to my desktop, I get an error when trying to sync with my Exchange server.
I have my 8525 set up for Microsoft Direct Push. In the past, the 8525 would sync with Exchange through my computer and it's network connection. Now this not seem to work since upgrading to Windows Mobile 6.

Many thanks to the folks who discovered this fix. You would think ActiveSync would have put this entry in itself. I was seeing both error code 85020006 and error code 80072f7d.
One simple registry edit and all is working perfectly. See below:

Same Problem
I know this problem, but never found a working solution.
I can uncheck "Advanced Network Functionality", or change to "Work" under connection settings to succesfully sync with Exchange again, but thats not an option for me.
I want to have work and internet connection at the same time, because I also want to sync my IMAP account over the internet, and update my Weather Forecast automatically.
I know when I hard reset my device, it will work again, but I already did a clean install 1 week ago.
Who really knows why its working one day, and the next day it isn't working anymore???
I guess the problem occurs while using exchange-sync and IMAP at the same time. I had exactly the same problem. And in general, there is a problem with new ROMs since other users have to disable "advanced usb mode". That wasn't the case with older versions of WM6.
This helped for me:
1) Using Black Satin ROM
2) Do not use Schaps Advanced Configuration Tool
But my point is:
WHY is it working for several weeks, and then suddenly it STOPS working??
There must be an explanation isn't it?
It seems to be a problem with my PPC, cause when I perform a hard reset it will work again(but who knows for how long?)

guys i updated my .net framework n the roms r gettin updated but my sync still doesnt work
Just another data point... I had the same issue with my Mogul. I tried all the settings changes (Internet, Disable Advanced USB, etc, etc) Nothing worked until i read the MS thread and noticed someone got it working by turning on wifi and then turning it off. Worked for me also. Seems like some settings are getting cached somewhere....
Sorry for digging up and old thread, but I thought I would share something related to this subject.
I recently got a new Kaiser and Dell D830 laptop supplied by my work and was quite annoyed to be getting the 80072f7d error when syncing my exchange email via activesync while connected to my laptop with a USB cable.
I had came across the allowlsp registry setting which resolved the error, but since I was away on a 3 week work trip with nothing much to do, and not being happy about basically disabling a new 'feature' to make something work I was determined to get things working the way they should.
Going by the below articles I noticed that the registry entry either enabled or disabled Activesync desire to use LSP's (Layered Service Providers).
http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/sams...3050-activesync-4-2-internet-pass-thru-2.html
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/troubleshoot.mspx
As the first link clearly states, Activesync ability to use LSP's is a good thing:
This allows for improved compatibility in environments where connections to the internet must be passed through these LSPs

So in situations where one might be using their laptop in numerous different locations and on different networks (airports, hotels etc) we would want it left on.
As per the second link:
When other applications install additional LSPs....
Click to collapse
It pointed to the fact that some other application installed on my laptop must be causing the problem.
A quick google on "Layered Service Provider" Dell found me an article on the Dell website mentioning that:
Some versions of the Wave software written for Dell include the file biolsp.dll that adds Wave's Layered Service Provider (LSP) to the Winsock catalog, which...htm Future releases of Wave software written for Dell will not include biolsp.dll.
Click to collapse
So I figured...hmm...I have a bum LSP on my machine, and I have crazy pre-installed Dell software which uses one which is known to cause strange problems. A quick deinstall and reboot later and now Activesync is back working the way Microsoft intended...using LSP's but capable of syncing via pass-thru connection.
I'm happy to have found problem/cause/solution instead of a potentially problem causing workaround....and it passed an hour or two in a lonely Hotel room...win win
other solution
this was posten in on of other messages and it worked great for me...
Delete the partnership with Activesync then reconnect my device and it started working again.
(Make sure you phone is not connected to the USB)
Open Activesync --> File --> Delete Mobile Device
fix outlook, and advance options off did not help..

This fixed also my Problem with 80072f7d
Heres the situation:
I'd like to use my computer's internet connection. So I plug in my phone and select USB internet pass-through in the popup dialog. The problem is that after about a minute or two it fails, with a popup saying that either I don't have HTC Sync installed or another phone is using it, whereas none of it is true. I do have the very latest of HTC Sync and driver installed.
I am running Vista (Home Premium) and using a USB 3G Modem. The phone is stock HTC Desire Z (EU).
Please bear in mind that I just don't have any other way to connect my phone to the computer or the internet other than the way I am trying. Also I don't want to root the phone. Not yet.
I have tried:
Installing HTC Sync & drivers through "Run as administrator".
While the phone was trying to activate the mode I tried reseting the local area connection (this shows up when you select the mode) - worked for a while, kept disconnecting me every few minutes.
I first activated the internet passthrough (somehow it activated) then connected the usb 3g modem - this worked it didn't disconnect me, but after a restart (the next day) none of the above worked. The phone seemed to be confused because in the wireless & networks it said that "connect to a pc through usb, please" - acted like its not connected at all.
I know that the phone should be ok, because at work (WinXP) it enables in a few seconds - although cannot use internet bec. android does not support proxies.
The passthrough service is running.
I have disabled the firewall.
Any ideas would be very welcome..
1.Right click on the network icon in the task bar
2.Click on Open network connections
3. There would be two local are connections. Find out your HTC mobiles connection.
4.Right Click and select properties.
5. select Internet TCP/IP and click on properties
6. Select Obtain an IP adress automatically
