Trying to decide... - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Hi all - sorry about the guest post, i'm not yet registered but having problems with my email so i'll register properly asap!
Been trying to decide what Blue Angel device to get, so far it's down to the MDA3 or M2k as i really object to o2's obnoxious customer service attitude. however before i get one, can someone answer me some questions?
1) The WiFi - i have a wifi network at home, can the phone browse files and folders on these machines as easily as "network places" on the PC desktop? EG if i have media player running on the phone, can i stream mp3s over the wifi by going into my pc's hdd and choosing the files i want? Then i can hook my phone into the hifi system downstairs and play mp3s through that.
2) What's the battery life like for, say, 1-2 hours talking a day plus a fair bit of fiddling - non-radio stuff like playing games and 'tweaking'.
3) Does the MMC slot support SDIO for a plug-in GPS reciever, or do i need to look at a Bluetooth or wired one (like the TomTom)
4) Is it a walled garden system or can i install any software and go to any websites?
5) Will it charge through the USB Connector or does the ac adaptor need to be plugged into it too? My original SPV wouldn't but my gf's E500 will charge from USB alone.
Thanks a lot....

1) It doesn't support this out of the box, but I believe there is software available. Not really my "thing" though.
2) I get a couple of days from normal useage. For example, it came off the charger at 5pm on Friday and went back on again at 8am this (Monday) morning with about 15% left. A few phone calls, checking e-mail and bit of surfing over wi-fi, bluetooth on most of the time both for headset and testing out my new TomTom GPS, lots of PIM useage.
3) It does support SDIO, but I don't know of an SDIO GPS receiver and, even if there were, it would take up your only memory slot so the maps would have to go into internal memory. I've opted for the TomTom bluetooth and it seems to work fine.
4) Totally open.
5) It trickle charges through the USB. I leave mine in the cradle at work and it takes about 4-5 hours for a full charge.

Hello,
1) Browsing files on another device is something I haven't done but I'm sure there are ways of doing it. Not sure if the Windows Media Player (V9) can cope with that kind of file streaming. As the headphone socket is not a standard one you probably wont be able to hook it up to the hi-fi straight out of the box. Check the forums for posts on this.
2) Battery life is good on these. The WiFi is the battery eater. I do a fair few phone calls, some tweaking and WiFi and from 8am to 11pm I'm on about 70-60% battery life!
3) As far as I know, the card slot on top is SD only (i will soon be corrected if I'm wrong) but I do know that it is SDIO so cards with extra features should be compatible.
4) You CAN'T install any software you like. You can only install PocketPC applications. There may be some differences between version of PocketPC (eg, 2002 - 2003) but most of them work ok. With regards to the website, about 80% of the ones I go to are ok. The ones that need Java or Macromedia can be a problem.
5) The BlueAngel's can all charge from the USB Cradle alone. I keep my AC Adapter at me Fiancee's for when I stay over there
Hope this helps!
Dom

Thanks for the replies guys... just to clarify, i didn't mean ANY software, i meant pocket PC stuff - i'm used to my original SPV that would only allow Orange-approved software for quite a while until they allowed you to unlock the software side of it via the website, and again my Symbian A920 on Three did the same thing before i hacked some binaries!
I had a play with my friends M2k, we got it to read a mp3 from a wireless PC but you had to specify it in media player, although we could browse the folders on the PC by entering the location (eg \\HOMEPC\SharedFolder) in File Manager on the M2k, there seemed to be no way of opening the MP3 directly.... however going to media player and using the Play Location (URL) and entering \\HOMEPC\SharedFolder\Track1.mp3 worked fine, the music played on the handset. However it's a bit of a ballache to enter every track name! I assume this may be fixed in Media Player 10....
Thanks for the help on the other stuff... you completely disagreed with several phone shops on the charging this, but you were entirely right!

Wi-Drive - Use direct WiFi bet PPC & hard disk

Imagine using Wi-Fi for direct connection between your laptop/PPC (and other end devices) to an external hard disk. Imposssible?
Just read this:-
http://www.edslab.com/products.htm
The product will be launched this coming July 06. Initially, it'll connect to your laptop/notebook. After which driver will be developed for PPC application.
No more expensive memory cards
You can also look at Asus WL-HDD - althogh this one have some advantages, like the battery and 1.8" size.
I just hope it will be released and that the price will not be too much.
RE
If I remembers correctly ASUS WL-HDD requires connection through an access point/router whereas the main selling point of Wi-Drive is its direct connection between end devices WITHOUT the need to go through the access point/router. However, you can also network the drive through an access point/router
I'm using Wl-Hdd since it's release to get my files from my pda. It's working like a charm. It is an access point and router, and you can make it a full linux server easily
Hi,
Just a question and a thought...
With the WL-HDD, is it stand-alone? i.e. does it have an internal power source - or must be connected via a power adaptor?
And can it connect directly to the HTC Universal (without need of a switch or router?).
My thought is, I wonder if anyone has tried to connect an IPOD to a PPC device? wouldn't that be an ideal external HDD device?

The WL-HDD does not have built in battery, you need power adaptor unfortunately.

I haven't tried yet (still deciding if I should buy it or not), but since it's an Access Point it should connect no problem.

IPOD is not Wireless, you can use it only as an USB memory device.
People had connected their IPODS to USB Host enabled PPCs like FS Loox and it worked fine. Unfortunately there are no HTC converged devices with USB Host functionality at the moment.
Wl-hdd work perfectly as a stand alone product with any PPC. I'm using it for 1,5 years now and it is perfectly working on my universal. No physical connection needed except power source.
As for the Ipod, if you change the wl-hdd firmware, you can connect any USB device in the USB port to get access to it's files. So you cannot plug the ipod to the universal, but you can plug the ipod to the wl-hdd then access it through universal
RE
Some pictures of Wi-Drive here:-
http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/13/live-from-cebit-the-widrive-wifi-drive-enclosure/
The enclosure comes with a female connector for the hard disk which means hard disk like the 1.8 inch Toshiba (which comes with a female connector) cannot be used
That leaves us with the 1.8 inch Hitachi brand which comes with a male connector. Not much choice for the 1.8 inch hard disk since currently only 1.8 inch hard disks are only available from Toshiba and Hitachi
RE
Just spoke to the manufacturer of Wi-Drive today
They will release the drive this coming July. I think I can get one from them before it goes to the market
Capacity : Casing comes with 30 and 60 GB 5400 rpm hard disk (for 1.8 inch)
Best of all!! Can connect direct with PPC besides notebook/laptop. They've an engineering test unit. Just waiting for production now.
Here's the explanation using WiFi. The drive will be recognised as a web folder instead of a drive by the PPC. This web folder will consists of your folders and files and you'll have to use IE browser to access them. Power input is 5V DC using mini USB which means you can charge it from your notebook/laptop USB ports or any external battery pack whihc provides a 5V DC output.
WOW!! Can't wait to lay my hand on one of these
at least there responding to someone...
they dont respond at all to any mails from me :?
i dont know if i like the web folder thingy though...
would prefer if it just showed trough the file explorer, does resco explorer show web folders?
did they tell you the prices with the 30 and 60gb and without any HD?

"did they tell you the prices with the 30 and 60gb and without any HD?"
Nope. No pricing figure for the moment. They don't sell to end users because they're the manufacturer. The actual pricing will depend on the retail shops

No idea
I guess we just have to sit back and wait patiently
RE
OK, tested the WiDrive on my Universal today
Looks pretty cool...comes with Hitachi 1.8" 30GB hard disk
Managed to get it connected with my Universal using WiFi and access WiDrive using internet by typing a certain address on the address bar. The drive is treated as a web folder
Once login to WiDrive I'm able to download files to play (or save it) on my Universal
Also, can use my external 8800mAH battery pack (purchased from EastGear) to charge the WiDrive
Some issues though
a) cannot upload file from my SD card to WiDrive...hmmm
b) after playing a song I'll need to re-type the address at the PIE address bar in order to return to WiDrive
c) I think music and video cannot be streamed while playing on the Universal. What I mean is I'll need to download the music/video file to my Universal and the concerned program will be auto activated to play the music/video file.....have to check this further otherwise the drive just acts like another drive
Did not buy yet so no testing on notebook carried out. According to the shop streaming was done using the notebook as a driver is required to be installed on the notebook.
Well, I've discussed with WiDrive's boss on the above issues. Will discuss with their engineer tomorrow and feedback here.
Wow, its an experience. Cost about US$263
RE
Sorry for the late reply
There're some changes. I'll be getting a 1.8 inch 60GB IDE Hitachi Travelstar and the Wi-Drive casing separately (cheaper this way) by this weekend. If everything works out fine I'll be reporting back
BTW, I was told by the engineer of EDSLAB that OPERA works better than PIE on their drive
RE
Sorry, due falls apart. For the 1.8" hard disk Wi-Drive comes with standard 30GB
60GB version will be released later
Some pictures of Wi-Drive here:-
http://sg.vr-zone.com/index.php?i=3827
Hmm... Widrive looks good, but WL-HDD is still better in my mind. It can run off a battery (all PSP emergency batterys work, imagine my joy at finding that out!) ,it has an ethernet port for intergration to home networks (you can use it as a wireless access point) and it has USB host, so you can share USB drives, webcams, everything. It also comes up to 100gb, and i bet you itll be cheaper. you could even swap in a 1.8" hdd into the housing and put the battery in the space left, making it a neat solution.
RE
I've bought the Wi-Drive but only for 30GB model and still testing it
Initial test with OPERA gives pretty good results

lol... i wouldnt buy one of those. Max = 100mbps on wireless. On wired USB 2.0 or Firewire = 480mbps or 800mbps i think. I use my diamondmax 11 or my cheetah scsi 15k rpm drive and it goes really quick. I put it on wifi by hooking it up to another computer and mapping it or just use remote access. Anything is possible nowadays, i dont have to tell it to you. But it seems this hard drive can exist independently when signal is available. I dont know how that works but i am sure you need a lcd display to select a network or to enter the key. Just like microsoft Zune? Why dont you guys go for microsoft Zune now that i think of it. ^^

The point of these drives is mass storage on the universal. Read the thread before posting.

Working External Hard Drive for Universal

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=280062 Covers it in better detail, but here is the basic idea (fully working on my Exec for a few months now)
WL-HDD with Oleg firmware. Easy to flash, google it.
PSP Emergency Battery (the one i recommend is good, but any battery with an output current greater then 1000mA seems to work)
Resco file explorer
Connect to the hard drive over Wi-fi (looks just like any other AP)
Map the network drive in Resco (tap-hold the network icon in the explorer)
...Thats it. Appears like a storage card, and files you access are streamed to the device unless you choose to copy them.
Works amazingly, just put the hard drive in a bag or in your car, and access at your leisure.
How does it work with music and/or movie files? This really interesting!
Have you used it w/ TCPMP or other movie players? Can you run executables/programs stored on it for your PDA?
i was looking for something like this but cannot find a version that will translate the us dollar amounts.
Meassure of hd

YESSS !!!!! I saw your experience in other post... And finally I bought one. Could you recomend me where to buy a cheap notebook hd in europe?... I am looking for 120 GB or 100 GB... it's ok for you this GB?
Thanks a lot.
The only adequate solution available (AFAIK)
Wi-Fi drives are good but bulky a little bit (and also battery-consuming), however sometime ago I saw some USB hard drive Transcend StoreJet 1.8" OTG USB designed especially for PDAs, MP3 players etc. As far as I recall it had its own battery (up to 4.5 hours operation), so it should work with Universal as well.

Yes, but my solution costs £50-£100, depending on where you get it. The drive is big, but as long as you have a bag its fine, just chuck it in the bottom.

This automatically streams media files when opened off the drive. Not sure about .exe, but i see no reason why not. I know it can open ROMs off it using pocket snes.

According to the link below the device does support PDA, however, the Universal's USB port is meant for charging only and not meant for data transfer unless there's a driver written for it

But don´t work ti me (at the moment)
Hi,
I finally bougth the WL-HDD and a Thosiba Hd 120 GB.... I put the 1.9.2.7-7e Oleg firmeware...
But
1. I don´t know how to access the Wl-hdd, At the moment I can access to the configuration... and conect to it with the universal.
2. Do I have to format the Hard Drive previously?
2. In this case how to format it?
3. I know how wiew in Resco explorer my pc folders... buw I can´t see the Asus...
Do you can give me any recomendation? Perhaps, some links of the asus forum that you follow?

Yes, the Transcend StoreJet OTG hard disk drive do have 2 modes.
One is for data transfer - In this mode it acts just like any external hard disk connecting to PC and laptops ("Peripheral" mode)
As quoted
“Standalone” mode allows the StoreJet OTG to function as a host into which a huge range of USB devices can be directly connected for information exchange, backup, management and storage.
But this does not mean you can connect directly to the Pocket PC/PDA and perfrom data transfer. For using the USB port of your PDA/Pocket PC for data transfer that USB post has to eb a host whichi you only can find in a few PDAs like the ACER and LOOX. Alternatively, you can buy a CF USB host card to perform the same function.
In fact if you'll to buy any external OTG USB 2.0 hard disk you'll find that they comes with these 2 modes of transfer. FYI, I do own OTG hard disk.
Instead of using the thread starter's WL-HDD Wi-Fi hard disk you can also use Wi-Drive (below) which I'm using
http://www.edslab.com/products.htm
Advantages are that it comes with a built-in battery or you can connect it using an external hi-cap battery pack without using an AC charger. Another thing is that this Wi-Fi hard disk connects DIRECT to your PDA/Pocket PC WITHOUT the need of going through a wireless network

I went to the link you provided and the tab say "Untitled Document"meaning that someone built a site with only one page and you cannot navigate through the site.Although i did do a google search and found the WIDrive but only in overseas markets not here in the United States,Thus expanding my research.I went to Froogle and found several companies that sell them for as low as $95.00.I called the company that i ordered my storejet from and provided the information and they did give me a full refund which i am going to use to purchase the drive that you posted.that is what i really need.Something that i can connect to by wifi and not have to use my home network in order to connect to the drive itself and also freeing up the need to have a ton of cables and cords scattered here and there. So thanks again
Also where did you purchase?i tried several sites and sent out emails but did not find something or someone that gave me suffice information about the wi-drive.Also ,can you use the wifi on your phone to connect to the drive without the need for a network service?Like if you or on the interstate and want to connect to the drive without cables? It does not state on the site or with anyone i spoke to.I am in the united states and would like to know where to get one from .as a soon as you get a chance to reply.

I've no problem accessing Wi-Drive site. BTW, Pocket IE don't work well with this drive if you're using with your PDA. You need OPERA to work.
Some pointers include you'll need to purchase your external battery pack if you need to use it outdoor for longer than the specified time. The drive's AC adapter output voltage is 5V and the current is 2A. 2A is a lot of current for fast charging from any battery pack.
What I learnt from their engneer sometimes back is that they're looking into a 60GB version and an external battery pack too.

Vista vs. Orbit: no-score draw.

This problem is driving me to distraction, when I plug my orbit (o2, WM6 ROM) into my vista (home premium) laptop the phone shows up in my computer but when I click on it to open so I can add files... nothing. Not just nothing in that window but other programmes cease to respond. Firefox won't find websites, Thunderbird cannot find pop server, nothing, the only thing that does continue to function is WMP still plays music without hesitation or pause, which is nice, if only was listening to something a little more soothing.
It has worked intermittently in the past (works fine with my old Wizard (I keep him around for casting spells and such like.) and I have to same problem with the Orbit regardless of which wire I use.
I wonder if it may be the USB socket in the phone which is the problem, possibly it was damaged when the ridiculous headphone plug was inserted and it got somewhat knocked in the pocket of some rather tight jeans with my hand thrust in there too.
Any help, hints or placation greatly appreciated.
tl;dr: can't transfer to phone from vista, help?
Well I dont really know what your problem is, but if your only wanting to transfer stuff from PC to Orbit SD card then try Wm5torage for a quick fix until you get the issue solved.
Go to start|settings|system - usb to PC and uncheck "enable advanced etc"

Brilliant, works like a charm. One wonders what the 'advanced' settings are actually for if all they seem to do is stop it from working.
Thank you.

[Q] galaxy s3 and 2010 Volkswagen audio

Just bought a 2010 gti.. which I'm loving.. I am excited to have a car with Bluetooth..
I got it paired to the Bluetooth system OK, it plays music as tho I had a headphone jack plugged in..
It will play call audio over the speakers and evidently the microphone, where ever it is, is working because people can hear me..
BUT.. I still need to use my phone to make or answer a call.. I've seen in videos people are using the car to browse their contact list and make a call.. I do not appear to have this functionality.. just curious if I could hit the jackpot here with someone who has had this problem
I'm running a custom ICS touchwiz ROM
Tia if anyone has any info on this

Hi! I have a 2012 GTI and just switched 2 days ago from iPhone 4s to GS3. The way I did it I made sure to be in neutral (manual transmission), paired the phone and let it sync address book and everything worked. I suggest you remove the phone from the car and car from phone and try everything again. Im running Blazer ROM[9/23/12][Sup?][LG8][v1.9]
Nice! I knew someone on xda would have one.. do your settings look like this?
The phone audio troubles Me... I feel like it should reference contacts in some way..

Don't have gs3 any more. Click those 2 check boxes and see what happens

In 2010, VW had multiple BT systems. Unfortunately, it sounds like you have the lesser of the 3 (as do I).
I forget the model #'s, but basically there's a top end version that's part of the NAV system which uses the navscreen nicely. Then there is a version used in all the marketing materials that has steering wheel controls and uses the cluster info display for your address book / caller ID. THEN -- there's the real low end, crummy one that just interfaces as an audio cut in with no other integration. This is what I have. You still need your phone for all features except picking up a call (the button on the ceiling can begin / end a call). Lame.
I think your build date determined which BT system is in your car. The good (middle) system was only for very early units. IIRC, there was a class action lawsuit against VW about this - I opted in, still waiting for my check...

That is generally covered by media. For example, my 2009 Ford focus has a similar system (SYNC) which will download contacts into a small address book and save them for me but doesn't reference contacts in the bluetooth settings area.

i am bumping my crazy old thread with another VW GS3 question if anyone has any info:
Based on the reply i got, i definately have the crappy bluetooth.. its just audio output, and it sucks, i still have to use the phone to navigate through music.
the car came with a iOS adaptor.. which does me no good..
i've done some research and have found this: http://www.amazon.com/Newest-interface-Adapter-Volkswagen-Touareg/dp/B004I9CXHW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1370563911&sr=8-1&keywords=vw+micro+usb
coupled with this: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Inch-Micro-USB-Cable/dp/B003YKX6WM/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1370564040&sr=8-6&keywords=usb+micro+usb
i would have a micro USB adaptor that would plug into the propietary mmi port..
our phones don't use USB mass storage however.. has anyone tried this? looking for experiences before i pull the trigger if anyone can help.

Yes the bluetooth sounds horrible
Here's what I did, and it works beautifully..
I picked up the MDI USB adapter, fed a 6ft USB>micro USB through the center console to the dash where I fashioned a phone 'mount' from my Otterbox belt clip.
I noticed it was kind of clunky, and very slow (would take up to a minute for the Premium 8 to even recognize the S3) using the stupid MMS mode. It did work however. I did some research on enabling USB mass storage and found this app: SG USB Mass Storage Enablerhttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mohammadag.samsungusbmassstorageenabler&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5tb2hhbW1hZGFnLnNhbXN1bmd1c2JtYXNzc3RvcmFnZWVuYWJsZXIiXQ.. It does require root, with Busy Box installed. Now the P8 recognizes the phone in seconds, and is very fast. The app is also nice for syncing content (more on that later). If your phone reboots, you will need to re-enable UMS. I handled that thru Tasker so each time the phone reboots it executes the shortcut that enables UMS. Works seamlessly.. Please note that UMS ONLY works on the S3's external micro sd card. It works great on my S3 but YMMV..
Now as far as syncing content I wanted something as close to iTunes as possible. Part of my mission was to divorce myself from all things "i"- iTunes, iPod, and of course iPhone. But iTunes has always worked well for me in terms of syncing content. Did some more research and found a nice music manager called 'MusicBee'- http://getmusicbee.com/ With UMS enabled it syncs my content very fast.. MMS not so much. On a side note, why they got rid of UMS is beyond me..
Now to handle playlists, and since I primarily use playlists in the car, I use MusicBee to sync those to a standard SD card and plug that into the slot on the P8. Don't use anything larger than 32gig as the P8 only 'sees' 500 folders. There is no limitation when using the MDI port so this limitation doesn't apply the the phone's storage.
One thing I want to mention is that if you want to be able to shuffle across all your folders you need to make sure to put a random MP3 in the root of your devices SD card. Start playing that song first, hit mix and you can shuffle across your entire library.
All browsing is done via the headunit just as you would an iPod. All tag info is displayed on the headunit as well, with the only exception being you can only browse the content of the phone's micro SD- so folder structure is important. The nice thing about this is that you can run other apps (I run Torque) since the MDI is only sees the S3 as a storage device, so hands free calling still works.
It also keeps the phone charged
Here's a few pics of my setup:
Any questions, don't hesitate to ask..

first of all, thanks a TON for the detailed reply..
based on your advice i went ahead and grabbed http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004I9CXHW/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and a USB http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001QE03GK/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
i run a rooted rom so grabbed busybox and USB MS enabler.. we'll see how it goes! if not, im out 20 bucks.. whatever haha.. either way its very nice to here from someone with the same set up
Grabbed this too as insurance, at least it will sound better than before
i did also find a 16gb sd i had laying around so i threw that in the car yesterday, but my main device for music is my phone so it would be nice to have everything in one place. Even that is very nice to be able to navigate on the head unit as opposed to scrolling through my phone whilst bluetoothing.
if i may be so bold, are you using something like an OBD2 bluetooth adaptor for that torque app? do you have any recomendations for picking 1 vs the other? would be great to hear from a mk6 owner. there are a ton to choose from http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_3_11?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=bluetooth+obd2&sprefix=bluetooth+o%2Celectronics%2C253

AutoMate - Android Auto replacement using a tablet

Since AutoMate (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bitspice.automate) has been released in its first stable version I'm thinking about making my car 'smart'.
Until now I don't have any navigation system or else in my car, just a radio. But this app might replace the need to have to buy an Android Auto unit for about 500 bucks or even more.
The way I'm thinking about implementing it would be by using a 7" tablet, anything slightly bigger might be okay as well.
But I'm not sure about how exactly I should start.
My problems:
I think I need a special LTE data plan for the tablet (sharing the data plan of my phone via hotspot is not very intuitive)
Which tablet? (SIM card slot ruins many reasonable ones)
The small things: how to charge the tablet, how to fix it in my car, how to connect audio so my car plays its music
Another very important question: how do I get my phone's notifications on the tablet?
Is there anybody of you already running such a start up?
Or is there anybody planning to do so? What are your approaches?
I want to get this started and with your help I hope I will do so!
you really don't need a data plan for your car. Unless you drive more than 10 hours a day.
My Setup is easy. My cell phone is with me all the time and the internet sharing via Bluetooth is always enabled.
The Android will connect to it using a free tool named BT auto connect whenever the screen is turned on.
So you will have nothing to do but just power your tablet when you start the car.
It will automatically connect and share your phone's internet. It is energy friendly with BT with decent speed for most application except video streaming. (200KB max)
Nexus 7 2013 was the best option for this implementation, and the most common set up involved a paid kernel.
Search (USB ROM Nexus 7 on google). However, I found my tablet drain a lot of battery without reasons.
