There is no need to buy this program just put any MP3 files in your "rings" folder in the windows folder on your PPC Phone and then they will come up in the ring tone list when you pick ringtones. It's then free. We all love FREE.

in case you dont know, MP3 format cannot be supported as incoming ringtones for the XDA II, XDA IIs

I have an XDAII and was able to use MP3 as ring tones without any issues, either with 1.72 or 2.20 ROM.

no, the IIs does NOT support MP3 in the phone ringer app. The device can play MP3s via media player etc, but they are not supported as ring tones.
WMA is supported as ring tones.
No major biggie for me as I don't wanna use the full bitrate MP3 as a ring anyway - just conver to a Mono 22Khz 48bps WMA instead and only convert the 30 secs - 1 min that the phone would actually ring for.

guys... just use a free prog (I use audacity) to convert to wma.
You generally don't want all of a stereo mp3 as a ring anyway.
I just take the bit of the mp3 I want as a clip in audacity, and convert it to mono mp3 with a low bitrate. I generally turn the db up as high as it will go (without clipping) as well as you want a ring loud. Audacity will also loop a clip and let you trim it to get it to loop just right.
Then just pop the wma in the rings folder and viola !

How do you get Audacity to convert to .wma??? it only does .wav, .ogg, and .mp3 - as far as I can see..... :?

Mamaich's new WMP10 rom (found in the Blue Angel upgrading forum) gives the XDAIII mp3 ringtone support.

On MS website (Windows Media downloads section) there is a free down load that will convert MP3 to WMA, will even do Bulk folders if you want

Yes you can upgrade your rom to 1.33.51 for mp3 ringtones and wmp 10.
i had upgrade two days ago, and worked it in my IIs

mp3 ringtones
copy your mp3 ringtones to directory windows/rings in your device.
and setting your notification phone call with them.
or you can install patch englishmp3ringtone.cab (find this file in ftp xda developer)

Thanks, but I can set one MP3 ringtone only, and cannot select other MP3 files in \Windows\Rings from Sound & Notifications settings. In addition, my MTUX ringtoneX 2.0 does not work with MP3 ringtone. Any suggestion? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm from Malaysia. I've already upgraded my XDA IIs rom to version 1.33.51 also. But my device also cooked with IA Caller ID version 1.20.
I can assign any ringtone to any contact including mp3 format using the program (Caller ID 1.20). Try it. Thanks.

Use PHM registory or Resco registry for accessing the registry on your device.
HKCR\wavefile\Shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\ (Where HKCR is the HK Current User)
copy the key "{E88B4A18-6F77-Abb6-8E0D-DCD4B1F8F1DA}"
Then go to HKCR\mp3file\Shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\
and create a key by pasting the above.
Voila there is your mp3 ringtone. Check and let us knowl.

.WAV items do not play???

Ever since I got my XDA IIs, any .wav file i add to my pda, i cannot play it... When i click on the file, the little rectangular box comes up and I press play. Less than a second after het, it stops playing... this means I can't use any wav files as ringtones!
I can olny play them using a 3rd party app (Betaplayer)...
Has anyone else experiened this problem, or does anyone have a fix?

Don't have this problem on my Qtek 9090 and can't imagine why it doesn't work for you. The Windows default ringtone is .wav !!! Does this work ?

all the default ones work, but whatever other .wav files I put on don't work?!
Its really annoying 'cos all the default ones are really crap!

Make sure the wav files are PCM-format.
Use Windows Sound Recorder (Programs, Accessories, Entertainment) to 'save as' this format. You can also alter bit-rates etc

i have just changed to an XDA IIs from my k750i and so far i have found londs of things the XDA wont do that the K750i could to..
like play mp3 files as ring tones for instance. i transfered them all across and the XDA wont find them as ringtones.
anyway around this apart from converting the files!?

They just need to be in the \Windows folder.
Edit: OK, just tried it. You could try converting to WMA format.

just copy your ring tones to windows/rings and you'll be able to see them in phone settings...
however, there is a registry hack to change rings path to Storage instead of RAM.. it works fine with me ( Magician )

could u please post the registry hack here...would love to have my sd card songs all as ringtones ......also is there a reg hack to play .mp3 as a ringtone instead of converting it to .wma and then play as a ringtone...its quite annoying to convert them first and etc etc.....

MP3 Ringtone Bitrate to battery power ratio.
I'm guessing from owning an iRiver iHP-140 Personal Media Player that the MP3s Bitrate will have a bearing on the battery power usage. Going on other Forums tests 128 kbps mono/stereo 44khz will be the best bitrates for battery consumption. look forward to reg hack as well, upgrading rom to PDA2K 140.0 iMate ROM for my o2 UK xda2s, wonder if this makes a difference, will report if it dose.

if you have wm10 you get mp3 as ring tones
and to get wm10 you need a rom which include it
wm2005 does
2003SE chinese version does

Well i got this file and installed it onto my xda iis and it works. It adds a set as ringtone option in the menu that shows when u hold ur stylus on the mp3.

Place your *.mp3 file to \storage card\My Documents. You can choose that *.mp3 file as ringtone. The more free space on your storage card, the more mp3 ringtones. Cheers.

But when you right click the mp3 and 'set as ringtone', it still gets copied to \windows\rings :?

Select it (*.mp3) the usual way, i.e., Start>Settings>Sounds & Notifications. There you will see the mp3 file you placed in \Storage Card\My Documents\. Also applicable for *.wmv files.

Correction: Applicable to *.wma files too.

Doesn't work on the XDA Exec

mp3 file as ringtone

I have tried this several times, even contacted orange, but am now getting conflicting information
The manual says mp3 files can be used as a ringtone
orange then advised me to move the files into the /rings folder
However, the device cannot recognise them
I've now been told by orange the device does not support mp3 files at all!
I then told them that I can play them in Windows Media Player and was told the device shouldn't be able...
Any ideas?

just move into any folder...and...tap on it.. it'll automatically install...

I have a file called bigbrother.mp3 in windows/rings folder, but this is not being recognised
If I move any other type of file (.mid .wav) into this folder, then I can set those as ringtone
I can also setup any other ringtones from the start/settings/system/add ring tones

Hi! I also had issues getting an MP3 to play as a ringtone... Not sure if it was due to the file size or the file type.
My work around was to use a tool to slice and dice the file to
1. Make the ringtone duration 20 seconds
2. Convert the file to WAV
3. Increase the gain so the ringtone is louder than original
There are tons of free applications to do this... I usually download todays' most popular from http://www.download.com ...

Try renaming bigbrother.mp3 to a smaller name i.e big.mp3
I had an MP3 that wouldn't display in the list until I renamed it to a smaller name, then it became available and worked succintly.

I was wondering of the file is too large, so uploaded a smaller one at 0.9MB, but this too was not recognised
The only conclusion I can come to is the orange SPV M2000 (QTEK 9090) does not support mp3 files as ring tones, only mid and wav
That still doesn't match the manual though (clearly states "use mp3 files as ring tones")

Update to latest rom (1.40.00 ?) That should fix it - I had the same problem - updated rom & voila

I've tried the latest orange ROM 1.40 and as really unstable and went back to ROM 1.31
I'll try again and see if there is any change

If you convert a MP3 file to Wav or WMA, then you would be able to set it as a ringtone (by right clicking it in your phone).
WMA is comparitively smaller than WAV, so I personally recommend WMA. I am converting files from ""Microsoft Digital Media Edition""Audio Converter" http://www.microsoft.com/windows/plus/dme/Music.asp#audio.

Just upgrade. This is an issue solved long ago. Newer ROMs are more stable, just get used to them

after you have your file in the phone, make sure you put it in mydocuments/my music folder on MAIN MEMORY, then go to file explorer and find it, hold down the stylus on the song mp3,wma,midi you want and there will be an option to set it as ringtone.

anyway now that this has been answered, i keep a 2gb minisd card full of mp3s on my phone and i need an app that will let me cut a small (30 - 60 sec) clip .mp3 and be able to send it via bluetooth, it doesnt have the option to beam built-in but it would be easier. does anyone know of such a program? (for the phone not for a PC)

I've updated the ROM to the latest version from orange
The ringtones are still in the correct folder
Also tried right click and set to ringtone
Still no change, none of the mp3 files are recognised
It does look as if it is a misprint then in the orange handbook
Note this is an orange SPV M2000

Found out why I had previously downgraded to an old orange ROM
The one (currently) on the orange website is faulty when used with the camera... and causes an internal error

Ya, it not work on M2000/O2.
I think ,this causes the system do no identify MP3 type(you can see the
files property).
Please change .mp3 type to WMa or WAV, then you can enjoy.

doesntwork on my xda 2... i got set it as a ring tone, click it , then nothing else happens :O/

This can be caused if a third party app takes control of the .mp3 extension. I installed a media player and it took .mp3 control away from WMP10. in order for your phone to use mp3 as ringtone it has to be associated with WMP. I had to use pocket tweak to re-associate mp3 to WMP. and this cleared my issue.

ooh, i think i have pocket tweak somewhere, makes me so irrate when other phones less complex can use mp3 ringtones with no fuss and bother. infact this phones annoying ime more and more , its so faddy!

SMS tones and WM6

I'd like to ask for your advice. I did do a search prior. Any way to use external SMS tones (mp3, wav, wma etc.) with WM6. I placed them in all different imaginable folders (windows/rings; windows; my documents) but they do not show up when i select "new text message" under start/settings/notifications.
I have my mp3 ringtones working great using the native contact ringtone function in WM6 (I placed the ringtones in the windows/rings folder)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Phonealarm (see its thread) can use other sound types for SMS, email, ringtones et cetera. Its almost ready for primetime.

I tried it once. It appears that you always have to let it run in the background (cannot x out of it for it to work) and it uses up a lot of resources, Has it been working well for you on WM6?

Currently I'm using an older version (4.03), this one works without any problems, tried it with Black and Dutty's.
Concerning resources: my version needs 1,4 MB memory but the newest should need less. If you need it only for sms and ringtones then its too much but I need it because of profiles and call filtering so its ok for me.

BTW, has anybody noticed weird behavior with MMS notification and WM6. I cannot get any notification functions (sound, vibrate) to work under "New MMS message", but all the functions work under "MMS downloaded" in "start/settings/notifications". So, the only way for me to get notified about a new MMS, is to have the alarm functions for "MMS downloaded" enabled which I guess works, but is weird.

Just wanted to post a CORRECTION to this post. Sound files can also be mp3 or wma format. They must be placed in the Windows folder of your device.
Make sure you set your computer to view all hidden files. Using acitvesync click the explore button and browse through your phones directory. Place the file in the Windows folder.
*To save space, and better quality, i would suggest doing mp3 or wma format. Sound files are only required to be .wav files if you are going to use it as an alarm. The alarm settings only accept wav files, while mp3s can be used for other notifications.

As for ringtones, you can save space by putting them in the ROOT/MAIN directroy of your storage card. By doing this, you can see your ringtone song in the dropdown list, and it stream off your card rather than wasting space on your phones main storage. Once again, i would suggest you make them mp3 or wma (no use wasting space doing wav files). You might also want to try Inesoft Address book. A great device that helps you group people to ringtones, set your general ringtone, and inidividual ringtones.

I got my sms tones in mp3. Just put your mp3 ringtones in My Documents under the storages.

I placed a wma sound file in the windows directory, but it does not show up in "start/settings/notifications/New text message - play sound directory"

Then you are probably not putting it in the windows directory. Make sure you computer is set to show all hidden files and folders(VERY IMPORTANT). Connect your phone via activesync and click explore.
Then click My Windows Mobile Device icon > Windows (folder)
Then drag the files there. Once the files are there you will see the files in the sound dropdown menu.

I finally converted my WMA file to a MP3 file, put it in the windows directory, and, voila, it is showing up in the drop-down menu. I don't think wma files are supported for SMS tones with the native notification settings.

I found a new free app (new for me at least) that allows your to set ringtones and sms tones for each contact or catagory. called mortring

made for wm5 but seems to work ok on 6

You can create a My Documents folder in SD card, and put every SMS and phone ringtones in this folder - no need to be put into the Windows directory. Then the phone will detect these files when you select different rings.
This also work for WM5 (but not work for SMS rings), for WM6, both work.

Agree with leochan2005.
However, does anyone of you have problem with dismissing the tone? I am using wma files and discovered that the tone kept on playing even after I have dismissed/replied/close the application.

You need to place the tones in your
DEVICE\Application Data\Sounds
folder
they will then show up as an option for a ringtone, or a notification sound
one problem is that, if you say read the SMS, the tone continues to play out, so i wouldnt recommend using a song or a like 15sec file, because it plays out the whole thing every time, unless someone knows of a workaround for this?
