does anybody have any experience of GPS for Limerick,Ireland??
gps
hi m8.....im using xda1, with a car kit and wired haicom gps. while it works fine, mapping software for ireland is ****. the best i found was mapopolis, which is a free download, and i figured out how to hack the maps, and also to enable voice prompts. so try it, and download the limerick map, if there is one. the dublin map is good, but once u leave the major cities, only main roads are mapped. i also use gpsdash.
I use mapopolis too, its crap in the country, great in the cities! I also use tomtom routeplanner. Its BRILLIANT in the country every little back road is there, even lanes with grass growing on the middle of the road!!, but the cities are **** and it does not do 'active navigation' for re-routing. All that it is is a scrolling map, but it does plan routes and shows it on the screen so you simply follow the road.
I have heard that Viamichelin have good 3D software for Ireland, but its €200!! with NO GPS reciever see:

Hope this helps

Trying to get an answer to this question, but nobody seems to know the answer so far.
I'll buy the Oribit if it can do the following:
a) be used whilst walking in e.g. central London to help me find my way to various full postcode locations/streets (i.e. held in hand, easy to read display)
b) ideally, also be able to be kept hidden in inside pocket, with verbal instructions coming via bluetooth headset.
I noticed in one forum that b) was ruled a problem, as apparently e.g. WM5 does not allow audio such as TomTom instructions to be sent to a bluetooth headset??
I think, that Bluetooth is not the problem... I think, it will work.
But: GPS with device in your Pocket won't work.
Cable-Headset works fine, Bluetooth Headset not (at least mine).
Running TomTom in your jacket or rucksack is no problem.
But using TomTom for walking is not very good - even when you switch it to the "Walking mode". If you walk slow, it doesn't really know what dircetion you are walking and the map is rotating very often.
hi
i Used TT in london last year device in pocket worked a treat don't know about stability of map as it was in my pocket most of the time and used a wired headset. just had to view map ocassionally to get an idea of the general direction i was heading.
Thanks people,
Varied answers! - maybe due to different models?
"even when you switch it to the "Walking mode". - oh well, good to hear it actually has a 'walking mode'
"bluetooth" - I believe someone mentioned some issue whereby (forgive me for vagueness) WM generated sounds could not be sent via Bluetooth (but obviously phone or music audio could). Yes, I was confused as well...
Yes - it has a walking mode. But that mode is for the way how TomTom calculates the route - e.g. pedestrian areas, oneway streets.
Another thing is - in large cities the device will find less satellites due to high houses around you. That's another point why it sometimes does't know what direction you are walking. That was my experience in Boston last year.
I use memory map 5 with the Orbit and I think that's exactly what you want. I have the full london A-Z and using the GPS can pin point my position. I also have ordinance survey maps for kent and sussex which are great for walks.
When you connect the orbit back to your PC, memory map will download your route to the PC and display it within the 'main' memory map software.
GPS Walking
I've bougth HTC Artemis recently and used it in the labirinth of Venice Italy. I thought I couldn't use it but I managed to use it.
Surprisingly it could find the position. I mean surprisingly if you know that the streets in Venice are 3 meters large, at best, and the surroundings houses never lower then 12-15 meters.
Yes, it's a problem for TomTom to find the direction where you're going but, if you ask to see the graphical demo of the calculated route, you can easily go where you want. You're looking at a freezed map showing the next connection, turnout or whatever. As soon as you've reached it you can press the skip of next button to see next istruction. More on this, while you look at the graphical demo of the route, you get the vocal messages.
Bye
thanks, all interesting especially memory map 5 by the sound of it!
Memory Map is great for walking but it will not give you spoken commands as to where you need to go, it is a topographical map (it looks the same as the paper map you would purchase from an outdoors/ camping style shop) but its in electronic format displayed on the PDA screen with current position displayed. You can set waypoints to offer a vector, distance and time to go to reach the destination - great out on the fells but limited in cities to be honest.
If you want spoken instructions TomTom or Route 66 work great on the Artemis, both can display the map in 2D mode which is easier to interpret when walking - Mike
Hi, Just recieved an XDA Orbit and i'm wondering which GPS software you think works best on the device. Now i know that most people think that TomTom is the best GPS software but i'm looking for something that works well on the orbit.
I need the GPS software to be able to support postcodes!
So the ones i can think of are:
TomTom 6
Co-poilot
Desinator
Any others? Whats do you think works best.
BTW: I'm in the UK if that makes any difference.
Tom Tom 5
I am using TTN5 and I find it excellent. I have used the TomTom range from the old Routeplanner days and the early versions were flawed, but TTN3 and 5 got their act together and maps were updated. TTN6 did not add any revolutionary functionality and TomTom didn't offer an upgrade price so I have stuck with TTN5 and a subscription to Pocket GPS World to get updated camera and POI downloads.
I use TomTom 6 and in my opinion, its the best out there. Co-Pilot is really good too, got that free with the phone - but just prefer the TTN6.
TT6 works well
Destinator PN also
Destinator 6.1.1 sucks on Orbit/MdaIIIc, losing GPS and freezes
other gps software not tested
I use Route66 on my Orbit. Drove 850 miles each way from Boston to Dayton, OH without a hitch. As a matter of fact, it saved me at one point when I was having car problems. Used it to find the nearest Hotel's in the area.
Hi,
I use both TOM TOM 6 and Memory Map, both of which work very well.
Regards
Last I checked iGuidance was incompatible.
I use TT6 works really well, my only problem is that maps are 95% uptodate, which is fine most of the time, but I find in London it doesn't know if a street is now one way, or its now a bus lane, or you cant turn left on Euston Road and have to go into congestion zone and then forget to pay and have to pay the £50 fine
Hello!
Reading such comments make me feel sad...oh lord!
Navigation programs are meant to support you on the road so you don't have to spread a roadmap across your steering wheel and being distracted from traffic, not to replace your eyes, ears and most of all your brain.
Could'nt resist had to say that.
...bye
I have TT 6.2 {7130} and IGO 2006. Works fine.

I use Destinator 6.1 with Iberia map (when I'm in the mainland, no Madeira maps yet ) and it works OK.
It captures GPS signal almost instantly and it's quite accurate regarding positioning.
Regards,
Have used TTN5 & TTN6 I prefer TTN5 as it is simple and quick to use. It would be perfect if the maps were spot on but close enough to keep me happy.
May have to use TTN6 when new London congestion charge comes in but its the one I would recommend.
i have been wondering about which software is better for Nav. and real GPS locations. ROute 66 (which by the site, they say Dash is not compadible) or CoPilot? is it worth buying the receiver they offer, or any others in particular? thanks!
The 2 free apps, Google mobile and Windows Live Search, both work well. Google is bit harder to make work because you need to mess with the registry to make the port available. But either one does a good job. WHat you wont get with these freebies is turn by turn spoken directions.
I use Live Search on my Dash with a Globalsat BT GPS receiver. Works great.

ok, cool.. thanks for the info.. what is the difference between the google maps just using your phone wi-fi and have a gps reciever? do you just get real time of a location?
what about using maps? i have route66 u.s.a maps but no software though! is there a way to load just the maps and use it with Live or Google?
i have the software but no maps!!! We need to trade
i dont even know how load the maps (if possible) without the software..
Hi,
Was just wondering if anyone had a recomendation for a good GPS porgram? I'm looking for good mapping rather than road directions. Google Maps Mobile is great, but not so good when I'm out of range from a cell tower...
Thanks for your help

GPS program
TomTom 6 with 6.75 map ( the best, for me)
Navigon 6 ( nice but slower with elf)
Route 66 gps (
Thanks for the sugestions giovanniriccio, but those are all road directions programs, and I don't drive (yet, sadly). Looking for something I can use when out walking / on my bike.
Cheers
How about OziExplorer?
http://www.oziexplorer.com/
Is that what you're looking for? You will need to supply your own (scanned or digital) maps, but if you have those (or find it in gps-forums): it worked great on my HTC Magician. Haven't installed it to my touch yet, though, so I can't promise it will work, and if you don't have the maps in the right format, it can be a bit of a pain in the ass to get it all right.

I myself use Navigon more so then TOM TOM (I have both installed) only because I like the interface a bit better... and waiting an additional 3 seconds to have the program load or another 3 for a route to load in comparision to Tom Tom isn't that big of a deal for me.
However, that said. TomTom 6 and Navigon both give you the option to choose your method of transport, So you can choose walking route or biking instead of driving a car.
Navigon has these options: Fast Car, Standard Car, Slow Car, Motorbike, Lorry, Bicycle, Pedestrian. Now as far as I know it doesnt have walking paths programmed into it it just uses these settings to give you an estimate on how long till you reach your destination.
Same for Tomtom however it's options are as follows; Fastest Routes, Shortest Routes, Walking Routes, and Bicycle routes. I've never used any of these features so now sure how they really work BUT they are there.
Like I was saying about the load up time between the two, depending on what type of Touch you have will likely make a difference because honestly I've barely noticed a difference as far as route loading times but that could be because I have the touch enhanced so it runs fairly fast.
Hope this helps!
Memory-Map
Memory map is brilliant for mountian biking and walking.
http://www.memory-map.com/
30 day trial available and good quality maps (UK, France) available or you can import. Runs on PC and PPC so you can dowload and analyse your routes
I'd second Memory Maps, it has worked brillantly for me on a number of WM devices including the touch. It can be a bit pricey for maps, but Memory maps navigator is free and can import and calibrate scanned maps.
Thank you
Lots of options to play with over the Christams holidays!
Cheers!

Hey Guys...
Heres a link to the Cube Icons thread I made. If you go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=351551&page=4
you'll find not only icons for the aplauncher for TomTom and Navigon but I also made some Icons for the mediahub panel of the cube as well.
Anyone know how to fix the "No maps found!" TomTom error? I'm currently using TomTom 6.203 (7220) with USA/Canada maps version 6.75 (1409). I have the maps folder in my microSD card.
No Maps Found
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, dos any body know how to fix, you cannot get into settings to look for maps, it just takes you to tomtom download page
Not sure if this will help but I had had the problem on my treo before and I just simply took the map off and brought it back onto the SD card.
I'm also not sure if the placement of the map has anything to do with it but I had originally had it in the TOMTOM folder. When I moved it to the root menu of the SD card it read the map fine.
Right now I'm running Tomtom 6.010 (7720) and my map is "USA and Canada 675_1409'
I found the solution in another thread from kunz:
Disable Bluetooth Explorer from Settings -> Connections -> Bluetooth -> Bluetooth FTP
It causes TomTom to think that the bluetooth folder is your storage card and tries to load map from there. Disabling it should do the trick.

This worked out instantly for me.
You guys may also want to try Navigon Navigator for your phone. I have the latest version 6.2 and it runs super smooth has a way nicer interface then tom tom and has voice control so you can actually just press a button on the phone and say "navigate home" and the program does the route and stuff for you. Its a great feature to use instead of flipping through your favorites or something like that.
I have both tomtom and Navigon on my touch. I use Navigon more however I have noticed that they both sometimes find different routes. On that occasion I noticed tomtoms routes are a little quicker (by say a few minutes... but that could simply be because it calculates the estimated time a bit different) Either way.. something to check out at least. Look up some information on the program and check out screen shots of it. You can tell right away the interface and maps themselves look alot nicer then tomtoms. Both seem to be about the same as far as up to date maps go.
Question!
OK Guys, please excuse my noob question, but as far as I know the Touch does not have GPS. Do you use external Bluetooth GPS devices or how do you use all these apps?

Yes, bluetooth gps. I use GlobalSat BT-359, and I'd like to buy one day "Freedom Keychain GPS SiRF III Receiver" or maybe the small Holux GPS Receiver.
As for software doing maps, there are plenty. I know of: googlemaps, gpstuner, gloposis and sometimes the necessary companion 'gpsgate'. Recently gpstuner got google maps support built in, but I haven't tried (previously one had to build maps oneself for gpstuner).
With a bluetooth gps would it work with garmin maps topo or road maps?
I use GlobalSat BT-359, with Windows Live, along with Microsoft Voice Command 6.1, you can actually tell it where you want to go. The mapping software works fine. The only occasional problem I have, and maybe someone has an answer for this, is it takes a while (5 minutes sometimes), to sync with the GPS "puck". Sometimes closing and reopening the app. several times helps it along. Once in a rare while it will lose the port, as well. I am using port 1. Does anyone have a solution to this? Otherwise, it works great when everything is sync'd.
thanks. Gary
Why not try the "Igo My way 2006 plus"
Igo My way 2006 plus works great with my Touch and it alerts me on approaching the speed cameras. You should try it out. The maps are much more detailed then on other Gps software i used. If you want to use it and you don't find a trial, plz pm me and i will help.
p.s. you have to own a Bt. Gps receiver.

That software looks pretty cool, but I don't see any mention of maps for US/Canada on their website... Do these exist, or is it just for European users?
Thanks....
Hi guys,
just got my new Rhodium, loving it, and so glad i found this site!
I know it has inbuilt gps, i am going to install tomtom, question, when using google maps, the gps seems to "charge me" ie data useage, is there any way around this? free gps etc? sorry bt im new to these wonderful phones
GoogleMaps loads the map you see via GPRS or 3G - so you have traffic and you will be charged for. TomTom or Navigon load the maps from your microSD-card - so ther is no GPRS/3G-traffic and no costs.
GPS will be always free ...
Touchpro with SportyPal
I just did a 1.4 km walk with both a TouchPro and a TouchPro2.
Sportypal is easy to use, so I could upload the exact trips for both phones.
One in my shirtpocket and the other in my TytnII belt.
On the map you can clearly see that the 2 has a much better GPS because it shows more exact the crossing of streets, corners etc.
Could it be because it is just bigger and thus have a larger antenna?

excellent, tomtom is going on tonight! cheers guys
TomTom for navigation,
Sportypal for running/cycling
Great combination
