Can GSM Network list be updated? - About xda-developers.com

Not an essential and there is definitely no hurry (I'd rather have you guys researching/developing than doing website management) but I did notice that there is no Nigerian GSM network listed.
OK, we're new and don't even have GPRS  yet but we're one of the fasrest growing mobile markets. We have four networks by the way: MTN, Econet (now Vodacom), M-Tel, and GloMobile).
If I can help (with icons or anything else) I'd be glad to.

Vodafone from the Hungarian operator list is missing too. And Westel's name changes to T-Mobile now.
Of course, it is not important thing, but a nice feature.

GSM Frequeny

I have a Orange SIM card which I got in Israel, I am now in Canada and that SIM works fine on my friends Nokia 6600, but when I try to use it with my XDA IIs I can't find any networks or anything. I am guessing its the GSM frequecy although the phone supports all of them. Does anyone have any idea what I need to do to get the SIM to work here? Does anyone know how to manually select a GSM frequency?
XDA IIs
ROM Version: 1.40.00 WWE
Radio Version: 1.15.00
Protocol Version: 1337.45
Hello psytech,
I believe you're roaming. Sometimes, you really cannot just plug your sim card then voila its working. If you are roaming, most of the time you really have to manually select the network.
anyway, i'm currently using windows mobile 2005, and no longer using windows mobile 2003 SE. i hope i could still help you or atleast you can see the pattern on how to do it.
here what you do:
1. click on the signal strength icon (the icon located on the upper right most portion of your screen just beside the speaker icon)
2. a dialogue box will appear with a clickable 'settings' button (located on lower left part of the dialogue box.), click the 'settings'
3. you will then see 3 tabs on the bottom part of the screen, 'phone', 'services', 'network'. click on 'network'.
4. you should find something like 'find network' button there, then just but before you click on it, choose 'manual' for network selection.
the rest is self explanatory, i hope i was able to help you. cheers!
You say your orange sim works fine on your friends nokia but does not work in your IIs.
Is it possible that your IIS device is sim locked as in will only work on the O2 network in the country you got it from.
If so unlock it via wiki (link in sig)
not it
I forgot to mention that the SIM worked fine in Isreal, my original SIM is orange (I do have an account with) I just can't get support cause I didn't buy the phone from them (capitalists).
About the network search. Thats what I've been doing for the last couple of days but I can not find ANY networks at all. which is what leads me to believe that its a GSM frequency problem.
What happens if you put your friends sim in your phone
GSM in Canada is generally 1900 http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_ca.shtml
doesn't work either
My friend's SIM doesn't work on my phone either. If canada is 1900, how can I make sure that my phone is currently using 1900. (I know it supports it, but how do I actually see that its actually scanning with it?)
What happens if you go to Settings->Phone->Network and then change Network Selection to Manual.
You should then get a list of networks. This will list all networks even if you cannot connect to them.
[edit] This has already be suggested earlier in the thread
If you do get some networks then the only reason that I can think of that you are not connecting is that under Prefered Networks you have a network selected that your carrier does not have a roaming agreement with.
Check your provider's website to see who they have agreements with.
no networks
My provider (Orange) has agreements with Rodgers, but my problem is that I am not listing ANY networks, I tried manual and even added the Rodgers network to my favorite networks, but when I try to search for networks I can't find any, I just get a blank window. This is very odd to me and I've never heard of anyone with that problem.
Like I've mentioned before, I updated my windows to TuMa 1.4 and my radio to 1.1.15. If there's anything else I need to do or anything I may not have done when I updated my network please tell me.
btw when I installed that TuMa windows I change my ID thingy to Tmobile.
Problem solved
Attenttion everyone:
It has come to my attention that there is a problem in the Band Selection CAB when it comes to certian cellular providers.
The problem so far appears on a Cellular One network that only supports 850Mhz. When the North American Option is choosen in the Band tab, the phone can not find a network to register on. I'm not quite sure why this happens yet, but there is a solution to fix.
http://relaysgoldens.com/sx66/ext_roms/BandSelect-fix.CAB
By installing this CAB, it provides a fourth option on the band tab, "Reset Value to Zero".
By selecting this option, the phone will be reset to it's default state, and will work normally.
I've trapped this as a bug in the 1.40.124 extrom and will be working to figure this out.
Note: the band selection setting is persistant, and will not be reset even if you downgrade the ROMs on the phone. If you are experiencing this problem, the ONLY way to reset the value is to use the CAB above.
-Chris
P.S. I've also updated the 1.40.124 RAR file on the website to include the updated bandselect CAB.

Calls possible with HSDPA Data Transfer?

Hi all
I experienced some problems since I upgraded to WM 6 (official Tytn Europe Version)
If there is a active Datatransfer in HSDPA Mode, i cannot make or receive a phone call. I already tried several Radio Versions (1.43/1.48/1.50), but no success. When I disable HSDPA, it works fine.
Does anybody has same issues with HSDPA?
Thanks
Marc
Vodafone issue
Hi - are you using a vodafone network? I know that there are issues on the network that are preventing some operators from supporting voice and data at teh same time over HSDPA....
The operators I know about are planning network upgrades or patches to solve the issues (which are not just limited to Windows Mobile devices apparently)
I can make calls -> versions below I don't think this is just a phone issue though. I think some operators can't do it.
I have the same problem as you have.
It is because of the infrastructure of my provider KPN that I have this problem. When I disable HSDPA then all works fine. So no I only use HSDPA when I want to browse on the Internet.
****ty but now I know why.........
Hi all
Thanks for the confirmation.
I also disabled HSDPA for now.
Now I will the push the guys in the network department to fix this issue......
Just got the answer from the tech guys. Operators with Ericsson UMTS/HSDPA Network Equipment are affected by this. The Operator has to rollout a software update to fix this issue.
Cheers
Marc
I am on AT&T and have never been able to do data and voice at hte same time.
I'm on At-T in Nyc and my HSDPA works just fine calls while on data and vice versa
I'm in South Florida and I'm constantly using Internet Sharing in HDSPA mode while talking on my Jawbone... (takes "jawbone of an ass" to a whole new level, ehehehe!)

OK, now THAT is the funniest thing I've read here! Thanks for the laugh!
I saw the jawbone at the ATT/Cingy store and wondered if I should splurge on it since I already have an H500 and an H700 from Motorola. My problem is I ride bike a lot and the wind noise makes it impossible to have a conversation with an H500. It is possible but a little difficult to talk while riding using the H700. I was wondering if you had any experience with the Jawbone under similar conditions?

George
OOPs - That was meant to be PM, sorry folks!
The Hermes is able to do both. Phone calls and data (HSDPA\GPRS\EDGE) at the same time. Your data speed does take a hit due to bandwith.
However if you cannot is because is 99.999% the network NOT the phone. I had a Hermes long before the network here in Canada supported HSDPA. So I could only do one at the time. At the beginning of this year they finally updated it and I have been doing both at the same time with wild abandon no problem.
Check with your provider.
@gmgonzal - the Jawbone will probably be the best you can find for your enviroment. I only use it in my Toyota when driving. People can't tell that I'm on a cell phone. I had a NxZen which I liked for a while but this is better, IMO.
@agovinoveritas - indded, that's the biggest reason I upgraded to the 8525... no more missed calls when I'm using the internet (or receiving an email at the same time..)
It's the network. All operators that use Ericsson 3G equipment suffer from a bug in the Ericsson kit that prevents simultaneous data/voice. All Nokia equipment works fine. T-Mobile in the NL use Nokia and have no issues. KPN and Vodafone NL use Ericsson and have this issue. KPN are currently upgrading their Ericsson equipment to correct this issue (ETA end 2007). I do not know about Vodafone NL. It is safe to assume that in other countries these providers use the same kit so you should be fine with TMO, regardless of where you are.
Does this issue include that my telephoneconversation can be disconnected?
I had this problem with the WWE WM5 HTC rom using the Vodafone NL network. Now I have uograded to the Dopod WM6 ANZ version it's all fine...

I can only acess Three network and pay roaming fees, roams on to telstra,

Anyone know how to solve this one?
For a jasjam I-mate with withdows 6,
Imate configurator is running, there is three coverage,
I installed the 'CWW Enterprises AUS Operator Con'
Which gives the point access name etc as far as I can tell.
I see the 3G pop up then is replaced by E.
I end up paying roaming fees. ????????????
Also trying to track down the remove telstra programs for dopod.

can you advise where you are roaming from?? also are you not able to disable other network? select telstra only as default? can't recall haven't really roamed since last year.
To get rid of the Telstra apps that are installed when you hard reset you need to soft reset before it automatically installs (this is the extended rom). If you wanted to change to a different cooked os then it wouldn't matter.
Absolutely LOATHE the telstra proxy. Makes life difficult.
Cheers...
had similar problems with a Telstra Imate on the 3 network. Upgraded to the 3 WM6 rom from

HTC HD2 Restricted connection to T-Mobile

I have an unlocked HD2 with an o2 sim. When I try to change GPRS connection settings I cannot select any network other than the original T-Mobile. The auto option is disabled. I'm not fussed about the T-Mobile splash screen but I do need to be able to connect to the o2 network (GRPS). Phone / text is fine. Any suggestions? I would like to avoid flashing the rom if poss. Roger
I have a HD2 locked to T-Mobile, all of the internet settings are obviously pre-configured for that network.
I'm not sure how to change them but I'm pretty certain you can get O2 to send you the GPRS the settings directly to the handset as long as they have the device or they may not support it.
T-Mobile
Unfortunately that isn't possible (HTC & o2 advised). Also there is no option on the connectivity wizard to update the list of telephone providers (that surprised HTC!). Presumably there is a regkey missing / overidden. Any ideas out there?
Rog
i got the same problem. theres no alternative to write a new rom to your hd2.
after that i could easily download the o2 settings...
theres a thread somewhere here to show you how its done
good luck.

[Q] Change preferred network order?

I have a slightly odd requirement, and I wondered if there was any way to fix it:
My carrier has a partnership with a second carrier so we can roam on each others networks for no extra cost.
Where I live, my own carrier only gives me a 2G signal, whereas the other gets 3G. Thing is, I have to physically select the other network. If it's on Automatic, it always "prefers" my own carrier.
This is fine until I'm on the other side of town where the other network gets no signal at all. I then have to manually select my own carrier again!
Is there any way to get it to prefer the other network, or even more ideally, prefer the one that offers the better signal at any given point?
Hi,
a bit of *bump* because I'm struggling with the same issue. I had such option on my previous samsung i780 (oooold) and it worked like a charm.
Currently my mobile operator has 2 roaming partners and if I want to change quickly the preferred order (because in some location it might have better coverage but only there and only for a while) I wold have to switch simcard to the old phone...
Isn't there at even a separate aplication to do that? Does andorid API allow such modification?
Glad I'm not the only one!
Interesting you mention an app to do it... i've not looked actually. If an app can access the list of networks and actually set the phone to use one, then I guess it would be possible. I'll check it out...
to the best of my understanding this is somewhat network option/setting and when suggesting an app I was thinging abount some way to read this setting, modify it and then save/send back to network. It would be a matter of access to the network settings from the API and knowledge how to operate it....
Still investigating this. Looks like the stuff to access the list of networks is in some internal APIs, so a little harder to access. I'll post back when I learn more...
Hey I hope you guys can figure this out have you tried the *#*#4636#*#* command and changed the radio? This will select the most preferred network.. e.g. I'm with Telstra in Australia, the stock radio defaults to 2100MHz but Telstra's HSPA+ is 850Mhz.. so I have to switch to AUS2 radio so it defaults to that every time.

@Simmo3D
It's not about the radio band but about the service provider itself.
