I'm looking at getting this carcomm cradle as my in car solution for my XDA2 : http://www.totalpda.co.uk/product4740_0.aspx
As i understand it, assuming I correctly wire the cradle kit to my headunit's telemute cable, when a call comes in, my stereo will be muted/paused and the cradle's speakers & mic will kick in. I gather TOMTOM instructions will work the same way.
I also have a Sony headunit with an Aux in. I'd like to use the stereo headset jack to play all that MP3 goodness into my stereo. This should reduce the amount i spend on CDR's
My question is whether having the headphone jack plugged in will stop the car kit from getting the phone call audio when a call comes in. Will the XDA try to take mic in from the headset jack or the car kit. Or will it end up dazed and confused, and slump in the footwell of my car nibbling it's toenails and rocking slowly backwards and forwards? Come to that, will I?

I have roughly the same setup you have, except the car cradle is only used for charging. I have all audio (TomTom, MP3 and phone) from the headset jack, including mic.
Works like a charm, you don't really need a carkit as you can feed all audio to the car stereo
I had a look at that carcomm set. It looks like the cradle blocks the headset jack of the XDA !
For mp3 audio and phone audio, I use a very cheap device called "car baby". This consists of a small clip on device with led and on/off switch. The device is rechargable and comes with lighter plug. Basically you just go to a blank preset on your in car radio, play audio on your xda 2, then tune radio to pick up the audio, the volume on the xda 2 needs to be pretty low to prevent distortion, once setup all audio is routed through the radio allowing very reasonable hands free phone calls and mp3 playback. It also comes with a nice little mount for a phone which has suction or vent mount adaptors, this isnt big enough for xda 2 but it looks very neat and will work with lots of normal size phones. I think it works on fm frequency around 106mhz.

@ pleun - I was planning on 'modifying' the cradle to either present me with access to the jack socket or to actually plug in a jack, but this would have to be fairly flexible as the jack is obviously at an unhelpful angle.
@cruisin-thru & pleun (again) - thanks for the ideas, My only concern is that I don't really want to have to switch the headunit to a FM channel or the Aux channel when a call comes in - too much distraction when driving. It would be fine if i was only going to be playing MP3's but i will want to continue to use the CD or radio from time to time!

I recently got a car and and want to use one of those cassettes with the cables coming out on it to exercise my grand plan of outputting the audio from my XDA II to the car stereo.
So what I need to do is have a cable that works along the lines of 2.5mm male to 3.5mm male / female.
I have tried modding a spair XDA II handsfree kit I had, removing the head phones and tieing a 3.5mm male jack to it (so that I could retain the mic and dialing abilities) however there was no audio sent down the line in tests.
Is it possible to buy something that meets these requiremnets? (although I would like to retain dialing ability). Or is there some sort of guide somewhere?

There is a very cheap and simple wireless rechargeable device called a Car Baby, this clips over the speaker and outputs all audio to a free fm channel on the radio, no cables to plug in, it also serves as a handsfree for the phone. Look on ebay and search car baby.

hi..i have an xda2, which sits in my modded xda car kit cradle, and there are is a jack plug [fem] with the kit which outputs all audio..i made a lead which plugs into my aux input, on my head unit, and bought a 1gig sd card, and loaded up my mp3,s...it rocks. on the subject of modding ur headset..that should work.....however, the wires are covered with a laquer...before u connect them...strip them and hold a match under them and burn off the laquer...it will work, i tried it first!

If you get one of these make sure your phone/pda is on low volume when tuning, then adjust until clarity is best, if you have too hig volume on phone/pda it will distort the audio.

buy an fm transmitter. it plugs into the headphone jack and transmits to a freq on your radio.
Some models of that year had it, but if it has a 3.5mm headphone jack, you can switch your radio to aux and then plug in to the evo and play that way. Or buy a cassette player adapter with the headphone jack and do the same thing, if you have a cassette player.
You can do what others have stated and or you can buy a bluetooth car stereo and sync your EVO to it.

Any of the ways the other guys said will work great, especially like teh roxx said, if your stereo has a 3.5mm input auxillary port. Thats the easiest. Here is a link to a product that i heard works well, but haven't tried it. I was planning on buying it for my company work van, but then I got laid off, (damnit!), so have no more work van! I am curious about this product though, it looks decent.

I used those tape cassette things from Griffin, they're good but they break/wear out easily.

I'm not going to help much - I have one of those cassette thingies. I have used it for many years now, and it has never broken or failed. I use it for about an hour every workday, and on long trips, some of over 9 hours.
Another way I found and used for a while (no idea where it is now) was an FM transmitter. You plug into a 3.5 mm socket, and it transmits on a selected FM signal. You then just tune your radio to that frequency. I found a bit of interference, so I went back to the cassette. That also does not require batteries or cable (except audio).
When I abandon my current 13-year-old Volvo, I may try and get a car with a BT music receptor for the stereo. More likely I'll settle for one with Aux in.
I have an Aux input and a USB input but Im playing music through the bluetooth link. Ive given my GPS away and just use my note now with the google nav.
I bought jabra cruiser (Bluetooth hands free with FM transmitter ) and I have it in my car .
Once I am in I switch it on and it pairs to my note and transmits through FM.
It is a very good and handy accessory for those who doesn't have aux in nor Bluetooth stereo systems.it even have music control buttons which work perfectly well with my note.battery life is amazing too (lasts around a week with an average of 1hour playback, it can auto switch off after a few moments of inactivity so ubwont have to worry shutting it down ecevrytime )
I can't recommend it enough bcos of its many other features...

Am aftermarket headunit is the way to go.....Pioneer's 2012 line-up allows you to stream music and Pandora via bluetooth......none of that fm modulated crap....horrible SQ

Pioneers only support pandora on ios devices. At least my unit does. You can ofcourse stream whatever you want via a2dp bluetooth connection. Regardless the app you use to reproduce audio.

Quick question to add to this, I am looking at getting a new car and chances are it will have aux-in, usb and bluetooth connections.
I know the aux-in will just plug straight into my Samsung dock, but what about the usb/bluetooth.
Will I be able to control the phone music from the stereo with these, or will the usb connection even work?
That Appradio2 looks smart, hope it comes to the UK.

Get a pioneer car stereo with aux-in. I just got their cheapest model with aux for about $70... Great sound, it has built-in 4x50watt mosfet amplifier and also line out if you want to upgrade using your own amplifier.

all new pioneer units can stream whatever music app from android as long as the device supports a2dp.
When you see the Pandora logo on pioneer devices however, it means that this pioneer device can control pandora (next, previous, radio selection etc) on iOS. that's all i meant.
Just don't expect the head unit to control your pandora app on android.

The answer is probably yes for the Bluetooth, probably no (in my limited experience) for the USB.
Bluetooth does remote control through the AVRCP profile which works with the Note. As long as your stereo does AVRCP right, the note should play along.
USB is hit and miss. Most of those systems either expect an ipod attached or a simple mass storage device.
I didn't want to play around with installing a new stereo as it was a but complicated in my car. Went with the Parrot MKI9100:

It's basically it's own separate amp rigged through existing setup. Sound quality is fairly good, it does have an output if you're using a power amp.
It's got full a2dp, syncs contacts to use it's own voice recognition which is much more accurate than built in Android. Voice quality is great to hear other person, not so great for other person to hear you. Big bonus is that it also has connectors for latest gen apple devices, USB, and 3.5 audio so pretty good options. Other bonus is it's well supported with firmware updates, had 2 since I've had it which have improved device compatibility and voice quality.
Installed it myself, was pretty easy once I'd looked at the wiring diagrams.
For the price though, I would probably have bought a high end double height new stereo as they have all this built in.... however, I'm a slave to impulse buys

Yeah i was a bit confused how it would recognise all the music in the 32gb of data on the phone over usb.
Probably won't bother me in the end, will normally have it in the dock to control it on long journeys anyway. As long as the music plays through usb I don't care.
If I plug it in USB how will the phone know to send the music via that rather than its own speakers like it would do with the aux-in??

If you play through Aux out:
Galaxy note reads a file on your SD (or internal memory) and the CPU feeds it to your audio chip that converts the digital file into analog voltages that go out your headphone jack and into your stereo. The quality is limited by the encoding of the file and the quality of the Note's audio chip.
If you play through A2DP:
Same as above but the CPU feeds the file to your bluetooth chip. The quality is limited by the bit rate and encoding of the A2dP protocol.
If you connect via USB to your stereo:
Your card (or internal memory) is read by the stereo, not the note. The stereo converts the file into audio output. Quality is limited by the file encoding and the quality of the stereo's sound chip (which is probably better than the note).

Ideally I would be able to stick a usb cable from the dock to the car and it would charge and play music, instead of me having the usb port taken up by the charger and having to use the aux-in port.

Probably will work and I am interested in your results. One minor issue is that your stereo probably will only supply a small charging current to the phone so it won't charge as fast.
You might have to put your phone in mass storage mode but maybe not. Let us know if it works.
My note does not play music via bluetooth. Car is opel insignia if it matters... Any ideas how to connect? Accept of course to turn the car is on .

I have been using a Jabra Cruiser2 with all of my cellular phones and highly recommend it. The sound quality over bluetooth+FM is, somehow, is better than what I get when I plug the phone into my vehicle's aux input.
i just tested a2dp in my MVH-8300BT pioneer and turns out that the new pioneer units do not support BT music streaming and require a bluetooth module (sold for ~150$). Aux cable for me
I'm looking to buy a new car stereo, and I'm basically treating it as an accessory for my Galaxy SIII. I'm open to any brands within a reasonable price range.
What's the best way to listen to the music that is on my Galaxy SIII right now, wirelessly without losing sound quality? I know that I can just use an audio input jack, but is there any other way? I heard that yo lose a lot of audio quality using bluetooh.

I use Bluetooth everyday, with no noticeable loss in sound quality. However, it is dependant on your stereo too. I have a cheap Jenson Double-Din Nav Unit.
Bluetooth is going to be your only wireless method that will not sound like total crap , but USB would be the best quality, but dont think you can do this like an ipod can. Not sure what is needed to make these phones work like that , charge and play music thru the USB direct to stereo is nice. Id like to ditch my ipod and just use my S3, but for now it just works better.
If you connect your S2 using UMS (using "SGS3 Easy UMS" app), you'll be able to listen to music on the S3 with the highest quality possible.
Not all bluetooth-enable car stereos allow for music playback. Mine, for example, only allows for voice calls and voice commands (such as S-Voice).

But does the easy UMS work on the AT&T S3?
Ive used Sony bluetooth stereos in my car for the past 3 years. Ive heard that some other manufacturers either dumb down the feature or make you buy a dongle, but the Sony comes ready to go, no extra dongle needed.
I bought the latest when my older model was stolen. Its the BT-3900u (120 on Amazon) and I honestly cant tell the difference between CD and streaming.
Pros: 3 preamps (front, rear, sub), decent equalizer, galaxy connects instantly w/ no hiccups, change face color, Bluetooth gain control
cons: radio reception is OK (could be my antenna), built in mic causes a lot of background noise for the other person (my car is pretty loud). But it does have an option to route your own wired mic.
I honestly stopped using CD's and the radio now that all my music syncs up instantly.
I would like to know what car stereos would work with the GS3 straight out of the box. I'm sure there are a few that would allow us to plug in via USB and be able to listen to our music while charging the phone.
Can anyone confirm any models that work like this?

Pioneer makes a nice head unit called the appradio that is double din, and has usb and bluetoooth, if you use the usb, and the pioneer app that goes with it, it basicly turns the double din screen into a second touchscreen display for your phone.

Bluetooth is the way to go, excellent quality and you cna amp it with awesome beats or DSP mgr and if you is power amp, then you can equalize it further
In addition, the automation with tasker is awesome ( Sync Bluetooth > Start Player > and then close app when no Bluetooth etc )
I have two decks a pioneer dvd2300 double din with the bluetooth add on its worked the best i can use bluetooth and change songs from the deck directly and even control pandora once installed. Before i use to have a kenwood single din it was hd942u worked through usb it was fast n automatically scanned for music which was awesome.

I bought a Dual from walmart for $90. I just like you didn't want to spend too much money. for the price, not bad at all. bluetooth streaming music and movies is pretty cool. no quality distortions at all. also has a front aux in and USB port.

i dont think you can connect it to the stereo via USB since the S3 has MTP and not USM unless you root it and use the app as stated a few posts ago. can anyone confirm this?

FM transmitter is one of the worst connection methods you can use. The sound quality is ALWAYS bad.
I absolutely hate aftermarket decks, I use my motorola bluetooth box on long trips, but there is definitely quality loss over the FM transmitter. I have an aux jack for short trips, I really wish I had an aux cord that had buttons like the headphones do, just so I wouldn't have to look at the phone to change songs or anything.
I have a Verizon GS3 and a Galaxy Tab 7.7 - both support apt-X which is the newer, higher quality bluetooth format. If you can find a head unit that supports apt-X (i don't know if any are out, yet), you'd be golden.
As of now, the only way to get apt-X streaming into your car would be to get an adapter like this: Samsung HS3000 and plug it into your auxiliary input of your stereo.
Another thing you can do (and this is actually my setup in my Mazda) is to get a head unit that supports iPod/iPhone audio AND controls w/ a dock connector. There are cheap bluetooth to 30-pin dock connectors (see dealextreme) that will let your bluetooth phone connect to any iPod dock and play the audio wirelessly, but the added advantage is if the head unit has iPod track navigation controls, it can pass those controls to the phone during playback through the bluetooth as well. This will let you control the tracks playing on the phone from the stereo -the double bonus is if your car has integrated steering controls for the head unit. When my phone/tablet is connected and playing audio this way, I can move next/previous tracks from my steering wheel. I'm hoping some manufacturer comes out with a 30-pin bluetooth dock adapter w/ apt-X as well.
Finally, if you choose to connect your phone directly to a aux in but also have it on your charger you're probably going to get a ground loop humming sound. Get one of these: PAC Ground Isolator for 3.5 jacks to get rid of that annoying hum.
