Is Audiovox Thera Pocket PC & Verizon Phone the same thi - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hi,
I just came across someone selling a Thera by Audiovox Pocket PC & Verizon Phone. Is this the same inside as the SX-56 etc? Front panel has 6 buttons for Call, Call-end, Calendar, Tasks, Home and one other I cannot read. Plus a single *joystick* button like the SX-56.
Can this be unlocked & upgraded just the same?
Pic attached.
Thanks in advance!

I have a Thera too. I want to know if it can be unlocked from Verizon.

From what I know, there have been some people that were able to "unlock" the Kyocera 6035 to use with Sprint, cause of course Sprint sold the phone as well. I am going to guess that you could in theory unlock or reprogram the Audiovox Thera to use on Sprint. You probably would have to get a rom file of the Sprint Toshiba 2032. Thats about the only thing I can think. I would imagine though you probably would only be able to use the phone function. Sprint and Verizon do have "unlockable" phones like a GSM carrier does. Someone else could explain it better. Hope that helps

The Thera is quite different from the XDA/SX56/PPCPE. In fact, it doesn't even run PPC Phone edition. Rather, it runs PPC2002 with some third party extensions to power the phone.
Interestingly, there is a NEW Thera supposedly coming out that will be manufactured by none other than HTC.
Ostensibly, this phone will look just like the wallaby, but will have a 16 bit color screen instead of 4-bit (which is my only major gripe with my wallaby). Plus, it will have more RAM and SDIO.

This is just what I have been waiting for, so when I say your reply I started my search. Below is one link I found so far (it looks just like the XDA).

XDA II for in-car SatNav?

Can anybody recommend what I would need in order to use my XDA-II as a satellite navigation system for my car? I believe I would need a GPS receiver, but unsure of which are the better options. I would be hoping to do this for under £100 if possible. Can anybody recommend anything or give me a link to some reviews?
Thanks,
Allan
PLEASE do a search around this forum before asking such a question.
YES we're ere to help each other
BUT
YES there is load of info allready available.
I have had a search through the forum but all the relevant posts are over 6 months old, and there are no indication of price.
Does anybody have any advice?
Thanks
Allan
I dont think last months discusions on carkits are > 6 months old.
The pricing info is still valid.
Carkits were introduced between may and july this year.
Good carkits are from Expansys (iMate / XDAII carkit), T-Mobile (MDA II carkit), Qtek (Qtek2020 carkit), Yeti.
All have specific (dis)advantages.
Decent cradle is from Carcomm and maybe Seidio.
If i say more, I can just as weel copy the other threads in.

I'm new to this too, so I researched the subject as well as I could and this is what I've found since I unwrapped my 'surprise' (!) GPS package at Christmas...
First of all, the package itself. I (sorry, Santa) went for a PDAMods bundle (sixth one down on http://www.pdamods.com/products.asp?cat=104) of Rikaline X7 Bluetooth GPS, TomTom 3 and the Silver Shield powered mount with built-in speaker. Let's look at these one at a time.
Rikaline X7 I was attracted to this model by its replaceable battery, long battery life and no on/off switch. I upgraded my O2 XdaII to the 1.72 ROM from the O2 website before trying to bond it (so cannot comment on different brands or earlier ROMs), but when I did so it bonded immediately. You simply hold a button down for 5 seconds + to activate Bluetooth discoverable mode, pair with the XdaII in the normal manner and that's it. I also use a Jabra BT250 headset in the car, and have tested it with an incoming call whilst in TomTom nav mode - whilst admittedly I don't yet know whether the voice prompts still work during a call (because I was on a straight when the call came in), all that was necessary after hanging up was to close the phone app and there was the map again, bang on as usual. Accuracy is - well, phenomenal, I would guess within 5 metres most of the time, and I see little or no lag, except (slightly) on the heading in turns at junctions. All that is necessary to activate the Rikaline is to start TomTom on the XdaII; likewise, it reverts to 'sleep' mode when you exit TomTom at the end of the journey. There is really no need to turn off Bluetooth on the XdaII, so no chance of you missing calls on your headset because you forgot to turn it back on later.
TomTom 3 My software is v.3.03. I have downloaded the upgrade to v 3.07 to my home PC, but I have not yet installed it on the XdaII because I haven't yet encountered any problems - call it 'on-condition maintenance', or 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. There are some new roads in my area that are not shown, and some of the TomTom-provided POIs are slightly misplaced - although if you were really in the middle of nowhere and looking to fill up a petrol can I can't see you going too far wrong! Personally I find the 3D map presentation very useful - tried the 2D version today and didn't find it anywhere near as intuitive.
Silver Shield Mount The XdaII really needs to be powered whilst you nav. Obviously, the Rikaline looks after itself (I'm already convinced that only on really long runs or stints away from home would the in-car charging lead need to be taken along), but you'll flatten the battery on the XdaII much earlier then your GPS dies if you set it to keep the screen backlight on all the time on the internal battery. The Silver Shield mount also includes a built-in speaker, but as you will know from your searches on these fora the XdaII can only pump out phone audio through the bottom connector - so this enhanced audio facility requires a silly little coiled lead to be connected from the XdaII's headphone socket (bottom right) to the appropriate socket on the mount (top left). I have found that the right-angled jack plug on the provided lead prevents a snug fit on the mount and can cause an intermittent connection which can lose you your backlighting/charging at critical moments. For the mean time, I have stopped using the external speaker, and have found the volume on the XdaII speaker to be adequate for speeds up to 60mph; I will be trying motorway speeds tomorrow on a long run (Oxford - Kent). I think that the problem might well be solved anyway by shaving the offending corner off the moulded jack plug.
All in all, I'm very impressed and enjoying using my new system. I recommend it.
Cheers

I would suggest going to www.ebay.co.uk and search either xda or navigation. There are many low priced systems on offer.
Silly little coiled lead
Hi all
Did Oxfordshire - Bluewater and back yesterday, including a full circuit of the M25, and found the Xda II's built-in speaker quite adequate in my convertible (roof up). Have now decided that I don't really need the silly little coiled lead, although I'm still going to trim the corner off for use in the summer when the roof is down.
Still b****y impressed.

I have gps working on my Jam. If you need further help please E mail me.
Feel free to ask what you like if you can't find what you want in SEARCH, I don't mind helping out!!!
I'm loving destinator 3 on the xda II never crashes and has been updated some 50 times since it had an algorithm problem,
you can take calls and flick back to another screen with no problem. I got the Destinator whole of europe a XDA2 power supply / serial GPS 256MB Ram all for 160 + VAT and very happy since I got badly lost just before it arrived.
have fun
Hi, i have a question for y'all that have GPS working on your xdaII. I have a Bluetooth GPS receiver that does not "communicate" the position to my Qtek 2020 (it seems like it does not find any satellite)! Could it be because of the software i use (Mapsonic)? The receiver uses the NMEA standard 2.2, while the software requires a receiver that requires 2.0 (it's more advanced the one of the receiver...so why should i have problems...?)! Do you think i should find another software? Which one? My receiver is this:

In case anybody has this receiver, plesae tell me what software you are using.
thanks in advance

wish list

Looking at the HTC universal, I can only imagine that the designers either have VERY big hands, or have never had access to a mobile phone less than 15 years old.
I am currently struggling to keep my sense of humour with my Blue Angel (QTEK9090) which is the only device with the functionality that I need, but which sadly lacks the reliability. And as for the size of the damn thing... come back the IPAQ 4150
However, nothing out there seems to be able to offer the range of features needed.
The following is a simple wishlist for a new phone. I would be very interested to hear your comments, on workarounds or other recommendations.
Must have:
quad band phone
GPRS
3-G
>2mp camera
Bluetooth
WiFi
voice memo
640x320 resolution
>3 day battery life (hot swappable)
FM radio built in
standard issue stero output jack (who the hell has wired headphones these days?)
slimline form factor.
Would be nice:
built in GPS
buily in optical/laser full size keyboard (plus stand, I suppose)
What's the point of:
IR
Built in thumb-keyboards
phone the size of a brick
phone mic that can't pick up what you say...
a calendar that doesn't tell you what you are doing from day to day...
OS that monstrously and catastrophically and REGULARLY fails.
True, would be nice to have it all
But I guess its a marketing strategy thing wherein we cant have everything in one reliable device.
What about a weather proof phone, less weight and a flashligt on the camera?
Oh and also a phone which won;t fall out...

lol, you dont want much then???
ok, gps, would be nice, but if that was added, im sure the size of the device might increase, also fm radio, yes thats a good idea, if you can have it on a ****ty nokia mobile, then i would have thought this be as standard on an advanced pda, but rather than fm radio, better it be digital..... apart from that the new universal has most of the things listed above by yourself....
and how big do you want a keyboard???, the one on the blueangel is a bit tricky when fast typing, but the one on the universal seems more than needed....... the fone the size of a brick comment, its not a fone, its a pda with a fone built in, if you want a small pda, then the universal and the magician is a fone for you!!!
and the newer devices to be released, as far as i know, will all come equipped with windows mobile 2005, which from what ive heard, is the better version from microsoft to date, tho having not tested cannot comment on the stablility, but im sure these newer faster more powerful devices will come with a more stable version on wm2005.
on the other hand, id like to see devices to come with a 1gb sd card as standard, 5mega-pixel camera, with built in flash, and ditch the IR and create bluetooth builds that not only fix problems, but speed the bluetooth transfer rate up some more as i find, if your sending mp3's and large files, it drains the battery!!!!hell, why not stick some kind of solar panel on the top and it can charge in the daylight when you dont use it, lol,
peace.... 8)

Rapoo E6500 bluetooth keyboard for Android

Review: Rapoo E6500 bluetooth keyboard (written in Polaris Office w/E6500)
Ordered the Rapoo E6500 from eBay (seller name by request)(am not affiliated with the seller). Shipment tracking showed 2 days from Shenzen to San Francisco, then 4 more days to the Los Angeles area. Total cost was ~$50USD
Packaging was great, envelope was a watertight bubblewrap coccoon inside of which was another plastic bag around the boxed keyboard.
Pictures:
Bubble wrap: db.tt/10NloTOJ
Bag: db.tt/PDYz82QF
Box: db.tt/2ZFGBvD2
Keyboard: db.tt/NntCV3vS
Inside the box: the keyboard, a USB mini B cable and a manual.
The keyboard had just enough charge to pair - easy process although initially I missed that ENTER is required after the pairing code. I blame old eyes.
This version of the Rapoo is designed for Android in that the top row of keys (which double as Function keys) are hard-wired to: Home, Back, Search, Web, email, Rewind, Play/Pause, Fast Forward, Mute, Decrease Volume, Increase Volume, and finally, Lock.
At the bottom near the space bar is a Menu key which brings up the application menu.
I haven't figured out what the actual Function keys do or how to program them. In addition to F1-F12 there are FnPgUp, FnPgDn, Fn-Home, and FnEnd, all of which are handy to have.
Key action is good, F and J are embossed so touch typists can find them. Not being one of those I find myself adapting pretty well to the smaller layout but accuracy is not yet what I want.
Some quirks:
Del is right above Backspace but I don't find myself missing either often. Certainly hitting backspace a fair amount right now!
There is a Windows key; doesn't seem to do anything here.
The apostrophe and bracket keys are at the bottom right - I have to look to find them.
The unit is a sturdy steel tray with the logic board and battery bonded to the bottom back, giving it a wedge shape. The bottom front edge has little rubber feet. It has a power switch on the bottom and a physical connect button. So far it has auto-connected for me and so I haven't needed the connect button.
Best Feature: Build quality
Worst: CAPS LOCK - same gripe with every keyboard. Don't want it at all, especially doesn't need to be one of the biggest keys.
Will update with battery life information as it's learned.
Thanks for your review.
I almost purchased the E6300 for my Note (E6300 is the Apple iOS version), and luckily I found your review.
My only concern with the keyboard is that is it too small?
The last keyboard I had for a portable was a Sony PEGA-KB100 for Clie. It was about 240mm wide when open. I felt it was an excellent design with scissor key action and the key to key pitch was just right for my hands.
Could you measure the letter key sizes, and the approximate pitch from key to key?
Do you know if the key switch actions are scissors design?
Keith
Which version of Android are you using it with?
I have purchased the E6300 to use with my Nexus 7 (Android 4.1.2 stock) but I have to re-pair it every time i want to use it.
If I turn it off and then a bit later on again it connects just fine, but no key on the keyboard works.
I have this same problem on my Nexus 7 and my Droid 4 running 4.0.x
I have read reports from other people saying the keyboard used to work with Android 2.3 but having the same problem after upgrading to 4.x.
If you can confirm this keyboard works with android 4.x I will get mine exchanged.
I have also Nexus 7 and E6300. Disconnect problems drive me nut!!! Should I exchange it to E6500? I just want to be sure that E6500 has no problem...
Regards.

I got myself an E6500 and it works like a charm.
The keys tend to 'stick' if I have bluetooth mouse paired at the same time (e.g. pressing 's' results in 'ssssssssssssssssssss'), but this is more related to the Nexus 7 as it gets better or worse when switching between different kernels.
Ok many thanks. I have sold my E6300 and bought an E6500 from ebay
(I'm using lingo wireless usb mouse. I have heard problems about two bluetooth devices...)

Velocity Tablet NIGHTMARE!!!

Look here's the situation, I work for a company that released their own tablet and to be frank, IT NEEDS SOME SERIOUS WORK. I honestly think the developers are either novices or have very little experience in their fields. There are all kinds of compatibility issues. I've been using this site for a couple years now. I LOVE what you guys were able to help me do with my galaxies. If I can convince the company to send out a test tablet, would anyone be willing to take on this challenge? I really enjoyed the Fasty roms so if I had any type of preference I would shoot for that type of speed & stability. The current specs are as follows:
