Hi everyone,
just wanted to make a poll as to see which radio version people are using for their hermes. There are so many different versions, each has its own strength and weaknesses (i.e. reception, battery consumption, call quality, stability, etc) and its all different as to each of us' location, so I guess i made this poll to see which one people seems to pick the most and maybe it means something for some of us
For me 1.54.07.00 is the best. I had some toruble with data connection with 1.54.30.10.

Yeah it seems like 1.54.07 was pretty good for me as well; tho that the battery life is dramatically lower compared to when i used 1.47.x series (on pandora, schaps, official)
I dont have any data plans; but I do use 3d dialer occasionally, as well as wifidipping and bluetooth for files, keyboard and headset( lol yes, i am using a hermes but i also use a bluetooth keyboard -_-)
1.47.......
This thread could be extended to include the following
Country/Locale
Service Provider
OS/Build/Cook
Radio Version.
for me 1.47.00.10
UK, BT (using VF Backbone) better battery lifetime than the later ones.
Indeed.
I was actually thinking of starting a thread like this. I'm glad you thopught of it, kazuni.
I agree with tonyb, more information is needed, but I don't know exactly how to organize it. I am convinced that the issues are related to:
- Radio version
- How the radio is driven (ROM)
- probably Microsoft's EAS implementation
- how all the above react to low signal strength
At the risk of repetition I'll post some of what I have learned.
My interest in all this began when I got a Sprint 6700 a couple of years ago and was astounded at the terrible battery life, about 10 hours to full discharge. Here's my typical configuration (now on an 8525):
Service provider is AT&T
WI-FI and Bluetooth turned off.
Exchange Active Sync (EAS) is always running
POP3 mail only when requested (rarely, maybe every other day, 5 messages)
Phone is almost never used
Internet access used less than 30 minutes per day
Reading books, maybe 30 minutes per day.
In my office, about 9 hours per day, I have a very weak signal, 1 bar or less.
Elsewhere, 3-4 bars of signal is about average.
I learned from analyzing logs and with some help from Sprint and Microsoft tech reps that EAS seems to be the culprit in battery life. It works like this:
- The server and the pocket PC establish a persistent connection with a defined time to live (TTL) of several hours.
- While the persistent connection is running, they "ping" each other regularly, and in the process notify each other if there is any data to be transferred.
- This persistent connection uses very little power.
- If the "ping" fails, the connection is dropped, and the PPC tries to re-establish a new connection. If it can't (poor signal) it tries again in 3 minutes.
- if the PPC still can't get a connection it tries again in 5,7,12,and 15 minutes, then every 15 minutes until it succeeds.
- This process of trying to re-establish the persistent connection uses a LOT of power!
In the case of my PPC6700, the problem I was having was that the persistent connection was never re-established, even when moving into a 4-bar signal. I had to soft-reset the device to get the connection re-established. This has not happened with the 8525, but occasionally I have had to tell EAS to sync manually if it has lost its connection.
I've used vp3G and Schap's ROMs with radio versions 1.40, 1.48, and 1.54.07. Currently I'm running vp3G 3.62.3 with radio 1.54.07.
I understand that 1.48 and 1.54.07 radios are "good with AT&T". Certainly, and I don't know if this is real or just a fault in the bar-graph program, but I am getting 2 bars in my office with this radio, while I had 1 bar with the others.
I'd be interested to hear some ideas from the ROM and Radio experts.
I'd also like to learn how to interpret the results from the Firld Test program. There seems to ba a lot of info about he cellular signal there.
Walt
Been rock solid with the 1.54.07.00 and battery life is a full day also..
Country/Locale > Toccoa, GA USA
Service Provider > ATT
OS/Build/Cook > vp3g latest
Radio Version > 1.54.07.00
All this was done to my phone the day I got it. But set this way my 8525 gets great battery life as after 24 hours it is only on 70% (normal use).
Currently 1.54.30.10 - good battery life. No noticable reduction in signal strength / connection issues with any radio I've tried - I typically get the latest one available as they are posted.
Might be because I'm near Seattle and there's a tower every 50 friggin feet, so my phone doesn't have to crank up the power to acquire / keep a connection to the tower.
1.54.30.10... I like the speed at which this one finds the signal.
Hi there,
is there any possibility to remove this notofication when having no radio coverage (as in my underground garage)...
I'm a bit fed up with it, always switching it away...
thx and br
is there no solution?

is there nobody who has an idea how to disable the "no connection possible" notification?

You will need to supply information as to which ROM you are using.
On my stock Tmobile US ROM, I don't get this notification.
I use the latest HTC ROM (6.5) with Sense 2.5 but I had this notification on every ROM I had installed (6.1 and the 6.5 from November)
to explain it once more. when I go in my underground garage (where I have no radio coverage) and I stay there for 2 minutes, then the notification comes which says: "no connection possible".
I would like to disable this, but in Software there is no possibility.

This sounds more like you phone is trying to make a data connection, rather than a phone connection. I do get this alert when there is no phone service available - but only if I try and go online for some reason. Are you using some applications that automatically connect to the Internet?
yes, the weatherapplication, active sync, etc.
and I think you are right, regarding the data connection. is there any possibility to switch off this data connection notification?
thx and regards
*push*
does anyone have an idea?
Youre probably going to have to edit your registry if you want to keep your weather, etc running and disable the notification. Justt google "windows mobile registry editor" and im sure youll find it. After installing it comes the fun part. You get to search your registry for the value that controlls that notification, it will have a name indicating the function, something like "DataConnectionNotification" or something similar, and its value will be 1. You will want to change it to 0. Findinf it will be the tough part, theres a ton of folders in the phones registry, and some of the names of the values can be kinda cryptic. But you should be able to find it with a little time and common sense. I would start my search in HKCU/Software/HTC/builtin/ril (might not be exact path) and if its not in there, expand your search. Maybe someone will be kind and post exactly where it is in your registry, I cant search rt now Im on my phone
Thx for the advice
the only thing I found was on:
HKCU/Software/HTC/ConnectionSetup
there I changed the value "Enable Autonotify" from 1 to 0
but it seems not to be the right one since the notification is not gone...
it would be nice if somebody could help me finding the right registry entry?
I've been reading myself silly trying to figure this out & my attempts at Searching haven't helped, probably because I'm not fluent enough to use the correct terms. In spite of having this device for several months, I've never learned as much as I'd like. Anyway . . .
I finally flashed the newest stock ROM from HTC several days ago. The process seemed to go fine with one exception: I keep getting a notification that I have a new Voicemail when I don't. I check -- no new Voicemail. I Dismiss, but the the notification keeps coming back periodically. Suggestions?
Other than that, things seemed to go smoothly, and I started slowly getting things back the way I like them. After reading & making sure I understood (or so I thought), I installed the .NET 3.5 Framework so I could use Crud Scraper to get rid of the stuff I clearly remembered using it for.
The .NET part went fine, and then I did the soft reset . . . and lost My Location on the Today screen that shows my weather. It now says I'm in Seattle, which I'm not -- I'm over a mountain range & about 350 miles east of Seattle. When I try to change the location, it doesn't find my town or anything in my area, for that matter..
The mysteriously (to me) reappearing Voicemail Notification is bad enough, but I really rely on the weather, particularly this time of year, and it's driving me crazy that I can't figure this out. Suggestions?
TIA
Did you try looking at the several threads on this ROM in the Rom Development forum? There's a fix in one of them for this problem.
For which problem? And, do you have any idea what thread?
And, yes, I did look in the thread I found (New ATT Tilt2 ROM) -- I believe I read every post before I flashed the latest ROM, even though much of it was over my head. That's where I learned that I had to install .NET 3.5 & reboot before CrudScraper would work.
I recall several people mentioning that the My Location worked flawlessly & how great it was having the location, and I read where one or two people seemed to be having the same weather problem I'm having, but I didn't see an answer. I read in one of the forums that there seems to be a bug (although not confined to the latest ROM) in certain parts of the world, and I read a thread where there seemed to by a problem with My Location in a cooked ROM that might or might not have been related to GPS not working. I read something else where My Location wouldn't work with 3G, only with Wi-Fi, so I tried that, even though My Location was working just fine after I flashed to the latest ROM -- that didn't help.
So, it's not like I'm asking because I hadn't already tried to find solutions myself. I'm not doubting that there are answers to both of my issues but rather that after spending several hours over the weekend trying to find the solutions, I've been miserably unsuccessful. Otherwise, I wouldn't have asked.

For the My Location feature, only part of the service is understood. For the most part, the location is determined by the cell towers your device connects to. It depends on where you are as well as the signal strength. Sometimes the request is not sent or received to/from the tower(s). It is more accurate usually when 3G is turned off. The alternative is to add your city manually. If the location servers can't figure out where you are, then it won't work.
Normally the stock ROMs fix this and work wonderfully after flashing. The best solution to this is to turn off 3G to get a fix or find your city manually.

I'm feeling really stupid here, but being a glutton for punishment, I'll keep trying.
Is it possible that maybe there was something wrong with the towers here that just happened to coincide with the soft reboot after installing .NET? The reason I ask is that My Location is now correct. Yay! That would be just my luck: bad timing.
Any suggestions about the incorrect Voice Mail notification? It for sure comes back each time I power up the phone. It seems to me it also reappears at other times, but I'm not positive about that -- I'm going to try to pay better attention.

Make sure to install .NET CF 3.5 to the device and not the storage card. You'll then need to restart, if it doesn't ask you to do so. You then need to force it to use 3.5 over 2.0. Use a registry editor and navigate to HKLM/Software/Microsoft/.NETCompactFramework. Change the DWORD data of entry 2.0.7045.00 from 1 to 0. Then change the DWORD data of entry 3.5.7283.00 from 0 to 1 and then reset. This disables 2.0 and enables 3.5.
For a decent registry editor that can be used from the PC side, check out CERegEditor if you don't already have an editor of choice.
For the voicemail problem, there are two known solutions. You can either have someone call and leave you a voicemail. You would then check it and delete it. You can also simply call your provider and have them reset your voicemail account. Either one should work.
If neither of those options works for/appeals to you, you can give this a shot. There are no guarantees that it won't come back after a soft reset, though. Using a Registry editor, navigate to the following keys:
HKCU\System\State\Messages\vmail\Line1\Unread
HKCU\System\State\Messages\vmail\Line2\Unread
HKCU\System\State\Messages\vmail\Total\Unread
There should be a value name "Count" with a REG_DWORD value
Change value to 0 in decimal or 00 in Hex.
It should remove voicemail notification icon from the taskbar.

Many thanks! For the Voicemail, I used method one, and it worked
And, thanks for the instructions (and the reg edit program suggestion) to force use of .NET CF 3.5 because I missed that part -- yikes.
I'm on a dedicated mission to cut down on the elecronics I have to carry around, so I need to learn more about the features of the Tilt2 because if I can just figure things out (which I've not forced myself to do), the Tilt2 will, I think, be able to replace my PDA & iPhone.
Anyway, thanks again for your help!

Install RegistryEditor v 1.2.0.0 from TouchExperience website and follow first post.(I'm using HD7 sorry)Hope it works for you.
Hey man, *PLEASE* don't post the same question in many different threads. You've been here long enough to know better than that...
As for the answer, well, you run a registry editor app, you navigate to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings (watch for forum-added spaces in the string; the only space should be between "Internet" and "Settings"), tap on the named registry values, and set them...
If the ROM you are using is configured to automaticlaly revert them to some other value, for whatever reason, you need to modify or replace the ROM. There are only a few registry values I've found that have checks like that, though.
For the curious, the default values on my stock HD7 are 6 for both items.
thanks worked
EDIT: dont work.. still shows a "H" in my screen!
and yes I did a reboot but it dont work..
That... I can't help you with. I see no particular reason to believe that the registry values in question actually control which cellular technology is used by the phone. In fact, that seems a bit unlikely. I've been wrong about unlikely registry values before though...
In any case, I'm pretty sure it is possible (maybe using Field Test?) to lock out certain wireless technologies, but I haven't done any research on it. The only way I know is the basic option under Settings -> Cellular, and that disables all 3.xG tech.
u need the custom rom intrinsic, other roms may not work
i have been using this tweak for many hours now. my phone does not go to H signal during web surfing.even after soft reset, reboot. So it is working on mine
before this, phone will go to H signal meaning its using HSPA when doing things like surfing, email sync ect.. and will only stay on 3G during rest

well those are the phone options , they only disable data

registry -> data speed, i tried deleting the HSPA file.
doesnt work the H signal is still there.. so i guess this doesnt work
i went to www.mobilespeedtest.com. and did a test on the largest file . So far its only showing speeds which are under the 3G specs

i see something called registrypersist in the intrinsic rom. maybe thats why it works
hmm i got a trophy with a full unlock.
but btw, ill leave it on 32 and 16 to see if my 3g iddle mode stays at 3G instead of H
i am not sure why or how this works
but my theory is this , imagine
3G - uses xxx power at a certain speed
hspa - uses higher xxx power for faster speed
u have 6 pipes , u need to pull 20 stuff into these pipes, 6 at a time to destination (phone)
in order to do all of it in a given time, u need to pull the 20 stuff at a higher speed (hspa) which uses more power but faster to get to the destination ( phone). the phone recognises this and automatically goes into HSPA mode ( high power but faster operation)
so to solve the problem u open another 14 more pipes, that is ( 6+14-20 pipes) but get the 20 stuff with the power requirement of 3G all at the same time but at the same speed, u get all the 20 stuff at the given xx time by opening up more pipes parallel to the original 6 u already have
this is why maybe the phone stays on 3G because it has more pipes
So if anything, it changes the amount of power used by HSPA, not the actual technology used.
From my understanding, those registry values are similar to the ones within Windows which control max connections to servers.. By changing it to a lower value you're in reality only limiting your speed.
And am I the only person who thinks Magpir posts nothing but garbage?

it should automatically default to 3G when idle even without the tweak
what this tweak does is limit it to 3G under all circumstances.

amount of power means lower power = battery life savings.
By such a small margin. Think what you will.

Hi, I've noticed that after 1.1. 2013, the time on my Touch Pro 2 keeps getting messed up. For example, it's 12:27. On my phone, it's 14:27. Every time I adjust the time manually, it updates back to wrong time within an our or less. I tried changing my GMT (the correct one is GMT+1, but it changes too plus it changes time of my appointments.
I am not the only one with this problem, my friend keeps getting three hours forward instead of two like I do.
Any solutions to this problem, please?

I've heard some GSM provider's flat-out don't do this... So if the OP is in a small country or something with a small GSM provider... yea.
With CDMA, the network time is always provided. Whether it's always accurate or not... is another issue . I've never really had much issue with Sprint providing the right time - even when I am traveling... Phone has always shown the correct time - so long as I have service.

I bet there is an app you can get that will sync the phone to an atomic clock somewhere.
Well, I tried gTimeSync, but the thing is, I still have to update the time after restart. :-/ Well, at least I can correctly update time.
I have the same problem on the same phone, Hungarian Vodafone card..
Somtimes the clock is 1 hour out, sometimes 2... If I change the GMT+ setting, it is going back to the Hungarian one..
Windows Mobile problem I think, same problem with 2 different Vodafone cards, the cards are OK in my HTC HD2.
A registry hack maybe?

The answer to my problem was this picture - http://www.mydigitallife.us/time zone setting.jpg from another topic here on xda forums.
Start - Settings - Personal - Phone - Time Zones - "Automatic change of time zone and clock." - unlock this option and there is our salvation.
Unfortunately, the time probably won't change automatically from summer/winter time, but it's still better than having permanently incorrect time.
Well, see you when I come up to another problem or I just happen to roam these forums.
