Question Has anyone added zram? - Redmi Note 9T

Hi all,
The main issue with this device for me is very clear, lack of memory and the memory management. The 2gb swap doesn't make any difference in my testing.
I think this device would benefit massively from zram or compressed ram as it has quite a strong CPU compared to the ram issues.
I guess we'd just need to unlock the bootloader, root the stock ROM and then turn on zram.
Has anyone tried it?

Is there a particular rom which offers better ram management to allow for apps to stay in the memory longer, and cached apps get less priority?
I'm getting annoyed of apps that are suppose to be running all the time in the notification bar, but they are constantly restarting because the ram gets too low, but in fact, there is enough ram, but it's being taken up by cached apps instead!
Maybe I'm asking too much. Are there ROMS which:
1) offer more ram by being "trim"
2) manage memory better for multitasking
I really wanted to keep this phone stock, but this is pathetic! I feel that my old phone, with a "huge" 256mb ram chip was able to run more software in the background than my GN is! I've stripped all the useful apps off this phone and memory management is still an issue.

isn't the kernel responsible for that and not the rom?

Good question. I figured some roms are made lighter by removing stuff on it you don't need, and when it's done on a system level, I assumed that less ram would be needed for the os to operate.
Maybe someone can explain this?

I mean yeah, to a extent.. I'd believe that ROM and Kernel both contributes to it but kernel is the bigger player when it comes to optimizing "RAM."
I use AOKP + Franco Kernel if that helps. No lag problems, never even had it when it came to stock ICS. You'd might want to check your apps and see if there's a bad app causing memory leaks.

AOKP and a few other roms have the option to change the minimum ram before android os starts killing background apps. The default is about 80MB I believe. You can decrease it (do not forget to check set on boot), but I do not think it is recommended to go too low.
If you are having low memory issues its probably because of a rogue app. Install System Tuner and check for background apps that use more than ~10-20MB of memory.

Hi I'm rooted and have an unlocked bootloader (CM9 RC2 with included FXP kernel). Now I'm wondering if there's any other tweaks I can do, I've heard some people talk about superchargeV6? and SmartassV2? They're suppose to improve RAM from what I understand? When I was on android 2.3.3 games and emulators ran pretty smooth, on CM9 (ICS) they're not too bad but I've noticed a bit more lag from time to time. I'm wondering if one of those RAM enhancers would help in my case. Also, are they safe? I haven't overclocked my CPU because I heard it decreases the over all lifespan of your device. I currently have 306MB of free memory on my phones internal memory ( I still have a few apps to move over btw ) and my RAM is at 177MB free. IDK if there's anything I can do to boost internal memory but surely the RAM can be improved correct? And lastly are there any files or folders on my phones internal memory I don't need? I've noticed a slight change when using Androzip (file manager) on 2.3.3 it went from "/" to "/sdcard". Now it goes from "/" to "/mnt" to "/mnt/sdcard" why is this? Is this ok?? Just some small change I noticed ( perhaps this happened when my bootloader got unlocked? ) If someone could answer these questions and guide me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

V6Supercharger is a script-based application that changes some settings in your phone, some of which tell Android how to pick which apps stay running and when to kill other services. Very useful and has just been updated to work better with Jellybean, if that's of any interest to anyone (other than me, that is).
smartassV2 is a cpu governor, and depending on which kernel you're using (FXP, Mjolnir, LuPuS), you may or may not have this option. smartassv2 is just one of the many options available, but the cpu governor doesn't affect your ram at all, it just affects how quickly or slowly your cpu will speed up and slow down, and when it decides that it needs to change speed.
As far as overclocking, yes, if you keep your phone clocked too high, it could damage your phone. However, given the lifespan of current phones (with newer, better ones released every few months), it's not likely that you'll cause drastic, irreparable damage to your phone should you overclock to, say, 1.1 or 1.2GHz. You could even use an app like SetCPU where the max speed can be changed based on what app is running, what time of day, certain activities you do, etc. Overclocking is just like anything else: All good things in moderation.

V6 supercharger is always nice. Beyond that, I don't know, I've been running ics or jellybean for a while now, I'm used to low ram.

The V6 Supercharger script just tries to use RAM more efficiently. It loads more things into RAM and prioritizes processes such as the launcher above less important processes. Most people experience more fluidity in the UI, mostly when switching tasks or returning to the home screen. Some people claim it helps gaming, though I've not experienced that. I suppose the more apps you have running, the more noticeable the effects will be

so is it worth installing? or perhaps another rom. I'm looking for an even balance between features, internal memory, ram etc. Just an over all better experience : /

zram?

since the note 2 has a lot of memory, my question is, does zram help it? from what I know, devices with more ram does not gain much from enabling it and it also uses more cpu/battery due to the swapping. However, I do not know how disabling it would be as I am using the perseus kernel and its settings are probably set to work well with the zram. Ultimately, should I leave zram on with the default settings or turn it off?

Can you lower the ram usage?

Hi there,
I have the ZF2 with 4GB of ram. After a couple of days of usage, it seems impossible to lower the ram usage below 1.8GB even when I clear the cache of all apps.
However, when I restart the device, my ram usage is below 1GB.
I have uninstall or disabled every app I could without rooting. & I don't want to root now.
Nonetheless, I would like to keep the ram usage of my device as low as possible (2GB of ram use seems a lot to me, especially when I have one or two apps open)
Did you find a tricks or ways to keep 2gb or more ram free at all time ?

Simply, there is no clear way and those numbers are normal. The best memory management is with native linux, not yet available on zenfone 2.

What's the point of always having 2gb of free ram? RAM is completely useless if you aren't using it.

It's not a question of useful or useless. It's a question of is it possible and if yes, how.

Yes, keep the phone in deep sleep with all apps closed and disable everything in autostart , better yet, you can just power off the device
p.s: not even custom roms will run that low, I had cm12.1 with lg g3 3gb ram, I disabled basically everything and phone will still boot with at max 2gb free ram, maybe 2.2gb if you start killing launcher and sytem apps lol
4Gb ram with 2.2-3Gb free Ram is plenty for a cellphone. Its even plenty for a desktop unless you run hard core 3d games like crysis.
The lowest I have seen is 150Mb/1Gb usage with Nexus 7 v1 tablet yet it was hell slow. Note that the more Ram you have, the more the system will use it and cache in it. This will increase apps loading speed since they are directly loaded from Ram vs local storage.
I would love to have an app that lets you select what to cache in Ram, e.g. large high-resolution PDFs that take forever to open and load :crying: I have 300-800Mb PDFs that will take 1 min just to open.

Indeed, an option to decide what to cache would be great.
Can we expect less usage and caching with the 5.1 update or with a custom Rom?

zram or swapfile?

hi all, I have a little question on s4 mini duos I9192.
using "free" or "meminfo" commands displays memory informations, the phisical ram displayed is 1,3 gb but the phone is declared 1,5 gb confused , so I thought it will be some zram but analising the memory its not zram.
by the way there is a swapfile of 1gb.
please can someone confirm this? I am playing with swappiness value and I must be sure if I touch zram or swapfile

I'm guessing your using stock os as that uses a 1gb swap file. Zram is kernel dependant and I don't think stock makes use of this. Although our phones have 1.5gb RAM some of this is stolen by Android OS. The same with our 8gb storage which part of is stolen by Android again leaving us with around 5.5gb.
Would like to know how you get on with different swapiness values, and which you decided to settle on.

Thanks, yes I'm on stock.
I noticed that the 1gb swapfile is little used; with swappiness 100 swapfile is used about 200mb and with swpss 20 about 40mb both after 1 day of use;
Also the used part tends to accumulate and grow from boot but I shutoff phone at night so swapfile resets at boot.
My idea was to delete swapfile to recovery space bit I can't, swapoff doesn't work.
Anyway I think phone is smoother with low swappiness and with medium usage I never suffered lack of ram problems.

swap & Zram are completely useless for a device like ours .....because we have enought RAM and enought power .
thes two are develloped and used before for old low and middle devices
the best is to grenify or freeze unused apps and services for a more lighten rom....

Yes, already greenyfied all and removed all bloat and useless apks.
My doubt is why stock rom has a so large swapfile, a waste of space
