Bricked phone fastboot saying invalid parition name for boot, recovery, etc - Moto G8 (Moto G Fast) Questions & Answers

So I was trying to install lineage OS on my moto g fast but when I rebooted I got red text saying no valid operating system could be found, trying to go into recovery mode via the bootloader gives the same red text screen and as it says in the title whenever I try to flash any image to any partition it fails for example when I try to flash the recovery partition I get
Code:
Sending 'recovery' (24924 KB) OKAY [ 0.732s]
Writing 'recovery' (bootloader) Invalid partition name recovery
FAILED (remote: '')
fastboot: error: Command failed
the error messages for other partitions aren't much different although for the boot partition I instead get
Code:
fastboot: error: Couldn't parse partition size '0x'.
unless I specify flash:raw in which case I get a similar looking error message to the previously shown recovery example
at this point I have no idea what to try to get the phone back into a working state, any help would be appreciated

with hindsight that's the guide I should've followed but alas I followed this https://www.getdroidtips.com/lineage-os-18-1-moto-g-fast/ and when I got to running
Code:
fastboot set_active a
fastboot flash:raw boot boot.img
fastboot flash dtbo dtbo.img
fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
fastboot erase metadata
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash product product.img
I got an error from fastboot when flashing system.img, something about a lack of space which I got to go away by flashing product.img and then flashing system.img again after which I tried to sideload gapps which gave an error of some kind which I don't remember rebooted and the problems I've mentioned in the original post started happening

Ok so I ended up skipping fastboot oem fb_mode_set and just flashed gpt.bin to partition and now I can flash to all the partitions again, I think I can troubleshoot and figure this out to get back to a working system now thank you very much

Use lenovo's rescue and smart assistant: download here. Just plug your phone into your pc. as long as you can get to the bootloader, it will recognize your device automatically, download and flash the proper stock firmware, and your phone will be good as new. It's gotten me out of several soft bricks. This is exactly why I've been hesitant to try flashing a custom ROM on this device. It was difficult enough just getting it rooted, and I don't feel like pulling my hair out dealing with another brick lol.

FAILED (remote: flash_cmds error!)

ZE551ML - 4gb ram
I encountered this error when flashing thru fastboot.
My phone came from no fastboot/recovery then flash firmware with xFSTK, was able to get fastboot.
Tried commands like;
fastboot flash fastboot droidboot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
none of this works, getting " FAILED (remote: flash_cmds error!) " error.
Images are from WW_ZE551ML_2.15.40.13_20150506 official rom.
tried the clear cache command it just escape out of fastboot mode.
Also tried Asus Flash tool but getting failed error.
I hope someone could help.
Try flash the raw for .13 in flashtools ...5 minutes after you get "xfstki"- 'success!' but leave your cable in fone. Hopefully you see it flash to fone in that time. When you do see it flash leave it a while
Then start the flashtools ..if you see small green then red text in fastboot...restart flashtools when until it goes 'sky blue and bigger bold text' you will then get success there
P's, can you put all the links for fwr dnx and ifwi and raw etc here for me for .13 should I need these again ..my pc crashed ugh!
Thanks for your reply,
I'm at work right now.
But I'll try this later.

I was getting the exact same error after using xfstk-downloader_v1.7.0.exe to unbrick my Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML. Not seeing a reply to your post and after searching only to find unrelated posts. I took a whack at it and after a few hours, finally got my device to boot up again *insert Dr. Frankenstein's "It's Alive!" impersonation here*. My hypothesis was that it had to do with the partitioning being read incorrectly since it was the device reporting back issues with execution of the commands. In any case, here is how I got past it.

||What the brick? How it all began (Skippable) ||
The following events occurred on my Zenfone 2 : ZE551ML, originally with firmware LRX21V.WW-ASUS_Z00A-2.20.40.198_20160930_8756 which I foolishly and carelessly used the built-in system update to install the recently transferred firmware update file. after unlocking the bootloader and installing custom recovery, OEM software detected and offered to update for me so i then assumed, it probably detected that it would be compatible right? so i thought, WTH why not?....lol um yea, no. failed but I was having a YOLO moment and just had to do it anyways.
Lesson learned and happy to be alive to tell someone my story ;P.
|| Road to Recover and Encountering the "FAILED (remote: flash_cmds error!" (Skippable) ||
How I ultimately arrived at receiving this error (and for you to decide whether or not it may work for you):
My device was limp bricked where the screen didn't turn on and would only vibrate after holding the power button as an indication of life when beginning with the unbrick guide as previously posted by asus_abz within this thread (or otherwise found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/guide-brick-soft-hard-bricked-zenfone-2-t3284256)
In accordance with the guide, I was able to successfully use xfstk-downloader to get to the first checkpoint of success and arrived at the "not ..familiar ASUS screen but instead 4 color, just like some TV stations stop broadcasting on TV" Which means the device is working off of changes made with droidboot_dnx.img.POS_sign.bin, ifwi.bin, and dnx_fwr.bin
When attempting to use Asus FlashTool 1.0.0.14 to flash the .RAW image file, it would fail for reasons I fail to recall but otherwise...
Any attempts to use an elevated CMD prompt using the
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
^^^^^^^^^would resultin the remote:flash_cmds error!
|| `';~-=Resolving The Issue: Say Goodbye to flash_cmds error!=-~;'` ||
If you don't already have it, downlaod the .RAW format firmware for your device from the aforementioned guide at the Asus Flasher section
Otherwise ZE551ML2.20.40.194 or ZE550ML 2.20.40.155 (direct link from guide but the one for 550 is broken)
Open (EXTRACT) the .RAW image file with Winrar, 7zip or equivalent and extract the contants of the .RAW image file to your ADB directory
Start device in bootloader and connected with fastboot and run the following commands
Code:
fastboot oem erase_osip_header
fastboot oem start_partitioning
fastboot flash /tmp/partition.tbl partition.tbl
fastboot oem partition /tmp/partition.tbl
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase APD
fastboot erase ADF
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem stop_partitioning
fastboot flash fastboot droidboot_sign.bin
Optionally (if you want to restore the full .RAW version)
Code:
fastboot flash ifwi ifwi.bin
Then seal the deal with
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery_sign.bin
fastboot format system
fastboot flash splashscreen splash_sign.bin
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash boot boot_sign.bin
fastboot reboot
Alternatively, you can flash your own recovery and whatnot because by now you should be able to successfully run the flash command for those partitions, but I would suggest flashing back to full stock first and then flash to custom. Personally, I flashed everything from the .RAW firmware except for recovery
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
After the device restarts it might go through the updating android apps screen so expect a longer than usual boot up.
Optionally, you can include "fastboot erase data" if you needed to have a clean reinstall (such as coming from a different version of android) but I didn't bother because I didn't ever successsfully load another ROM and for me, by not wiping data, I was able to have it restored back to how I had it before I made any experimenting with restoring my backup from before the shaninagans.
I hope this helps anyone who may have had the same issue. Hit the Thanks if it does!

fastboot flash ifwi ifwi_ann_a0-mofd_v1-ze551ml.bin

Thanks @Hnk1 for pointing that out! To be sure, (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) if I'm not mistaken, the commands are going to depend if they're unbricking from a failed Lollipop to Marshmallow brick, or a Lollipop to Lollipop update brick, or essentially the last stable android file system build prior to the brick. And just to note in case someone finds this thread far in the future, the commands referenced the filenames that originated from the extracted downloads which had been linked to tutorials and were not changed. Therefore, if restoring using alternative RAW files, one would need to adjust the img/bin files accordingly.

If you don't already have it, downlaod the .RAW format firmware for your device from the aforementioned guide at the Asus Flasher section
Otherwise ZE551ML2.20.40.194 or ZE550ML 2.20.40.155 (direct link from guide but the one for 550 is broken)

In any case, here is how I got past it.

thank you to all for the kind words and more glad to hear it helped you. Perhaps I should rewrite the "tutorial" in a more 'toned down' and chronologically-and-well-laid out manner to be considered for sticky
EDIT: **that is of course, if the MODs see it as a worthwhile effort/meaningful contribution since this can be seen /regarded as a more lengthy answer to a troubleshooting question.

fastboot loop

I followed this thread to install lineage OS on my MI A2 lite:
https://www.getdroidtips.com/lineage-os-16-xiaomi-mi-a2-lite/
IIRC, on this phone there is no recovery partition:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img gives the error Writing 'recovery' FAILED (remote: 'partition table doesn't exist')
I flashed TWRP to boot (fastboot flash boot twrp.img) instead of only starting it (fastboot boot twrp.img)
then I followed the procedure thinking that I was on the recovery partition and tried to install lineage os in boot (where twrp was)
now I can only enter the fastboot mode
fastboot boot twrp.img gives a black screen with device unable to boot error - mdtp image is corrupted
fastboot flash boot twrp.img gives the error Writing 'boot' FAILED (remote: 'partition table doesn't exist')
fastboot getvar current-slot gives current-slot: INVALID
the problem seems to be similar to this one:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/help/device-unable-to-boot-error-mdtp-image-t3926962
though mdtp_a and mdtp_b are there but they are not active and I am not sure what image I should flash there.
How should I proceed?

How did you think to flash LineageOs in boot where TWRP used to be?
Anyway if you didn´t complete this disastrous attempt you could solve it restoring mdtp partition that is a kind of gpt for other devices.
Flash it in both slot using fastboot. Then you´ll can know which partition is active, if the system yet still alive you´ll can boot on it or boot temporarily to TWRP to do your stuff but if not then you´ll need to restore one or more partitions flashing again the whole stock rom through MiFlash tool.

Sorry for delay, yes, in both partitionn you have to flash mdtp, is to restore the table partition.
And about LOS I think you need to read a bit more or you'll have a thermonuclear reaction some day (just kidding) Custom roms come in form of zip and contain scripts that are prepared for developers to can unpack and flash files in the right place so don't worry about it.
First restore your partitions and the next is a ready-to-go.

You´ll find it inside the stock rom.
SOLVED
flashing mtdp_a and mtdp_b did not help, I hat to flash the stock rom again and start the process from scratch
other problems showed up:
I had to downgrade twrp to 3.3.0 to avoid error 7 while flashing LINEAGE OS
and then upgrade it again to 3.3.1 fo avoid error 64 while flashing GAPPS

The System has been destroyed - only fastboot possible

Hello,
I bricked my Redmi Note 8T and I have no idea how to save my phone!
What did I do?
I unlocked my phone with XiaomiTool V2 and added Magisk, installed TWRP and trieed to add LineageOS.
So I tried to restart but the system stocked in a "boot - shutdown - boot - shutdown..."
I read in a description, that I have to delete in TWRP-mode some folders in WIPE so I deleted "System", "Data", "Cache", and maybe some other folders! I'm so stupid!
So there is only "The System has been destroyed", after around 30 seconds the system starts again and the bad massage comes again...
It is just possible to start the fastboot mode!
So I tried again to flash and boot TWRP:
sudo fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
target reported max download size of 804274176 bytes
sending 'recovery' (65536 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.617s]
writing 'recovery'...
OKAY [ 0.349s]
finished. total time: 1.967s
sudo fastboot boot twrp.img
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 1.615s]
booting...
FAILED (status read failed (No such device))
finished. total time: 37.120s
Afterwards the system says again "The System has been destroyed".
So now I don't have any idea to save my phone!
Please help me! I trust in you!
My OS on the PC is Ubuntu for your information...
Best wishes

Doesn't sound so bad. And of you had searched the forum before panic posting, you would have easily found at least 3 similar threads already started.
Not knowing what you had wiped from twrp before, leaves the best option for you is to flash the factory fastboot ROM, and then start over.
There is a thread here about fastboot ROM i beleive.

in fastboot rom there must be a file vbmeta.img....if you don't want to download the fastboot rom then download vbmeta.img from here or here..
then download latest platform tools.
extract the plaform tools zip...copy vbmeta.img in this folder, open cmd/terminal in this folder path and flash vbmeta with phone in fastboot mode by this command:
Code:
fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img

I tried it with the vbmeta.img from the fastboot Redmi Note 8 – Global Stable ROM (V11.0.9.0.PCOMIXM | MIUI 11 | Android 9.0) and the platform-tools for linux from xiaomifirmware.com.

After trying again I got:

there is an app called Moto Display . disable it, remove the update from the market and stop the auto update
I've tried this method on my x30 Pro / Edge 30 Ultra. After the initial setup and accepting Google terms there is a black screen with a non-working back button. I can take a screenshot and force shutdown the phone but always end up at this blackscreen after going through the setup. Is this related to the Moto Display / Moto app? Cant even get to the point where I can disable it.
Edit: Went through the complete setup (including google login) until blackscreen. Then rebooted to fastboot and erased all partitions according to the XML again. Phone boots up, now is the EU version!
Can anyone confirm if doing this will make the TMobile Volte USA work? There is an issue where 5g works but the moment you make a call, the phone switches to 2g/3g. Thanks.

Same problem here but no Moto Display app to be found either on installed or system apps. Issue is as it recognized an official case switching or some gestures activated as a specific lockscreen that cannot be deblocked. At least this is what is happening to me:

UPDATE: No, it did not. At first I locked and unlocked fine, but when falling into lockscreen due to inactivty, the problem is back. app data is now 0 bytes but still having the issue, and the app is not allowed to be disabled. Any help is welcome!
Now I have another problem. In system, Google Play system update is out of date (January 1st). If I update, then after rebooting it is fine, but then in few minutes it crashes and update is lost. Any ideas?
So is everyone saying it doesn't work?
