Is Greenify still useful? - Xiaomi Mi 6 Questions & Answers

Hey guys I saw that new systems can hibernate apps on their own now. But something I am very curious about is, is greenify still needed in our systems?

I stopped using it on Pie and I've been using greenify since my first rooted phone.
Android has great resource management now so most people don't explicitly need greenify.
But it is in no way obsolete. There's loads of advanced features built in that work well. If you don't trust the android system to really hibernate certain apps you can use greenify go be sure.
There are still reasons to use it, but if you were half needing it half not needing it then it would be easier to just stop using it and use the restrict option in battery settings for apps.

Thank you for the reply. I was solely using it to hibernate the downloaded apps. However, I feel like in Pie it is not as much needed as well now that you've mentioned it.

A million apps running in background???

I keep "killing" them with the worthless task manager (which doesn't make a lot of since, since Android is linux based) and these pre-loaded apps like MP3 and all kinds of random crap keep starting back up in the background.

Eh? Killing tasks, even in a Linux environment, makes sense.
You need to download the application Autostarts from the market, I wrote up a guide for preserving battery life that has a section about what services are alright to disable with it. It's located here.

Or root and get rid of the crap you dont want. My slide is running stock 2.1 and all that pre installed junk is gone and most of the time my Ram is above or around 200mb free. Thats something to think about.
root?

Are you running a stable root on your device? I really want to root my phone but I am just bidding my time until the next update comes out.
There is a difference between running in the background and idle in the background. If an app is running that you don't want, it is worth killing the process. But if an app is idle and you kill it, linux just loads up a new app, so you just start an endless loop wasting battery life.

[Q] too many task-killers?

Hey all,
I've got a rooted Incredible, thanks to many of you on here. I installed AutoKiller Memory Optimizer soon after rooting...as well as SetCPU. I played with the settings and have been using those for the past month that I've been running with no issues. After reading a post in Lifehacker yesterday I thought twice about using some of the tools they listed there...such as Autostarts and Watchdog...instead of Autokiller.
Without this becoming a discussion about whether or not task-killers are needed on my Sense 2.2, what would be my best set-up? Should I use all three, or am I doubling up when I don't need to? And finally, is Autokiller a "task-killer"?
What should I be running on my machine?
Thanks.
With my experience, on 2.2, task killers result in worse battery life. I have no task killer, no setcpu, and I'm on stock 2.2 with KingBFS#5 kernel and get an average of 19 hours on the stock battery.

Auto killer is not a task killer per se, it allows you to tweak the parameters of Android's internal memory management. It works very well from my experience with it.

since root i find no reason for any task killers.
I have deleted all bloatware.
And if i have battery trouble I will use systempanel to find out what's the trouble maker.
Auto-killers seem like a good option but so far i don't have any trouble apps.
I think I'll delete Autostarts and Watchdog and possibly just stick with Auto Killer for now. It seems as if it's not really a task killer...but it keeps everything running smoothly. I just think that Android is smart enough to keep things running when they need to run, or may need to run. There are apps that go out of control...but there's easier ways to monitor those. In time, I think I may uninstall...or be persuaded to uninstall AutoKiller.
I've been thinking about kernels, radios...and new ROMs ever since I rooted. As far as right now, I'm cool with Sense...but having more control of it and what runs.

Well if it's any help to you I am running virtuous with a Hydra kernel and so far it's splendid.

I might think about doing that. The one thing that would sway me would be getting updates and tweaks faster than Verizon or HTC get them to me.
If I backā€“up my Sense 2.2, and then start playing with Roms, kernels, radios, etc... and I don't like it, can I go back to basics?

Yes backups would allow you to revert to when you took the backup. Virtuous is very good and close to stock but with options. Check out the forum "best sense ROM" in the incredible general section for sense based roms

[ROOT]Quick performance and battery life guide.

This is going to be brief for now and I'll update with links later, plus extra tips that can help a lot. Here goes.
I've been modding/tweaking android phones for around a year and had a few devices, plus done other peoples devices
You'll want to make a full backup in cwm before anything.
ALWAYS THOROUGHLY READ THE INSTRUCTIONS, GUIDES AND F.A.Q'S BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANYTHING. DO IT TWICE. IT NEVER HURTS TO EDUCATE YOURSELF BUT IT WILL HURT IF YOU BREAK YOUR DEVICE AND I WILL "LAUGH OUT LOUD" BECAUSE I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE AND YOU HAVE BE ADVISED.
Best performance mod is cross breeder, it's a tad out dated now but still the most stable and battery friendly. Also blocks ads.

A must have root app is greenify, it hibernates apps at your will or when the screen is off without freezing them etc. Basically it prevents apps and games from chewing your battery and keeps your ram nice and free. Don't use other ram apps with this.

DS battery saver works well and actually keeps processes dead while your phone is asleep, keeping your phone in deep sleep. I don't always use this unless I get random battery drains during sleep.

Viper4android (find in xda) is the best android sound mod but still in the works. Its immense and installs drivers that make your audio crispy clear, whilst giving plenty of extra sound features. It can be a ***** to get it working properly though.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2191223
Last but not least, Nova launcher is the best and fastest launcher with overall best features.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1389071
I'm gonna update my profile on xda with all the links and from my experience and research these are the overall must haves.
Also if you haven't done already, unlock developer options by going to settings/about, scroll down to build number and keep clicking it until it says you are now a developer. This will unlock tons of developer options such as debugging and onscreen performance stats. Be careful with these and I recommend setting limit background processes to 4 on each boot, and animation scales to 0.5.
Also please note that developers of these mods and apps worked hard and deserve credit where due. Not me, I'm just an eccentric-android-person-thing. These are my opinions and should not be taken as a clear certainty, but moreover: "my favorite android ****".

thanks for sharing this with us.
I've tested the Viper4android App/Mod and it sounds really good with my Earpods
"CrossBreeder" is something I used with my SGS3 and was very happy with. Will try to install it now on my s4 mini.
"Greenify" is a very good App, that I am using for quite a long time now.
Never used "DS battery saver", but as you said you only use it when getting random drains, so I think this isn't necessary for me.
finally I don't think there is a big difference between nova and apex launcher, so I will stick to apex

Why does it seem like Android phones slow down when.....

My question is why is it that Android phones slow down and become laggy once you install a lot of apps? It's annoying because I'm one that Installs a lot of apps on my phone. It's currently happening on sgh m919. It also was happening to my old RAZR Maxx HD.

So does Iphone...And any other smart phone....So do computers....Its because you download so much crap and have so much crap running you fill up all your ram.
It matters greatly WHAT apps you download.
Properly designed apps that aren't invasive don't take up any RAM or other system resources (other than storage space) when not being actively used.
It's apps that are designed to run constantly and use up system resources with high priority that bog down the speed and make the rom sluggish. Sometimes that is done because the app developer doesn't know what he's doing. Sometimes it's by design because the app developer doesn't care how the side effects are and he just wants his app running all the time for various reasons. Some apps needs that, like a text messaging app that has to be ready to go the second a message comes in. Some apps don't need that kind of priority but are given it anyway.
You can even have well designed apps that are able to produce notifications that don't run at full speed in the background hogging up system resources.
It's having too many of those kinds of apps installed that cause you problems. Not apps in general.

The thread about better battery life: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357417 shows how to make apps better behaved.
Using Greenify and the other methods discussed will also make your phone less laggy, as well as saving battery. Almost all messaging apps, as well as Facebook, etc will really slow things down.

Lag on any ROM

Hello, I've been experiencing lots of lag with both OxygenOS (and OOS ROMs) and custom ROMS.
I honestly don't know what's causing it, this is what I have installed that could ruin my performance:
So I made a list of all the apps I have installed, so you could help me figure out what's causing it.
Here's the list.
Don't use xposed or pirated apps.

I usually buy everything I have and I use Lucky Patcher only for apps with intrusive nonremovable ads
And I'm pretty sure Xposed is not the problem as I'm not tweaking Android's UI in any way.
Try without greenify.
Use background restrictor from XDA labs instead.
I would also remove xposed. Xposed causes a lot of errors. This device does not lagg. On OOS with stock kernel. U cannot make it lag unless ur making it lag. Like messing around with the kernel etc. Custom ROMs are even smoother with flash kernel

Uninstalled greenify and installed backgroundrestrictor, I got a nice performance boost.
But I really need Xposed for XInsta so I'm gonna keep it unless I find an alternative.
Or can I just disable Lucky Patcher within Xposed and just keep the normal version, will it impact the system performance-wise?

If u can. Remove lucky patcher or at least from xposed.
If u need ad blocker. Use ad away. 0 performance impact.
I stopped using Lucky Patcher 2 years ago, when the official Xposed was released for every phone. Lucky Patcher itself contains many mods and tweaks, may conflict with user apps and system apps so Im sure it's no go for me.

I played around with the toggles (keep legit licenses, etc.) and found a happy spot, that's why I kept it.
I have this issue too. Doesnt matter what rom I try, I've tried 90% of them. Even on a clean flash, with just a few google apps, like on G+ it laggs like heck scrolling through the posts. Some roms are slightly better than others, also when trying custom kernels, if I install kernel auditor and just make 1 change, doesnt matter what, its like input boost gets enabled for all cpu's and they all jump to 1800mhz when i touch the screen. only way to get it to stop is to change the governor to conservative. It just seems like this phone is laggy by nature. lol that sounded funny.
