[INFO] How I got ROOT and S-OFF on my Verizon M9!!! - Verizon HTC One (M9)

First of all, a BIG thanks to @dottat for his willingness to provide this for us!! :good: Secondly, the more of us with a rooted/unlocked M9 - the more development we'll see for the Verizon M9! And finally, here are the details to how I achieved root access, S-OFF and a custom recovery on my M9
What you need:
•Verizon M9
•Patience (don't hurt your mailman)
•Appreciation (via donation)
•Mailing address
•Paypal
Basic steps
1. PM @dottat - request an unlock for your VZW M9
2. Pack up your M9 and send it to him (he'll do the hard part)
3. Send your DONATION - I gave him $25 plus the amount it will cost him to ship it back.
*Per xda rules, there is to be NO selling on the site. So, this is why you see the term "donation" in this thread.
I am VERY satisfied with how smoothly everything went and HIGHLY RECOMMEND using this same method! Just ask everyone else who has done this as well. He sends your phone back to you the SAME DAY he gets it. You'll have your M9 rooted, with TWRP installed, unlocked bootloader - S-Off. The java card he is using to do this is NOT CHEAP, so don't hesitate to send more $ if you can spare it. I love this method because its a win/win for us all. We get S-Off and he gets most of his money back
Anyways, it could be a while til a root exploit comes to the Verizon M9. That's why I'm recommending you do this too!

This is an offer I'm seriously considering! Thank you for the recommendation.

I also can attest to @dottat being an awesome human being and sending me back my phone immediately in perfect rooted unlocked twrping condition. Donated him $20 plus shipping both ways. It was such a easy process (I have my old s4 to use while it was shipping so not a big deal) so definitely recommend doing this. Currently on viperonem9 rom with elemental x kernel rooted and xposed and colour control set up so the screen looks way better. Wouldn't have been possible without his awesomeness. Thanks again @dottat

Yup @dottat a awesome guy .did mine in 30min..donated him $60...plus the cost of shipping over night both ways..he was even going to use his own money from donation to cover a mistake FedEx did..but I refused...FYI last time I'm using FedEx..they messed up twice

Any option for those of us who do not live in the US anymore?
I got my Verizon M9 hanging around here but I'm hating the bloatware apps, verizon's bootlogo and the HTC Sense. I would be a happy HTC customer otherwise..
Any news from HTCDeveloper? I'm kinda losing my temper here..

I ran across this today. Most likely won't work, but worth a shot I guess. It says for for certain m9 variants but doesn't specify Verizon. I would try for you, but I had dottat s-off my Verizon m9.

It would work in theory but it requires unlocked bootloader, which is not an option right now thanks to the lack of HTC DEV support.

I have been waiting since day one of release to s-off/unlock or at least root my m9. I bought this phone the day it was released, not even considering the chance that there would be this much trouble to achieve. I had the HTC Rezound (verizon) and the m7(sprint) and now the m9 (verizon).
If there is a way for someone to perform this task, can we not get a guide to do such and share it with the world?!

Its not a secret, look around. You need a java card. (Which are EXPENSIVE.)
Which is exactly why there are multiple users willing to do it for you. (For a small donation)

^^^^This....do what the TS says....all will be good..and take care of the Devs and people offering this service up.

Dude DOTTAT is amazing. He will respond to any and all messages within seconds!! He let me know the phone was there 5 minutes after he recieved it and 30 minutes later hes on the way to the post office to drop my phone off! You cant beat that service!

I don't normally post much here, but I want to add that I also had dottat handle my s-off and root. The same day he received the phone he had it back in the mail on its way back to me. Very happy with the service and was glad to give him a donation of $25+.
If you are worried about losing your new phone, relax. I bought the phone and didn't get to use it (chose not to use it because it wasn't rooted yet). I eventually broke down and sent it to him (yep, I was hesitant too). But I have no fear.
If I buy an M10 next year and he can s-off the phone, I'll send it to him without any concern at all.

Well said guys, I also was the same, had the M9 for a few weeks, maybe longer, but didn't even turn it on, was on M8, didn't want to ship device, but with Doug (dottat) there is really no worry, throw some insurance on the shipping, pack it correctly and sit back and let him do his magic. You can't beat working with Doug. Always responds to you, doesn't leave you hanging, will have the device in hand before you even realize it's landed to him, and will have the device back on its way to you very quickly. (for me, he had a tracking # for the phone back to me before I even saw that it had arrived!)
Thanks again, Doug! @dottat

Now that you have shown your true colors... I ask that you take a look at when this thread was created. Back then it wasn't an environment where hardly anyone had a java card or clip. Your thread was posted by you and was a direct advertisement that was in duplication to the currently supported java card thread.
I really don't understand what is so hard to understand about this notion. As I mentioned to you in PM, you are new here with no credibility for folks to send their $600 device to. You NEED to be vetted. Not turning your fire on me or any other member of this community.
If you choose to continue to make waves, we will shut that thread and folks can be left to find their own ways to get s-off.
I have done more favors for this community both as a recognized contributor and a moderator. I have saved countless phones and done many s-off's for nothing. I have even used my own donations to pay to ship phones for which I didn't even take anything to s-off.
Unless you can say the same, we are done here.

Just to add emphasis to the above, dottat has also spent countless hours via remote desktop assisting members (for free as always) with any and all related phone issues. Most everyone here can attest to his contributions to XDA and his efforts to go above and beyond so who are you to judge or make such claim? I suggest you check your facts before you spout off senseless garbage and become another waste of time for everyone else here. So far all you've managed to contribute to anyone here is trolling.

Something worth worrying about regarding the One X

Edit: its been reported that at&t is indeed blocking the unlock for their version of this device.
The release of the One X has us all very excited, and there is much reason to be excited. Yet, I feel like many people don't really understand some of the issues we may be up against. Let's take into account some recent HTC phones that came out. Let's look at the Vivid and Rezound. Both of these devices did not have the option to unlock the bootloader until months after. In fact, HTC was not even planning on talking about releasing the unlock until 6 months or later after initial release of the device. We started petitions, spammed the twitters and facebooks of AT&T/Verizon and HTC. It was amazing how each just blamed eachother for the locked bootloaders. Keep in mind this was AFTER the CEO of HTC promised no more locked bootloaders. Samsung does not ship locked bootloaders either. After a few months of begging and pleading, we eventually got official HTC dev unlock. But by that time, most the devs and community were gone.
We had a few teams working very hard on cracking the Vivid/Rezound but to no avail. Apparently HTC upped their game compared to past devices, and to this day we still don't even have unofficial bootloader unlock, s off, sim unlock, etc. On AT&T, the Vivid was one of the best spec'd devices, if not the best, out at the time. Yet, due to the actions of HTC/AT&T, the development was absolutely screwed. At this point in time we have only three or four devs with ROMs, no doubt we would have had tons more if not for the locked bootloader issues.
We need to talk with HTC before the release of this device to make sure the One X doesn't get screwed as bad as the Vivid did. You guys don't know how much it sucks to wait months and months to even put a custom ROM on your phone. We need to hold HTC to their promise. Sure, we can rely on unofficial methods, but then there's always that "what if" factor if nothing happens there.
EDIT: Willyami found this, I'm happy to hear temp-root is already achieved. Yet the article still states we need bootloader unlock or S OFF for perm root...

The One X is already rooted by Modaco. So I do believe this wont be such a problem to One X.

i think people need to enjoy the phone a bit more, than thinking about custom roms and such. That's certainly not why im buying the phone, nor is it in the discussion. Maybe months or a year i would be open to it, but right now i can see myself enjoying it stock. Especially with ICS on board.

Yea it's your choice, but the phone isn't even out yet. I just don't understand buying a phone because of what rom you could possibly get on it. Just my opinion.
Unfortunately, that is only temp root. It is not a permanent root solution. This link is the exact method described in the article and its from this forums dev section.

A HUGE factor that goes into what phone I buy is how big the potential is for development. I think that's a pretty common thing to look for for most XDA'ers.

HTC have already released the source code to the Sensation ICS kernel, and it's not even properly rolled out yet. Doesn't seem laggy to me
Calm down dude!
HTC learned the hard lesson of Sensation/sgs2.
They losed 3 months of potential buyers (and that made the whole difference in sales volume) because they locked the bootloader.
sgs2 won because it was unlocked and rooted easily.
The HTC One X is already rooted thanks to Modaco, so no need to worry at all, also Mike did a custom rom already, there are many Sensation devs switching to One X...
Another pro argument might be that this will be a real flagship device. As we all know, htc released much too many phones in 2011 (close to 50 I heard in an xda-tv episode ) and they realized the problems that come with such an approach.
The vivid or the rezound might just have been skipped by most devs, some of the better are even still on the 2 year old HD2.
I really hope that this will be the next HD2, it's got all the potential to be the next best phone ever.
I believe that HTC are changing and learning. If you see the communications between them and XDA over the last year, if you see the HTCDev site, if you see the list of ICS updates, if you see the API's they are releasing, etc.
If you look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCXgL7MDsIc Jeff clearly says it will be unlocked.
Also I agree with their reasoning for locking the boot loader, and as long as they release the unlock tool I think its a good process to ensure only those who know and accept the consequences will use it.
PS. Also the HTC One X is not tied to a partner so it should give HTC full control of what they do with it. Were as the HTC One XL is tied to AT&T so it may mean for that device its more complicated a process to get AT&T to agree to unlock the boot loader.
The "One" series must have been made for something, didn't they say they are trying to make their phones more recognisable too? In that case, it makes perfect sense to not release 50 phones a year (or one every week), as that really tarnishes the brand
i've never unlocked a phone on htcdev, but it has a generic unlock option.
you have to submit an identifier token you can query with fastboot, and you are getting a unlock binary sent by email which you can flash with fastboot to unlock the phone. if the hboot of the phone supports this.
seems very generic to me, and i guess you can already unlock a htc-one device using this method
Edit: Ops! I am wrong... please see later posts! Sorry blubbers!

A custom rom means nothing. Did you even read the article or my post?? It says you still need s off or bootloader unlock for permanent root. Modaco only found temp root.

HTC One X - AT&T Development Model?

Hey guys,
I just bought an HTC One X on ebay and when I got it in the mail today it had all sorts of interesting markings on it. It has the AT&T branding on the top and when I boot up the phone it says "This build is for development purposes only...."
Would this be of any use to community to dump this particular phone?

Updated! Added some bootloader images.
http://imgur.com/a/bomFa
Yeah, make sure you dump other stuff like the hboot, radio, etc.. as well. If you can. Might be of use to other teams trying to get S-OFF.
I hate to ask a stupid question, but how do I do that? If someone is willing to walk me through it, I'll dump anything off the one that anyone needs.
S4 or Tegra?

It's got the S4 in it. In the hardware information menu, it lists it as 1.5Ghz dual core.

Hey, might be wise to put this the the general and dev sections of the One XL. Most of the people on that forum are going to be buying the at&t version. This would not only help them but possibly this forum as well. We need to have people from both forums help you out getting the necessary stuff off the phone you scored. So, go ahead and link this thread over there as well.

better watch out, HTC will be calling you to get their phone back. votecow -- if you are worried about HTC pushing legal issues on you -- you have no reason to be. STAND STRONG. Dont listen to them.
If they try... do not answer the phone or anything -- do not respond to any emails. Do not respond. DO NOT RESPOND. They will try to scare the bejeesus out of you but they have absolutely no legal standing to do so because unless you stole that device off a HTC employed developer, then they have absolutely nothing against you legally.
OK? stand strong.
If you do not want to deal with such crap, feel free to forward whatever crap you get to joshcues at gmail dot com and I will be more than happy to take care of it for you. Of course I will establish a connection with you first before replying to whomever is making such claims.
This is awesome and I love this cat and mouse game we play with the OEM's but sometimes people actually surrender to these OEM's, but from what I have seen of your obtaining the phone and if you have receipt of purchase from whatever seller on EBay - then you have absolutely no reason to be worried. OK?
You are safe as safe can be. HTC's only claim would be against the seller. Not you. Capisce?
Can you post benchmark results like antutu, quadrant, linpack that will be great to see how it does against the quad core one x

s-off and bootloader unlock question

Hi all!
Just picked up an M9 this week... Had an M8 prior to that. I've been reading through the forums and spent some time on the M8 forums flashing, testing, and customizing the phone with Roms. I've been reading about the M9 and have noticed some mention that Verizon is firm about a locked bootloader and all. I was curious how on the M8, S-off and unlocking the bootloader was achieved if Verizon is so strict about keeping the phone locked down? Thanks for any responses in advance Looking forward to customizing this beast of a phone. Thank you to all the Devs that make all of this possible!
Cheers,
Ren

Just picked up an M9 this week... Had an M8 prior to that. I've been reading through the forums and spent some time on the M8 forums flashing, testing, and customizing the phone with Roms. I've been reading about the M9 and have noticed some mention that Verizon is firm about a locked bootloader and all. I was curious how on the M8, S-off and unlocking the bootloader was achieved if Verizon is so strict about keeping the phone locked down? Thanks for any responses in advance Looking forward to customizing this beast of a phone. Thank you to all the Devs that make all of this possible!
Cheers,
Ren

The M8 was like this when it first came out. Yes Verizon is strict. From what I have been told they are trying to find a Temporary Root Exploit to be able to S-Off and all that goodness. We just have to be patient like the First Model M8 people were. Luckily when I first got my M8 it was rootable and stuff. So just be patient, or feel free to donate to jcase and beaups to help buy them energy drinks.
Everything @Balian67 said an also one tip. Don't do any updates till you are s-off as updates could cause exploit not to work if there is a exploit released.

Glad I read this thread, didn't even think about updates changing things for getting rooted and eventually S-Off!

Totally agree with this!! Oh my lord is there a difference between Touchwiz and Sense. I did go back to Nova Launcher for the actual day-to-day launcher but the framework is...I dare to say...enjoyable to use. This is my first HTC phone, although I've worked on a few for friends, but I'm loving it so far.

The way Samsung complicates settings drives me bonkers. It just doesn't need to be that complicated.
I'm in S6 trial week. Lol. So far not impressed. The so called super snappy touchwiz has a laggy keyboard whether stock or google. Also don't get me started on Chrome browser lag. Little things here and there that are non existent on even the m8. Overall its snappy but it still has annoying hicups here and there. Gonna take a miracle for me not to exchange for an m9 next weekend.
I had an M7 but not an M8 and had put AOSP on it because Sense just didn't feel right to me.
I bought an M9 because of the retail employee deal of no-contract for $300 and trading in for the new one every year. Ditched my G3 and haven't looked back. I love Sense 7. Not only is the UI smooth and really easy to use, the whole design language flows so well with the physical design of the phone. I don't think I'll be putting a custom ROM on this but I would love root for an ad blocker. I forgot how many ads there were on phones until I had to use this M9 without root.
Is anyone planning on making a bounty thread?

No need really. Bounty threads are worthless distractions too.
For example, one of the last ones claimed only netted the receiver 30% of all promised funds.
Sunshine will likely include vzw some time in the near future...you probably didn't use it on your m7 but it's a standalone app and costs $25.

Well, it worked on the S5, that's for sure. Leading to the most prolific exploit in android history with Towelroot, so I wouldn't say pointless. I'm not sure the exact % that paid their pledges, but I paid mine. The ads in apps and webpages are really starting to bug me honestly, and I miss my battery-saving apps and xposed modules. I jumped to HTC from the S5 specially to restore bootloader access and ultimately CM-based ROM's to my phone experience. I guess leaving Verizon would have been a more thoughtful choice, but oh well. If anyone starts a bounty thread (and yes I know almost everyone thinks its a bad idea), I'm in.
That being said, much respect to the people working on a root method for us currently. You guys make my little phone hacking hobby possible, so thank you.

I don't know exactly how true it was, but when I first got my M8 and found out that I had to pay $25 to get S-OFF, at first I was hesitant...But I kept reading WHY and immediately understood and paid right away. It separates guys like us who pay their pledge from people who DON'T. As I am sure you would EASILY pay the $25 to get S-OFF. I know I would. I almost prefer it this way, because im pretty much sure it comes with tech support for those who need it. If only more americans stood by their word instead of promising things they would never fulfill. I know that this community has always been about contributing and free things to make all of our experiences better. I get that, but all too often, people take the work and claim it to be theirs. I remember a few devs (that I talked to a lot) had this problem with users of the Samsung Moment and HTC Evo 4G. So between all of the devs hard work not being appreciated (especially when they do this stuff for THEIR phone and they release it to us to enjoy and some people are always complaining or demanding features, yet they don't contribute by donating to the dev so they can buy energy drinks to keep their mind going, or beer to help relax them after they finished a massive update that fixed all the bugs and added features and stuff. Then people wonder why they have to pay $25. Well I have been a member of XDA for years, contributed a lot here or on irc chat, and I will gladly pay $25 to get S-OFF, Root, and Custom Recovery. Why? Because since the DAWN of xda, everyones phone has been made far better then what ANY manufacturer gives us. I mean seriously...I would have Android Lollipop on devices that Samsung or whoever has long gone moved on from. Why? Because of XDA, and the devs. I swear if everyone paid $25 these devs would be able to buy all sorts of devices to root for us. I know I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro, and an HTC. So I appreciate it, and you know what? I consider that $25 a donation to have root on devices period. Why? Because without the people who know what they're doing, I wouldn't be able to install xposed, make entire backups of my phone (so if the device fails while on warranty), I can EASILY restore my phone. I had that happen with my old HTC Evo 4G LTE. That phone broke 3 times on me and each replacement bestbuy gave me (2), all I had to do was get S-OFF flash a custom recovery, and do a "Restore" then all my texts were there, apps were there (with data), call logs were there. I can go on. That $25 is security for me. So saying all that, I will sit here as patient as I can be to get S-OFF and when the time comes to hit the pay button, there wont be a second thought. No regrets. No more stress. Any more Andybones roms to flash.
BOOM (pardon all the grammatical errors, yall get my point.............right?)

UPDATESSS

http://www.technobuffalo.com/2015/06/11/htc-one-m9-gets-big-camera-update/
Did anyone see this? Looks promising, i hope a dev can make a stock rooted version!
To be honest, id probably flash that update. Im in Israel and i have yet to find someone with a Java card here. Stock isnt horribleeeee but i miss Cyanogen/AOSP
Stock isn't bad at all if you disable all the crap. I'm pretty much resigned to the fact we're not getting root.
I have root. Dottat is only an inbox message and a shipping charge+donation away.
Ok, a hundred people or so will have root. Which means there's not a whole lot of development that will be happening, so I'll just live with stock.

I disagree, it takes time to get things going. Most the Developers (that I know of anyway) that are on Verizon have gotten their phones S-OFF, and are working hard to bring us the goodies. It will only get better from here, and those who are patient enough or don't feel like shipping their devices, will have all the goodies waiting for them, as we are working hard getting the ball rolling. It will only keep getting better and better. Even if SunShine NEVER brings support to Verizon, their any many amazing people with Java Cards who are 100% trustworthy and depending how you ship your device it can be back the same week. (I personally sent my phone out with $400 insurance on a Monday, and the phone was back in my hands by Wednesday - It was on it's way back to me with a tracking # before I even had time to see if the phone had made it!) 100% worth it, and thank you again @dottat!

i appreciate the encouragement. ive considering learning how to.compile, but i dont know programming and id assume id need to know that. if its a situation of placing files in this directory and that directory, and changing paths in this code and that....i can probably do that.
Anybody knows of camera update ..is it only firmware or software for it to work. Example is the international builds we are running latest build but not firmware. Somebody told me we need firmware to see change on camera, but a really can see a difference in camera quality without the firmware

The camera update is in the play store now. Doesn't fix the missing manual controls in raw mode though.

Next phones, esp following Santod's work

I'm loving the update to Santod's GPE+ rom. My phone is snappy again! Thank you, Santod.
I wanted to ask about what phones people are moving to after the M7. VZW has a $100 discount and so I was ready to pull the trigger on the M9 for a great deal. Before buying, I decided to check out the VZW M9 XDA forum and find it is a ghost town. A short search later, I found the VZW M9 is too difficult to s-off (you have to send it to a guy).
I mostly want to follow Santod's development but want to upgrade my device. Any recommendations? Santod, what's your next device? I've been with you from TB, DNA, now M7 and have an overdue donation to make.
Buy a used M8?
Wait for M10 later in the year?
Move to HTC's new A9 phone?
I feel very loyal to HTC and want to remain with VZW.

I didn't look too in depth at this point for alternative methods for s-off on the VZW M9. I'm always willing to pay for Sunshine, but that's about the extent to which I'll go.
I hope there is not a similar situation if I opt to wait for the M10. Seems like HTC is more liberal with providing unlocked bootloaders (A9) but VZW isn't there yet (they don't sell the A9).

You likely will have the same problem with the m10. Since we aren't allowed to unlock bootloaders and our software version is always different from everyone else you will need a temp root solution + s-off solution. No publicly available temp root solution was ever made for public consumption on the m9 hence the need to get s-off elsewhere.
I've been considering getting my next phone directly from HTC. supposedly all new unlocked phones are compatible with Verizon's network, and I am getting tired of Verizon's device restrictions. Even AT&T allowed the HTC phones to have their bootloaders unlocked (but not their Samsungs). The thought of sitting around with an unrooted phone waiting for some hacker genius to figure out a security flaw to break it-- which gets harder and harder all the time-- does not appeal to me.
My device still works great, though, aside from the pink camera. My main motivation for wanting something new at this point is that developer support for our device is rapidly fading. Kinda sad...
