[Q] Fire TV + USB Sound Card? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everybody,
I don't have my Fire TV (the launch in Germany is still 2.5 weeks away) but I do have a question.. at least temporarily I'd like to connect it to an older monitor of mine which only has DVI input (I don't own an actual TV at the moment.. well, a tube tv set for my SNES ). I do have an HDMI->DVI cable but I just realized that I won't get any sound this way.. and since the speaker I want to use don't have optical input I have to find another way to connect those. One option would be a digital-analog converter (like this one, for example: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Digi...-Audio-Converter-Adapter-DHTV/2032388430.html) but someone mentioned that it's possible that the Fire TV works with regular USB sound cards which would be cheaper and not require yet another power plug and a bunch of cables.
I realize it's not an optimal setup at all, bus as I said, it's temporary. Has anyone tried this or maybe have a cheap usb sound card lying around they'd be willing to test for me? Tried the search function but didn't get any results.
kind regards

I wouldn't even bother using an external DAC connected to the optical out if you re planning
to use an HDMI to DVI adapter. I, and a few others, have discovered out that the FireTV does
not support HDMI to DVI because of HDCP. Amazon video content will not display on the monitor
at all, and video from XBMC results in many dropped frames and video instability. You will also
not get any sound out of the optical. The only way to get around this is to find an HDMI splitter
or switch which will emulate HDCP, and that will cost.
Saying that, I would assume that the same would happen with USB audio (if supported), although
I have not tried it myself.

Thank you for the quick reply, it was just in time to cancel the order I placed for a cheap toslink-rca adapter
Will I at least be able to set up and tinker with the Fire TV? If I can't use it properly at my own place until I get an actual TV I thought I might give it to my mum for the time being, but I wanted to set it up first cause she probably won't be able to do that

Yes... it still makes a nice box to tinker with. That's what I did before
getting a HDMI switch to bypass the audio issue with DVI. You just
won't get any audio and video playback will be unstable to non-existent,
depending on the source. However, all the FTV menus will still display
fine, and so will games and other apps.
The only other thing to note is that since video will not display properly,
you will not see the opening video when you first activate your FTV:
you will get a blank screen. This made me think that I had issues with
the device and that it had crashed, but you really have to just wait through
it. However, I don't know what repercussions this may have on activating
your device if you are trying to avoid the automatic updates to non-rootable
firmware versions during initial setup.

I'd assume it's going to ship with new recent firmware, but thanks for the heads up, I'll set it up at work then, there I've got access to a display with HDMI input
edit:
Or I'll just block the firmware update thingie at home, following these instructions.

Any news on USB audio?
Did someone try XBMC and USB audio out? I have a pure Digi Amp and like to have volume control. I assume optical out is without volume control...
Cheers,
Andy

TV out like the fuze?

Just recently got a Touch Pro 2 (t mobile, unlocked) and, being a previous Fuze owner, that I could install a cab (to the fuze) to force tv-out. Then, using the dongle and a cheap 3.5mm to video out cable, I could then use the tv out option as if I had actually purchased the video out cable. Is there such a cab for the touch pro 2? I loaded the enablevideoout.cab from fuze, however, while it does enable that option, no video comes out to the tv, even though I'm using the exact cable...
tv out doesnt work for me either. im not sure why. some people have it working though.
I have the AT&T Tilt 2 and purchased the Tilt video cable. The cable was inexpensive ($15 or so) and works perfectly. I select the TV Out under System and it works perfectly.

you can stream whatever is on your phone to a tv or moniter. it's a great tool for businessmen with presentations, or you could download and stream adult content .
So...is there a cab that would force tv out?
Is the $15 cable the only way to get it to work?
Is there anyone that actually uses this option!!???? I remember back with the fuze that TV out was all the rage...wha happen'????
i can get tv out on my fuze but not on the tilt 2.
i'm using the oem htc tv out cables on my sprint tp2. no hacks or tweaks needed, just plug it in and go. it also has a charging port on the side, so you can stream and charge at the same time. darrenwlsn1 has a thread at ppcgeeks where you can get them for $10 u.s. shipped.
if you have the dongle that came with the tp, check this out http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=91682&highlight=tv*
Thanks...seems as if it will be the blue wire that will meet its maker...

Sorry, telegraph. Since I was the guy the discovered the hack in the first place and have now graduated to a Touch Pro2, I can confirm without a doubt that the registry change the above mentioned cab implements won't make TV Out work with the ipod cables.
You'll either need to cut wires on the dongle or get the OEM TV Out cable for the TP2.
The TV-out option is THE ONLY reason why I got the Touch Pro 2 - here's why...
My in-dash car DVD/Nav system includes a "Video In" (and L, R audio in) jack that will display any video on it's 9" LCD screen, plus play any audio through my stereo system in the car.
Forget Flow TV or Cio digital TV services and subscriptions!
I just connected a Slingbox to my home Tivo TV system, bought the slingplayer app for the touch pro 2, got an unlimited data plan for my TP2, and connected my TP2 to my in-dash DVD system using the HTC video cable.....and now I can watch ANY cable channel I get at home LIVE, PLUS watch any Tivo show I recorded, in stereo, in my car! Soooo sweet Youtube videos look awesome too. Any app that runs on the TP2 can now appear in my dash's screen with full stereo audio.
XM/Sirius radio sucks with it's 64k bitrate quality! So, as a side bonus, both nanogroove and slacker radio apps for the TP2 sound like they use 96-128k bitrate so they sound excellent in the car. I drive around all day and listen to crystal-clear tunes for free, and can skip any I don't like instantly (using slacker radio) or call up ANY song using nanogroove!
Yay!!!!!!!
Sorry to sound like a guy finding his first chest hair, but a gentle squeeze on the dongle allowed it to ever so nicely open up, where I proceeded to cut zee blu wire...tv out works great-now, a question:
Is it just my dongle or are connections to the phone (via the mini usb) somewhat loose? A slight move (even with just headphones) causes static, I remember (fuze) that the connection was snug and the phone (even sideways) would still hold its own with regards to restricting movement.
and that, sirs, is a run on sentence.
Edit: When I do connect the phone to a tv, the screen is Portrait, and so are any movies I play (even though they should be playing landscape)...the only way I get them to turn correctly is by editing hklm/software/htc/h2w and changing a tv out value to 1...after unplugging the cable, I have to go back and change that same value to 0...
I'm sure i'm doing some extra unnecessary step...

That registry entry is what the cab flips back and forth for you. Just install the cab...

Sound turns off when tv is turned off

Hello all,
I have the FTV box going directly to my TV via the HDMI cable. I also have the FTV box going to my receiver via optical cable for audio.
I have the same setup for my cable box. There is no connection from TV to receiver.
In the past, with other devices (Roku, WDTV) I would play some content from Netflix or Amazon prime, but would then turn my TV off - leaving me with just audio. I do this at night because I like to listen to something as I go to sleep.
With the FTV, I have noticed as soon as I change to a different content source on my TV, or if I turn off my TV, the audio from the FTV stops. Does anyone know if there is a way to get around this?
Sounds like CEC HDMI communication between the FTV and your TV. When you turn one device off, the device that receives the signal to turn off tells the other device to turn off or go into standby. Maybe there's a setting in the FTV to turn that feature off? Or, you could probably disable it at the TV. Samsung has a different name for it (AnyNet or some such).

Connect the fire TV via optical out....this will continue to play the audio when you turn the TV off. Have not tried this with ftv but I have a similar situation with my windowshtpc.

Thank you very much. That was it. I disabled it at the TV level. It's called "Power Link" on Panasonic TV's.
It appears I also am having this problem, but my TV does not have an option to turn off the power feature. I remember awhile back someone somewhere saying there was an adapter for the hdmi that helped with this. Anyone have an idea of what it was? Would love to listen to music on this thing and not return it and go back to my old Roku
Sorry - Bit of Necro Posting! Seemed better than starting a new one.
I have pretty much the same issue - have no option on my Samsung TV to disable CEC as it does not support it (confirmed with Samsung).
If it turn off the TV it stops the audio and the youtube app will "crash". i put that in inverted commas as it is a strange sort of crash. the app still functions and will browse the subscriptions/channels ect but will not load the video - i just get the spinning dots. Only a full restart of the device fixes it
Have reset to factory defaults and deleted the apps.
Thinking it is connected to the TV in some way as if i put a HDMI switcher in between, it doesnt happen.
Gen 1 AFTV - latest OS
Sound - Optical out to Samsung Soundbar
Video - HDMI to Samsung LT31D
If anyone has any ideas, i'd be grateful. Happy to supply any info that may be usefull.
Cheers

Can you advise how i would do that - cant see it in settings? I have rooted.
Many thanks
Removal of the CEC daemon process is likely all you need to do.
Mount system partition as read write then remove:
/system/bin/cecdaemon
Then reboot.

[Q] Fire TV Stick switches to wrong HDMI on its own

When I first got the stick I connected it to HDMI-1 on my Panasonic Plasma to do some testing, I later permanently moved it to one of the HDMI ports on my Pioneer receiver. The receiver connects to the TV via HDMI-2 where ARC is. The problem is that when I switch the receiver to the Fire TV input the TV automatically gets switched to HDMI-1 where nothing is connected, this also happens when FireTV gets out of sleep mode. I have to switch the TV back to HDMI-2. I am assuming that the FireTV is doing this via CEC. I have a Chromecast, Roku, SageTV and a PC connected to the receiver and none of them exhibit this behavior.
I rebooted multiple times but id does not help. I can disable CEC on the TV or Receiver but then I loose ARC so that is not an option. Any ideas on how to fix this?

There is a way to disable cec on rooted firetv’s but the easier way to fix this is to completely shut down the whole setup and hopefully the firetv will resync back to the correct input.

Unplugged everything and it seemed to be fixed but the next day it is back to switching my TV to HDMI 1 on its own.

Probably more of an issue with your tv .. possibly receiver. Is there a firmware update for your tv?
cec less adaptor
i had conflict on my Samsung tv with other cec devices and the best way around it i got a cec less adaptor for the hdmi cable plugged into the AFTV this stops the AFTV conflicting with your other devices as thats what it sounds like it is doing like mine was
only downside it will not auto channel switch when waking AFTV from sleep

Yes that would seem logical but the ARC is on HDMI2 so I would have to run an additional cable back to the Receiver. I switched to the FireTV Box and it works fine without interfering with my TV's HDMI inputs. The stick will go to the second TV in the house and if it has an issue there I will do a full reset.
Similar issue here with receiver (Denon X2000) switching to TV input (Samsung UN60F6350) in 1-2 seconds after I manually switch the input to Fire TV (box, not stick). This behavior developed over past 1-2 weeks or so, before I've been using Fire TV with no issues.
After setting HDMI control to "OFF" in receiver's Video settings it stopped switching, so my theory is that somehow my "smart" TV sends activation signal to the receiver and makes it switch. This is similar to any HDMI device starting to play, except in this case looks like TV keeps sending that signal constantly.
A quick fix, but annoying, is to just unplug the HDMI cable from the Fire TV box or Fire stick. I have had these devices for a long time and never had a problem until a few months ago. It is annoying! Every (about 30 minutes...almost like it was on a timer of sorts) time I am watching my DirecTV cable box HDMI input, it will just switch to the HDMI input that the Fire TV box (or Fire TV stick) is on. SO it has to be something that the Amazon box is sending out through the HDMI cable to the TV that causes the HDMI input to change. AMAZON needs to send out an update that eliminates that problem because it HAS TO BE in their software coding. As BIG of a problem as this is, you would think that they would have fixed this already. There are many other streaming boxes out there now that are much better, cheaper, and do not have issues like this. They stand to lose a ton of future dollars if they don't fix this problem. I have invested in 6 boxes for the 6 TV's in my home. They need to do something about this!!

Independent Second Screen

Hey guys.
I just bought a Slimport to HDMI adapter (it is about to arrive) and im wondering if i could use my tablet as a media streaming device to my old (not smart) TV, making use of its big screen.
I was planning to attach it to the HDMI port and reproduce the media as usual, but the problem is i wont be able to turn the tablet's screen off without interrupting the transmission to the TV, right?
So i found out that XPosed Framework has a module called XMultiWindow but im not sure it would fit what im trying to do.
Im new in this so forgive me if it is a trivial question

My Car has an HDMI port hooked up to the screen. What's my best option?

Hey all,
I have a 2012 Acura TL, it has a 720p screen from the factory. There's a mod called NavTool which adds an HDMI port to the stock screen. I just finished installing the module and I now have the new input. However, what's my best option to make a "smart car" type interface? So far I bought a chromecast and set that up, but I'm having major trouble screencasting my M8's screen using a hotspot on my phone. I have a ATT Hotspot which I used to test screen mirroring with, but it's not ideal.
The car has Bluetooth for audio and calls, and normally my phone would connect to this. I'm able to change songs using the wheel controls (forward/reverse/play/pause). With the NavTool addon, the HDMI audio gets routed through my car's AUX input, so when screen casting I need to switch inputs to AUX instead of BT. As far as I know there's no way to keep audio streamed via phone's bluetooth while screen casting.
So right now, what can I do? I have an HTC M8, but I'm thinking of upgrading to either the HTC 10, or the next larger variant of the Nexus. I don't have to stick with chromecast. I can switch to any system at all, I just need ideas as to what would be the best thing to do. I don't mind spending ~$100 to get this system working. I already spend $200 on the HDMI input. Please tell me your ideas, or if you've seen something which I can do, let me know! Thanks!
