New to the M8 scene - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im getting an M8 very shortly on T-Mobile. Ive read topics about unlocking and s off but im still counfused.
My goal is to have an unlocked bootloader, S-OFF, root, TWRP, and CM11.
i thought it would be simple. HTCDev, Firewater, etc.
but now i read more and now my process is
Root, HTCDev, S-OFF, Remove Red Text, Remove Tampered logo, SuperCID, TWRP, CM11
So some questions came up
Is there a way to unlock the bootloader without the red text.
Does Firewater work on all M8s
how do i remove the tampered logo
Thanks in advance!

You just need
HTCdev
Flash TWRP with fastboot
Flash CM11 from TWRP
The rest is optional. Firewater might not workd on newer M8 software, but Sunshine probably will.

Thank you. That helps a ton.

If you are going to S-Off, you don't even need HTCDev.
Download the latest Sunshine, pay $25 and you will be S-Off, no need to root beforehand anymore (I believe the latest version of sunshine takes care of this for you.)
From Sunshine post - Update 1.6
SunShine has been updated and no longer needs your device to be rooted or unlocked before running. SunShine will gain root itself, and unlock/s-off every variant of the m8 currently. Cheers!

[Q] How to S-OFF and ROOT m8 software 3.28.401.7?

Hi, I know that this is a very basic thread and it has been answered before, but I couldn't find a procedure that addresses the 3.28.401.7 software. Can someone please explain to me how to get root access on HTC m8 kitkat (4.4.4 sense 6) software 3.28.401.7 ? Thanks alot
The easy way would probably be to just use Sunshine app. It costs $25 but will do both things for you(and unlock your bootloader too I believe). The app will tell you if it can work or not before you pay for it as well.
Otherwise I would think you could unlock bootloader through htcdev, then flash twrp recovery, which will itself root your phone as part of its install process. You would still need sunshine to s-off though I'm fairly certain.

Sunshine is the only way to s-off.
Rooting is explained above perfectly. ?
I dont think sunshine will root the phone, as I have tried doing sunshine unrooted on 3.28 and it says I have to be rooted in order to actually try the app to see if it can s-off it. I havent rooted my phone and tried sunshine after that, but as i understand it can s-off even the new 3.28 base.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app
Sunshine is for S-Off, not to root the phone.
Have you tried VomerGuides?

Rooting, after unlocking the bootloader is simple, but OP asked about s-off also. ?

[Q] Confused about sunshine

What does sunshine do that HTCDev doesn't do? I'm really very confused.
Sunshine S-off's your phone, as well as unlocking the bootloader. HTCdev unlocks your bootloader but leaves security/signing on (S-on) Also, the method Sunshine uses to unlock your bootloader doesn't trip a factory reset.
You don't typically need to turn security/signing off unless you want to change your CID/MID (to convert your handset to a different region) or go back to an older version of firmware/software.

HTC dev only unlocks the boot loader, sunshine or firewater provides full s off which lifts restrictions to partitions that are normally locked down.
Check the below thread for explanations.

Thank link is invalid.
Also, I have got s-off previously without using this?

So in bootloader (or alternately, adb getvar all) it indicates s-off?
If so, and you didn't do firewater or sunshine, then its factory s-off. Its rare, but I've seen it here from time to time.

Root without HTCDev

I just acquired a used M8 and would like to unlock the bootloader without HTCdev.
I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2475914
Which explains how to do so with S-OFF. I am willing to pay the 25$ for Sunshine, but apparently it requires root. So if I need to root, I need to register at HTCdev either way? What the use of unlocking the bootloader then if HTC already knows?

pretty sure sunshine will s-off and unlock your bootloader for you and will also set temp root whilst it works, give it a try, if it cant do it then you don't pay anyway. http://theroot.ninja/
If your phone is 2nd hand, does it have any warranty left on it, and if not, then why not just unlock via HTC dev, I did it on a brand new M8 3 months ago with 2 years warranty left on it.#, in order to flash a custom recovery, root and run sunshine, just my preferred way of doing it and only 10 mins work for the lot.

Do I need S-OFF to flash Cyanogen Mod on M8

Hey Guys,
On Cyanogen's website it is written that I should have S-OFF on my M8 in order to install their ROM, so it really necessary to have S-OFF?Did any of you guys try to flash one of their Roms having S-OFF?
I can't turn S-OFF because I can't download the firewater exploit file..
Thanks in regards.
You shouldn't need to be S-off just to install an alternate ROM. You do need to have an unlocked bootloader, which Sunshine does as part of its S-off task. However, you can, in many cases, get a bootloader unlock token directly from HTCdev.
Also, Firewater no longer works. Even if you could find the APK, the server it uses is gone. The only way to S-off is Sunshine, which is a paid service from the same developers.

Sunshine is the only way to s-off. Firewater was discontinued in Dec 2014.
You don't need s-off to flash CM. But you will need the current hboot (3.19). Plenty of ways to update hboot and other firmware with s-on.

Need to completely stock my htc one (m8)

My htc one m8 is currently rooted, has S-ON, has InsertCoinEnhanced installed, and has the philz touch recovery. I need it completely back to stock so that I can trade it in for the galaxy s7. Please help, I don't have much computer knowledge and all the guides were saying it needs S-OFF and that I need to use firewater, however its no longer around and SunShine, which replaced it, wants to make my pay for it. What can I do?

Read this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67123738&postcount=7
but before you can proceed with all the steps, you need to relock bootloader first as you have S-On device.
command :
fastboot oem lock
fastboot reboot-bootloader
then proceed with Flash firmware and Install RUU as mentioned in that post.
