[Q] Buy from T-Mobile, HTC, or somewhere else? - T-Mobile HTC One (M8)

I've been with AT&T for the last 2 years (Galaxy S3). Thinking of switching to T-Mobile.
Where should I buy the One M8? Directly from T-Mobile? Or are there factors like price, bloatware, firmware updates, bootloader, carrier logo on the phone, etc. that would make buying an unlocked or developer edition from HTC a better choice? How do all these things work on T-Mobile, and on the One M8 specifically?

Before switching to T-Mobile, make sure they have good coverage in your area. I am currently testing them (again lol). Coverage does seem to be improving. Do you want to finance the phone? If so, then you have to get it through T-Mobile. All carrier versions of the M8 will be bootloader-locked; however, you can have HTC unlock it. I am sure the phone will get updates just has fast as any other carrier. Remember, the unlocked/developer editions will not have Wifi calling, which is very nice.
I too am considering picking up the TMO branded M8 as my developer edition was taking forever to ship from HTC.com.

Remember you don't really get discounts on phones for T-Mobile anymore because there is no contract. You can use the jump thing they offer which is pretty good for those who like to switch phones every 6 months. But personally, I would find a used one or refurbished one rather than paying full price. But beware of scammers with that route.
However with the price you'll pay with T-Mobile and doing the "jump" you would probably still save money lol.

The AT&T and international M8 are not compatible with T-Mobile 3G network.
So, if you want to use it with T-mobile, you need to buy it from them.

true and false at the same time. It depends if the area you live in has been reframed. If they have LTE then the HSPA+ network is PCS1900 and not AWS. Best to check the area and find out if it's been reframed or not.

T-Mobile jump is a scam, you have to pay off 50% of the cost and you don't get to keep it, then you get new phone.

just like buying a phone trying to sell it to get back 50%+ of the money around the same time most people would turn in during jump? You'll be stuck on the same boat. Either T-mobile does the leg work for you or you do it yourself. Either way seems the same to me. Since I am accident prone Jump is actually worth the money for me, and also when I am ready to change devices I don't have to find ways and deal with people to sell a phone to buy a phone.

I got mine through TMO even though I don't use them(I'm on straight talk). They are charging pretty close to the going rate for the phone(even with the interest added in they're not taking you to the cleaners too bad) so it's not a bad deal if you don't wanna go out of pocket all the money at once. The one I got was able to be s-off and thus simunlocked for free so that worked out beautifully for me.
My friend also got one(he is the one who is on TMO) and it's been great for him as well. We've both had good reception with it.

Give it 4 months and you'll be lucky to get $300. Also you probably be trying to sell the phone for weeks to months at $460. Been there done that.

Obviously i was not talking about the original jump. The original jump was great and that's is why T-Mobile got rid of it because it was too good of a deal for consumers.
Also, the original jump is not available now is it? No, it is not

whats the deal with t-mobile not saying a word about the new galaxy nexus

It absolutely blows my mind every day that goes by and we dont hear anything about the hspa+ galaxy nexus being offered from tmo.
with the popularity of the nexus one and nexus s I find it soo hard to believe that the only way us tmo users can get one is to spend $700+ by shipping one overseas.
plus knowing that most reviewers recieved a galaxy nexus with a tmo simcard in it, the [email protected] review phones came with a tmo simcard. and tmo hasnt said one freaking word about it.
I have my money for it waiting but my patience is slipping away. bought a galaxy s 2 from tmo and loved it but got down to the last day of the 14 day return period and got spooked cause some speculation hit the news about the galaxy nexus hitting our shores. but that didnt happen so im fighting the urge to call one of the craigsL sellers and pick up another new galaxy s 2 for $380. just so disgested everytime i load up the tmonews site and nothing has been whispered about tmo dropped a rumered release date.
anyone else here feel this way?
was thinking the same thing, but i just ordered over the weekend.
i'm not going to wait for tmobile to carry it.
at least with the penta band, if att does indeed acquire tmobile, i'll be good to go.
I felt that way, then I just bought one. Verizon locked exclusivity for 60 days or so and it is only $50 more to buy it overseas than from T-Mobile outright. (If the phone is priced like Verizon's version)
The only downside is that nobody has screen protectors in my locality yet. The T-mobile reps sure loved seeing the phone though.

I wonder when Verizon's exclusivity clause ends for the GN?
I'm just guessing here, but with an exclusivity, I would think the other carriers are not allowed to go bragging that they'll have it in XX days.
Or maybe they aren't going to carry it at all. I've been with TMO for a while, and I get the feeling that they just dont give a **** anymore

Just order the Zagg for it. www.zagg.com
T mobile won't advertise as it only benefits Verizon for now.
Shouldn't matter that much on T-Mobile anyway since you are given the option of not paying for a phone subsidy. So the only premium you end up paying is for importing it. If you're not on a value/even more plus plan, switch and just buy the phone.

Not really, even if T-Mobile is acquired by ATT, which it won't, ATT will keep the T-Mobile cell towers running, these towers are very expensive. I don't think current T-mobile users with 1700mhz ban phone will lose their HSPA over night in that scenario. Besides ATT have 3G and LTE plans, Nexus users can still use the 3G plan. I personally don't think its detrimental in the case you can't stream HD video of Justin Bebier at 20mbps with your Nexus, while 6mbps could get you by. Either way you are getting your chains yanked since you don't save any money opting for the slower 3G speed from their data plan.

Am I crazy...

Im considering leaving Verizon and my unlimited Data plan behind for AT&T. Am I crazy? I think of it like this.... We have more options with GSM. Google will sell the Nexus from now on for a no contract price cheaper than the stores. Verizon will probably never see another Nexus. If we like a phone that is ether not coming to the states or coming 6 months later we can still buy one.
Trading one tyrant for another.
Your call. I'd go contract free before doing such a thing.

Unless the coverage is poor in your area I would recommend T-Mobile over AT&T. AT&T is a rather awful carrier in more ways than I'd like to go into right now. Either way, while Verizon has incredible coverage I never recommend using a CDMA network of any kind, much less Verizon, but that is my own personal opinion.

GSM all the way. I much prefer the flexibility of SIM cards to..well..hard programming into the phone. There's something nice about being able to totally skip your carrier when you want to change phones.
For example, I got sick of my old HTC Legend. Even though I was only a year into my contract, I got a second hand Xperia Play, swap the sim, boom boom done. A year later I'm due for an upgrade and I'm not even sick of my phone. No matter, hello Nexus!

Yeah it's new. Came with the new shared everything plans. And apparently they're also going to start tacking on a 40 dollar per month service fee for smartphones as well. Really lame.
In my opinion, I'm really happy with ATT. Yeah they're more expensive than TMobile, but their coverage is damn good and my hspa+ speeds are actually faster than VZW's lte where I live. It really depends on your area. But I definitely suggest either ATT or TMobile purely for the gsm phones. Means you can use international versions as well.

Yeah I forgot about that. I haven't looked at the new pricing at all, just read articles about it. Do you by chance know if the shared plans are cheaper overall for say a family of 4 with smartphones on the shared plan vs an old plan where they all have like 30 per month individual data plans? Seems to me like it wouldn't be much of a stretch for a carrier to pull some BS like that nowadays. Haha.

[Q] Dev Edition or Unlocked Version or Carrier Version?

Hello, After finally getting to see the M8 I'm ready to order. I didn't get around to the M7 and have regretted it. I'm kind of stuck at which one I should get. I have AT&T service if it matters. I like to be able to flash roms and sometimes tinker with my own themes etc. Which should I get? Dev edition? I'm not a dev but have always ended up unlocking my bootloaders even when I did nothing with it. I just do it to be doing it. Unlocked? It's nice to know I can take my ball and go play elsewhere when it suits me. Both of these options are the same price so I'm leaning toward Dev edition which is already unlocked. I know I really don't want a carrier phone but I can get it for $199 from AT&T. I have no plans to leave AT&T since they have the best coverage for my area. I just don't like being under contract and HATE carrier branding in and on my devices. Which version is more likely to be supported by updates and roms etc? Any thoughts or opinions are much appreciated.
If you're eligible for an upgrade, then I'd save the $450 and go for the AT&T model. You can unlock the bootloader through HTC Dev, and those are pretty nice savings. Wait to buy a full price phone until next year and use your upgrade while you have it.
Sent from my iPhone 5s using Tapatalk
The M7 Dev Edtion got updates pretty quick, I think faster than the GPE did a couple of times. Taking the upgrade depends on what plan you are on. For me, I am no contract Mobile Share so 2 year wont work, it will make the access fee $25 instead of $15. And the ATT Next ends up costing more for the phone than to buy it outright. I too want the M8, but I can't justify the price vs what happens when I sell it. Too big of a hit I am going to wait this time until the used market starts dropping these phones.
ATT next costs more and they take your phone when you get a new one. It's pretty bad

It cost more if you're on anything smaller than 10gb or some legacy plan. Otherwise its cheaper than a 2 year contract on those same plans. Also, just pay the phone off before you upgrade and we don't take it back.
Oh really? Then it's not so bad. I though I read in the T&Cs and some articles that they took your phone regardless of if you paid it off or not.

I too have this question. What is the difference between the developer edition and the unlocked one. I'm not sure if this matters, but i'm currently living outside the US.. Are both of these alright for international use?
Once I get mine, I'm prob going to end up trying out CM and a few other roms.. and maybe switch between that and sense if i like it. So which one would you recommend? unlocked or dev edition? please explain why.
Doesn't matter. Dev comes bootloader unlocked from the factory, Unlocked you have to do on HTC Dev. I'd get the Dev as it's the same price and you don't have to do anything to unlock it.
Everything else is identical.

Just went through the same thing. Samsung's help was just about worthless. I was continually told Samsung doesn't sell phones directly. Finally went through the business department. Because the phone was shown on their site but not available as of 8-7-15, the business rep first tried calling the warehouse to see if anyone knew if it would be available in the future. He got no definite answer. He was going to send an email to corporate and let me know when he received a reply. I was told it may take a week for an answer. The issue may be that because the Note 5 was soon coming they may not restock. My problem is that from I can see from Note 5 leaks, the phone may not have the features I want, ie. removable battery and sd card. Because I like my Note 4 and it has a verifiable good root for the developers edition, I was going in that direction. Two months ago, I had a chance to buy the de phone from Samsung. I was certain that the team at xda would get root and held off. Boy am I sorry for not buying when it was available. Well, we can only hope that our team here will get this working on our retail versions.
I'm looking at selling off my mint DE version since I'm leaving my Unlimited Verizon account. Is Swappa still a good way to get the most resale for now a "unicorn" like the VZ Note 4 DE? Was considering that or eBay, but worried about eBay hassles. I'll then pick up a T-Mobile Note 4 to put on Cricket.

I definitely would not buy the Verizon one with the expectation of using it on any carrier besides verizon.

Why wouldn't you buy a "Verizon version with expectation of using it on another carrier"?
I bought a Verizon version last night from Best Buy (im not really worried about unlocking the bootloader at this point. Been doing it for years lol ) and put my T-Mobile sim card in and it worked immediately.
All these Google Pixel phones are carrier unlocked. Every single one. The only difference is that the Verizon version currently cannot be Bootloader unlocked, but I'm sure it will someday.
I would say buy from google if you really want to have an unlocked bootloader. I wont say it will never be unlocked but i think there will be very few working on it for the simple fact that you can buy an unlocked version. I would have bought it from google but it was more cost effective for me to buy it from Verizon.
Honest opinion = It is highly unlikely!
Most likely not since there is an google verison that comes with an unlocked bootloader for the same price.
I'm with verizon but bought it from the Google store. I am thinking about switching carriers sometime soon so I don't want to be stuck with monthly payments from Verizon on a device that won't be used on their carrier. That's why I did Google finance. Plus I already give too much money to Verizon each month. Bootloader being unlocked or not doesn't bother me but some people will want root and one day I may root and I want that option.
Yeahci will just wait till its available again. I'm on tmobile and I will never leave. Lol I only pay 50$ for unlimited everything

Same here. My wife is on Verizon and I looked at adding a line. If I buy it outright (pixel xl) I don't get the big credit for my V10, only fair market value and I don't get the free data bump either. At the end of the day, staying with T-Mobile with unlimited data just makes sense

Yeah man ilove being grandfather in. I scanned a copy of my original contract, and a few times they tried to switch my plans to the new jump and I was like nope I have a SIGNED contract. Lol LOVE IT!! also I can't get throttle after using 20+ gigs of data.
Never buy a phone for what it MIGHT do in the future.
If you need root/unlocked bootloader buy a phone that already has that.

So I will let the hypedye down now I'll just stick to 7.1.1 on the 6p. And than I'll sell my 6p and op3 to buy the xl in the coming months.
It seems there are too many Verizon models running around now that somehow came with an unlockable bootloader.... makes me think there is a better chance at the devs finding a way. Mostly just a hunch but....

Will an at&t sim in verizon model prevent software updates?
