3rd Party Camera Apps - Verizon HTC One (M7)

Knowing that the week part of this phone is the camera (beyond low light photography)...
Is it better with third-party camera apps?

what does vignette do that the stock camera can't? It has lots of manual settings and has filters.
Also, I think someone said that 3rd party camera apps lower the resolution to 3.2mp.

Weak?
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using xda app-developers app

I purchased Camera Zoom FX during one of those Google sales, never used it on the S3 but like you I've not been entirely satisfied with the camera on this phone. I have tried it and keep going back and forth from it to stock. I have also tried Camera JB+, Camera Pro, HDR Camera+, Vignette and a few others. Ultra-pixel aside, it is still just 4 megapixel. though I have read that that detail alone does not mean that the camera is superior or inferior. I am by no means an expert in photography, probably don't qualify as amateur. but I know there is a difference however slight between the S3 and this one. BTW, I have still not determined if a 3rd party is better.

Mine certainly seems weak. I can't seem to get it to focus on what I'm trying to get it to focus on. My kid is holding a teddy bear, I click on her face.. it grabs focus on the bear. Every once in a while it'll nail focus and get a beautiful shot but I have the issue with the screen turning red in low light too. So maybe it's the photo sensor or a firmware thing. I'm praying it's firmware because I obviously don't want a replacement device because I'll lose S-OFF.
Verizon, naturally, is no help. "Never heard of it. HTC hasn't told us anything about it. Deal with them." ... So it could just be a 'some devices' kind of thing.. but I can understand why some might think the camera is weak. Coming from an iPhone 5, which took fantastic pictures, I've been very disappointed to say the least. Obviously, YMMV.
And since I'm sure at least someone is thinking 'go back to iPhone then', I'll add. Those shots I mentioned where focus is nailed.. the pictures are great. This camera has potential. I'M just not getting the results yet.

I just got my phone replaced because my camera couldn't focus on anything further than 3 feet away. The majority of my pictures were blurry and unusable, so I went to Verizon and a rep compared it to their floor model and agreed with me. Got it replaced (although they sent me a DNA at first...) and am loving the camera now. Yea the zoom is weak, but I don't mind.

And OP, you're not crazy. But help is on the way...

Google "htc one camera issues" .. It appears those pleased with the camera are in the gross minority.. but that's lucky for them.
One of the blurbs from the article: "In fact a poll was taken recently where 328/388 users said “Yes” to their HTC One having camera problems like the one described above." For the record, that issue was the covering the lens and seeing your screen go red or blue or purple.

Fyi we can install the camera from the Google edition phones via this link

I've installed it and I'm getting nice pictures with the limited testing I did.
It's also got the 'photosphere' which I haven't tried but from what I read it's pretty cool sounding
Sidenote, my other half got the iPhone 5S and I played with the camera for over an hour taking pictures around the house and outside of my dogs... I wish I could rip the camera out of the 5S and put it in my HTC One...it's that good :-/

I'll agree with some but in the end people who don't have problems won't be looking for polls to complain. Same way to put a bias on stats by making sure you're only getting the people who will prove your point. Not saying that its great but for my person use it beats anything I've used. You can prove anything right or wrong for the main reason that the vocal ones are almost always the ones with issues.

Anyone able to get their photosphere pictures to stitch together properly with the GPE camera app? Mine are totally jacked! The stitching cuts out big parts of the pictures.

Blue image is the HTC Camera app, The other is Vignette... Vignette is extremely flexible, but not at all easy to use...I like it's filters. But, by and large, I am getting great shots with the stock app...I really hope that update fixes the purple/blue issues because it obviously is a software issue. If Vignette can get it right, then HTC should be able to...
I did not like the results of the google edition camera...too bright and oversaturated...

G2 Front facing camera?

Ok so I was taking a really good look at my g2 using my nexus one led torch.
In the top left corner is a sensor and another odd looking thing.
To me and a few other people I have showed it to it looks like a camera.
I compared it to the sensors on my nexus one and it looks more like a camera than any type of sensor.
I know it doesn't mention anything about a camera in the specs
but just like my nexus one updates unlocked new features that were already there.
the hardware already existed.
I'm not saying I am right
I just want other people to take a good look at it and give your opinion.
If it is a camera then that would definitely make the g2 the phone for me
You have a proximity sensor as well as a light sensor.

Do you actually have a g2?
you are right the phone does obviously have both the proximity and light sensors
but like I mentioned so does my nexus and this looks nothing like either of those 2
if you are right then I believe the camera looking one would be the light sensor. And that would be one hell of a light sensor
But just a note the leds are nicely hidden under the speaker grill and another sensor could be as well.
I just don't want to rule it out just yet
unless you yourself have a g2 that you have examined please don't make comments
i would love to believe that T-mobile hid this surprise from us. Even as far as to not even include it in the specs for the phone anywhere but I really don't think they would. It would also make the phone to much competition for the upcoming myTouch HD which I believe is gonna be even more expensive than the G2 was.
i have to admit it does kinda look like a little camera but that is most definately just the 2 stated sensors. The whole is wayyy to small to be a camera and there was already a tear down of this phone with nothing stating it had a front facing camera. our hopes are crushed :'(

i agree, the myTouch plastic case just doesnt do it for me, it makes me feel like a child
you guys DO know that desire HD has a 4.3" screen as MyTouch HD has a 3.8" screen.... completely different devices.
I'd say its a variant of HTC lexicon (verizon phone) without the keyboard.
It does look a little like a cam but its smaller than all the other FFCs I've seen on other phones so I'm pretty sure its just one of the sensors
The HTC website has specs up for the Desire HD. Its a different phone from the mytouch.

The 2 front facing holes were one of the first things I noticed.
The bottom hole looks like it could be a low res camera,
I would open it up to confirm, but im not sure im going to keep the phone so I dont want to void my warranty just yet.
They aren't going to hide something that people WANT.
They're sensors, nothing more.

Camera quality (lack of)

Who has got the GN and is happy with the camera quality.
I took the plunge on this phone based on some sample pics i had seen but my first pics are awful. My htc desire took much better pics, in fact my Nokia N97 was better than this.
I took some pics today but it was quite dull but the pics came out wishy washy and out of focus.
Will the camera be improved with an update? Or am I stuck with it? I was going to sell my previous phone the S2 but I think I might hold fire a couple of weeks because i can't live with this.
Otherwise the Nexus seems great.
its the NexusOne camera
Can you post some of the pictures you took up please?
Look ate these, not good. :-(
Very bad... any other shot from anyone?
Maybe without resizing them...
That definitely looks like the photographer's fault. The first picture clearly has motion blur, and the second one is poorly focused.
Are you sure you're tapping the screen to focus before taking the picture?
low light and (to be fair) not the most photogenic of subjects ....
much better than my HTC Desire would have managed.
please note i dont claim to be a photographer
Yes tried to tap to focus but if anything, this makes it worse.
i noticed much better results using the tap to focus .....

Yes i've found one - it's Nikon D3100. Now i'll try seriously. Google has damn good coders and if it was posible to simply write better camera app they've had it done already. No offence for other developers.
If camera is very important for you shall get some other phone with better camera, it isn't hard to find one. Or buy a proper DSLR camera (yes, i'd be fruity happy if they were as compact as mibile phones).

You could hit the middle ground and get a Micro 4/3 camera. That's my choice.
But really, the GNex doesn't take awful photos. Compose properly and take 2sec and you'll get a good enough photo for things you're taking pictures of with a phone (posting to Facebook, G+, Twitter, etc.).

Yes, but don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that GNex has bad camera. It's just not as good as some others. And those people who actually need a good camera on their smartphones, usually going trough few reviews before buying it.
Martonikaj> absolutely agree with you, but i'm not one of those who complaining about GNex camera. I saw sample pictures/videos before i bought this phone and even more to that - take a look at my signature (the last three owned phones)
From my experience with this camera so far.
1) If you have a good light source, your fine.
2) For indoor shots, they work best when the light source is coming from behind you. Cuts down the pixelation.
3) Tap the screen at the focus point you want.
4) For night shots, I find they work best when you disable the flash. Don't use night scene mode, never had much luck with that.
Outdoor this camera can take some great shots, but indoors you have to handle it a certain way.
I was pretty sure when I decided on the nexus that the camera was going to be the weak spot. I just loved that it was pure Android. I've tried camera fx and have noticed a slightly better quality picture but I'm just not loving the interface. I was hoping someone had tried a camera app that I hadn't and liked it. I really liked the camera on my old HTC incredible but that was the only thing better than my nexus.

Camera Question

So a while back I was using the HTC One S. I got it for the camera. I prefer samsung, for the most part, and have gone from a vibrant to galaxy s 4g to galaxy s 2. The only reason I did not go to the galaxy s 3 originally was because I needed a better camera. I wound up having to sell my HTC One s for some cash, and now I have the change to get a phone again, I am stuck, once again, between the one s and the s3. Personally, I would like to wait for the note 2, but I don't have the time. I am stuck with a basic flip phone right now, and while i don't mind using a flip phone, I have to have something for tethering with my tablet while I am work. So that is the rock and a hard place. Any phone I buy is going to be a few hundred bucks anyways, so I would rather go another hundred or two more and get the one s or s3.
Personally, the One S was great with the Axiom ROM. The battery lasted forever, and it had great extra features.
However, the s3 is still my preferred choice because of the bigger screen, the 720p, svoice, voice actions, and many other things. Not to mention the extra compatibility with my note 10.1 tablet.
My only real issue here, admidst all my rambling, is the camera. I know the HTC One S has an f/2.0 aperture, and the s3 has a f/2..6 aperture which makes a difference (although some people report the aperture as f/2.4)...my concern is how people actually like the photos and video. Ive noticed some washed out looks compared to the one s. I know the f/2.6 will give better depth vs the f/2.0, but thats about the end of the benefits.
My main concern is quality of photos/videos, and quickness of the picture. I have two young boys and I want to be able to snap a photo that is clear and of good quality, at a moments notice without having to worry about missing it or getting a blurry shot.
Any comments or thoughts on this would be helpful.

If the cam is your main concern, I think you will be happy either way. There may be a difference side by side but if you're not ccomparing the two like that you probably wouldn't care either way.
While some may have had issues with the camera I would say the vast majority have not.
There are a number of things that could cause pic problems here. Lots of people are running jb leaked firmware. Lots are using the cam from the note2. I seem to remember a few had problems fixed by updating the cam firmware...
But like I said, I doubt you'd be dissatisfied with the gs3. I dont know how theyd compare side by side but unless you're doing just that I dont think you'd notice or care.

Ive seen plenty of camera shot examples, but pretty much all (most, but not all) are from still photos are "posed" shots. It takes good pictures, and I think my only issue is its a little washed out vs the One S. However, I can deal with that. My biggest question is lag from button press to picture taken.
So, how much lag is there in taking a picture? If I wanted to take a picture right when somewhat hit the water diving off a diving board, or of my cat jumping from fence pole to fence pole and wanted a shot right in the middle between two poles, etc....how easy would it be? With the One S I could get pretty much zero lag. if I hit the capture button its taken the picture right then, and I can click the capture button over and over and over in rapid succession (not burst mode) and take multiple pictures. I really want the GS3 over the One S for other reasons, but need the camera to be on the same level.
So how quick does it take a picture when the button is pressed?...and how quickly does it recover to take another picture?
I find it to be quite quick on all accounts. Hasn't caused me any issues as of yet. Also, there is a feature where you can just record video and then capture the pics you want from the video.
Have you seen the commercial with the hikers and the goat?
The only complaint I have about the camera is the lack of hardware buttons for it. But I can deal with that.

Thanks for the feedback.
Its rather important to be quick on the camera trigger. Even with the zero lag of the One S I did miss some things. I have my two boys and they can be making a face or doing a little dance to their favorite tv show and I want to capture it, but the moment may just last a few seconds, and I need a quick trigger finger. So I dont want to have to focus and then 'click'. I want to hit and click at the same time.
Right now, however, I am stuck my an LG Mytouch Q and definitely not the best in the camera department. lol
Yeah I hear you on wanting to be able to get that quick shot. Its the msin reason I miss the csm button. But theres also a motion setting where you tap and hold on lock screen whil rotating to landscape takes you straight to the camera. I just added to my lockscreen shortcuts. Auto focus is pretty good too btw.
Dont forget you can always get the S3 and try it for 14 days. If it doesn't meet your needs return it and get the One S.

Thats where my problem lies. I work for T-Mobile. Mind you everything I do here is personal and not affiliated with my tmobile employment, but I work for them, and I know just about everything there is to know about the phones, but because I have not had a chance to really test shutter lag on the phone, I dont know if it meets my needs. I am VERY picky. I don't work in a retail store or anything so I dont deal with the phones in my hand daily.
...and because I work for the company, I do not get a buyers remorse period on my purchases. Once I order it, give or take a couple of exceptions to the rule, its mine. So while I can tell you about every wifi share options, every motion and voice control, and so on, I dont know for sure if the camera lag will be a problem in practical use because I do not have the phone physically with me. ..and when I did have the phone physically with me...I never tested it cause I either had my one s or was not in the mindset of having to buy a phone lol. I will probably get a chance to check out a demo model tomorrow when I head in to work, but I was trying to get it ordered over the weekend, so it would start processing my order. Our order system is different and the sooner the better.

IMHO the Galaxy S3 takes the best pics I have ever taken with a phone. See for yourself. I am attaching two pics of a sunset/day-time at Vanderbilt Beach, Florida. Rarely have I been disappointed with the quality of the pics. At least for me, they almost always turn out perfect. I highly recommend the Galaxy S3. Even in low-light situations, you still get a great pic.
Well 1) it's a camera phone and 2) ymmv. There isn't more "lag" than a cheap point and shoot but this isn't a dslr, it's a phone. It's going to come down to to you and each unique situation.

Upgrade camera sensor

What's the chances of installing the camera sensor from a Desire 816 or an M8 ultra to get a 13mp camera rather than the 4mp? They obviously work with sense 6, but will they fit?
Let's say it, would you be tempted?

Lol, why would you do that. HTC isn't stupid, they wouldn't put better camera in midranger than in flagship.
For my purpouses, camera is great. Night photos are the best. Daily are sometimes overexposed, but play a little with settings and they won't be. Pictures are good even on the monitor screen.
I would say chances are less than zero. Even if it was the same ribbon cable pinout, there's no way it's the same physical footprint so it wouldn't fit, and the software would have no idea how to talk to it. You have a better chance of your phone sprouting legs.

It was once said to be impossible to split an atom... I don't know if you've ever check out some of the homebrew electronics sites & forums, but I have seen more unbelievably amazing things than soldering a cmos onto a board. While it may be highly impractical, improbable even, few things are impossible.

You could solder a Subaru onto the side of the phone too, it doesn't mean it can drive. There's more to these things than a little fun with a soldering iron.
Given enough time, ambition, and access to the full source of everything involved (kernel, drivers), I'm sure it's POSSIBLE. But no one is going to do it -- that's the part that has zero percent chance of happening. For that amount of effort and time just buy a different phone that suits you better, or wait a year.
Crikey I'm not being funny but what's the big hang up with m8 camera, it's a phone for crying out loud? There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. It takes perfectly good photos. Really if you need a top notch camera go and buy one that is designed for the job.
It is still funny to me, how people think the bigger number is always better.
13 mediocre mega pixels vs 4 excellent mega pixels. I prefer a camera that can actually handle different lighting conditions like the M8. I had an S5 for 2 days before returning it. The camera wasn't that great. I prefer the M8 .
It is sad that ignorant people can stifle real innovation with such blind devotion to bigger numbers. That's why Samsung does so well, they keep hyping numbers in a cheap phone and people buy it.

Impossible :good:
It's not impossible I've done it! ! I've also constructed a rocket and lunar lander from egg boxes and managed to fly to the moon and spend the night there. Just got back to see this post! I'll post some pictures I took with the modified m8 in a while, they're absolutely cracking! If anyone else wants the mod done on there m8 off a trip to the moon send me a check for £500 and some solder oh and some egg boxes.
