UART Output - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Android Development

Back in the days when I was more adventurous with my Infuse 4g, I put together a little project board that allows me to specify resistances between pins 4 and 5 of a Micro-B USB cable. This allowed me to force my phone into Car Dock mode, or act as a USB JIG (for Triangle-Away purposes), or even connect to the phone using UART. I have a TTL 3.3v level conversion on the other end (a nice little FTDI breakout board that provides a USB serial port), and that makes it simple to capture the output of UART while the phone boots. I’ve used this board on my Infuse, my Galaxy S2, and now my new Galaxy S4.
To get it to work this time, I had to connect the RxD, TxD, VCC and GND wires up like usual to the FTDI breakout board, but I had to attach the 619k resistance at a specific timing. Here’s the order:
Unplug battery
Attach MicroB cable to phone
Attach the 4 wires above (easy for me, with dip switches for each)
Attach battery
Start Putty
Attach 619k resistance between 4th/5th pins.
Watch the magic
Attached is the UART output from this. Many thanks to AdamOutler and his help with the previous generations of Samsung devices. Hope this somehow helps in the efforts to obtain root. Let me know if there's anything special you'd like me to try.

I've been trying various resistances, and I can't seem to get to an SBL prompt. I'm wondering if this is because the bootloader is locked? If anyone has different results, please let us know how you did it. (thanks)

Any way I could get someone with some wiring experience to check out what we've got going on with the Samsung Infuse car dock on this thread? Trying to figure out why the Infuse car dock worked on the Skyrocket and SIII for me personally, but not the S4 - won't put it in car dock mode and won't charge the device.... if someone knew where the wires were supposed to be run, I have a spare base with a plug on it that's not attached to the mount that I can hack up, provided this isn't something too intense for me to get involved in! I can do a good bit of customizing when it comes to cars and car electronics, but I don't have all the cool tools it sounds like some of you have!

Well damn, I'm not the only one scratching their heads at this then, that's kind of good news! Thank you for testing, and you're right, I think once we have a little more answers, we'll be on to something here for sure!

I, too still have jig from GS2 day. it works with GS4 :laugh:

So I ended up ordered the iBolt xProDock from Amazon, don't worry about replying to the PM I send you Aou since we really don't have any testing to do on the iBolt or modifying to do on the Infuse dock - it is dead and I don't think I'm prepared to even try and revive it!

Sorry to "necro" but I need more info on this. If you connect the 619K resistor before power-on won't it work? What are the settings for baudrate, error checking etc.??

[Q] Pogo pins on the side, what are they for?

Any clue what kind of device\dock the galaxy nexus will be able to connect to with those three metal connectors on the side of the phone?

Probably the dock have MicroUSB, Audio 3.5", and HDMI output.
hum with the all in one os I hope this means that docking your galaxy nexus to a tv makes it run like a google tv and that we can get a padphone-like accessory. One of the tings I love about android is there is virtually no reason for me to dock my phone to my computer, I can do 99% of the things I want over data, wifi or bluetooth (most of it without any need for me to interact with the device)... it would be a shame if they put those pins there just for that.
The Pogo Pins are for a Docking Station.

I hope there's Car dock as well as the Pogo desk dock - just like the Nexus One.
only problem is... that in the presentation it docked on the hand side of the phone. But the pogo connections are shown to be on the right hand side of the phone where the power button is.

What the hell is going on there? I'm figuring the dock at the time of launch was fictional and 3d generated and they overlooked this mistake.
As it stands having the pogo connection points on the right hand side is kind of dumb, as it orientates the device in landscape in the opposite direction to pretty much every single other landscape dock on the market.
Not only that if the phone does dock on the right hand side it will cover up the power button, which in most android phones is what powers up the touch screen. So they must have a solution there, I imagine it will just mean the screen will never turn off.
Really hope they sort this out properly, as this is why i have hung on to my N1 for so long, and I've been hang out for a next gen, 'wireless' charged phone.

I am convinced this is it. Pogo pins and the notch out for the power button. Its exactly like in the Galaxy launch, but minus the dodgy 3D/photoshop render. It now docks on the right hand side, as expected from the placement of the pogo plugs.

Need this cable: Micro USB to 3.5mm & USB splitter

Dear awesome community,
For the past month or more I've been trying to find a place where they sell Mirco-USB to 3.5mm/USB cables, but I have come to no success whatsoever!
Is such cable impossible to make? Or am I just looking in the wrong places.
Check out the attached picture that I've created to show what I need and mean.
It looks simple, right? Now, I would love to get one of these at any price.

Well, instead of having two wires coming out of my Note (Top and bottom) while I'm driving, a cable like this well have only one wire coming out from under the phone, cutting on clutter and annoying wires.

That's totally proprietary. The phone that that is made for probably doesn't even have a 3.5mm jack.

Well.. sorry to be a troll. However, you started this thread conveniently assuming that Headphone output through MicroUSB port of Note will work? Its not an HTC phone which has headset support.
May I know the reason for your ASSUMPTION that it would work even if you get the cable?
Your best bet for a single plug into your phone would probably be to use an MHL>HDMI adapter, and then get another adapter to convert from HDMI audio to 3.5mm.
That would be rather clunky though. HDMI > Anything (that isn't DVI) converters are going to run you at least about $40 for a start, and they aren't small either (probably not much smaller than the phone itself .) And they are externally-powered, so you'd need to provide power to both the MHL dongle and the HDMI converter, so it'd be super untidy.
You could do it though.
But you're probably better off using Bluetooth.

My assumption comes from the fact that there is a "docking" option in the system settings of the Galaxy Note, meaning that there is support for docking stations and probably audio output for them.
I'm not saying that the Note is the only and first phone to have it, I'm just wondering if there are such cables out there and if such thing possible to be made through Micro USB.
I had an iPhone almost 2 years ago and such cable was available easily and it did really help in my car setup, and since the Note has the same slot setup of my old iPhone I would really like to know if a cable like that is somewhere out there.

...it clearly shows a "speaker line out" socket in one of the photos, with only one connector (i.e. the micro USB connector) attaching to the phone.
So it is most certainly possible.
Hmmm, the both the official desktop dock and car dock have a 3.5mm audio out. It seems unlikely that there would be a USB DAC in the docks themselves, which suggests that analogue audio is being piped out the microUSB port on the phone itself.
Of course, the OP could just buy the official car dock to get nice tidy cabling...

Very Interested in this as well. OEM dock wont work with a case. So this would be a great alternative paired with a car cradle such as this.

It is obviously possible as the destop & car dock do this.
The only way is, for someone with some electronics knowledge to pull one of these apart to see how its done. It would be interesting to see if it is straight audio out, or if there is a "Digital to Analogue Converter in there"

This might do the trick in the unlikely case that Note's microusb outputs audio. Tough I'm really interested in knowing for sure if the Galaxy Note microusb pumps line level audio.
Judging by the price of the desktop dock i wouldn't bet my money on the idea that it has not a dac. I

DIY Car mount + Question about pogo pins

It seems pretty easy and do-able. I don't own a Galaxy Nexus but I plan to get one soon. My biggest issue with the phone is the utter lack of car docks available (especially in Canada)... So this is my backup and I'll probably end up making one of these.
Now my question: I'm not particularly experienced with wiring and stuff, but I'm capable of doing the work. Would anyone have any ideas to incorporate the pogo pins neatly into something like this?
I haven't seen any tutorials so far, but I read you'd need some kind of microcontroller?

Why not just buy a Universal Car Mount For a cell phone?

Because they're big and atrocious looking. To me this is a more elegant solution that 's easy enough to do. I was just sharing it, and wondering about the possibilities of wiring for the pogo pins.

Why not just buy a NFC sticker which you put on the dock, then it can trigger what actions you want when you dock it. Unless you are trying to skip plugging in a power cord.

Design Intents are as follows:
1) A case for housing the inductive coil/wiring
This just requires compatible cases with necessary clearance for the inductive coil and wiring to the male micro usb. Cases with oversized bumpers would be best since they will keep drops from damaging the micro usb plug that will be sticking out of the bottom of the phone. This may not be ideal so if anyone is decent and making plastic molds maybe we could come up with an attachment to a case.
2)NO Hard wiring inside/to the phone
This involves using low profile male mirco USB type B connectors, like this, and mounting and wiring to the case. This will keep your plug always covered and keep you from trying to charge your phone with both inductive and regular usb to the wall/pc. The main design issue here is protecting the male connector to the phone. Suggest usb connectors, wiring, how to boost the amperage, does the palm pre coil protect from over voltage, etc.
3)A car kit.
I will start with my car, A nissan sentra SR, for the car kit. Others are encouraged to come up/share your solutions as well! This should be a hard wired solution using the palm pre/pixi round touchstone dock. Kind of like a dash mount. I think the magnet should hold the phone ok being that my car isn't one of the most powerful things on the planet but for you hot rodders out there keep that possible issue in mind.

Regarding the thread, this would be hardware development which i believe belongs in the general section. As for the idea, it seems like as long as its not too bulky most users wouldn't mind if it extended battery life substantially like 24 hours or more. Could make you rich with over 9.million sgsIII owners. But Im pretty sure there are already many types of chargers on the market so unless i missed something perhaps you should submit this to a patent office so no one steals the idea or design. Just my two cents dinner no one else has posted. But ya not software development so I would move three thread before you get flamed too bad.

I'm game! I tried doing it myself but I could only find the one spot on the USB plug to hook up to. I opted but to do it because there was some massive dismantling and soldering I would've had to do. I've still got the parts ready for when someone smarter than me figures out an easier way to do it though!

Please let me know how many of you are interested in this. I'm going to put up full walk throughs as I move along but I will also sell some off for those that don't want to go through the hassle (is that ok on here? or do i need to set up donations?). Just a thought.
What would be the charging time using touchstone/conductive charging; or in other words, what would be the output voltage/current provided to the phone. It takes a while on regular chargers to charge the phone compared to HTC phones.
haha I actually did this too my I500. Literally car kit and everything. Even had it play music through Bluetooth. except I hated cases on that phone so I hardwired it. looked so much sexier. But the case is easier. Built like that too just didn't have the car cradle

I have 2 palm touchstones, 2 old fried pre & pre2, and 2 phone backs for the touchstone charger to integrate with the phone..
I would absolutely love to know how to integrate the "guts" of the battery cover with the needed parts into the e4gt innards to make the wireless charger .. but I'm not sure how yet.. :/ I will keep reading and post here if I get it working..
I assume that the physical connection is totally possible but the OS will most likely need to be able to control voltage and jazz so I'm not sure what would be needed for that part..

Thanks for all the interest and offers for assistance. Being that its my friend's birthday as well as my own on top of fathers day weekend I won't start any design research until Monday.
I have ordered some parts which should be here late next week. I am still trying to find a source for some type B micro USB plugs. Guess I'll shoud stop throwing away those electronic component magazines. I did a quick search and found some but they were $6.50 each with $10 shipping. If any of you have a source for these let me know. Hell you can send me spare cables and I'll deconstruct them if I have to, but that's not very fun.
When I get on my PC I'll add a poll to see where you all would like this topic to be. Then I'll ask you how do I move it

I actually got the touchstone and pre back and ripped out the inductive charging circuit just for this (I actually got it for my evo, but I upgraded before I had the chance to follow the evo guide). I'm excited for this!
Anyway - some heads up - the E4GT is MUCH heavier and bigger than the pre. Don't expect it to stay firmly attached. It will stay okay, but you need a really thin back face of the case. You may also try replacing the thin magnets with thicker rare earths. I actually got it under the stock cover okay, and that worked decently, but no good way to attach it. That's where I quit (after thinking about soldering to the board, but not having a good place on the USB connector without taking the phone all of the way apart. I also didn't fins another point on the board to solder to (like the charging circuit), although I'm sure it's there somewhere.
Also, you need to mount the inductive charging circuit a little low because the phone is so long that it will hit the table and not mount properly if you put it in the middle. Furthermore, be ware that if you add a connector to the USB port, this will exacerbate this problem, perhaps to the point of requiring landscape or stronger magnets.
The USB connector you want are available at a number of places. Ebay has some cheap micro usb adapters (including right angle) that you might play with. If you just want the connector itself, it will likely be more expensive, but I suggest checking mouser or digikey.

[Q] Resistor value to turn car mode on?

I've learnt from xda-developer forum that a Samsung Galaxy S can be put into Car mode using a 619k resistor soldered between USB pins 4-5 (Thread URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=820275 ).
Now I would like to know if anyone knows this resistor value in case of the OnePlus one. Has anyone tested if 619k worked?
What I would like to achieve is that when I insert my phone into my car dock then car mode is enabled automatically. After that my future favorite car dock app would launch and would turn the bluetooth on.
Looking forward to your helping replies.
I wouldn't advice doing that. I think the best thing to do in your scenario is to put an NFC tag in the car and use something like Tasker and set it up to automatically launch your car dock and enable Bluetooth when you tap the tag.

I suspect he's really background thinking his phone would be accepted as an android device, similar to how the car system uses another android device, his samsung.
That's my guess.
Why use a resistor when you can use tasker? Or a NFC card?
Maybe he just wants to get hacky? Can't blame him, NFC is an option, sure, but so is soldering s resistor on the charger as far as I'm concerned.

Plus I wonder what value it is to enable charging and usb-otg at the same time. It was 100k Ohm on my sony xperia p.
