Catlog on playstore works a lot faster for me. Your choice.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

Both of the above options works great. I recommend Catlog for beginners because it just prompts for root access and then displays your logs once granted. Then you are all set!
alogcat, on the other hand, does not prompt and has to be granted manually doing the following:
1. Install alogcat from the play store
2. Open root explorer and browse to your system root (not ur SD card, but actual system root.)
3.) go to /data/app and cut org.jtb.alogcat-1.apk
4.) go back to system root and now browse to: /system/app
5.) paste the file.
6.) set permissions to 0644 (-rw-r--r--)
7.) restart your phone.
Note: make sure you move or cut the file so that you don't have duplicate apps. If you do happen to copy, go back to /data/app after you have it copied and delete the original.
alogcat has to be a system app to function in 4.1.x and higher android systems. The above process converts it to a system app.
If you do choose alogcat and do not follow the above, you will not be able to see or save logs.

[Q] Where can I get the default android camera/sms apps for my sense rom?

Long story short, I like Sense but I ultimately prefer the default Android gallery, camera and sms apps. I was able to find a copy of Gallery, now I just need the Messaging app and Camera. Anyone have a link for those things? I searched but the results were a mess, and not what I was looking for.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
With the mms app, you can push it to the /system/app folder using ADB or a system level file manager like Root Explorer. The camera app goes to the same folder, however, there is more to it than that. Other items are involved and I don't know all that is needed to make it work. Anyway, you can download both from the links below:
AOSP MMS: http://db.tt/RNZoMm4
AOSP Camera: http://db.tt/J39Az2x

I put it in system/apps but it wouldn't load. Now my htc messaging app is gone. Ruh roh.

You need to set the permissions for it. Also, get in the habit of going into recovery and making a nandroid backup before making changes to your device. You can always extract the HTC SMS apk file from the rom zip file and push to the /system/app folder to restore it if you didn't create a backup prior to making the changes.

Yeah, you're right, I should do backups more often. How do I set the permissions for it?
Also, thanks a lot for the help, I really appreciate it.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
With a system level file manager like Root Explorer, maneuver to the /system/app folder, enable "mount r/w at the top of the screen, scroll down and locate mms.apk and then longpress on it. You will see several options with one of them being "permissions". Select permissions and set it accordingly:
Owner - Read Write
Group - Read
Others - Read
Afterwards, select okay and then select "mount r/o" at the top of the screen. You should be set.
posting & replying via the XDA Premium app.
That's not working for me.
Im using Warm 2.2 on an EVO. I downloaded the mms.apk and put it as is into system/apps. I rebooted and it didn't work, I deleted it and redownloaded it. Then, I changed the permissions after you recommended that, made sure root explorer set the directory back to r/o once I was done, and still no luck. I rebooted, and still nothing. Any idea what im doing wrong?

Are you familiar with ADB? Try pushing the file using the ADB commands. adb push mms.apk /system/app/
Or
adb shell
adb remount
adb push mms.apk /system/app/
Although I am currently using SalvageMod as my daily driver, I do have a nandroid backup of both RLS-5 and a rooted stock rom with the vanilla messaging app working in place of the HTC messaging app.

[HOWTO] Speed up force closes in T989 ICS ROMs

I noticed that force closes would lock up my phone with ICS ROMs enough to make it completely unusable at times. I noticed that this is so because a system state dump is done every time it hangs by default. I don't know how to disable this internally, but found out how to prevent dumpstate from running when this occurs.
Code:
su
busybox chmod a-x /system/bin/dumpstate
Enjoy!
So we just open a terminal emulator and type in that code?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium
An easier way is to navigate to /system/bin in Root Explorer, select dumpstate, long press, change permissions and remove execute permissions for all (system, user, etc).
Update: It's critical to ensure you have "R/W" permissions on the folder before doing this, if it reads "R/O" at the top, make sure you change it (change it by clicking on the "R/O", it will change to "R/W").

yea that happened to me what i did was flashed darkside cache wipe n booted then went into manage apps, root explorer then cleared data/cache for the app (i have a feeling i didnt even need to darkside cache wipe i probably just needed to clear app data but those are the 2 steps i did anyways)
Sorry for the late responses. It seems like others covered the spread, though. You can type those commands into a terminal or with adb using adb shell. I've never done it with Root Explorer (I use ES...it's free and can browse/remount as root), but make sure it has root permissions before continuing. Also make sure that the /system partition has been mounted as read-write; it won't work otherwise.
Can confirm it works with root explorer just make sure you switch to r/w
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I posted about this working in Root Explorer, without trying it firsthand, I've tried it now, and it does work. The reason is this, the original post's command simply reads: for all (that's the "a" part) users remove execute (the "-x" part) permissions. You can mimic this functionality in any App with the ability to change file permissions. It's critical to ensure you have "R/W" permissions on the folder before doing this, if it reads "R/O" at the top, make sure you change it.

Um that isn't going to brick you. Especially since you're talking about system app. Worst thing to happen would be a reboot if you touched an app which was currently running.
But I've been using root explorer and it works great. Or if the file is on my computer I use adb push. Or even a flashable zip if you really are worried.

Root Explorer is a file manager, use to move the file to the appropriate folder and set permissions and reboot. I know you can create a zip & tar file, don't know if it would be flashable though.

Did you reset permissions to match the rest of the files in the folder?
And you probably need to wipe dalvik and cache in recovery.

Please know what you're talking about first before posting suggestions. Especially when it pertains to system directory permissions. System/app directory uses rw-r--r-- as the permissions. Meaning owner has read write permissions while everyone else only has read. Not setting permissions correctly can lead to many many many issues.

Don't know what ROM you are on... your knowledge of pushing apps to /system (ie., via adb), etc., so I'm attaching the stock samsung keyboard (plain grey) with auto-correct functionality. You need to be rooted at least. Copy the attached apk to your phone... then, using your favorite root file manager (like Root Explorer, etc) copy to /system folder first... fix permissions to rw.r..r.. then, MOVE to /system/app. It will ask if you want to replace the current "SamsungIME.apk", answer yes. You should be good to go.

Those are folders/files in the flashable zip. Let's try the simpliest approach first.
1. Download "Root Explorer (File Manager) from the PlayStore, and install
2. From my post #6 above, save the attached file (SamsungIME.apk)... on your phone's sdcard
3. Open Root Explorer, and navigate to the folder on your phone (sdcard) where you put the SamsungIME.apk... long press it, then select "Copy"
4. now while still within Root Explorer, navigate to /system folder, and hit "Paste" (make sure you mount as R/W.. it's the button at the top. If you are mounted as Read Only, you'll get an error message "You cannot past here because the file system is read only". Just hit the "Mount R/W" toggle at the top of screen.
5. Now, "SamsungIME.apk" is in your /system folder. You need to fix permissions. Long press "SamsungIME.apk" and select "Permissions". There are boxes with green check marks. toggle the boxes so that you only have green check marks in: Owner: R W ; Group: R ; Others: R. Hit "OK"
6. Now, long press "SamsungIME.apk" file again, and select "Move"
7. Navigate to /system/app (you should already be in /system, so just tap the "app" folder
8. Make sure you are still mounted as "R/W", if so, tap the "Paste" key at bottom. this will put "SamsungIME.apk" in the /system/app folder
9. if you did all this correctly, you should be good to go...

It appears you are not understanding some of the android basics...and that can be extremely dangerous... especially since you are rooted. From you screenshot, you show zip files in your /system folder. Per my previous post, I stated to copy "SamsungIME.apk" to /system... fix permissions... then MOVE to /system/app. Your screenshot shows zip files in your /system folder (i.e., "SamsungIME.zip"). My attachment is the apk file itself. So apparently when you downloaded, it zipped it for compression purposes. YOU NEED THE APK. I suspect it is inside that zip file.. so you'll need to know how to unzip that zip.. and get the ".apk" The APKs goes into the /system/app folder (Not /system). Try again, and get the SamsungIME.apk out of that zip... copy that apk to /system.. fix permissions... then move (not copy) to /system/app (it's a sub folder within /system). If this didn't work, you have done something wrong.
Damn I had the feeling some was wrong. So should I get that out of the system folder? How do I do that ? I cant delete or move them. Does it harm if I leave them there? Ya im trying that now how yiu explained the apk I get it . Thanks alot tho for ur patients

I use Root Explorer... if you long press the file, you get the option to delete file. Delete the ".zip" files in /system folder. Your screenshot looks like ES File Explorer (or something similar). You should be able to "select" that zip file, then delete. Go back to my Post#6 and download the APK file (SamsumgIME.apk)... do not zip it... you should be able to download file as apk. Then follow my previous instructions. Again, get the APK file (not .zip) to /system folder.... then fix permissions... then MOVE (don't copy or you will leave a copy of the apk behind in /system) to /system/app folder. System apk files belong in the app subfolder of system (/system/app). When you go to paste the apk in /system/app, you will be asked to replace existing file... replace it. Try again... report back.
Ok thanks will do that tomorow . I use es explorer yes. When I try to delete it says file cannot be deleted. Cant see any apk file I use windows 8 maybe tahts why?

[Q] Help with root problems...

Ok, back again.
So, my situation is now this: The root worked, by appearance but somehow, it only seems to be a "partial root", for lack of a better description.
I have SU and Rootcheck Basic installed and it says that I have root, but I can't get the play store to work no matter what, and can't change permissions on the /system/apps folder or write to there when trying to copy the Google Play apk there (attempting to see if I can run or install it there).
And, IDK if this is relevant, KFFirstAide doesn't seem to be able to "find" certain folders and keeps showing errors such as: "The system cannot find the path specified. mkdir failed for /data/local/tmp, File exists" and "The system cannot find the path specified. rm failed for /data/local.prop, No such file or directory" for many operations during it's process, but overall, the operations don't fail.
For instance, the OTA updates seem to have been blocked, the ad services have been blocked and I was able to install Gmail.
Ultimately, any way to get the Google Play store installed?
Ok, I solved my own problem but for anyone that might have a similar problem, it was definitely the fact that the /system and /system/app folder for some reason, wasn't mounted as r/w after the root.
Solution: I downloaded the apk, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beansoft.mount_system&hl=en , which is a "mount system as rw" app (lol - go figure!), and voila!! SUCCESS!
I was then able to install the Google Play Store! So, as I suspected the fact that it was r/o, even after using KFFirstAide to root was what was preventing me from installing the Play Store.
And here's another site that really helps, if you can't download any apks or are trying to sideload something using an alternate method using your PC: http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/
tags: locked system folder, /system/apps, locked, read only after root, rw/ro, mount system, half root, incomplete root
