[Resolved] Apex 9/24 Update FC's - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Don't install the new Apex Launcher update until you've read the long list of reviews posted on the Playstore. *Everyone* is having FC issues. I hope this excellent launcher gets fixed soon.
It seems that the beta version of 1.3 (not available on the Playstore) was working fine for everyone, but the release version is apparently seriously broken. So until it's repaired, which will probably be soon, it's best to take a pass on the update.
Edit: See message #6 for a link to the working beta if you need it. (Thank you, jaidenwarren). The beta does work with the Pro license if you have it.
Edit 2: Reviews are now saying that the FC problem has been fixed.

Thanks for the heads up. But I recommend everyone uses beta version. Never any issues with them.

Yep, took down both Nexus phones here, one running JB and one running ICS. Luckily I had a backup on my JB one, my partner's phone wasn't so lucky.

Anyone having the force closes just reinstall the beta version if you were on one.

Thanks!

I will give you a link in 5 minutes.

Well, I'm sure the Apex developer has woken up to a nightmare scenario this morning. I'm a little surprised that the Playstore page hasn't at least reverted to the old version until the new one is fixed. Must have his hands full at the moment.
If, like me, you have Apex set up as the default launcher and stock launcher removed, the update can sort of soft-brick your phone. I had to restore a nandroid to get my phone back, like some others.

You can adb push a launcher into /system/app/ and it'll ask you what launcher you want to use.

And the version pushed out to the Play Store is newer than beta6.

That is why you always read the comments before updating an app
(unless you have auto-update enabled)

Just checked and apparently the broken Apex update has been fixed. At least that's what the reviews are saying now. Haven't tested it personally. Incidentally, it now wants more permissions (read call log).
Take a look at the one-star-review bar on the Apex Playstore page. It jumped from nearly invisible to very substantial overnight! Every dev's nightmare.

I can confirm that the latest version in the Play Store is now working.

it's been fixed and is now smoother than ever!

OK, thanks, guys.
That was pretty fast work by the Apex dev(s). About 12 hours from broken to fixed. Not bad.

Yeah, the update this morning killed it for me but the update I got later today made it all better

Don't update using the web downloader just tried it and every time I tried to go to home it fc. Then I updated on Google play and it fixed it.

I for one do not use NFC and rarely scan QR... But hopefully Samsung will take action on this security hole and patch it up ASAP, probably forcing them to send out JB sooner to the US variants together with the patch :fingers-crossed:
This can apparently be triggered by clicking a link on a malicious page too, not just NFC or QR codes. Not good.
However, from what I can see reading about this in a number of places, you're only susceptible if you're running TouchWiz... someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this is a TouchWiz vulnerability really.
The thing I'm NOT 100% sure about is if you have to be RUNNING TouchWiz or if it can still be exploited if you're using a different launcher but still have TouchWiz installed.
---------- Post added at 01:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:49 PM ----------
Hmm, reading further, I guess I'm not sure what they mean when they say "TouchWiz"... do they mean just the launcher or are the changes Samsung made to Android, aside from the launcher, considered TouchWiz too? In which case what launcher you're using may not matter, you are at risk of this exploit either way. Not sure, although now I'm thinking launcher DOESN'T matter. Anyone?

I believe they are referring in some point to the TW dialer, since they mention a dial code that is present in AOSP dialer and the user can simply cancel before it goes out, in the case of TW dialer it automatically goes through without the ability to cancel at all. Scary stuff!
"Only Samsung devices running TouchWiz appear to be affected, with basic Android only showing the code in the dialer screen but not running it automatically, Pau Oliva reports. Samsung’s default, though, is to dial the code automatically."
I think the article needs a bit more detail...

Not launcher. TW rom. As long as you are on a TW rom your susceptible. Aokp, aosp, etc won't work. You pretty much have to be able to use dialer codes because that's how it wipes your data, it automatically puts in the wipe data code

Problem was reported by a dev on Twitter to SamsungCarla and she escalated it to security unit.
So, according to AndroidPolice:
The bug is based in the stock Android browser, is in fact quite old, and has been patched in more recent builds of Android - this is probably why Nexus devices running the most recent OTAs are unaffected. The fact is, this is not a Samsung problem, it's an old Android problem that has been known about for some time. More recent versions of Android avoid the wipe issue, but unpatched devices (like some Samsung phones) may still be vulnerable.

That's interesting because it says to me that just disabling the default browser, as I've done since I use others, should avoid the issue... that'd be my conjecture anyway... but I'm NOT willing to test
Plus, that link also has an update saying the latest OTA for the GSIII don't suffer this problem... but that's a pretty nebulous statement, vis a vis, does it mean the latest Sprint OTA for example, or does it mean the GB for international models that started rolling out in Poland?
You're definitely right, the true story seems to be something we're still waiting on

Yup, according to Engadget:
If you were worried about stumbling onto a malicious website and accidentally wiping your Samsung Galaxy S III or other TouchWiz smartphone or slate, you can probably breathe easy. It's likely you already have firmware on your device which isn't vulnerable to the so-called dirty USSD code, and if not, you can download it now, according to Samsung. The company issued the following statement on the matter: "We would like to assure our customers that the recent security issue concerning the Galaxy S III has already been resolved through a software update. We recommend all Galaxy S III customers download the latest software update, which can be done quickly and easily via the Over-The-Air (OTA) service." It turns out we couldn't reproduce the bug earlier as we already had the latest update, and you should probably check to see that you do, as well. Meanwhile, we're also checking to see if other Touchwiz devices have been patched, so don't forget to watch what you click.

[MOD] Google Calendar with Textview (month) - 31.05. Update

Guys, although the Nexus 7 and the GNx have almost the same screen resolution, the N7 shows events in Textview whereas the GNx shows only small lines for an event, so I modded the Stock-JellyBean-Calendar for my GNx as you can see in the attached screenshot or here at directupload:
http://s7.directupload.net/images/121119/o9bix4gi.png
For any ROM out there I recommend using the latest market version of the calendar, as this is bug fixed by Google.
But which version you take is your own choice, both work perfectly on all JB-ROMs (4.1/4.2) including AOSP, AOKP, CM10, TWRP...
Just flash the zip from CWM, but do a nandroid before (for your own security).
Update 07.11.2013:
- maintaining the newest version here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47222855
Update 31.05.2013:
- Updated to new market version (v 201305280)
- CWM package
Update 13.12.2012:
- Updated to new market version (v 201212060)
- Lockscreen Widget for 4.2
- New event picker in month view (long press)
Just flash in CWM. If you encounter errors, please uninstall any previous calendar with Titanium Backup and try a new flash. The problems with my old mod were signing problems, sorry for that.
Update 16.11.2012:
- Updated to new market version (v 201210220)
- according to Google, the battery consumption should be lower
- If you don't see the calendar after flashing, please flash the first market version first, reboot, then flash the new version.
Thanks to Finner42 for this idea, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34591851&postcount=64
Update 18.10.2012 the 2nd:
- Added modded new market version (v 201210120)
Update/Changelog 18.10.2012:
- CWM flashable zip
- Changed from GoogleCalendar 4.1.1 to 4.1.2
- some small fixes with the color squares
Old (archived) files:
Market Calendar 201212060: http://ul.to/h25nmaoz
Market Calendar 201210220: http://ul.to/0p2w4aqh (don't use!)
Market Calendar 201210120: http://ul.to/mxq278r8
AOSP 4.1.2 Calendar: http://ul.to/53ih6ior
Differences between the stock 4.1.2 and the market calendar:
The market version syncs back events up to one year, whereas stock calendar syncs back to 3 weeks only (standard android behaviour). To get synced one year when you had stock calendar before: you have to delete the data in -> settings -> apps for "Calendar" and "Calendar Provider" and sync again manually after that.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you have updated the calendar via market before, you have to uninstall this update before flashing, otherwise you will see nothing. Android prefers the .apk in /data/app over any system-apk in /system/app - that is a pretty normal behaviour.
Enjoy!
Additional Information:
Just a note as some people are unsure about GApps and CM10/AOKP. This is only important for people who like to know deeper. If you flash via CWM or are on Stock ROM, you don't have to worry about this:
In every official GApps (even the newest ones) are the old sync adapters from ICS which work with CM10 calendar (and have dark colors).
The market calendar and the stock-JB-calendar have its own sync adapter included, so you should delete GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk too, when you delete (CM10-) Calendar.apk
NEVER delete calenderprovider.apk, account information and the data is stored in there!
My modded calendar has an update script which cares for either situation, so that it can be used in CM10 and/or StockROMs.
Besides: Paranoid Android users don't need the modded calendar, as you may use tablet UI in market calendar for sure.
If you like to mod yourself, here are instructions for code changes:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35414528&postcount=80
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ROM-COOKERS:
Surely you may include this mod in your ROMs if you like it. I got a few PNs the last days but wasn't online here, sorry for that.
I got so much from xda and from other (real) developers, that it makes me happy if you consider this mod useful!
Added CWM flashable zip, should be easier for all of you.
Works on every JB-ROM, odexed and deodexed (AOSP, CM10...)
Please do a Nandroid before, just in case...!
Thank you for this mod. I like it. But can you please do this with the calendar from Android 4.1.2. or tell me how I can do it by myself. I don't know if there is something new in this version of the calendar but it got a new version number so maybe some Bugfixes.
According to the official Google changelog there is only a widget background change in 4.1.2, otherwise it's the same as 4.1.1
You have to modify "integers.xml" for the text size labels and "bools.xml" for general work of the new layout (in /res/values)
In addition, some things are hardcoded in /smali/com/android/calendar/month/MonthWeekEventsView.smali (text size of event time and the color squares)
In summary there's no real difference between those calendars. If I'm on 4.1.2 I will change this and update this post, in the meantime you can use the 4.1.1 with no loss of function.
[edit]
New 4.1.2 is online
I flashed this on top of the 4.1.2 Calendar update published on Google Play but did not work.
I then restored a 4.1.1 Calendar backup from Titanium then reflashed the zip but still didn't work.
I then uninstalled the 4.1.2.Calendar update directly from Google Play (not from Apps or Titanium Backup) and then it worked.
FYI.
I will update this thread in a few hours, am on mobile now.
New market calendar is already modded. If you can't wait get it here:

I am going to try to find a working version tonight. I can tell you about Gotham that when it says things are broken in repository, its not really true. That nightly is the 11/14 or 11/15 nightly. My tablet died and I got busy with an emergency right now so I don't know what nightly I have on my nexus 7 but was able to use video add ons before with no issue. I'm using the latest nightly (xbmc-20131211-210cf9f-master-armeabi-v7a.apk) from the 11 December from http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/xbmc/nightlies/android/arm/
Most of the add-ons do not work but I haven't had any issues with sound on video playback like most of the other versions.
One I've found was DEC 6 nightly build. Doesn't force close every two minutes maybe once or twice a day. When you get the not working errors just cancel them. Everything works fine from my end. Not moving from this build. Most stable I found.
Sent from my HUAWEI MT1-U06 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Same issue here.
Official answer is to use Nightlies, but XBMC automatically marks ALL addons on nightlies as incompatible whether or not it is actually true. Makes nightlies pretty goddamned worthless, and they won't vary from their "monthly" release schedule even for a major compatibility fix.
So basically if you use XBMC... don't ever upgrade your OS version.
One way to get various addons to work is to use the xbmchub wizard from xbmchub.com. When XBMC tells you addons are marked as broken, do you want to disable, just say no to each one. Annoying, but so far other than Navi X I can use my addons without issue.

I believe 4.3 and 4.4 get MiCode releases at the same time.
I'll just do 4.4 when it's available
Nice! Been waiting for this!

Look in the 'Market App' and use the G-apps installer present, it is also on the MIUI forums
Not being able to turn off the nav bar is a deal breaker for me. Liked the rom, but no need for the nav bar on the S4.

This is just an early alpha, a test to see if the frameworks will run correctly.
The nav-keys are there in-case HW keys are not functional so feedback can still be given and they can be disabled by removing:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
in build.prop, this text entry turns the on-screen softkeys on and removing it will disable them
Edit: the next version-up will be far more 'complete' this was just built today on a CM10.1 base that was just built today :x
No more updates?
Google Account
Cannot find a way to add Google Account. Only offers Exchange, MI Cloud, Mail??????
I was able to setup Google in Browser with my GMail account, but......
And when I try to start playstore after installing the apk,, it starts then goes back to the icon. I think because it needs the Google account info first.
I do have all the other recommendations in FAQ working, including root, etc.
FIXED: http://en.miui.com/thread-3998-1-1.html
Go to this page. Create an account to allow download of the Google apps installer. Make sure you enable all of the settings including ok to adding Google framework. After doing all of this you will see a slew of Google downloads including the playstore app. My mistake was locating an apk file and installing standalone. That will not work. I uninstalled that APK and used the link I show. Then it works

I am an old time MIUI user back in my Nexus One days when I left IPhone for my first Android. Coolest MIUI stuff is the ultimate amount of themes out there. It does take a lot of extra effort in customizing the way you like a setup, but I find MIUI so refreshing compared to the typical stuff available. I actually find this really responsive including consistent 32Mps download speeds speedtest.net in my home here in Las Vegas. To bad more developers here aren't into working with MIUI. Even though it's still using 4.2.x, everything I need works, including Samsung WatchOn that was posted here on another ROM as a standalone recovery installation with a Kit Kat 4.4.x ROM.
Have you tried the full latest MIUI download for the I9505. Been trying to download that for the last three days. REALLY slow site
Miss the days when there were those English packs that pretty much weeded a lot of the Chinese stuff out, but I can live with that too :good:
Edit: Just saw your join date here same as me...Jan 2010 and you also had the Nexus One. Probably ran into some time or another back in those olden days if I did a search here......
PPS...not much traffic so I am taking a little libery in thread drift too

OK, a new update is coming tomorrow.
Now that I understand this phone a bit more I can do a more stable version with the next revision.
I'm going to also include the software camera that comes with Xiaomi phones as well, I'll need feedback on it so I'm going to put it in another flashable zip independent of the download link for MIUI.
Also 4.2.2 is cool and all that but I've been prepping a 4.4 base for MIUI v6 as well and working on a solution for OTA update as well.

I am totally sold on going back to MIUI. I forgot how much custom stuff was possible. So include me. More than happy to test stuff too before posting if you want help. Spent three days trying to download from the MIUI world site the slighter later, but bloated version which I assume would have been compatible. I9505. But failed at installing in recovery. I have one app that refuses to work correctly with 4.3 or 4.4 updates, but works perfectly under 4.2, but I can live with updates to newer. I basically have to delete cache files everytime before starting the app. Annoying, but do-able.
PS...what local folder are themes that are downloaded stored in. I couldn't get a .mtz file to install when I manually went on the MIUI world site. Using the THEME app on the phone works. Just have to get past the Chinese texts to figure out how to individually apply separate items such as lock screens etc.
EDIT: The prior MIUI theme installers allowed to pick and choose what aspects of a theme you wanted to install. Could not see how to do this currently, unless I'm missing something.
Keep up the good work...thanks!!!
i really cant wait. i hate the nav bar. other than that everything works great even lte

Google now launcher rotation

gratz... i guess?
whats the point of this post? are you trying to tell us there is a new update to the launcher? are you saying you modded/hacked the launcher itself or made an edit to the build.prop to enable it? or have you simply used the search function and are telling us that procedures that are described in other (device-)forums/threads work for the 5x as well?
just wondering since in my opinion this is an option that would certainly make the experience with the 5x a little more fluent without using a third party launcher.
There was an update to the launcher and its the most glorious day of my ****ing life. Lonmg have i awaited the landscape mode in the google now launcher
Your welcome F.....s
What is the launcher version? I have 1.3.large and it tells me it's the latest. No rotation here..

from what i could find, it's actually not an update to the launcher, but rather the google app through which the launcher settings are managed.
my version (without landscape) is 5.7.14.19.arm64, the latest slowly being rolled out is 5.8.47.19.arm64.
could be wrong though.
anyway, my actual launcher version is the same as yours, and as far as i can see there were no updates of that pushed to the playstore. oh the waiting game.

since i was bored anyway: apkmirror.com
oh that's cool, i wasn't aware they finally allowed this.
Been using Nova but I'll enable it on my SOs phone
Thank you and Google ! I was looking for this feature for ages
Easier way to get rotation is to become a Google tester. The version that it will allow you to download has the allow rotation option.
