[Q][discussion]Cool software features of GS3 ported to our Nexi - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

A couple of things that I would like to see on custom ROMS
SVoice. First of all I really don't care about SVoice. But I find pretty cool that when alarm rings you can just say "snooze" instead of wondering in the dark where is your phone.
Eye tracking to keep screen on
Direct call
Auto tagging of photos
Is this possible for the ROM developers? I mean the hardware is there, right?

There are a few random threads about some of these features. Basically if what I read in them are correct we will need a port of the new TouchWiz. And it hasn't been released yet so its not available to port.

Eye tracking is going to be such a battery drain, LOL.
Running a big screen and FFC together throughout the day is going to be a killer.

I dont agree with this statement (my 2100mAh extended battery gets me between 2-3 hours screen on time), and dont find it relative to the SGN.

I've seen too many people say they get 2 days on this battery to write the statement off as sarcasm. *hangs head*

I have the official 2000mAh battery for my gsm GNex and I get around 6 hrs screen time on auto brightness.

So, you get twice the battery life I do?

Most of these features are like Face-Unlock. Do you actually use it? I've used it ONCE just to show off to my iPhone friends.

I was afraid for something like that...I don't like AOSPless interfaces but I am open to the new TouchWiz. If I find a ported ROM, I will definitely try it. I guess we have to wait a month+ to see something though.

New Review Of The LTE Version From MDW.com

Thanks for the link pretty good review
Battery life (Even on 3G) seems poor according to his review. Then again, I'm not sure what his definition of "heavy usage" means compared to mine.

Yeah. I feel your pain. I know there have been a couple threads with the title something like "The Battery Life Of My LTE GN Will Be Awesome" or some such but in my roadtesting of the intial version of LTE it just EATS the battery on everything I've tried. Thunderbolt, Charge, whatever, it's just wishful thinking. (Not that I blame you LTE guys, I really, really want to be wrong.) It's actually what stops me from jumping to Verizon. Hopefully the bugs will be worked out by the time A/B rolls out.

Its all about how you use it. Battery life is so subjective its hard to tell till you get it in your hands.

That's the fault of the first generation LTE chips being used. Not only are they large but they also use way more power than the second generation chips expected sometime next year.
How is it that reviews are already popping up for the LTE version but it hasn't even passed through the FCC yet?

1) He got 10 hours of "heavy usage" on 3g.
2) It really takes a week or two weeks to get the battery warmed up IMO. None of the review sites factor this in. For example, when I got my Nexus S, I got 6 to 8 hours on a charge at first. But after two weeks (and still today) I go a whole day (14 hour or more) very often.
(snif) actual screencaptures and not blurry photos. Thanks p3!
Battery life seems worrying. Still trying to decide whether to import it or just go with Verizon... and if the LTE can't last a day I'm not sure that will work for me.
Does 'heavy use' mean constant browsing? Video playback? Games? More detail would be nice.

I'm in the same boat you are in bro, I was thinking of importing one from the UK to use on T-Mobile but I don't know if I want to drop $750 , so I was thinking of switching to Verizon for the Gnex, but I'm worried about the battery. I hear LTE murders batteries ... so I'm definitely on the fence right now

LTE just seems utterly pointless at this stage. If the battery life is good with 3G/HSPA then it's all good. They shouldn't have bothered with the LTE radio until they become more efficient or battery tech improves.

The reviewer said that the Google Search bar is permanent on the home screens in the launcher?
I hope that is not true. I understand it replaces the search button on the bottom but... shouldn't we have the option to customize our home screens precisely how we want to? =O
And what about Nexus S devices when they get Ice Cream Sandwich. Does that mean they'll have the capacitive search button on the bottom, plus the permanent search bar on the home screen?

I believe it's along the same lines as Sprint's WiMAX. 4G destroyed my battery on the Evo, so I only ever turned it on for downloads or streams - if not, just turn it off.

Chameleon Home Replacement

So something I've been really looking forward too, as well as a lot of other Android Tablet owners, is the upcoming Chameleon Home Replacement.

But why would I post this on the Galaxy Nexus forum????
Today, with the most recent Kickstarter update if you pledge $5 or more you get first access to Chameleon...for your phone!!!

In the most recent update video from today however he actually appears to hold up a Galaxy Nexus with some form of Chameleon running.
I think it would work for the Gnex. Its 4.0.4 which is above 3.2, and the screen reso is 1280 by 720, which is HD and need for this. I hope it works anyways.

Live wallpaper has had little affect on battery life for the last few Android releases. Screen on time and talk time is what will affect battery life.

Yeah doubt that will happen, they have the issues squared away (or so they say) so they won't be susceptible to the problem they had the last time.
Oh this is awesome news for my Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab 10.1 - now they will be in harmony.
This looks promising I will be following.

My job just got me a new phone SGSIII! Way better than the on call Blackberry

Came in today to find a SGS3 on my desk woot! I like ICS wish it had Jelly bean, but it's great so far. I gotta get this an xoskin right after work, woot for a company card. I have had a Blackberry Bold for an on call phone and I guess my complaints didnt fall on deaf ears. The thing had issues, I dont even know where they got it. The sticker on the back says property of research in motion limited. It was like some demo blackberry haha. Just waiting for exchange to sync, then I will customize it. What average battery life should I expect? I had like 3 spare batteries on my old evo, as long as I can get 8 hours I should be good.

You can get jellybean, there's a couple good stable ROMs. I'm using baked black bean 5 right now and it does well, you can use team venum's jellybean ROM because its touchwiz, although I really don't like touchwiz(thought it was great until I tried normal android without it)oh and jellybean would require root unless you wait for the official update which is supposed to be this month.
I'm on stock unrooted(for now at least) and I can go from 7 am to 10 pm with about 6 or 7 hours of screen on time and still have around 20 percent left.

I'm a script developer in the android hacking general section of xda. I've got a few super noob question (s).
1.) What are you guys getting for battery life on the stock ROM with no tweaks?
2.) Are there any extended life batteries from Sprint or Samsung?
3.) Is there a root method for MB1?

That's correct. I don't know of any extended batteries that still have nfc capabilities, and that's the number 1 reason a lot of people don't go for the extended battery route.

1- Battery life is good on the S3 but sometimes settings and apps need to be tweaked. Many threads on this.
2- Yes, go to sprint.com and select shop then accessories. Select the phone and it's listed under Charge & Power. Or go to amazon and get the gorilla gadget extended batt for less then 1/2 cost of Sprint. I personally don't have an extended batt but thought about it, and recently did some research on em. Both options keep nfc fully functional.

If they just decreased the battery capacity I think it would fix the problem. And I for one would still take a Note 7 with a 3400, 3300 or even 3200mAh battery. But alas I've pre-ordered a Pixel Xl already.
There ae vids out there that drop the Note7 from 1000 feet on to asphalt They pick up the phone and start using it.
It's possible it's just random defects and it could be any phone.
I think the reason they dropped the note 7 is a marketing issue. The model is tarnished so they are just cutting their losses.
