My brother got me a rooted evo on the local classifieds a week ago to replace my htc hero(Best birthday gift I've ever gotten from him ), so I went into the sprint store and bought an otterbox defender case for $50. I really want to hold on to the evo until something worthy of an upgrade comes out so I figured I couldn't go wrong with the case.
PROS
Build Quality - simply amazing, it makes me want to throw the phone off the 5th floor of my building to test it out
Included belt clip - Lets face it, the case makes the phone bulky and the 4.3 screen adds up to its size. The clip is well made and the case is sturdy in it, doesn't feel like its going to fall off.
CONS
Price - A little steep at $50 but you get what you pay for... which is peace of mind
Plastic Kickstand - The case covers the whole phone, including the metal kickstand. Otterbox designed a second kick stand which is made out of plastic in order for users to keep this feature, the kickstand broke the other day when I gently popped it out in order to show some friends a video during lunch(Hella embarrassing lol).
Heres where customer service comes in, I called them, call got answered almost instantly and I explained the kickstand issue to the rep. I asked him if I could get a new kickstand shipped out so I could use my case again(looks fairly easy to replace). Without asking any questions he asked for my address and shipped out a new case for me. I quickly realized that those $50 I spent really paid off in the end.
Overall the case may have some quality issues with the evo 4g due to the kickstand, but overall great quality and great customer service make me a happy camper
All future cases on my phones will be otterbox cases
I had the same experience with my wife's Nexus One and my HD2 otterbox.
The hard plastic breaks fairly easy but just a phone call to them will get you a brand new replacement in one week.
Otterbox is one of the few companies that still recognizes the importance of excellent customer service. The kickstand issue with the Evo 4G is a fairly common problem, but Otterbox is quick to replace it. Due to their quality and outstanding customer service I have a Defender and a Commuter case for my Evo 3D. The quality of the Defender is even better for the 3D model, AND smaller!! Some of the Commuter cases have an issue with the inner silicone not being tight at the top of the phone. 5 minute phone call with no questions asked and I have a new Commuter case scheduled to arrive this Friday. I had an issue with my Ballistic HC on my Evo 4G and Ballistic acted like the could care less, and told me I would just have to buy another one...... no thanks! These incidents have assured me to be a life-long Otterbox user, an just keeping Ballistic in mind as another option.....if desperate

They will support it, heck! I got the one for my HD2 off Craigslist and they still do.
So feel free to buy them off Fleabay.
Supporting the kickstand?
Do they just replace it with the same thing or is it new and improved? They only thing I absolutely hated about the case was the kickstand.
Also the holster's clip can latched in an "out" position to hold phone in portrait on a table too
They have sent me a couple of commuter cases with zero problems after the silicone near the bottom of the phone became flimsy. I didn't want to get another one when the issue occurred for a third time and asked if I could upgrade to a defender series. I told them I would even foot the bill for the price difference and they told me don't worry, we will send you a defender.
Great customer service, but a rushed build for the Evo. The iphone case looks way better, but then again the curved shape and camera sticking out of the Evo didn't help much in terms of making the case.
I switched cases with my brother today (gave him my defender while his gets replaced)
the rubber got flimsy and came off the plastic, he didn't notice and he clipped it on his belt, when he took it out the rubber got torn.
Called otterbox and they sent me a replacement(waiting for it)
Since he works in construction, I gave him my defender so hes protected while I wait for his replacement.
I agree Otterbox is great. I have a commuter case and wanted a new screen protector film. I couldn't find them anywhere on their site so I called to ask where I could order one. She said "you can't order them because they are a warranty item. Let me get your address and I'll send you a couple". Amazing!
I love my otterbox defender I'm never going with any other case you just cant beat there warranty

Awesome i definitely need to get this case before its to late, im a landscaper and i had a 10 dollar case from a gas station. it got nothing but beat to hell my evo now has 2 scratches in the screen which ticks me off. but i guess thats what you get from a cheap case gonna go buy the defender tonight. thanks

I bought the otterbox defender a while back and the silicon rubber outer shell is flabby and its got a big air bubble thing goin on on the back. And it doesnt stay streched tight. Has anyone else had this problem with the defender?

Nope, only issue I notice is when charging the bottom part pulls away from the phone a bit but thats it

My wife and I have the Otterbox Impact series case for our Evos and love them.
Good impact protection for a silocone case.
The silicone on my defender is flabby and stretched out. So otterbox is sending me some new silicone skins. Will be here in 8 days

Having personally used this case, I have to say it is pretty good. I bought it from a guy at a sprint store secondhand (he was upgrading to Evo 3D) for 40 dollars give or take. It retails for about 60 or so, (in the store it did that is) so i felt I got a good deal, even though i neglected to look online for better deals. Anyways, it does what it should, and keeps my evo pristine looking. The only thing is that the plastic kickstand is prone to breaking. It's not that big a deal though, since even though I am not the original owner of the case, I am getting a new one shipped to my house for free. You can't beat customer service like that.

I would go with the seidio if i had to pick between the two. I am a welder and the otterbox has absolutely no protection for the speaker or camera. I ordered the trident witch has screens to protect both the camera and the speaker...... I am on my 3rd speaker on my phone, it was poorly protected from the factory and collects anything magnetic really well. It also has more then a peel and stick protection for the screen.

Nice thread to start. I have been wondering the same thing myself. From what I've read, it seems like the soft plastic on the Otterbox is thinner than it used to be. It's similar to the Seidio in that their port covers are now prone to being easily ripped off. The older Otterbox covers seemed to rip off less frequently.
I hate my Seidio Rugged. It's falling apart. I've ordered a Cyclops and will probably try out the Ballistic when it's released.
The Ballistic seems like it will be the toughest case made for Evo, especially since the Kraken will probably not be made.
I have both and prefer the otterbox much more.

i just made this decision myself. Was deciding between the Otterbox Defender, Seidio Innocase Rugged with Holster, and the Ballistic HC (which should be released any day now). After much research and review, I decided on the Seidio, but actually going with the Best Buy version which is called the Platinum brand and its the Defense model. Same thing, but I can buy it tommorow and put it on my phone instead of ordering and having to wait. Plus, if something goes wrong, I can go back in the store and exchange it instead of having to ship it back.
The kickstand on the Defender is defective. Had mine for 3 days before it spontaneously crumbled. This is know issue and big problem.

The kickstand on my Defender broke somehow while the case was in my pocket,hadn't even used it. The holster was an extremely sloppy fit,had to glue some felt pads in it so the phone wouldn't rattle around. Pulled the screen protector off as I was getting the oil spill effect on the screen. I guess you can fix that with baby powder but I don't need two protectors on the phone. After all this plus the 9 day debacle/wait to get the case shipped to me Otterbox waived all charges and freebied me the case. I'd have been POed to have paid more than $10-12 for it.
The Rugged case is ugly compared to the Defender but I think it offers more protection and the holster is much higher quality. The Exoskeleton at least on the earlier versions is the weak point as the corners break off. Seido's CS did approve my replacement request and shipped me a new case within 48 hrs and the skeleton is a slightly different design so I'll see if it holds up better.
I'm looking forward to the Ballistic case.

I also really like the Ballistic, and that was my first choice. I just dont like the way that the back of it looks in the new pics of it since its redesign...looked much better before...that and it IS gonna be big. It being so big didnt bother me at first, but now I'm rethinking it

Phone fits snug in mine, no slack at all. There are a few others with broken kickstands and others that are rough on them have no problem. I dont know what the issue is I dont believe they have any other revisions of the case out yet but if my kickstand does break you can bet your ass Im will be on the horn complaining about it, Not only did we have to wait more than a half of a year but as soon as it comes out there are a bunch of people having issues with it. I haven't had any issue and I got mine for free but this is suppose to be their toughest case that stands up to everything but water and people are reporting it doesnt even hold up to a pocket? Kinda crazy if you ask me but then again I am loving mine so far.
I went with Seidio, didn't know it came with the Innocase Surface too. That was a bonus, really liked my Surface on my Hero. Seems pretty durable I've pulled the case off my phone numerous times and no broken tabs. I really like the fact that the camera is completely covered. My only problem is the screen cover it came with has really bad glare, but that's not a big deal. All in all really pleased so far, I would definitely recommend it.

No glare on my otterbox screen (I did have to remove ther ZAGG protector) and the camera and led's are covered as well.
My Defender kinda sucked due to the faulty kickstand. I bought an Impact for $15 after discounts and I love it.
P.S. Otterbox promised me they would credit my card back within 2 days for the Defender. It has been a week and no credit so now I have to waste another half hour on hold to call and ***** about it. Pisses me off.

It has been thanksgiving and all.
When I bought my HTC Evo I purchased the Otterbox Commuter from Sprint. Being a Premier Customer I received a discount on accessories in addition to the sale they were running on accessories at the time. After getting all set up I gave my HTC Hero to my girlfriend to replace her Palm Pre. She liked her phone, but knew she wanted a case. I gave her the option of the Invisible Shield from Zagg, like she'd had on her Pre, or an Otterbox Commuter like mine. She liked the idea of the larger case because she's hard on phones.
So, I ordered her the Commuter and it arrived at the house when I was on my lunch hour. I placed it on the counter so she'd see it when she arrived home. I figured she'd understand that I was placing it there so she could see it and I would install it when I got home. Boy, howdy, was I wrong. I came home and she'd destroyed the screen protection that comes with the case. I tried as best I could to save it, but it was hopeless. It was completely ruined.
I told her that she could use the case, but to continue babying her phone because there was no screen protection at this point. I emailed Otterbox and explained the situation to them. I requested that they send me a new screen protector and I would pay for it, as well as shipping. I didn't hear from anyone for about a week, but someone did get back to me. They offered to replace it and requested my information.
I sent them my name/address/previous order information and they told me they were sending a replacement out. I thanked them profusely and, again, offered to pay for it. They denied my offer. About a week later I received a package in the mail. They sent a whole new case, not just a screen protector. They replaced the whole order! Otterbox is the best.
tl;dr: My girlfriend destroyed the screen protector to the Otterbox Commuter case I bought her. Otterbox replaced the whole case, not just the screen protector, for free with free shipping.
I used to sell Otterboxes and Body gloves. Otterboxes may not be cheap, but they do a hell of a job protecting your phone. Body Gloves are a bit cheaper, but they're nothing compared to Otters.
Those Blackberry and iPhone 3GS Defender cases were some of the most insane, most durable cases on the market. I had people come get one and intentionally throw or drop their phone just to prove how much it worked. Never saw a broken phone from that situation once. I was always from the camp of have it "in case" that happens but don't tempt fate.
The only issues I ever had with those was the "oil slick" appearance that pretty much mandated an anti glare screen or the baby powder trick.
Now with the new batch they've apparently corrected the "oil slick" but the durability of the cases for the iPhone 4 and EVO are way way down. Not only do they have parts that break (kickstand anyone), but the rubber fits in this little tiny channel and gets stretched just enough where it comes out very easily.
The service from the customer service has always been superb, as long as you call and patiently wait to speak with someone. I realize they have a relatively small CS team, so this is not an issue with me.
The only issue I take out is the quality of the cases they are currently putting out. I broke a kickstand on an EVO defender having never used it, opened it, and never dropped the phone either. Sure they replaced it, but that thing crumbled without any force or abuse.
It's a little plastic clip though, so that part you can't really be too surprised about. I'm surprised with how rough I am on my Evo the kickstand is still there.
Good for you, I know many people that rave about their customer service.
However, the new stuff seems to have taken a nose dive in quality. Buyer Beware. I'm an advocate of Ballistic and Trident now.
I recently ordered my ballistic hc case of off amazon just in time because I got my first scratch today so I can't wait to get it. But to all the owners out there, how does it hold up? How does it feel, do you like it, is it worth it? Because this scratch really opened my eyes but at least its not on the display. And on a semi related note, anybody have any tips on how to maybe buff it out or something?
i could beat somebodies head in with this case on my phone and still make the call to 911 when i was done. love it. if you hate bulk you wont like it. overall one of the best cases i have ever bought.

I'm willing to accept the bulk on the basis that it will definitely protect my phone cause I've been scared of touching my poor phone ever since I scratched it today.
Love it, love it, love it. I grabbed mine for $30 off Amazon, and it was WELL worth it. Quality is definitely there. I usually use mine without it around the house, as it is rather bulky, but I wouldn't go to work without it. I truly feel like my phone is protected when I'm out and about now. And the holster is 100x better than the one that came with my Otterbox from my old iPhone 3GS.
Just a little update on how much i love this. i wont get a phone unless they will make a HC case for it. where i work is bad on phones. from dust to long drops.
I love this case, makes the phone feel huge but its ok cause our phones are huge anyways

Until you take the case off, then the phone feels tiny and sexy. I personally don't care how big the phone is, as long as I don't have to worry about dropping it.
I got it off amazon for about $30 as well. It kept going up a dollar every day so I was like I have to take the plunge soon before its at full price again. I can't wait to get it.
Well I have had mine about three weeks now, I broke the holster in the first week and a half, customer serv is sending me a replacement. I was reading a few people having issues with the prox sensor using this case then I noticed I was also, after cutting the plastic screen protector that covers the sensor off it is working perfectly now.
$50 is too much!
$30 on Amazon, bravo, $50 from Ballistic, a bit much. I like mine but have one major complaINT.... WHAT'S WITH THE CHEAP PLASTIC KICKSTAND? They should send everyone a better designed replacement, damn thing is like something out of a CrackerJacks box.
I agree with the stand comment, on another note I got my replacement holster and they sent me a new case because of the prox sensor problem.

Without the optional rubber outer layer it's about the same size as the Cyclops. If that's too large for you then you probably will be much happier with something like the Otterbox Commuter.
I personally can't support Otter right now with their poor quality control though.

I just received mine today and all I can say is wow! I have been through so many cases that ended up being junk and I finally have something that delivers the goods!
1st Sprint Body Glove - cracked and broke after 1 week
2nd Zagg screen protection with naked phone. Began to peel after 2 weeks
3rd. Seideo Innocase Active limited edition - 1st one corner cracked and back peeled constantly
4th Second Seido Innocase Active - 2 corners cracked after very minor drop.
5th 5$ ebay rubber/ silicone case. Actually was ok but couldnt use charge port while it was connected.
6th and hopefully final case Ballistic HC! This one feels like a tank! I don't mind the bulk because this one will actually last. I bought it on ebay for $33 here. Don't screw around with other cases like I did (and waste so much $), just get this one and be done with it!
Mine is on the way. $25 off ebay. My seidio rugged really held up great but i just wanted something new ive had that seidio for months. Passed on otterbox for ballistic. Hope its as good as the seidio

This is MUCH better than Seidio. My Seidio is falling apart and unusable, the protection on the Ballistic seems to also be superior.

My Seidio "Rugged" case also fell apart. The Ballistic case is built 100 times better. I can't see this thing falling apart unless I actually try to destroy it.

The design on the Seidio just doesn't make sense, I don't understand why they'd build the exoskeleton that way. Go Ballistic!
This is a great case! We have 4-5 users here that have that case and I borrowed one for a weekend. While I love the protection I just can't get over the bulk, so in the end I kept my Case-Mate Tough Case which has so far protected my phone vs my 2yo.
I have had the Ballistic case for about a week now, I think they made a great case! I have only the one complaint I think everyone does, what the heck were they thinking with the kickstand, it's useless! Though I don't really miss it that much, I wish it were there....

This case is very nice, two piece design, offers great protection. My little kids did the testing, and it works, sailing off the counter top onto the hardwood floor lots of times, with zero issues And the back rubber feel of it is soooooo nice in the hand, perfect grip. But again a little thick to be putting in jeans and soon shorts for Summer, will stick out too much, and scare the ladies. But this case is a keeper for riding my Mountain Bike, or going to carnival rides. Great case, keeping this.

This is the slimmest of all cases I have had, and I actually like that a lot. I like thin phones, not bricks, and the other cases while nice, were just way too big, making the EVO feel much larger than it already is. The Edge is slim, nice color, and fits in pockets effortlessly. Great case, keeping this.

you are wrong about the shipping you dont pay one red cent. ive had several otterboxes for ever phone ive had and all ive ever had to do was make a 5 minute max phone call or an email and i get whatever i need in 2-3 days in the mail, Ive never had to send anything back. its so easy its ridicules. as a matter of fact i just called and told em i didn't like the defender case because the kick stand was just too thin(i agree with u on that point that kickstand is horrible thin as a reed) they sent me another defender to replace the broken stand and sent me a commuter case for free. All of this cost me nothing but the time to make the call.
Fact of the matter is if you want a serious case thats gonna give your phone maximum protection any case whether its otterbox ,titan, seido all of em r bulky when you want max protection. its a bit of a trade off as i see it, yea its bulky but my phone looks brand new indefinitely.
Check out trident cyclops, i've always been a big fan of them.

Fact of the matter is if you want a serious case thats gonna give your phone maximum protection any case whether its otterbox ,titan, seido all of em r bulky when you want max protection. its a bit of a trade off as i see it, yea its bulky but my phone looks brand new indefinitely.

You are correct sir, for some reason unknown I was thinking about Zagg and they make you pay for a return. Just got off the phone with Otterbox and they are shipping me a new commuter case, took all of 5 minutes.

Hey guys i just got this case in the mail today. Its called the Seidio Active, it is half silicon and half hard plastic the hard plastic has a nice rubberized grip to it. It feels like a nice strong case, but i haven't gotten to test it out yet,and dont plan on anytime soon! Its doesn't make the phone too bulky it says its only 2.2mm thick with the case on.

seems like it's a good case and does provide some protection against drops. Might get it if I can't find a cheaper case like this.
I use this case and its excellent ibe dropped my phone a couple of times and its done well I just wish it was available in different colors and I got it for around 15$ on amazon however I don't know if its still on sale for that price

Just got mine yesterday, Amazon 20 bucks shipped, they do sell this in other colors, blue/red i know ive seen on there. Great case doesnt add alot to the phone, quality stuff.

I got my Seidio Active yesterday and love the case. It's light but still tough enough to protect the phone in case of a drop. It raises the camera and screen off whatever surface you lay it on and also covers volume/power buttons. Would highly recommend!
+1; I owned an HTC Inspire 4G before I left AT&T for Sprint, and I had a Casemate Tough Case on that, which I loved. Since Casemate didn't make that case for the Nexus S 4G, I settled on the Seidio, and fell in love with it. Now I have one on my Epic 4G Touch, and I couldn't be happier. I was worried about my phone not fitting in the universal adjustable dash mount I have, but it fits even with the case.
This case also comes with the holster option, right? If so, does anyone have the holster? I ordered the device and have been lookimg for a case to purchase.

I ordered Mine after I ordered My E4GT, Got My case in the mail 2 days after I got the phone, Love how it Protects my phone and actually doesn't add too much bulk plus it adds grip so the phones not slipping every which way. It was either this or the Surface, which I have had a bad experience with when I had my EVO 4G, lets just say I'm glad that the silicon won't scratch the phones case unlike the hard shell of the surface.

I got an Active case and holster for my dad for an HTC that he's got, and finally tracked down one on eBay for $30 (used/unused - accidental purchase by original owner) for my Sammy. Just got it today, and while it seems like the rubber part might attract a little lint, I think I'm going to be very happy with my purchase.

Yeah at first the case does collect a bit of dust but in like 2 weeks it will stop being like that mine only collects bits of dust under the hard plastic part now and not on the silicon you can see
