I am trying to install twrp on my kindle fire. the KFU (kindle fire utility) is not working for me., I manually installed the ADB driver since i thought the driver_install.bat wasnt working. it still refuse to do what i thought was a fairly simple process. here is what i have done so far, i will list it to help rule out the issue.
- Used the KFU like normal. (retried by un-installing the driver in devicemanager)
- Used the KFU like normal and rebooting my desktop and Kindle Fire.
- Used the KFU on a laptop with a fresh copy of windows 7.
- Manually installed the driver and tried using the KFU. (un- installed driver and tried again) also did this on the laptop with fresh windows 7.
- Manually Installed the driver and rebooting desktop and kindle fire. (also tried on laptop with fresh copy of windows 7 and with all updates.
- installed JAVA JDK and then Andriod SDK and tried that method (both on desktop and laptop.)
- threaten kindle fire with hammer.
- gave it a night and hoping it would work the next day.
im basicly wanting to get this to work. So please can someone help me?
i just want ICS back on it and maby try 4.1 once its ready for everyday use.
If their is antoher way please tell me and/or link it.
Thank you and have a nice day.
So, I've found an array of guides both on and off the forums and I've followed a host of them. I am trying to obtain root and Superuser via Kindle Fire Utility. I've installed the drivers a number of ways including through the Android SDK, KFU and by unplugging and plugging it back in. Apparently the drivers are installed correctly because when I check in the device manager, the Kindle is listed as Android Phone and then under the dropdown as Android ADB Interface. However, no matter what I do, when I run the run.bat file in KFU the device is listed as offline and whenever I try to do the adb list the Kindle isn't showing up there either. I believe it is because I get a syntax error whenever I launch KFU before the actual KFU screen up saying that the location C:\User\.android doesn't exist. So, I'll list all the steps that I can remember I've done over the past 16 hours or so.
1) Downloaded the Android SDK and Java JDK (I think it's called...either way, I have updated JRE and DK)
2) Unplugged the Kindle Fire which is firmware 6.3.1 which was listed as Kindle in device manager and ran the install_drivers.bat file.
3) Confirmed via device manager that the fire is actually listed as Android ADB Interface
4) Did an adb kill
5) Deleted drivers once confirmed KFU couldn't find the device online
6) Reinstalled drivers via the KFU drivers folder
7) Repeated steps 3-5 then reinstalled the drivers via the Android SDK provided USB driver file
8) Repeated steps 3-5
And now I'm at a loss, I have no idea what else to do. I've rooted multiple phones as well as gotten homebrew running on Wii's and PSP's but this one is stumping me. Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Also, please don't kneejerk response and send me back to the thread explaining how to get the drivers running via KFU because I've done every step of that to no avail and I honestly believe the problem lies somewhere in the syntax error I get referring to the lack of a C:\User\.android folder.
Thanks in advance for your help
That's because your drivers are incorrect it should be android adb composite interface... sounds like your using xp and its the complete worst for driver installs...
my suggestion is this build your own little system with this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850038 then do the task manually all you need to do is have twrp and fff the rest is entirely obsolete if you intend to just flash a rom anyway.. for the purposes of learning what to do and how to do it read these http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552547 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1638452 they will give you some needed insight.. jcase`s manual rooting tutorial can be found here but like i said flash a rom all roms are rooted http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568340
Thank you for the response, I am not using XP, I am using Windows 7 Home Premium.
I don't have Linux although I suppose I could use a USB drive or USB Hard drive to dual boot with Linux. Thanks again, I'll have to wait until my brother brings the Kindle back over to try this, until then I'll look over it all.
ok well usually running the install.bat for the drivers on windows 7 is enough but for some it isnt regardless drivers are you main issue and you certainly dont want to have any issues with them in the process it will only produce very bad results..
---------- Post added at 02:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:33 PM ----------
also your syntax error can be causing the issues as you say you need that .android folder to make it work...

Really needs to be in Q+A not dev.....
Try this;
Download the Android SDK and unzip it and copy the 'adt-bundle-windows' folder to your documents folder
Navigate to Documents/adt-bundle-windows/sdk/tools and run the android app - this opens the android SDK manager.
Go to tools - Manage-addon-sites and select the User defined Sites tab. Click new and add the following url
http://kindle-sdk.s3.amazonaws.com/addon.xml
Hit OK and close
Now scroll to the bottom on the SDK manager and under extras will be 2 kindle fire options 'kindle fire device definitions' and 'kindle fire USB driver' select both and install.
Now close the SDK manager.
If you have previously used your kindle on your PC, plug it in and go to device manager and un-install the drivers for it - now unplug it.
Navigate to \Documents\adt-bundle-windows\sdk\extras\amazon\kindle_fire_usb_driver and install the kindle USB drivers
Now add the location of the ADB.exe file to your path
You should now be able to plug in your kindle and execute adb devices and see your kindle - that means your good to go.

I downloaded the SDK and it didn't have a 'adt bundle' in the contents but i ran sdk manager and I had already added the link you mentioned and I also had already added the extras you mentioned earlier from a article I read and Nothing so I stumbled across this article and it had a few extra steps so I thought to give it a try only problem is, When I go to my device manager to uninstall the kindle drivers i don't have that option to uninstall a 'kindle' driver rite below it there's a android adb interface and i have the option there to uninstall but before I did so I wanted to post here what's going on with me. I wonder if it worked for the person who started the post?

Worked perfectly and allowed me to root using the other guide in the forum.
Posted using my Kindle Fire 2.
Are you using the adb from the latest sdk?
I couldn't get adb to recognise my kf2 until I used the latest adb.exe
I rooted my both kindle´s before a week.
no idea why the other driver did not work.
The Driver from http://kindle-sdk.s3.amazonaws.com/addon.xml work perfectly.
I had this same issue until I updated the driver with the latest. I don't have it in front of me, but when I looked at it, it's dated approx Dec 8th 2012 in Device Manager. Update the driver to the latest and you should be good to go.
know that if you install the drivers after connect your kindle it can mess it up, if you go into device manager and uninstall the drivers after you've disconnected you're kindle and install them then reconnect it, it should work.

Powerpoint is so right here, If you use any linux distribution, it's going to be much easier to get your kindle connected to adb.
Do we even have a q&a or general section for this device? Bought, rooted and turned into a tablet today

Good luck!
This probly isnt the right place for this but I have been to so many areas and so many websites that I am crosseyed now. I managed to root my kindle the other day and was attempting to install a mod on it. At this point I cant even remember which site I was on to share the steps I took. Needless to say, I messed up and now the kindle boots to to the logo for a few seconds, shuts off and boots back to the logo, over and over. I'm not very good at all this but not completely stupid either. I'm simply ready to pull my hair out. I have installed Android SDK and am having trouble getting the correct drivers for my kindle apparently. Its a kindle fire hd 2012. I went through all the trouble of installing the sdk and got to the part with the addons and manually putting in the amazon site, only to read on and discover its no longer supported so I can not get the different kindle fire definitions. In my device manager, it shows kindle fire and expanded shows Android ADB Interface (no composite.. does it matter?). I have verified that abd is installed and working, but doing a devices command, doesnt show any devices. It executes without errors, just doesnt list anything. I have a fastboot cable and it does currently say Fastboot on the kindle when I plug it in.. thats all it says tho, is it supposed to go any further then those words?
I have tried so many suggestions on here to get it to see my kindle to no avail. I follow tutorials, that seem to link to other tutorials because the previous ones had prerequisites and THOSE have links for downloads that no longer work and so I do a side load of a webpage trying to find the missing download I need and THOSE pages end up leading me somewhere else or going a different route then the previous tutorial took me and I just CAN'T get anywhere with this! It shouldnt be this hard (and I'm venting at this point so I apologize). Does anyone have an UPDATED (2018) tutorial for getting my kindle back to where it will boot up... assuming my computer will ever see it (windows 7 btw). Thanks in advance.
Hi All,
Today I should be picking up a KF2 (Kindle Fire 2nd Gen) today from a friend. And although I have experience with this device in the past, as I rooted one a while ago, and installed Google PlayStore bits and bobs for another friend... This was a while back.
A few months back, I read somewhere although cannot find it now... That Amazon have rolled out a serious Update to most Kindles (KF2, KF-HD, and possibally KF-HDX) that has updated the baseband/kernel to a certain version. Which prevents Unlocking, and tampering with it could cause the device to Hard Brick...
So was wondering, what is the best procedure to tackle this? Easy method to Root / Recovery??
And what does this 2nd BootLoader actually do?? Does it allow you to DualBoot both original stock Kindle firmware as well as second partition for Custom Roms??
Thanks, Lister
OK first off which kindle do you have, because a kf2 is. Of a 2nd gen kfhd. If its a 2013 kindle fire HD, don't bother with second bootloader because it will just brick it. If it is in fact a kf2 then here's what second d bootloader does. Basically we can't unlock our devices bootloader so 2nd bootloader is a workaround. It allows us to run our own unsigned kernels and custom recovery. Once we have that we can flash a custom ROM like cm. And no no dual booting, Amazon's os is too different from cm to be able to.
To install 2nd bootloader + twrp you must be rooted, suggest kindle fire first aid for that, there's a tutorial in the dev section for kf2 for installing second bootloader + twrp here.
Make sure you check the md5sum of the bootloader before flashing it so you don't risk hard bricking, also I suggest putting the ROM and its gapps on the kindle ahead of time if your are running 10.4.8 because it will boot loop into recovery after the process until you flash a different rom, so its easier to have the ROM o. Ahead of time rather than "adb push" it.

Hi @stunts513,
Sorry for the delay getting back to you, my friend didnt bring the device in until yesterday...
I can confirm that it is a Kindle Fire 2nd Gen (Otter2), and it is running 10.4.6 firmware/baseband...
I tried to root it in work, on my Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 based PCs, and unfortunately it wasn't detecting it, or working with the ADB drivers....
I tried at home on my Windows XP and Vista setup, and again wasn't detecting it. However it did detect on my Windows 7 setup at home (triple boot). This must of been the partition I used for my friends one many months ago... (although I found various Kindle related files on each partition).
Anyway, I got the damn thing rooted now, thankfully... and shall move onto the 2nd Bootloader thing... However, is there any other way, or easy way of doing this other than whats in that post?? I don't mind doing it, and will follow it again. However late last night I was losing the will to live as it was hard work getting to do things... (compared to other Android devices that are a breeze to do...).
I tried to backup my partitions on the Kindle what it says to do at the start, and it kept saying it couldnt find these on the Kindle... I read in the guide that it said I could download them from a website, but all I could see was scripts and not backup partitions... Is it really important to backup my own ones, or could I just download someone else's Kindle Fire 2nd (8Gb) model??
And yeah, is there any other way to get custom recovery / rom on, other than the original guide...?? - not gonna give up, just last night kept falling asleep trying to follow it... when things werent working and patiently waiting for things to happen/work... lol
Anyway, thanks so much for replying to my question, and for all the help you have given me to get me started... much appreciated!!
Thanks, Lister

As far as i know offhand that method for the kf2 is the only method, which is kinda sad because its the same manual method as the other hd's, and the hd's have fireflash, but fireflash never had the support added in for the kf2 for some reason last i checked. I wouldn't worry too much about the backups, once you run the dd command on the partitions to store them on the sdcard folder, then even if adb pull doesn't work you can always copy them over mtp. i don't like how adb pull works on windows. Only image i would be concerned with storing is the boot0block.
If i made some incorrect references its probably because i vaguely remember it maybe having a different command than the hd model, but the hd's backup command would work on a kf2 as well.
Hi @stunts513,
Just wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
With your help, you have helped me accomplish what seemed like a scary trip to KindleFire Bricks'ville...
But thanks to you, I am all rooted, TWRP'd and ready to go... Shall flash a rom, and sort dads Birthday Pressie now...
Really appreciated, top guy!! thank you... Lister

Rooting KF2
Can you give a list of the links that you used to root you KF2?
I've tried to connect to my with ADB but I can't get it to see my device. I can connect my KF2 to my WINXP machine, and transfer files, but I can't get ADB to recognize the device, and I can't get any root options to work. Any help would be appreciated. Ultimately I would like to install a new ROM like CM, but until I can do the basics, I can't get that done.
You should check to see if it has the driver installed for adb in the device manager, if it doesn't even show up as a adb device in device manager you probably haven't turned USB debugging on on the kindle itself.

Checked and verified that USB debugging is in fact turned on on my kindle.
Settings>>Security>>Enable ADB is ON.
Settings>>Device>>Allow Installation of Applications is ON
I still can't get adb to recognize my device.
I installed ADB from adt-bundle-windows-x86-20140321.zip if that makes any difference.
I had read in the forums that I might need a special cable for fastboot. Is that what I'll need to get?
For what it's worth, I just found and followed this tutorial:
EDIT: Well crap, this forum won't let me post the outside url. I guess if you search for "Setting up ADB driver for Kindle Devices" by David Isbitski" on developer dot amazon dot com, you will be able to find the tutorial
It was very helpful, and it was the first tutorial I've found that actually showed how to install adb windows drivers for the kindle fire.
In windows Device Manager >> Portable Devices >> Kindle is installed, then uninstall Kindle, as they are the wrong drivers.
In the SDK Manager
Go to TOOLS >> Manage Add On Sites
Go to the User Defined Sites tab
add the url found in the tutorial listed above, save and quit that window.
Back at the manager, do "Packages >> Reload" to update the list.
For the kindle fire 2nd generation, I had to expand "Android 4.0.3 (API 15) to find and install:
"Kindle Fire 2nd Generation"
Under Extras, install:
Amazon AVD Launcher (Windows)
Kindle Fire Device Deffinitions
Kindle Fire USB Driver
Once installed go to \extras\amazon\kindle_fire_usb_driver and run "KindleDrivers.exe"
You should then find "Device Manager >> Kindle Fire >> Android Cmposite ADB Interface"
You can then stop/start adb, then do a adb devices.
That is what worked for me!
New to the forum and trying to recognize what you are doing here......
I have a Kindle Fire 2nd Gen with 10.4.8 SW installed. Would like to dump a much newer Android version on it and looking for the correct path.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I was trying the method to do FFF and TWRP without factory cable.
I was able to successfully Root and get into fast boot.
I had not found the method for using Windows at this point so I was trying to use soupkit. (Finally figured out that you have to change permissions on the soupkit.sh to run as executable) In doing this I was trying to install Linux (which I've never used), tried Mint as suggested but was having trouble, moved to Umbuntu and during this time the Fire was in fast boot plugged in via USB so it seemed fine. This was over the course of a few days, on the last day while I was at work my wife or son move the laptop and Fire and the cable was unplugged so the Fire went dead.
Now it appears to be in a boot loop? The Kindle Fire flashes on then the screen turns off and it just repeats this. I left it unplugged for several days going it would discharge and boot but it seems to be stuck in this loop. I'm running Win 7 Home Premium and Linux, neither one can see the Kindle on the USB.
Is this thing a brick now or is there and way to recover? I don't have the factory cable but would gladly order one if it would help get passed this point.
Sorry so long, just trying to provide all info on my situation.
Thanks if you can help.
Did you retry the
adb shell
su
cd /data/local/tmp
./fbmode
exit
exit

Discharging battery is a very bad idea
see Frequently Asked Questions - Amazon Kindle Fire
Q30: Is it true that letting the battery die will reset the device and fix whatever problem I'm experiencing?
NO!!! NO!!! NO!!! NO!!! The flash memory storage of the Kindle Fire is capable of holding data without ANY power until your grandchildren's grandchildren have their own grandchildren...probably even longer. Not to mention, a dead battery will cause much bigger problems than you ever had to begin with, on top of the problems you had to begin with. Whatever problem you're dealing with, it is always best to avoid letting the battery die at all costs.
Q31: Why is my boot logo flashing every 5-10 seconds?
You have a near dead battery. The most effective way fix it is to power the device down by holding the power button for 10 seconds, plug the device into a power source, then IMMEDIATELY hold the power button until it shuts off again. If it shuts off and stays off (no display, no led), let it charge for at least half a day. Otherwise keep trying, or get another battery.

for KitKat use TWRP 2.6.3.0 or newer, for Jellybean use 2.2.2.1--2.6.2.x
OtterX Roms require special step posted here OtterX ROM/TWRP/Bootloader [TWRP 2.7.1 2014-06-08]
Other Roms can just be installed in twrp like in [Video] How to install CM10.1 Jelly Bean 4.2.2 on the Kindle fire
Roms are posted here [INDEX] Kindle Fire Development
easiest way to change TWRP versions is use a flashable TWRP.zip from my list Kindle Fire Flashable Recoveries TWRP/COTR/CWM[2014]
Devices hangs at splash screen

I am having the same problem but my battery was almost fully charged. After I completed Step 5, and then entered the commands for step 6, the device just hangs at the kindle fire splash screen. After an hour or so at that point, I unplugged the device from my PC and when I plug it back in, it isn't listed correctly in the Device Manager. I am running Windows 8.1. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

I didn't get to try this but was ready to if needed.
As a follow up, I was able to hook up to a higher output charger and left it that way for a good hour and it came back on to what looked like fastboot.
In Windows I opened cmd and was able to push recovery in fastboot & got in to TWRP. I wanted to install CM11 OtterX so I followed the post that Hash has out.
Flashed the updated Bootloader and rebooted per the instructions but now it wouldn't get back into TWRP and couldn't boot into rom and ADB wouldn't connect.
After days of reading I decided to try the EEC Fix in the bootloader, that was successful and it put me in the new Fastboot screen. Once there I was able to connect in ADB and push the files to the SD card and got into TWRP, followed the instructions again from that basic point, converted the format from Amazon and was finally successful in getting the CM11 installed and booted.
Looking through the info I found an OTA from CM and now am running 4.4.4
Very excited to have a real tablet instead of the Fire OS.
Thanks for everyone's help. Reading and persistence pays off.
I did a reboot, but it is staying at the Kindle Fire boot logo. It is not proceeding past that to anything fastboot related. I ran the fastboot devices command and then I ran the command to push the recovery, but it is just sitting there at waiting for devices.
Also, when the device rebooted to get into fastboot, Windows 7 said it was unable to install the driver for it.
Any help would be awesomely appreciated!
Never mind! I figured it out by installing the driver that came with KFU.
If I want to install a KitKat ROM, what is my next step? I don't want you to explain me everything, but if you could lead me to another post or something, I would be grateful!

use the drivers from the KFU, in the updated the op.
fastboot commands will not work if drivers are not correct.

Which ROMs do you recommend? I'm trying to set this up for my brother-in-law, and I want to make sure it is going to be something remotely stable.
Thank you for your help by the way.
