General How "standalone" is your watch? Especially the LTE watch - Google Pixel Watch

If you theoretically destroyed your phone (wiped it, broke it, sold it, etc), what would stop working on the watch?
As far as I'm aware the watch can:
1. update on its own
2. install apps on its own and/or with ADB
3. Make and receive calls on its own
And other updates/app functionalities, such as adding contacts, can be done on a laptop. Is there anything specific to teh phone, like setting notification sounds or alarms that you'd say are essential?
Thanks

All honesty I think it may be just Fitbit which I use it but can live without it but will say for the most part all apps update and download straight to the watch without phone

I do not receive any Gmail notifications, but other than that, if my phone would be destroyed, I would be able to receive/send
phone calls
whatsapp messages
telegram messages
sms

SMS-like or SMS replacement software options

My wife and I both now have WM phones (mine is a Tilt 2, hers a Pure) and we don't want to spend money on text messages to each other, since each text message would count twice... once for her receiving and once for me sending. (on a pay per use plan it would be $0.40 each!).
I was looking for other options. Push email is o.k. but often times there can be a minute or more delay, and my early tests of push gmail are not producing any confidence that it would push reliably.
So then I was thinking IM. It looks like IM programs would be battery hogs, and have to stay running in the background, and could easily be accidentally closed. Also, when the phone goes to sleep it seems like they then switch you to "offline".
So am I missing something? What are my sms like, non sms options?
Also does anyone have any small programs that would set up a auto-soft reset on a repeating schedule, it would be great if I could start the morning with a fresh phone. Thanks.

Yes, any non-sms messaging app for your phone would obviously use data (3G or EDGE connection) to communicate, and would need to be left on all the time to be able to receive incoming messages and notify you in real-time...so battery drain would be in direct proportion to that.
The best solution I've ever seen for that is Palringo, a free IM-integrator app that can connect you through most of the common IM networks (yahoo, AIM, Google talk, etc), or just direct through it's own (if I remember correctly)...meaning that as long as you and she both have the palringo client installed, you don't necessarily have to use any of those services to be able to IM each other. It's also free, and I seem to recall that it can be set (but isn't by default) to stay connected even when the phone goes to sleep, but don't quote me on that part.
It would be great if one of these programs had a "listening" service that would run in the background and then notify you of the "call" similar to an email.
I have seen a few online, (my research has just begun) that indicates "push notifications". Sound interesting, the data connection would remain active all the time that does not bother me.
I seem to have lost the setting to switch the "x" button from close to minimize. That would solve the issue with accidental closing the program. It would have to be managed via the task manager.. no biggy.. and then if I can find a soft reset scheduler it would keep the open programs from overwhelming the phone.

it's the other way around. default for winmo is minimize, there is
an htc bundled app called taskman. it's in settings - task manager which is making apps close when you click X
plenty of other apps can change that too
and then if I can find a soft reset scheduler it would keep the open programs from overwhelming the phone.

i made myself app doing change on backlight settings every morning and evening, I changed it for you to do reset

thoughts on Mango 7720

Alrite, I've installed mango on my samsung focus.
It is AWESOME. But, there are some things I just don't understand why they are made that way.
1) push notifications
you need to install separate facebook and twitter apps to get those. even though u get your notifications in your me tile, you dont get push notifications when a new notification comes in. For now, I just had facebook and twitter apps installed to get push notifications and use me tile to actually check it when i get a notification. It works.
2) Facebook chat - this is far more annoying
when I am chatting on facebook, all the messages I receive would also go to my phone which makes it run riot. it would be beeping for every single message I receive. This NEEDs to be fixed before mango is actually released. I am not sure if it is on facebook end or msft's.. It might be facebook since they shouldn't be pushing messages to phone app when the other channel (such as the desktop browser) is open and connected.
3) Is it possible for third party developers to add more messaging channels to the stock messaging app? messaging such as google talk, skype, anything.... it would be really really cool if the messaging hub handle all those too...
4) this might be just personal preference.. But, It takes too long to wait for the live tiles to flip IMO.. The possible solution would be bringing the double click over to windows phone.
Single clicking the live tile will flip it. And double click to launch the application. I think it would be pretty awesome.
1. I dont get it too.
2. You are signed in on your phone on both Windows Live and Facebook chat. You can go offline if you dont want to receive fb chats on your phone.
3. Deep integration is microsofts job. Skype may come in as a separate app later this year or next year, or it might be integrated with the messaging hub in the next update.
1. You DO get push notifications via the Me tile. Sounds like what you are looking for are toast notifications once the push notifications update your notifications in your Me tile. Toast notifications are a great idea that I'm sure Microsoft is well aware of or had a reason for not putting in at this point in time.
2. Nothing to do with Windows Phone 7 or Mango. This is how chat generally works. You sign in on multiple places, you get your chats in all those places. You just need to sign out if you don't want to get messages on your other devices. Considering Mango is done, the behavior is not going to change, and really, this is one of Facebook's selling points on their chat system, how its available everywhere and how you can just pick up and go no matter what device you are using.
3. Unfortunately, there is no API for Messaging for third parties. Microsoft probably has the power there.

That is not how google talk works... which is why I thought it might be on facebook's end. If you use google talk, let's say you sign in to two computers at the same time, you will start to get notifications when someone send you initial messages. But, when you reply to the message from either computer, it will stop sending newer messages to the other computer. I think it is great for security purposes too since noone can be eavesdropping your conversation on the other machine.
Facebook's selling point is that you can stay connected on every device.. But, I dont think that means every device has to be ringing for every message. It would make more sense if the message is delivered to intended person at the most available channel..

[Q] Google Talk Not updating?

When I had the Razr before the Nexus, the Google Talk kept constantly updated in real time. With the Nexus, conversations would stop updating as soon as I exit the Google Talk screen, and they would only update again when someone responds to me, not even when I message them.
I've looked under google talk settings, no dice
I've looked under the nexus settings, can't find anything
Can someone help me out here?
I'm also new to phones, but I use Gtalk more than any other app, was wondering if we can make a widget for it?
I did in fact find a homebrew widget for Google Talk, but it didn't refresh in real time either and I didn't find it very useful otherwise.
Nowadays I just keep my screen on and open on Google Talk, but that sucks up batteries and I'd just rather learn how to get Google Talk to stay connected

Google Talk is my main means of communication it seems so I have played with it a lot. Here are my observations.
1. To keep it "up" all the time in the Talk App hit the menu button (three dots now) >settings>uncheck automatic away status. Also make sure your phone has automatic syncing turned on for your gmail account: Setting>Accounts and Sync>ON (for your chat gmail address anyway). Additionally make sure your mobile data is turned on if you are ever off wifi: Settings>More>Mobile networks>Data Enabled (checked to turn on)
2. You can have up to 6 devices linked to your talk account at once, after that they just stop working.
3. When you receive a IM it appears on both your phone and your gmail account. If you start typing on the gmail account (or G+) it hijacks the whole session and you phone no longer gets the notifications, but the conversation still shows up on the chat window on the phone. When you are done with the IM session make sure you close the window on gmail (or G+) and send one last message from your phone or tablet to take the session back over, if you don't your phone will not receive future chat notifications. You can also just log out of your gmail/G+ session and it will automatically return everything to your phone/tablet but who ever does that?
4. To figure out how it all worked and tinker with it I use both of my gmail accounts and chat back and forth with them. You can do it from separate browsers or just open an incognito window in Chrome and log into your other gmail account. I would recommend this so you can see all of this stuff in practice.
Good Luck, hope this helps.

First of all, thank you for the detailed response, it's the most I've received so far and I thank you for your effort. On that note, I've played with all 3 of these settings before and they've been right for a few weeks now.

I have my computer and this phone linked to the talk account, that's it.
And here's where it differs from your experiences I think, with my RAZR, the phone DID in fact keep up to date with whatever conversation happened on my computer. Weird thing with the Nexus is, it just ... completely stops working, and doesn't update when I have a conversation online, that's the weirdest part, because when I use the Phone gchat again, a flood of updates stream in, and that takes a lot of time... and it doesn't even get it all.
Funny story, I had a fight with my gf and she tried to use a piece of gchat conversation on my phone as defense... and she couldn't find it

I'm doing almost the exact same setup with my SGSII. I go back and forth between Talk on the phone, the Talk app on my PC, and super rarely on the Xoom.
For me, when I'm using the phone, the PC app does NOT get updated. It only stores what I do with it. The phone app however gets EVERYTHING. If I'm talking on the PC, when I pick the phone up and check the conversation, its perfectly up to date.
I'm posting here, because I've got the GN ordered, and of course will be using Talk on it alot.
On another note, have you tried an aftermarket app for IM's? Maybe it will work better? After looking around, and reading some reviews I grabbed IMO chat off the market, but I haven't tried it yet....

Galaxy Watch notifications for what's app

Hi Everyone,
Requesting some help for an issue that I am facing with my galaxy watch. Not able to receive ONLY what's app notifications on the watch. All other app notifications work fine ( Messages, emails, weather or any other app that gives me notifications ) works good.
1. Looked for all settings related to notifications on the phone and watch. All look fine unless I have missed out something important related to whats app.
2. Reset the gear watch but that didn't help either
3. Uninstalled and reinstalled what's app just to make sure but that didn't work too.
Running out of ideas and looking for suggestion please.
I expect you have checked the Galaxy Wearable settings menu entry notifications list of apps and found (or not found) the What's app ?

Hi,
Yes, I have selected all apps in notifications and still same issue. I just also noticed that it doesn't work for Facebook notifications too, not too sure if that helps but thought of mentioning it. I have tried all settings possible on the watch and the phone, reset the watch but unfortunately it didn't work.
Working notifications :- Messages, Emails, weather, calls, alarms
Non working :- Facebook, whats app and some other 3rd party apps. I understand that some 3rd party apps may not have native support but ya, thats my current status.
Thank you for trying to help and please suggest if any other idea.

I assume that you do get notifications on your phone for the apps in question - otherwise, you have to adjust the setting for those.

Hi,
I had enabled them on the phone but the same issue. Thank you for your time though. Something completely unexpected at least for me that helped me resolve the issue and frankly I don't understand how. So here is how it worked, I am currently travelling and purchased a SIM that I inserted in the primary slot of my phone and the default SIM I always use is in the secondary. I swapped and that resolved my issue. I don't even know if that is related and I should have known about it but thankfully helped me end my worries and some ridiculous amount of time I spent resolving it.
Thank you again. You have a good one !

Remove / Disable Google and MI bloat apps

Hello everyone,
I'm used to the LineageOS on my previous phone and now I've upgraded recently to this phone but I feel my personal info too much available to Google and MI system apps and I don't want that, thats why I went to LineageOS on my previous phone but, like others custom firmwares, it have several bugs which limits the potential of the phone.
Even not using an google account I can feel my life is being spied because a few things happen:
- if someone calls me, a friend or whatever, and its not in my contacts list it asks me if its spam. For what? To send the info somewhere using the internet connection and warns others if its spam? If it reads my contacts for this it can read those for anything, like copy my whole contacts list which I'm not comfortable with and I'm not able to control. I'm afraid that later if i use the regular browser to access Gmail for instance, I'm afraid the OS is prepared to warn google that all the info that' I've shared so far belongs to that particular Google account and that phone IMEI is also used but that account. I'm crazy? Maybe, but all this is possible and I want to make it impossible.
- If i do not allow Google services from accessing my text messages APP (built-in app) i keep getting a warning from the system that something it will not go OK if I do not turn on that access from Google services. Why the hell should google services needs to access my texts? My first phone, 20 years ago, could send SMS without google, why the hell google needs to see my texts now?
The list continues but I'm not willing to loose the nice things this OS have too, but for me personal info is too valuable and I dont want to give away any information from my contacts list, SMS texts, the places I visit, my tastes and so on, all this is my personal life and no one needs to know about it, not even just for statistics. Some people on my contacts list doesn't use Android and dont want the personal phone number stored somewhere and connected to me somehow, not that Im a criminal or something like but all this combined together its like a personal "Facebook" for Google and MI to use, they know who are the persons who I connect with, who are near me at a certain period of the day, where I usually do shopping, well, all my life is being stored somewhere, and I want to end this.
Is there a way to keep the current OS and block every outgoing info coming from the phone? I've made some research and i come to this so far
- AFwall can be a solution, but how good it is?
- Removing google services is not an option using ADB, the OS will not work
- Disable google services is not working. The system keeps turning it on automatically
Please give me your feedbacks with your experiences about this security issue, I think several people feels the same way, and how did you managed a work around to this keeping the original OS.
PS: For now I didnt unlock the bootloader, but I will if the solution goes that way.
Thank you everyone
Tomalamix
Living in the age of Google, one cannot use phone & Internet without your info being collected for ad purposes or whatsoever.
Ad purposes i can live with that,. what I cant live with is my personal data being stored by a 3rd party company besides my cell operator
Ive been watching the Anti-Gapps group but it seems discontinued i guess, i think this is a task fitted for them
