When flashing to a new rom, is it needed for me to completely wipe the phone to Factory reset?
Reason why I am asking is because I have everything placed into folders and located where I want them and when I flashed the rom I had to get everything back (Titanium Backup) but I would still have to put the settings how I liked them, the apps into folders, align the folders, have my home screen how I liked it (which took about 2 hours).
Someone said just use the .data file (and restore that after i have flashed to the ROM i want) I have when I backup my Rom before flashing. Basically, factory reset, install new rom, wipe cache, fix permissions. After I reboot, I go back into recovery, go to advanced restore and JUST RESTORE THE /DATA? Will this work?
Supposedly you can restore the Touchwiz settings by restoring the data component of the app after factory resetting and flashing your new ROM.
...I migrated away from Touchwiz some time ago and am using GoLauncher. One of the features it offers is the ability to backup/restore its settings independently. I also find that when I restore it from a Titanium backup it brings back the location of each item on each desktop screen.
One limitation is that neither way will restore widgets. This is apparently a limitation built into Android. If you have lots of widgets you'll need to make note of which ones were placed on which screens and recreate them after flashing.

That's the main thing, I tried to search it but did nto find anything definitive on it. The thing I don't like about Go Launcher and Launcher Pro is that I can't really arrange what I want in folders and label them the folders either. That just leads to a large clutter in apps.
Any thoughts?
I have folders in the app drawer and on the desktops with the latest version of golauncher

I like go launcher. Only questions is when backing up, where does it save (I know is says saved to SD but I can't find it in the files to move to the SD card for when I will FLash the phone to a different Rom)?
Also, how much RAM does this take? Does anyone ever use a task manager to close out of apps? It seems that a lot of apps run even when I havent even opened them in weeks.
what's everyone's experience with using the /data technique? Also, does anyone notice a battery drainage use golauncher?
I am running ICS 4.04 on SCH-I515. I already unlocked the bootloader and I am currently rooted. I am not using the verizon ROM, I believe I am currently using a regular AOSP build.
I want to upgrade to Jelly Bean when its available but I know that flashing it will erase everything. What can I use to back up everything so when I upgrade to JB I will be able to restore everything. I am hoping to be able to restore contacts, apps, settings, configurations for apps.....maybe even home screen setups?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check out rom toolbox pro in play store. It'll backup those things and more. Titanium backup is another popular choice for apps and data, but I don't think it backups sms, contacts, settings, etc like rom toolbox does.
Before anything make a android if anything should go wrong you can restore. For messages I suggest SMS Backup and Restore found in the play store. For apps and all that use titanium backup and restore app+data on jellybean which will import all settings and data the application had on the original backup. Contacts should have been backed up to the Google servers so you don't really have to worry about that, once you sign in to jellybean for the first time your contacts will be completely restores automatically. Home screens not possible , to my knowing, unless you use a third party launcher such as Nova which let's you backup home screens.

icon placement can be backed up through titanium if you backup the launcher. Widgets wont restore though with any launcher. Except possibly Nova.

titanium backup. Only certain launchers can back up your home screen stuff. Like apex.
Mandated from Stannis Baratheon
Cool I already use Titanium backup, so looks like I am covered on everything other then home screens. If I were to change to nova launcher that would mean I would have to re do my home screens anyway.
I'm looking for a software that can backup everything on my phone. Actually I use AppBacup&Restore. But I want something that restore my application, widget, and folder on my homescreen. I tryed Titaniu but I'm not familiar with it.
Any suggestion?
I've always preferred my backup root over titanium. From memory it backs up widgets and home screen shortcuts but I haven't used it in months and not 100% certain

Your screen layouts should be determined by your launcher. Which means if you restore your launcher data, everything should be as is. I know some of the launchers have their own backup/restore, but how much of that is just basic configuration (themes, actions) vs screen\widget layout may vary.

I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question

Ok. Thanks.
If you're looking to back up your apps +their data, then titanium backup is your answer. If you search "top root Apps for Android" in Google, you will undoubtedly see it in the top of every list, and there's good reason for that. It's extremely reliable and works well. If you have a rooted phone and don't mind shelling out 6 dollars for all the features, then go for it. Some other features that the app gives you are: freezing apps, un installing apps including system apps, backing your backups to a cloud, backing up your sms/mms/call logs/Internet bookmarks/wifi aps, extracting from nandroid backup, destroying market links/re-linking, converting apps to system apps and more.
If you want to backup everything (apps, data, your rom and kernal etc), then you use nandroid backup, which is free but requires you to flash cwm recovery.
Titanium backup will backup home screen , folder, short cut except widgets ( I think no SW backup widgets and it just matter of few seconds)
Here is detail guide how to use titanium

On a 2013 LTE Nexus 7 with the latest 5.0.2 installed, my home button doesn't work. The back and recent apps buttons work fine, but the home button doesn't do anything. Like the rest of the buttons, it responds to touch with an animation, but it doesn't take me home, ever, and it also doesn't launch Google Search on hold. I've read in other posts that there should be a "Home" menu option in Settings under the Device section, but I don't have that either. Another oddity, quick settings pulldown from the status bar isn't working. I can pull down the notification tray, but cannot pull down the quick settings above it.
Doing some tinkering of my own, I can tell you the following:
Wiping the data partition resolves the problem, but I'm trying to keep my user accounts, home screens, apps intact, hence my continued search for solution
Using a different launcher (Google Now Launcher via Play Store), the home button works fine but I'd rather use the default system Launcher
Reflashing the factory system image doesn't resolve the problem
There are no force close error messages
Clearing data/cache for the Launcher app doesn't resolve the problem
Clearing all cached data (through the storage menu option within settings, for each user) also doesn't resolve the problem
I have been tinkering (root, multirom, etc) but right now I'm on a fresh, unrooted factory system image, but with my "dirty" data partition (I'm trying to keep my user accounts, home screens, apps intact)
Any ideas of what might be upsetting the Launcher app? Next steps?
Same here.
I haven't tried your entire list, but I've done a few of them. Oddly, when i hit "recent apps", i can then hit "home" and it works. But that's the only time. And my notifications seem to be dead, as well as quick settings...
Background: I'm all stock. I got a system update notice for 5.1.1, which i was pretty sure i already had. So while checking my current OS version, I ended up verifying that i was up to date already. Shortly thereafter, the home button stopped responding and the tablet froze up. I can't remember if it rebooted by itself or if i had to long press the home button to get it to turn off. But when it came back on, it's like everything went factory reset (all the homescreens returned to factory), but all my apps are still there in the app drawer, but they all act as if i just installed them. I have to go into them and re-login to all of them and change all their settings to how i like them. And the homescreens will need to be redone. And the "home" button and notifications still don't work. Tried Nova, but that doesn't fix any of the issues for me. I may try the Google Now Launcher next.
It looks like ahoyboyhoy has tried flashing factory image and it doesn't help, so i'm not going to factory reset if I'll be stuck in the same situation in the end.
To follow up on *my* experience with this problem, I ended up having to format the data partition, so basically a full factory reset. After that, everything was back to normal and I restored apps from a backup.
Backup question

Thanks for the update! Were you stock? If so, what was the best way you found to do a backup/restore of apps? Did it handle app data? I tried using Helium a few years ago on an HTC device, but I ran into problems that couldn't be overcome. Does Android's built-in backup option work well? I never have had good app data recovery with the buil-in option...

I was stock rooted and I think I used My Backup Pro. Not sure if you need a paid version or root access to backup app data, but I was able to back up apks+data and although it wasn't as seamless as a TWRP backup, it was better than doing things manually.
hi guys,
how do I backup the setup, layout of my home screens on the galaxy s6 and galaxy s5.

Hi Kevin.
Welcome to the forums. Unfortunaly the only way I know to back up touchwiz (which I'm assuming your using) is to be rooted and use titanium backup. (Or do a nandroid backup of the whole system)
If you were to use another launcher such as nova . they normally have a backup function built in.
Another idea i heard people use is to just take a screenshot of the layout then set it as your wallpaper and Aline all your icons with it manually.
Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any other questions.
titanium back up can back up the touch wiz layout???
I haven't tried this because I haven't need it, but using Helium, you can backup most apps without root, I think the one you need to backup is App launcher (it has a House Icon), I think that one should be Touchwiz backup, I may be wrong though.
