Optimal kernel for stock android?
Which android do you recommend & which kernel allows 3ghz operation? I've seen it done on another device, why not the s9+ snapdragon 845?
Thanks

I want to understand these better.
What are they?
When looking at the different ones what should I look for?
Any added risk when using one as apossed to using roms.?
Can I go back to a stock kernel by restoring a backup ?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I'm simplifying it a bit but the kernel is the code layer that interacts between hardware and software. Your phone is the hardware and Android (i.e. OS - ROM) is the software. The kernel defines interactions with various hardware pieces such as the CPU, the storage, and etc. Therefore to make certain optimizations or modifications such as overclocking or certain I/O tuning it can only be done by modifying the kernel.
Most of the ROMs in the development come packaged with a compatible modified kernel. You can choose to flash any other kernel that's compatibile with the ROM you have/are flashing. The compatibility is usually determined by which version of Android the ROM is based on.
The modifications that most people look for in kernels are the addition of OverClocking and Undervolting the CPU, I/O performance tweeks, and kernel related changes to improve battery life. The kernel developers usually list the enhancements they make to their kernels.
On the Galaxy Nexus Nandroid backups do include the kernel so you are safe to restore the kernel from a Nandroid backup. The stock kernel can also be flashed back in the same way a modified kernel was flashed onto the phone.
Hi guys! I just bought an Arc S, and it's totally awesome. BUT, even if I like the design of the stock ROM, it really can be improved. I always have around 60 mb of free RAM, and you can imagine the result
May I use doom kernel ( or any other kernel ) without flashing a new rom? Would I have improvements? Do I get more free ram?
Thanks in advance, I'm trying to learn everything I can about modding this phone, I had a Motorola and I spent the last months tweaking it, now it's time to start all over
If you've unlocked the bootloader, yes. Any kernel thread OP will advise what version of android the kernel will support, or if it's specifically for a certain rom(i.e. MIUI/CyanogenMod roms). Generally, custom kernels improve performance and add features not available in the stock rom such as call recording, various schedulers, overclocking and so on. Battery life tends to be better with the stock kernels though.
thanks! and specifically, if I want to stay ( for now ) with stock rom 2.3.4 which kernel would you suggest me to try? i'd like one with smartassv2 governor, i heard it's pretty good
Doomkernel is your best bet there, tbh.

Hi guys!
Since I am not allowed to post on Devs threads, I post my question here, hoping for maxio1998 to see it, or anyone related to the Jelly Sandwich Project
I own a Xperia Arc. I had it upgraded through PcCompanion, to ICS 4.0.4.
Since it was very laggy and I had little rom space available, I decided it was time for a change. I unlocked my bootloader, flashed the Advanced Stock Kernel via fastboot and flashed Jelly Sandwich 8.0 in CWM.
The situation is that my processor is not running at its full capacity, and I don't know if it's because of my kernel selection, or due to some tweaks in the custom rom I chose. The max frequency is 806 MHz.
I don't want to overclock, but having it working at its normal 1GHz would be preferred, since it has become to be laggy after a while (not as much as stock ICS, but still...)
Attached is a picture using CPU Spy +, to show the magnitude of the situation.
Is there another kernel that you would recommend?
Thanks in advance

I'm used Advanced Stock Kernel with stock firmware. Advanced Stock Kernel not supported overclock feature.
You can get "No-frills CPU Control" from google play and adjust Max. Clock freq. to 1.024 GHz.

Thanks for the piece of advice :highfive:
It seems it solved my problem. I fastbooted ArcKnight kernel and with that app I'm now able even to set it to overclock if required.
Hi,
I'm having a international Galaxy Note II GT-N7100 model and have currently 4.1.1 installed and rooted using ODIN method.
Build Number JRO03C.N7100XXALJ1. Baseband Version : N7100DXALIA. Kernel Version : 3.0.36-Perseus-alpha31.
I have installed the Perseus Kernel as shown in this thread. (Perseus-alpha31.2-n7100-CWM.zip).
1. It boosts the max cpu speed to 1800MHz. Will this decrease the CPU life in the long run? (This might be too early to comment though, taking into account the recent availability of this device, yes?)
2. Does anyone have a data on the battery drainage comparison (between this Perseus and Stock kernels)?
3. Where can I get the Stock 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 Kernels alone?
4. How to revert back to the stock kernel? Do I have to flash the complete stock rom? Or restoring from backup will do?
5. Can I bring back the max cpu speed down to 1600MHz using this Perseus Kernel?
Thanks for any information.

1. Yes it boost the cpu.. no it will not decrease cpu life WITH PROPER UNDERVOLTING in Stweaks
2.sorry I dont have data to show you but as ive experience ..my battery life increased... WITH PROPER UNDERVOLTING AGAIN in stweaks
3. Search the web
4.you can flash it and backup will also work
5. The maximum is 1600mhz in default .. you can overclock and underxloxk uaing STWEAKS
..
By the way STWEAKS is included when you flash perseus.. this is where you set what you want
n7100
omega rom v10 perseus kernel 31
hit thanks its free anyway

Thanks. What is the appropriate voltage (undervoltage) to be set for the stock 1600MHz speed? Is it the default value provided in the stweaks under CPU tab?
Thanks again.
Hi all, today I unlocked boot loader and rooted my nexus 7 2013 WiFi. At the moment I am sticking to stock ROM until I get more internet data from my ISP then I can flash a custom ROM.
Anyway what kernel would you recommended for stock KitKat 4.4.2 ROM in the mean time, or is it not worth changing and I'm better just waiting to flash custom ROM+kernel?
I was hoping for a more performance based one and would like to overclock both CPU and GPU, of course performance+battery contradict each other but if I could also have good-very good battery life and faster performance then even better.
Also what apps are you using for over clocking CPU/GPU?
Please suggest thanks

Best ROM/kernel threads are frowned upon at XDA.
As far as overclocking app, I use Tasker. I use it for setting the kernel tunables also.
kernel
I use elementalx with stock. Great performance and battery life.
