ROM in 2022 - Pixel C Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys!
I know this is the million dollar question. I've recently grabbed a Pixel C for really cheap. I used to have one back when they came out but broke and never got another one till now.
So the question now in 2022 is
-What ROM would you use for max stability and that everything or almost everything works ?
Any help will be appreciated

Funnily enough I've just dropped by to ask this! - doesn't look like you've been flooded with advice
I have just fired up my Pixel C and would like to put something more upto date on it as Oreo is looking very dated now....
Maybe the LOS ROM?

+1 for LOS. I'm using 18.1 but thinking about going to 19.1

Yeah this device is kinda dead around here but got the answer myself anyway lol. I'm using Lineage 18.1 and so far so good. It's a complete different device. Totally recommended.

Ahhh appreciate the reply - the hardware still feels pretty nice so I'm surprised its gone out of favor... don't suppose you have a guide that you used... apparently the pixel isn't easy to flash?

It's pretty easy, follow instructions for TWRP flashing and then follow instructions in LOS thread

That's actually a valid question. It's the main reason for most of us to be on xda. To get something new for our device.
As long as it hasn't been asked a few times before, I don't mind it.

I am sure it is possible, but my time with HOX is slowly running out. After 3 years with this great little device it's time for me to move on.
Here is why I think it can be done: 1 2
I have started patching the hox to the point where I can build the ROM and the kernel, but it does not yet boot.
Everything is here, for anyone to play with. May need just one small patch more ... may need a lot of further patching. I guess a lot!

NO @teemo don't leave the hox you are the last developer here. Where you think to go?
Lol, luckily there is no new device i really like, so I will hang on to HOX for a while. What I want is a phone that doesn't look like iPhone or sammy. M7,8,9 are okay, but I want more than 5 inch and form factor should be something like G3. A9 would probably be fine, but a bit too small. 9X will probably be similar to A9, if I decode llabtoofers tweets correct. M10 might be interesting, let's see. But if it keep M789s display xy proportions it's a no go.
Well, back on topic, time is my worst enemy and it's not getting better. Currently I'm settling with SlimKat, that does everything better than lollipop except occasional freezes on videos. Want to check out AICP or RR or... , but...... time.
Ah, almost forgot to mention, if nothing cool pop up, Lumia could be the way to go. I like the new one.

The lumia950 is indeed amazing!
But stay away from the G3 and G4 they have a giant problem that is called a 2k display...
These new high resolutions chokes up the gpu to the point that smooth gaming/vr are impossible and to the point where even scrolling is laggy.
RR freezes ALOT (it returns after a few mins) and just stops responding to everything(even the power button) especially while browsing.
Have you thought about z5 compact? it got a 720p screen a super camera and an extremely powerfull gpu but it is small.
form factor like an LG... How about a ZENFONE 2?
ps: What is a 9X? never heard of that phone and about the A9 you just said: "something that doesnt look like an iphone..."(even though the iphone looks like an htc and not vice versa )
The m10 will be great if it will maintain its 1080p display.
YOU ARE AWESOME! thank you for everything you have done on this device!
I think too that the one x is a fantastic and damn durable phone(drops frequently never broke and still without a scratch after 3+ years) its just the new phone's batteries are what i envy, (7+ screen hrs vs my 1.5-2 hrs)
I got a spare HTC One X, even tho I'm still a noob at being a dev but I sure learn pretty fast when i'm interested in things.
I'm going to play around with build it for a bit.

Will definitely have a look at ZenFone. Looks like Zoom is about to be released, lets see if the camera is good or sucks. Looks interesting and with 4G RAM and up to 128G internal it has potential. Not sure about Intel though.

LineageOS for Samsung S6/Samsung S6 Edge [All Varients]

Hey guys, I wanted to start on a build of LineageOS for the Samsung S6/Samsung S6 Edge that supports ALL variants (yes, including Sprint) since I notice that there is no one willing to put in a build for the device (Which is pretty much disappointing). Anyone have any idea where I can start? I don't have any extra devices lying around my house unfortunately so I can't exactly run tests on the builds without running them on my main (which poses a risk of completely messing up my phone like last time ).

Thanks for the reply! I just took a quick glance at it and it does indeed seem to be what I want.. But I'm wondering if it runs on the Sprint variant of the Samsig S6 Edge. Summary for RR
Final N build will come out when sept security patches are out
No work has started by us for O yet
When we start the work on O , main branches will be kept private till we carry out our tests
O builds will not come out for a month or maybe more
Though it does not mean individual RR developers are not working because then you also have this
https://plus.google.com/+AkhilNarang/posts/Hup1zPxKNyW
Devs are working hard to bring up O for OP3 they are working in the background. Expect some alpha builds to drop next month for sure
Because of project treble being introduced into oreo, I'm not sure how it will effect custom roms. Pure nexus roms will be easy, Will insanely feature filled roms like rr could very well be alpha or beta till december or january.

Treble won't ever see this device and to be honest I'm betting the oem disable it in the majority of devices. Googles hope with treble is not something that will be useful for about 5 years or so.

What's wrong with stock?
Aftermarket ROMs seem to introduce more problems than they fix, for the past 4 phones
I finally learned my lesson with the Nexus 6 and stuck with stock and a custom kernel. Xposed will be along and there is no reason for a ROM.

I'm staying on Nougat. Working TWRP recovery, running DU, and Franco Kernel. Seems like for me at least when I was on Oreo couldn't get the recovery to stick which was annoying. Went back to Nougat and all is well. Just have to wait for the Oreo's to start dropping.

I'm using a moto-x pure now so I hadn't payed any attention to the Pixel/PixelXL development scene at all. I pre ordered a Pixel 2 XL last night which made me go check out development on the Pixel XL out of curiosity. From what I gathered after some research last night it seems the 2016 pixels have a "non standard" way of handling updates. Apparently there are 2 partitions/slots for system/vendor (slot A and B). I'm not going into details what this means, but the short version is that it made things more difficult for custom recoveries to deal with. Even with all the right parts in place flashing a ROM/GAPPS/Root means taking extra steps that every other devices I've ever dealt with didn't need. Nothing major... just extra steps.
Like I said, that's a VERY basic explanation of the situation. Maybe somebody else is willing to go into more detail, but that's the gist of it. It does look to me though that the most popular ROMs have either an official or unofficial build available.
There's also something to be said about the state of "official android" now, which these phones run. At least to me there is significantly less reason to need/want a custom ROM now compared to just 2 years ago. Now that "official android" has themes capability via OMS and a lot of customization options there is not a whole lot I personally want anymore. My biggest thing is "long back press to kill" which can be had with an app if necessary, "advanced restart" menu and of course root.
I think if the only thing I can't have while sticking with the official builds is the "advanced restart" menu then I can deal with it, I can run terminal commands to achieve the same thing. I can imagine the Pixel 2 XL being my first android phone that I finally stick with the "official builds" + root for the life of the phone. I'm sure I'll end up playing with ROMs once they become available but I don't know if it will be much more than playing around... I've always used ROMs mostly to get the "stock android experience" because I like it.. but since this phone comes with it and will get VERY TIMELY android updates I can definitely see myself sticking with what's official and no ROMS. I ALMOST did it with my Moto X Pure.. moto's official builds were damn near AOSP and I used them until it became apparent that I could't rely of them for OS updates post Lenovo buying Motorola.

I can. The problem is with the dual slots. Pixel Dust was able to finally make a Oreo Rom for both Pixel and Pixel XL, however root is not possible yet. My suggestion if you want to be flash happy is to stay away from Google phones because from here on out they will all have dual slots.

There was actually a updated twrp recovery this month and it sticks with Oreo now. Problem is that there is only one custom Rom for Oreo and currently root is not possible. That's with Pixel Dust Rom.

I find myself checking xda, but mostly the Q&A and discussion threads. I'd probably sell my old 128 GB XL and buy a 5t if it had universal radios like the Pixel since I'm on Verizon. The 2 XL would likely remain my daily driver, mainly because of the fantastic camera which it seems OnePlus can't compare to.
Once you use the pixel 2 camera nothing else is good enough. I had the pixel 2 but sold it, purchased a 5t, and then turned around and sold it 36 hours in for the pixel 2 XL. I couldn't settle without this camera experience.

I know,i just referring that the development here is slow cause oreo is a new os and op5t has nougat only for now.
I haven't compiled AOSP from source since Gingerbread, but man...the temptation to try it just to see if it works (and to have something to flash/play with) is getting harder to resist.
Not even sure I could remember how to do it at this point, it's been so long.
I was thinking about this yesterday ironically. I used to flash ROMs a lot back on the Samsung line. Once I got the Pixel XL and XL2 I havent touched either. The stock setup is honestly great as it is. Part of me misses flashing, but like the stability and performance of the Google stock builds. I might be giving up a little with custom kernals but have been completely satisfied with both stock phones.

I tend to feel the same way about the Pixel line. I flashed a few ROMs on the original XL but stability and performance was never quite up to par with stock. I gave up and have been using stock for about about 10 months now.
Hola
Indeed do I miss my flashing. I have a OP5 that I will be selling soon since I have received my P2XL. As many have mentioned the OnePlus series of phones have become what the original Nexus line was in terms of community affordability and development.
If I can get Pure Nexus on my P2XL then it would be sufficient for me in all honesty, provides the stability and yet extending the functionality and customizations we all crave for. I understand that Nate‏ @BeansTown106 is caught up with some personal stuff and I'm not sure how or if any new development is in the works. This is one of the absolute best custom ROMs one could use. But us users can only wait and see...
This sounds like some sort of AA Thread lol. I also miss flashing. The need for custom ROMS is definitely dwindling though. I am usually okay with a custom kernel and substratum at this point
Stock rooted works fine for me. I do miss the following:
Back to kill app
Volume button to change track
Everything else I'm able to do to my liking.
Adaway works
Magisk works
Substrate works
And little other stock customizations work.

I'm wondering this as well. I thought it was because of the new display ratio, but those have been out for a while now, AND I was looking around the OP5T forums (because I just got one), and even that has some ROMs posted (though they're kinda alpha-ish), and it came out like a month later. I didn't see a single Pixel 2 XL ROM (and I was so confused I thought I was just somehow missing something).
I check XDA twice a day praying that I'll see Elemental Kernel show up.
