Question Anyone experienced a change in Bluetooth audio quality since Android 12? - Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3

Sup guys,
After updating to Android 12 I immediately noticed a difference in audio quality when connecting my Fold3 to my car via Bluetooth. It sounds like I'm in a big concert hall. Dolby Atmos was always on auto, before and after the update. Right now it sounds just bad. I can't listen to songs without noticing it. When changing Dolby Atmos to "Voice", it sounds a little bit better but the fact that it is such a big difference compared to Android 11 Bluetooth sound makes me wonder if its a bug.
Has anyone experienced the same problem and/or has a solution to it?
Thanks

You can try clearing the system cache and a network reset.
Check the bluetooth audio settings in Developer options. Double check all audio settings.
Factory reset if you haven't already after a major firmware upgrade.
Rule #1 if an OS is fast, stable and fulfilling its mission... let it be.

I did have this at first but only on the voice guidance in google maps, I left it and it fixed itself

Not that issue, but now after restarting my phone (due to something draining it), the bass is noticeably weaker, and I'm talking about on my Tribit speaker with a subwoofer in it and Extra Bass setting on. I can't find any settings that are different, but I swear the last time I played it was after the update to 12. So odd!!

Check what codec it's using in Developer options and other bt settings.
Network reset.
Try playing with these two...

It is using aptX as I set it, for both that speaker and my car stereo (Android car stereo, Bose speakers/subwoofer set with huge bass in the stereo's EQ, and the bass was also noticeably less when I drove today). I have too many Bluetooth and Wi-Fi networks set to try resetting them, but I will check those two settings you pointed out. Thanks!

Unfortunately you can't boost what isn't there.
ApkX isn't that good of a codec. The 2 best bt codecs on that phone are SCC and LDAC*.
The Cport/DAC route would yield an exponential improvement if the optimum interfaces are present.
Maybe use old LG or HTC phone as a dedicated server. Get one that supports at least a 250gb SD card. Any wav files you have, kept as such. If any are HDCDs you'll lose the digital HDCD encoding by converting them and with it a lot of added resolution that HDCD**s bring.
PowerAmp is a great music player if you have the hardware/through put to support it.
*try all the codecs at maximum bitrate and sample rate. SBC may work better if you can increase the bitrate.
**If ripped as wav files the HDCD encoding is preserved. A 24 bit DAC can extract about 90% of that for a significant boost in resolution as well as sound stage.
Many HDCDs are not marked, but you can hear it right away vs a 16 bit wav file. A HDCD's resolution approaches about 22 bits. 24 bit digital through put is needed to preserve it though until it reaches the end stage 24 bit or higher DAC.

The sound and bass worked perfectly fine on aptX on this phone and my previous phone, up until I had to reset this phone the other day when something was draining the battery, which was the first reset since upgrading to Android 12. Now, the bass is noticeably weaker than it has been for years.
I don't need or want an additional device, just need this phone to go back to how it was working last week and prior. The songs were downloaded from iTunes, transferred via iSyncr (and SmartSwitch from my old phone), and are played on the phone on Rocket Player Pro (car stereo uses the built-in Bluetooth player). Nothing is wrong with the setup or songs, just suddenly the bass stopped being loud/boomy enough via Bluetooth.

Just giving you options to fix your mess.
You didn't think it be easy did you?
Audio is a rabbit hole that goes very deep and once you know what you're missing you can't unlearn it.
If you haven't done a factory reset, it's time to.
After a major firmware upgrade, always.
Do not use SmartSwitch. It may work ok but if not you'll be reloading again... so there's that.
A factory reset may or may not fix it.
Roll it back to 11 if that's doable. If 11 wasn't working well then pick your poison.
This is an example of exactly why I never upgrade a fast, stable OS that's fulfilling its mission.

I tried the volume one (which doesn't go into effect until you turn Bluetooth off and back on, BTW) and it was terrible, could barely hear the music even turning the car stereo way up. The other setting I tried and it didn't seem to make a big difference, and now next time I go in the car I need to see if the song info. will still not transfer at times - not sure if that happened before trying these settings or not, but I never had a problem with it in the past. I restarted the phone since a restart broke the bass, and it might be a little better, but it is hard to tell after you've been trying for a while. I'll see how it sounds on my portable speaker later today.
LOL, you are crazy if you think I have the time to spend doing a Factory Reset. It is bad enough getting a new phone to spend days setting it up, even after SmartSwitch, I'm not going to do it on a phone I already had. Only reason I got a new phone was because Sprint's network is being shut down, so they said I needed a new phone.
SmartSwitch works perfectly fine and saves a lot of time in setting up a new phone, otherwise it'd be weeks to set it up.
With this phone, you don't have a choice but to update 'cause they only give you three chances to delay it to the next day, then they force it on you. For T-mobile at least.

Carriers are a pain. Their OTA updates can be pure poison. One of the reasons a never upgrade a fast, stable OS that's fulfilling its mission.
OTA updates can be blocked several ways; a carrier block (yes they can do this), an adb edit or using Package Disabler which is what I do.
SmartSwitch should never be trusted with critical data bases ie photos, movies, documents, contacts, app setting exports etc.
All critical should be backup as files, folders for easy inspection/verification.
It takes me about an hour or so to recreate homepage setup without SmartSwitch. This is about the only thing I would trust it to do. If it screws up another reload at this point would waste little time. Using SmartSwitch to import settings to a different phone or OS version is known to cause issues.
Unfortunately once something you need gets goofed up it becomes one of those whatever it takes scenarios. May take minutes, hours or weeks to correct or find a workaround. Sometimes it's back to back full reloads like with an app that boot looped me twice in less then a week. That was fun. However it encouraged me to streamline my backup and reloading techniques. If I have to I will reload without blinking as in the case of malware I can't erraticate in an hour or two... or a boot loop
Keep playing with the settings. Sometimes you need to toggle them in the proper sequence or just keep playing with them until it takes. I've done that more than once with sound and bt settings, they can be a pain. I've spent more time troubleshooting bt than anything else in the last year... if that tells you something.

That phone restart did work, as my portable speaker that I have in the bathroom was back to making the tub across the room vibrate with the bass, and more so once I took the speaker in the shower (it is waterproof, obviously , and drop-proof), so it's all good. Phew! 'Cause I love bass.
I've never had an issue with SmartSwitch and this is the second phone I've used it with. Since this phone doesn't have an SD card like my previous one, it was even more necessary than doing it via another method. As it is, it takes days to set up a phone and all the apps, so trying to get settings on there, too, like WiFi and Bluetooth devices would be ridiculous.
I use the anti-virus app from my computer on my phone since they offer an app, too. (It is a real anti-virus, not a virus itself like the cheap OEMs.) I also don't download porn, so....

Yay!
You can use a OTG flashstick for quick dirty backups. Make sure the majority of the critical data is backed up redundantly to at least two hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC.
On Android 9 and higher antivirus isn't needed. Just be careful what you install and download.
I will scan apps and downloads with online Virustotal.
I run a Malwarebytes scan once a month or if needed. Android is fairly secure... and I do like porn. You know for security integrity testing.

Of course once that issue was fixed, my car stereo's notification panel froze on the screen with the first pull-down (one row of buttons) visible, but not working, and unable to pull it down to restart the stereo. That made several features unavailable, including increasing the volume and the EQ settings, so the bass was not there at all - so weird! If it ain't one thing, it's another!
The anti-virus is free (part of what I'm already paying for for my desktop computer), so might as well use it. It has other features, too.
Yes, security integrity testing is important, just make sure you have a well-oiled machine at the ready. ;-)

Playing music on the Wildfire S

Hello, long time WFS owner, first time poster on this site.
Ever since I've owned the Wildfire, I've been rather perplexed by the music it gives me. The sound quality itself seems decent, but the controls are... odd. Almost every time I press play the music starts, then after around 3 seconds there's a notable pause, before it starts up again. It's not a big deal, but it makes me wonder whether this is a normal thing on this handheld, or if it's a problem with the SD card I'm using. I managed to get a 32GB class 10 micro SD on sale, so I hope nothing's wrong with it. It doesn't seem to miss-handle any other files I put on it (except for some pictures that turn all black sometimes...)
I tried to use some alternatives like Player Pro or Power Amp, but these actually made the problem far worse or introduced all sorts of new bugs. On P.P. instead of a gap of silence at 3 seconds I get this high-pitched screech. Once the music starts playing it's OK, it doesn't do it at the beginning of every song, just occasionally (and certainly more often than I would like) when I hit the play button and start the music. Another thing both P.P. and P.A. suffer from is buggy lock screens and buggy screen rotations. I remember both crashing a lot while music was playing when all I would do is turn the phone on it's side.
Has anyone else noticed problems like this?

I have no problem with any music player,it must be something wrong with your card.I still use the 2 GB stock card. For the best sound quality use PowerAMP,much better than stock player. And also better headset would be recomended.
i use poweramp and have no problems.
also, if you change the settings to "no fading" under the audio engine settings, change buffer size to "huge(+750ms)", and keep audio priority at "+2", you can get gapless playback on standard mp3 files most of the time....occassionally you'll still get that slight blip between tracks, but it's way better than anything else i've tried without having to re-rip everything to a totally different format. (p.s. don't set it to "crossfade" or "cut silence", as i've found this makes it worse for some reason).
i used to hear what i think you're describing as a "screech" sound, i think it sounds more like you can hear the processor working between loading songs or something, but to be honest, i only ever heard it between really quiet song endings/beginnings and only on the stock headset, while listening in my totally silent room, at night...
currently using a cheap-as-chips smartphone headset adapter/mic connected to my KOSS pathfinder "plug" style headphones, using the EQ settings of PowerAmp, and it sounds amazing. The headphones bock out all outside noise, and give plenty of bass and still great mids and highs. to be honest, this is the best setup i've heard on a phone, if you need somethign better, you'd have to get a standalone mp3 player (and this sounds better than most of those, without going for somethign that's speficically designed for high quality audio, as opposed to some cheap and cheerful generic mp3).
No, it's not usual, you should uninstall your player and maybe download another one, if all your mp3 files have this problem then it mustn't be the music files.
And Set your phone back to factory spec is the last choice

It's not really a gap problem, and I personally like gaps between my songs. I often listen to songs on shuffle and it can be a little distracting when it seamlessly switches from soft classical to System of a Down rocking hard, lol. But yeah, it's really: The song starts, enough of it playing that I can recognize which song it is, awkward 2-3 second pause of absolute silence, then it picks up again. Not every time I start enough, but it does it enough for me to consider it a recurring problem.
All I can do is go buy a new micro-SD card I guess... I lent the stock 2 GB one that came with the device to a friend, so I can't exactly use that. I swear, all these bugs, combined with the fact that this thing seems impossible to Root (I have a GSM model) makes me sorely tempted to crawl back to iOS for my next model. I just with the iPhones didn't have such puny screens...
My old wfs use to do the same thing, play music for 10 secounds or so and then stop, idk why it did that but that phone was a problem, everytime I hung up from a call the screen would turn off for 3 mins everytime and the touch screen never works, so some phones do it and dont...but I got a new one and I love it Works great

[Q] Bluetooth quality issues?

So, posting here was a last resort, but I've exhausted all my other options. I'll try to make this as concise as possible:
I just did a bluetooth/aux input retrofit for my car so I can stop using CDs for music. Aux sounds crystal clear, bluetooth with my 2nd generation iPod touch sounds crystal clear, bluetooth with my Optimus G Pro has static, crackling at certain frequencies. Doesn't sound compressed necessarily, just crackly.
What I've done:
1) Hard reset.
2) Tried both the original 4.1.2 and the new "value pack" update.
3) Actually sent my phone back to AT&T and got a refurbished one in the mail.
4) Sent my bluetooth retrofit unit back and got a new one in the mail.
5) Rooted the phone, installed freegee and twrp, and flashed the hkfriends kernel.
None of this fixed my issues. When playing the same exact song on my iPod and Android phone, the iPod wins every time.
P.S. My friend's Verizon phone (I think it's a Motorola Razr) has the same sound quality issues. Not sure of Android version, though.
Music is the absolute most important thing for me, and if I can't get this resolved I will have to switch back to Windows Phone/iPhone, despite how much I love Android. I have no knowledge or time to develop a new Rom for the G Pro and there's no telling when we'll get one that could fix my issues.
Is anyone else having these problems, or does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!
For some reason my phone decided to play music using "Phone Audio". I disabled phone audio for the device in bluetooth setting, then it connected as an AV signal, and quality improved drastically.

Thanks for the suggestion. Just tried it, unfortunately did not seem to make any noticeable difference for me. To clarify, the sound quality is fine for the most part, it's just at certain frequencies I hear crackling.
By the way, earlier I also edited the audio.conf file under /system/etc/bluetooth and changed the values of "SBCSources=1" and "MPEG12Sources=0" to 0 and 1 respectively, which I read should force better quality out of bluetooth. Additionally I changed the value "Master=false" to true, which I also read could improve quality. It might be my mind playing tricks on me but it does seem to sound better, however I still hear the crackling at times, so I'm definitely not where I want to be.
Highly disappointing. Any other suggestions?
Which music player are you using on your phone? And have you tried any of the equalizer apps from the market?
Sent from my LG-E980 using xda premium
I've tried both the Music app that LG includes, and Google's Play Music app, which I prefer. No difference. Have not tried any equalizers, but not quite sure what that would do aside from eliminating the frequencies that have issues through bluetooth but work fine through an aux input? I don't consider butchering the music as an acceptable solution, unfortunately.
try this, it might help

Just out of curiosity - how did you find out editing the audio.conf file? I'm looking for a way to boost the output volume for my bluetooth, did a quick search and saw your post and it made me curious...
Will this change boost the output volume at all or is there a separate line or file to be edited?
Thanks for your help.

DAC Fix - Use the HI-FI DAC Everywhere!

Hi everyone! I've just developed an app that should fix the issue of the DAC only being usable in some apps.
Now the ESS DAC/AMP can be used in any app on your phone, including Google Play Music, YouTube, Spotify, and probably many more that I haven't tested yet.
Here's the Play Store link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phascinate.lgv10.dacfix
It can be set to automatically turn on when the phone boots up. My goal was to make this a "set it and forget it" kind of fix. All you have to do is enable it once, and it should be fixed for good. Of course, I've only just released it so it may have some bugs. But so far it's working fine on my end.
If you have any issues or it's not working correctly, feel free to tell me here! Hope it works for you guys! I'm really loving the sound quality on this phone.
doing back up now so I can try this, very exciting news if this works
Seems like it's working in Neutron amp which has been my pain point ever since buying the phone.
Thanks!
*tested with youtube and DI.fm both seem working with the DAC with the fix
wow big deal, thanks
Tested with YouTube and XiiaLive Pro and the volume definitely changes when toggling the hifi option on and off.
It is working on Poweramp. Thanks.

Interesting... Can the developer tell us a little more about how this works? I really didn't think it would be as simple as an app like this making it work.

The concept is actually quite simple! Immediately when music starts playing, it plays some completely (and I mean completely! We don't want any background noise, do we?) silent media which tricks the phone into turning the DAC on.

In theory, it should be. Because it's set to be silent, Android should simply completely skip over the silent media. In my own testing it doesn't seem to have had any negative effect whatsoever on sound quality. Though I'd love to see the frequency output in something like Audacity if anyone wants to test it.

Alrighty. Right now I'm on my lunch break at work listening with a Brainwavz HM5. Things seem good here, but I'll test tonight with my AKG Q701.
I really only use the stock music app and TIDAL which both worked without your fix, but I'll test everything out more tonight. My only concern would be a possible negative effect with apps that already worked fine, for example a silent track playing along with the regular music making things possibly no longer bit perfect, or extra battery drain for some odd reason. I'll test sound quality with my Q701 tonight and see if I notice any extra battery drain. All I can confirm at the moment is that toggling hifi on and off definitely changed the volume with apps that it didn't before.
Good work.

Yeah, that was my concern too. But everything seems to be working fine.
Feel free to post your results with the Q701's as soon as you test them!
Good job, works as intended. Thanks.
Few suggestions: Show status of app running in background from top pull down menu. Also the ability to enable disable from there. Otherwise still 5 out 5.
man you are a genious and this is the best ever app i appreciated this year
Does this app need root permission?
Edit: nvm. Just installed and gonna test..
Thanks for the effort mate. I'll also give it a try though as a non-audiophile person, I fail to notice Hi-Fi DAC effect anyway.
for those who can distinguish the difference between DAC enabled/disabled, can you tell that's even distinguishable with the QuadBeat headphones? I'm trying with some FLAC and various music players but other than then "higher volume" I cannot notice an improvement sound wise.
I do try with the QuadBeat and Bose QC25. I also just purchased a Piston 3. Do you think it's my headphones who are not enough to make a difference?
Can you maybe recommend a song where you can clearly distinguish the performance between DAC enabled or disabled?
Amazing app, thank you very much.
Now I challenge you to check the other audio limitation of the phone.
The normal and high gain mode of the Amp depending the impedance of the headphones at the moment is completely automatic.
That's OK with IEM but there are problems with big headphones with low impedance. In those cases the normal gain mode delivers not enough power (volume) and being able to select or force the high gain mode would be a perfect solution.
At this moment the high gain mode is triggered with headphones with an Impedance over 50ohm.
Thanks anyway for this app.

Seems to be no negative effects on SQ. Not sure on any change in battery life yet. Good so far.
Fantastic! At first I thought there would be a big battery impact since there is silent media playing, but then I remembered that only happens when there is actually music playing - fantastic implementation. Hopefully there is no battery drain. Works here for Google Play Music, so thank you very much!!!
it is working great with spotify here
I do notice the clarity with dac on and off.. however i'm using free spotify so the music stream is not high quality.
I only did notice a bug not sure because of this app or not but it never happen before.
So today i plug my phone to aux in my car in the morning everything work great.
in the afternoon i plug aux again to my car and this time my 4G or 3G writing on my signal bar is gone until i restart. This never happen before i install your apps, but seems i can't repeat this bug.
Firstly, thank you for taking the time to make this app. I just tested it with Player Pro and it seems to be working (Player Pro did work before but only if you didn't install the DSP pack). I did have one question. I noticed that the EQ is not working in Player Pro. You can open the EQ, but changing any of the frequencies or selecting a preset has no effect on the audio. Does that mean that the other audio features like Replay Gain also won't work with the app installed?

Odd bluetooth behavior since updatin to android 9

I've been experience a few issues with the new update. One of them, which is more a nuisance than anything, is my bluetooth connection to my car. It's a 2015 Mustang with MyFord Touch. The phone is a galaxy S8+. About 1/3 of the time when I start the car, the phone shows up named a bunch of random characters, instead of Galaxy S8+. Not a huge deal. My music player starts automatically (even if I close it, and kill the process). The thing that's weird is that the audio is kind of hollow sounding when it starts up UNTIL I turn on the phones display, then it kicks into a fuller sound. It's never done this before. Not only that, but it decides when it wants to display track information from Samsung music player only a small portion of the time.
If I'm playing music through Amazon Music, it updates the track information, no problem. If I switch to Samsung's music player, it just displays the last track I played on Amazon music, and never changes. If I start the car with the music player going, it won't update track information until it gets to the next song, and even that is spotty.
Aside from these issues, and the issues I'm having with the default browser, I think it's a pretty good update. But this music thing is really bugging me. For the record, I've tried rebooting the phone. I've tried changing through the AVRCP versions in the developer options, I've toggled Dolby Atmos on and off, changed the sample rate, channels, etc. Nothing seems to be affecting this problem.
On a side note, how do I close the music player so it doesn't automatically start playing when connected to bluetooth?
Thanks in advance. If this doesn't belong here, let me know.

Did you ever try to update your car's firmware or going to your dealer and ask for it? I think it's because Android 9 is "too new" for your car
I updated to the latest firmware about 6 months ago. No new updates since then. It would be kinda bogus if android 9 made a 4 year old car obsolete, but i suppose it's possible.

It could be possible that you have to expect for a new car firmware or ask to your device forum if anyone else have your same problem with android auto
Good call. I'll pop the question over to my mustang forum. Thanks.

Random loud screeching/white noise when bluetooth is on?

Recently, my phone's started to randomly shriek with white noise and it scares me silly. I think I've narrowed it down to when bluetooth is enabled and playing music (spotify).
Has anyone ever encountered this issue or could suggest what solutions I can try out? I've rebooted my phone and I don't want to immediately jump to a factory reset quite yet.

I have an AT&T LG G8 running Android 10 (SW ver. G820UM20k.) I've also had this issue for some months now. However, while I have Spotify installed I am almost never using it; the noise occurs anyway.
My usage pattern when it occurs typically involves going between YouTube, Chrome, and Twitter apps, and occasionally other social media apps. Often happens when playing a video or audio in the background, but occasionally get the noise when dead silent in between apps too.
I've noted that if I stop what I'm doing when I hear it and immediately switch the audio path back to the phone (via the notification toggle,) the noise often occurs again but out of the phone speaker after a short time.
Now, I've not experienced any random noises the past couple of weeks, but haven't found a definite solution either. Searching the internet for "phone random static burst" or "phone making loud noise randomly" yields similar complaints going back the last few years, across different devices (and presumably Android versions.) Disabling/ force stopping Chrome was a more popular suggestion that came up, as well as fiddling with the Bluetooth codec in developer options. (I'd also suggest making sure all installed apps are updated, if the bug is indeed related to apps mishandling audio somehow.)
Given the range of system specs with these similar complaints, my hunch is the core issue may have to do with certain Bluetooth stack implementations just having problems in certain scenarios. FWIW I have my Bluetooth currently set to AVRCP 1.6 (Default is 1.4) and audio codec to SBC (Default is System Selection.) In months prior when I had the noise issue, these were set to default. My Bluetooth earbuds (Sony WF-1000XM3) prefer to default to AAC codec but do support SBC; I believe I haven't had the noise since forcing the system codec to be SBC only. If nothing else works, may be worth toggling that setting and hoping it fixes the noise. Good luck.
