Hello all,
I am new to forums and have been searching for sometime trying to find a fix for my phone. Yes, I used the search button before posting. Anyways, I recently got a dash from a co-worker of mine. When she had the phone it worked fine until she dropped it and cracked the screen. I replaced the screen in it and it work fine for a few days. All of a sudden it started freezing on me. I had to remove the battery and wait at least 10-15 mins. before powering the phone back on. Sometimes it wouldnt come back on for a couple hours. I thought it was an issue with the software so I updated to the latest version tmobile offers on their website. This still didnt work. I got a new battery for it (aftermarket) and am still having the same problems. It mainly freezes when ending calls or in the middle of calls. If I "reformat" (dont know technical term for phones) and reinstall software will this fix my problem?
Man, it sounds like you have gotten dust or some type of contamination inside the phone when you replace the screen. These circuit boards are not capable of having dust on these pieces on them. They don't handle well, things overheat quickly. So, I am sure when you make a call, the phone is at its peak power, hence heat.
So, if I were you, open the phone back up, check to see if it looks clean. Maybe, even blow it clean with a can of compressed air. Other than that. It never hurts to flash your phone with a new ROM, but fix a "dead" phone, I don't think so.
Good Luck.
I always start simple.
1. Are you using a memory card? Some cards just dont work well and the access time can slow a phone down alot and even cause freezing.
2. Sim cards can get dirty as well.. clean the contacts off and see if it helps
3. Since your co-worker dropped it, I would look for loose connections.
If all else fails flash a new rom and cross your fingers
Thanks guys. I will try and take it apart again to make sure theres not dust in the phone. There is no memory card so I can scratch that off the list. I will check the SIM card to mak sure its clean. Are these phones tempermental when it comes to clean SIM cards? I ask because my SIM card works fine in my other phone. Anyways, I did a hard reset yesterday and work for about 15mins and then restarted on its own several times. After it did this it finally shut off completley and now I cant even power the phone on or charge it. Looks like I have to suck it up and just buy one.
alright, I have had my et4g for about a year and a half now, I have successfully flashed probably close to 100 times if not more, back and forth from GB to ICS, NOT because Im actually smart enough to know whats going on, just that Im smart enough to read and follow the steps you smart people lay out for me in your posts.
I am also pretty sure I have gone back from JB to GB before but I dont remember for sure. I was currently running FK23 and wanted to revert to EL29 and just get whatever the latest official build was onto the phone because I was going to sell it since I just upgraded. AND heres where the problem came, I was doing the restore one click el29(same computer/cable/file I have always used) and everything was going fine and out of the corner of my eye I noticed the monitor dimmed a little bit (didnt sleep or anything, just dimmed. on a laptop that was plugged in) and not sure if thats when it happened but I saw the red fail, the bar on the phone was SO CLOSE to completed its not even funny, but it just continued to sit there. I noticed at the end of the script was a series of "removed" "added" and ended at another "removed".
I can get it into download mode but 2 different computers, 2 different odin OC's, 2 different cables, full odin, nothing recognizes it. when I plugged it into the other computer the computer played the sound and brought up a notification that the usb device had malfunctioned.
tried to use kies as well because when trying a normal boot it says "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. please select recovery mode in kies & try again" but it doesnt recognize the phone either, and I have no recovery code to try.
I have searched and found NUMEROUS threads about this problem, most never were resolved, ALL that were resolved were other devices or they could still boot, or something else.
I have no idea where to go from here, can anyone give me some help?
thanks in advance
Is it possible that the USB port on the device has finally kicked the bucket? Check the pins. See of they are lifted, bent, broken, etc. You can also pull the device apart and check the solder joints on the port. They could just have a bad connection on one of the data leads. Another thing to try, get a full stock flashable restore zip file and place it on your external SD card. Rename it to "update.zip" then in CWM or the stock recovery hit apply update from SD card.

volume up + power just takes me to the "firmware upgrade encountered..." message, no way to get to recovery. looking in with a flashlight the port seems to be fine. now it has been acting up lately where it wouldnt charge if the cord was coming out at a little bit of an angle. it really only was happening with this dirt cheap car charger I got off monoprice though and Ive still been able to transfer files and charge for quite some time so I figured that wouldnt be the problem, especially when the problem happened in the middle of it having a steady connection for ~20 minutes prior to the issue.
know of a source to buy a cheap port I can try and repair myself (Im better at that sort of thing than messing with software so I think I might be able to do it)

It might auto flash it at that point if it scans and detects "update.zip". I may be wrong though... Ebay will have them. I will think of some other options and report back. Last resort is to J-Tag it if even replacing the port doesn't work and there is nothing you can do with software. Either that or replace it with insurance and tell them you were updating to the newest ICS.

well, didnt know what JTAG was, looked it up and looks like I have to send it off somewhere and pay 40+ bucks plus shipping to possibly get it fixed, to probably not sell the phone for THAT much more, so if it comes to that I just might leave the phone in its current state and forget about it. Ill try the port first though, and anything else you(or others) can think of trying. also I dont have insurance, I dont get it on my phones. I used to but by the time Ive had the phone for a while plus the cost of the deductible I could just buy a nice one off contract on ebay or something anyways. and this is actually the first time in a very long time I would need to make a claim. last time I would have needed to file it lost/stolen/broken was back on cingular when I had that wierd spin open walkman phone because it fell apart. and monthly insurance costs since then could buy me a couple new phones by now.
also, could it be that the usb port finally crapped out if the computer sees it every time I plug it in, it just says the usb device has malfunctioned. Im trying to find an update.zip to give a shot right now also, so far they are very specific on the condition of the phone to flash (must run this version, usb storage off, usb debugging on).
auto update.zip was a no go
try a 3rd cable
well, I can give that a shot but I used both cables to successfully transfer files from the wifes et4g to the computer that I am trying to fix my phone with, so I know the drivers are in there to recognize the phone and the cables work with another phone of the same model.
last night I tore the phone down and just made sure everything was clean and connected. none of the data connections behind the usb port were damaged, or inside the port but who knows about the part you cant see. anyways the phone still turns on and shows on the screen so I didnt make it worse. I ordered up a new port last night also so I guess as a last resort I am going to try that. I did notice that the moisture indicator on the inside of the back panel that pops off when dissasembling the phone shows it has gotten "wet", but I know its never sat in a puddle, never left on a counter with a spill. I have talked on it in the rain (inside the hood I was wearing) and also gotten some rain drops on the screen while I was dialing the number in the rain or checking a text in the rain but I just wipe it off and put it back in my pocket, which might have been a little damp from the rain, so how sensitive are these things, humid air must be enough to trigger the little purple "x"s then, right?
I had a Nexus S that quit working. Like your phone, it would go into download mode but none of my 3 computers would recognize it, but they did recognize my og Epic. Turned out the internal memory went bad without warning. It was still under factory warranty so I sent it to Samsung and they replaced the mainboard. I hope your problem is something simpler.

ah, another phone is using those cables fine. . Ok, my bad. Does sound like something borked on the phone (USB, flash memory, etc).
The purple X's dissapeared and the paper turns red when it gets wet. You are good.

oh, ok. for some reason I thought that they were white then the purple x's appeared when they got wet, didnt spend any time today messing with the phone at all today, although nothing I can really do anyways til the port comes in the mail.
Hi, my apologies if my HTC is in the wrong forum, not sure where the Desire would fit, if anywhere.
Nonetheless this is a useful phone to me and worked fine till the day I had to jump in a lake to save my 5 year old boy from drowning. Naturally didn't have the time to remove the phone from my pocket before jumping in the lake. Kid was fine after swallowing some water but phone "swallowed" a lot of water. Let it dry in a bag of rice and baking soda for several days to fully dry. But when trying to turn it on, the screen just flickers non stop. However when connecting it to the computer using a USB cable, I get what appears to be a boot screen (see pic in address below). Phone was rooted and run CyanogenMod 7. Maybe someone that's familiar with the procedure could guide me? Tried a couple of the options shown but to no avail. Old but still decent phone, would like to get it working again. I've transferred the sim to another phone and I've saved the micro SD card. Just need to get the phone to boot again. PS: could the battery be toast? Maybe it got shorted when I first tried to turn the phone on while still wet?
Any help is appreciated.
I'm too new here, won't allow me to post external links. Please go to h-t-t-p://tinyurl.com/p4dmgej (remove dash from http)
I'd say leave it to dry naturally for a week or so and try again. If no joy then you could try a new screen but it's probably something really tiny and sensitive that cannot be replaced..
Glad you saved your boy!.

It's been 2 months. But I did make a crucial mistake: I tried to turn the phone on while still at the lake. This likely caused more damage than it needed.
However I suspect the issue is with the battery. It won't charge past 3.85 volts. And the display works just fine, once I press the key combo to enter the boot screen as seen in the pic above. Will try and track one down locally, hopefully a shop will be able to test it a battery in the phone before I buy it.
And yes, the boy was fine. But it was a close call. it is amazing how quickly something can go wrong. I neglected the lake rule of staying within arm's reach. Let this be a lesson to anyone with small ones: it only takes seconds for things to go badly wrong, even at a supposedly safe, man made lake intended for kids.
PS: 2 months prior an adult died on the same lake after falling off his boat. Another lesson: invest in swimming lessons. Scary stuff, indeed.
Right, i thought you were seeing that over usb via sdk or something.. You could always try opening it and inspecting for blown components. What damage can be done.. It's already useless.
I still think it's worth leaving it to dry naturally.

my wife dropped her z1 compact in the toilet yesterday.
she wiped it off and put it in a bag of rice, to get rid of the moist.
it was working when she put it in there, but after a few hours when we took it out to check it, the screen wouldn't light up.
it was (is) still working though, cause she got lots of messages.
i can see that there is water inside since there are tiny drops of water inside the flash and the camera looks all moist inside...
today, it's the same story, but now the problem is even bigger, since i tried all sorts of fixes i could find, which included turning the phone off/ rebooting (powerbutton+volume up).
i had hoped to hook it up to a computer and transfer all the photos, but since i can't see the screen, i can't enter the pincode and get access to her phone.
when i do connect it to a computer, it starts loading, so the connection seems fine, but since i can't "enter" the phone, the computer won't recognize it as a device.
do you know of any way to at least save the photos?
would it it be possible to use the warrany for this?

If it still connects OK, there's probably hope with adb...
I wouldn't do anything with it until all traces of water have gone. This might take a couple of days. Open all the flaps while it is drying in the rice.

Well, You could try connecting the phone via HDMI and at least get an display. And the by making assumptions of where the numbers are, You could press the passcode and connect it to pc then.
The first thing you should have done after picking it from the water was to turn off the device. Less risk of something shorting out like it probably did in your case.

Try keeping it for a week iinside rice or silicon bag.
And you can't claim warranty unless the phone is faulty!
Guys, I need help.
My One M8 finally gave in-or so i thought. After the volume rocker failing and falling off, and both cameras failing I started looking for a new phone.
Then the power button died.
So now, the phone semi-functions, at least it is usable for a backup for the time being. But, since i dont have any buttons, i cant get the phone to open.
Does the phone automatically boot itself when charge reaches 100%? If not, is there a way i can get this phone to open, I will get it repaired but i doubt it'll be done without the repairs formattiong the phone, which wont make sense...
Thanks!

No, why would it do that? Some folks like to charge it overnight, with the phone powered off; and not want it coming on for no reason in the middle of the night.
I don't think there is a way to power on, without the power button.
nice!
i just realized my sd cart got bent too-i think i have to say goodbye to all the stuff on that phone :I
the S7 seems like a nice phone

That poor phone...
What did you do to it!?
I dont treat my phones well after a certain point, with that point being a single scratch or dent or something.
I was doing an experiment, and i spilled motor oil (castrol edge 5W-40 if anyones interested) and it stained my case, and from that day on I didnt use the phone with a case. i forgot the phone on the table during a flash summer rain-front camera destroyed, rear camera i have no clue how it went out lol
it was like new for a year and a half though... ;P

You should be regularly backing up your data then (many good solutions around). Really, everyone should. Wondering how to get data after the phone after its broken, is too late.
I never store anything important on internal storage. One day it will be inaccessible.
I feel sorry for your abused phone.
eh, its nothing too "important" just pictures that i received on whatsapp. rest were on my dropbox.
i got a silver S7, so i guess this thread can be closed.
I also looked into what I could do, turns out the power button is built in to the daughterboard. thankfully, i found and ordered one for $38, hope it'll at least work enough for me to get the data off it!
