Battery life debugging/drain - Samsung Galaxy A3, A5, A7 (2017) Questions & Answe

Hi all,
i recently installed the lineage 17 for my device.
And i have to say i am super happy.
After some investigations i found that AOD is not the best for battery life.
And now i am trying to find another issue. Hopefully i can get some hints here.
so for the timeline in the attached images...
at like 7 am i turned off AOD.
i did those screenshots at like 9 am.
- the device went down to like ~0.5% per hour. (betterbatterystats and battery history)
- and some (10 per hour) wakeups.
at like 12 am i did some more screenshots.
so it looks like 9:30 ish sth. started to use my phone again. not bad but just more.
it seems like this is:
com.android.systemui with ~60 wakeups per hour (1 per minute)
if i look at the battery historian screenshot the current is 16mA vs 60 mA. And you can see that in both cases the screen is off. (created with "bugreportz" on a root terminal and uploaded to https://bathist.ef.lc/ )
I just dont know what is causing this.
(assuming that the battery health did not change in that time)
does anyone have an idea?
maybe this is not phone related, so might be good to put it to a more general forum.

Hi,
i am not sure why but i guess my battery life is now way better.
3 Days without charging. and (as far as i can tell) the same usage as regular.
well only on wifi, not longer than an hour on mobile data.
but i love it

Memory and Battery ... what do you get?

Apparently, the battery life and the low internal memory are some major drawbacks of this otherwise great handset, so I though of putting up some experiences of what users report from their experiences with internal memory and battery life.
(After installing all programs and under normal usage)
ROM:
System 260MB => 32MB free
Data: 150MB =>32.7 free
Strategy: rooted, uninstalled htc stuff.
Battery Life:
24-36 hours
Remarks:
I feel the battery behaves rather strange, think there is definitively room for improvement. Some days, it hardly uses 5% over 12 hours!! Then, on others, without touching it, it looses over 50%!!
I am currently playing around with the Network settings and will see what I find.
Underclocking on demand should further alleviate the problem I hope!
With the original WF I easily got 4-5 days and the battery is only marginally smaller so should be possible to get closer to this range
Here my results:
About 50 MB free of ROM.
About 100 MB free of RAM.
Stock ROM, S-ON (waiting for htc unlock and cyanogenmod)
Battery lasts under normal usage 2 days, light usage 3 days. (When i sleep phone is in fly mode and there's no battery drain)
Normal usage: little browsing, messaging, mailing, music listening, checking news and weather, maybe a phone call.
Light usage: messaging, mailing, a bit music listening, calendar checking, very very little browsing
The biggest battery drain is the screen, especially when playing games (15 minutes dragon fly gives 10 % battery drain) and browsing, market checking/updating.
Everything stock:
free ROM: 47
free RAM: 122
Around 2 days battery use if I don't play too much Airport Mania 2, or else 10 minutes play equals minus 5% battery
UPDATE:
I changed some settings to maximize battery performance, notable
Location => Disable "Use Wireless Networks" (battery eater!!)
Wifi&Networks: Mobile Network Settings:
Network Mode: GSM only (OK I don'T need the fast one)
Enable Always-On: DISABLED
Plus I set it on Flight Mode during night (I used Gentle Alarm to do it before, but apparently there is a bug where it makes it consume engergy nevertheless so do it manually now for the moment)
Results:
For now, 3-4 days!
Will continue trying out (but now it will take a week or two to finish some cycles ;-) )
RAM : 241 free / 160 used
ROM : 70 free / 80 used
Cyanogenmod 7 / 1500mAh HD7 battery
1,5-2 days with fully wifi opened.
Sure you can kill 3G, WiFi etc but then why have smartphone and dumb it down?
Here are a few battery saving tips I've learned from owning a GSM Hero and Desire HD (my gf has WFS which is why I'm lurking here... just ordered a XTC Clip for it).
Unfortunately when the green light says you're phone is fully charged this isn't always the case. The battery is likely to be mis-reporting its capacity and % used, this can cause your phone to die when the battery still has remaining charge. So, we're going to fix that.
Assuming you have already rooted your phone, download Battery Calibration tool and CurrentWidget.
Place a CurrentWidget widget on your home screen and charge your phone until the widget says 0mA. This means it has reached fully capacity.
Once it hits 0mA on the widget, open Battery Calibration and wipe battery stats.
Reboot your phone whilst still plugged in and upon reboot it will recreate a new battery stats file, however now it will know the battery's max capacity and will correctly report battery % used.
I do this about twice a week. Maybe once a month I will also let it completely die and then fully recharge whilst off, before powering on and repeating the above steps.
Other things you can do to increase battery life are:
Change the sync interval of apps like Facebook, Weather etc. I usually set most things to every 3 or 4 hours, with Flickr only being once a day.
Don't run the screen at full brightness if you don't need it. On my DHD I find 40% to be best for most conditions, with only really bright sun making it hard to read... in which case I bump it up to around 75%. Auto-brightness if ok but it tends to be on the bright side on most Sense ROMs so hopefully someone will work out a way to tweak the values for WFS. I had a play about with custom values on DHD but after testing for a while I still prefer to control it manually. It's a personal thing though.
Remove crap you don't need. Stocks, News, eReader, Twitter etc are always the first to go when I install a new ROM. I use Root Explorer to delete them but there are various ways to do this including Titanium Back-up or by using ADB. You can find everything in /data/app & /system/app. Just be sure to do a nandroid backup in case you delete any system critical apks.
Change Wifi sleep policy to Never.
Limit your homescreen widgets to only ones you really need. Having 7 screens packed with widgets and apps will cause battery drain.
Turn off Power Saving mode. I tend to find it doesn't really help and just makes your phone quite useless when you hit the pre-set % where it activates.
Never use Task Killers. This link gives an excellent explanation.
Finally, wait in hope for an overclocked and undervolted kernel, different radios and custom auto-brightness values
If I can think of anything else I'll post it here
don´t know why so mutch people get worried about the battery. for me the only thing that counts is that the battry takes me over the day. i mean i go out an seven am and get bat at 5pm, so thats the time i need my battery to hold. maybe i need some backup to get until 22 pm and everything is alright.
for me i doesnt matter if i´ve to recarge after one day
Yeah, for some people it can become a bit of an obsession. However, it still think it's worth taking a few simple steps to get the best out of your device
For some people 8 hours between charges is fine. For me, I like a phone that can run for 8 hours between charges, but also run for 48 hours between charges (without having to go to dead mode by turning on airplane). I go camping, stay the night someplace else, forget my charger while going on a trip or just want the freedom of not having to find an outlet and drag my charger with me if I want to have a phone run for more than 8 hours. So I get off work, change my clothing and run out the door to my after-work sporting event, then head out for a few beers afterwards with the team and I barely have enough juice left to call my wife or check on a few game scores.
It's important. Not having it be important means your phone is running your life or you just always have the same routine, which is fine for you maybe but I like to head out.
About 7 hours running CM 7. Battery life is very bad at the moment.

[Q] Insane display battery usage

I'm on Runny 3.3 which I have had flashed for about a week.
Wiped completely before flashing (Full wipe EXT4 zip), never had this problem before.
Anyway, in this week I assumed that the battery usage would level out. I tried calibrating it, but display always takes up 93% of the battery usage.
Even on Runny 3.1 I had brilliant battery life. This problem has only occured on this ROM. I lost 7% from full in 20 minutes when I was using my phone for relatively basic tasks.
Should I reflash? What kind of values are you getting for display battery usage?
I have a solution my friend
I suffered this problem like a few days a go.
what you need to do is take a look at this post i hope it'll help
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...26016#16808950
Thanks, but the link doesnt work lol
a wee bump for any help....
I changed the kernel to the Unity kernel and the display is now using 60 - 70 odd percent. Can't really test it though since its been plugged in since I flashed it. Will see how it goes tomorrow and report back
Please let me know, my battery lasts 8 hours with moderate 3 hours of onscreen time (at best)
For those who suffer this problem check out memnocs perfect battery guide
Btw I'm sorry the link didn't work. As a said take a look at memnocs guide its in dhd development page
The kernel didnt help much, the display usage has gone down but the other things have gone up lol a lot more than I expected. Will try that battery guide now.
lol what do you expect? the display is the biggest battery-eating-monster in our phone. it's completely normal that it drains that much.
fyi: my phone drains ~250-300 mA with display on, lowest brightness level, ~500 with maximum brightness level and 1-8mA in standby.
so: ~500mA/h and we have a 1200mA/h (probably less than that, since Li-Ion batteries lose capacity after some months) battery -> about 2h display on at maximum brightness
its weird because this "problem" occours only with sense rom.
On Cm7 and miui the screen was under 50% of battery usage...
Most non sense roms don't calculate ic correctly.
You can use an app called battery monitor widget to watch your battey drain if you want to.

[Q] Battery Life after Blu Kuban

Hey all,
I recently put Blu Kuban on my phone and I'm loving the look and feel, but I'm having REALLY bad battery life. I couldn't get through the day with only a little use. I download the battery calibration app and tried that. Its also been about 4 days since I flashed the new ROM. Anymore suggestions? I bought an extended battery at 3800 mAh and I'm getting less than a day with the new ROM. Before the update I was getting at least a day and a half with MUCH more usage.
So long story short, BAD battery life. Any suggestions? If I cant get this figured out, I'm going to have to go back to stock.
Thanks in advance.

Read power saving options. There are tons of battery life guides.

Hi. I've noticed you posted two separate threads relating to RUJELUS' Blu Kuban ROM. I would suggest you ask in his thread if you haven't already due to the fact that he may offer more assistance.
However, there are many different battery solutions. The problem is, if you were previously running Stock Gingerbread, you must get used to the fact that until Kernel source drops, battery life will not be as good on ICS as it is on GB.
To address your ICS battery problems, I suggest you turn here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668853
Also, if possible, it would be nice to see your battery stats. Take screenshots and post them up here.
I would definitely post in the thread if xda would let me. I tried because I had that thought originally and because I don't have 10 posts yet it wouldn't let me post in the thread. I will post battery pictures tomorrow but its pretty much saying like 36% android OS, 20% display at one hour of use.
Thanks for the help so far guys. I checked out the first link and changed a few things. Hopefully it helps.
Still rocking Gingerbread ;p
How old is your battery?
How old is your phone?
How much do you have running in the background?
Do you keep WiFi on at all times (so that it might be searching for signals constantly)?
Use the apps listed above to try and get an idea of what could be causing the drain.
Hopefully it will improve so you can fully enjoy the ROM.

My phone was purchased in October. My battery is about 2 weeks old. I don't believe i have anything but gmail sync in the background. However, I'm not used to all apps I used staying open after I use them so I've been kinda bad about closing them. Is there something I can change so this goes back to closing most things after I press the back button. I do not keep WiFi on.
My extended battery got about 18 hours and was at 15%. I slept for 11 hours last night with nothing on. I used facebook for 15 minutes, just responding to a post and scrolling through messages and battery dropped at least 10% if not more. Granted, I was trying to download the update but doing that for 10 minutes dropped my battery over 20%. I'm very concerned.
i get good battery life im using trexcell extended battery and you realling expecting to last a whole day in one charge hell no no way unless you dont use your phone

I essentially didn't use my phone for half the day. I can't expect with a battery double the size to get 12 hours of light use?
are you on the latest build? Im on 1.0.4.1 and my battery is pretty solid, Id say give it a few days. are trying different modems?
I experienced the exact same thing on that rom. It is definitely one of my favorite roms but I would get half the life that I would on the others I tried.
Were you having issues with battery at all before you flashed the Blu Kuban?
I'm running Blazer ICS now and getting almost as good of battery life as I had on Gingerbread.
So here is my screenshot. In next post ill type how long each process was running.

So 3 hours and 46 minutes. Less than 50%.
Android OS CPU total: 20m 36s.
Stay Awake: 1 hr 8m 34s
Screen: 34 minutes 17 seconds (last 10 minutes or so has been trying to get this post up)
Facebook: CPU Total: 10m 25s
Stay Awake: 2m 34s
GPS: 3 seconds (turned off immediately after realizing it did that)
Android System: 7m 10 s. CPU foreground: 8 seconds. Stay Awake: 4m 27s
Cell Standby: Time without signal 4%
I figure thats enough but if not let me know. I just updated to the new version so I guess I'll have to give it another few days, however this was typical of the last version. Please help, I really like Blu Kuban.

1. You're addicted to Facebook lol
2. Your signal seems very low...could be your phone is running up its battery trying to get signal
3. What are your wifi settings? Use one band only and leave sleep mode "always"
4. What is the brightness on your screen? Set it lower and unselect auto adjust
5. Sync can kill your battery, either remove some things from sync (like Facebook) or remove them all and only sync manually

Wow, that is incredible!
You slept 11 hours? I have not gotten that much sleep in years!
In all seriousness, I have recently gone back to Blu Kuban and the battery life will get better after at least two full charge cycles. I am currently at 9 hours and 75% remaining. I am in a low signal area and keep data off and use wifif when available. I do use Juice Defender to automatically turn wifi off when the screen is off, so when I am not using my phone, I can still receive calls and SMS.
My battery life on Blu Kuban is really good... been getting like 25-30 hours for the past couple of days. One thing that you can do to maximize battery life is turn off haptic feedback and also turn off pulse notifications. Pulse keeps your phone from entering Deep Sleep and haptic feedback also uses a lot of unnecessary battery.
I found out what my problem was. My extended battery has gone to ****. I took my extended battery out yesterday and put in my standard battery and it is running better than the extended battery. What is crazy is that I replaced my stock battery because it was running poorly and not getting good life. Therefore my 3600mAh battery is running worse than a BAD 1800mAh battery.
Tips though to improve battery life that I found:
Download CPU Spy
Download GSam Battery Monitor (Previously known as Badass Battery Monitor)
- Use this to see what is using your battery up.
Turn off any data syncing you don't need
Turn down screen brightness to an acceptable level
Make sure you close the facebook app because its a crazy battery drain
Give your battery a few days on a new rom to even out
This is what I can think of right now.
Good Luck all!

Horrible battery life on newish S4 Mini ("best" performance <3h)

Hey guys,
after dropping my beloved Nexus 4 to the concrete floor in May, I bought a new S4 mini in the electronic market because of it's decent size and all the fuzz about having a very good price-performance-ratio.
After a few weeks I already was fairly disappointed.
On an average work day (without WiFi) and little use (~30min OSD) the battery wouldn't last a full day. I tried the usual things like turning off GPS, bluetooth and using Wifi whenever possible (turning it off, when not in range), etc. I also used the App greenify which boosted my deepsleep in Wakelock Detector to stable 85+%.
When using GMaps/navigation my phone is getting hot (~50°C) and battery is drained within minutes. When trying to navigate out of the city (<15min navigation) one day my phone was discharged within 3 hours after a full charge. I got Wakelock Detector, Better Battery Stats and Battery Monitor Widget installed.
The only thing I found out, that when I am connected to Wifi the drain is a lot lower 1-2%/hour compared to when I am using 3G/H+ which results in 7-15%/hour (both when not using the phone), although there is no problem with signal quality. Recently my phone started to bottoming out rly hard when hitting the 20% mark. From there I can watch the battery dropping to 0% within a few minutes.
Things I tried so far:
- turning off features that are not in use (GPS, bluetooth, Wifi when not in range)
- make sure phone gets into deep sleep/greenify apps
- recalibrate akku
- reduce brightness & disable auto-brightness
Setup:
GT-I9195 bought in May 2015 from electronic market chain
CM 12.1 (Android 5.1.1, serranoltexx)
Standard CM Kernel
Baseband I9195XXUBML4
I can provide Screenshots from BMW, WD and BBS. Any ideas how to solve this or what else I could do?
Probably you should use something like better battery stats, to check
- if a service is going mad, then turn it off with disable service to test (most times happens with unclean flash)
- if you have an app with wakelocks
If you can't find anything that way, might be a hardware fault.
Personally if I came across this problem I would return the phone to stock Android and do some tests, see if the same happens again. CM12.1 can have issues across different same model phones. Try the Samsung Phone Info app to see how old your phone is. I'm guessing it was second hand? Some older revisions of the Mini had battery problems. Maybe a new battery is needed? Maybe.. As for the battery draining 20%-0% in minutes I have also suffered this on a brand new March 2015 device. Not all the time though it only happens with randomly once a week. But I put that down to the battery not been fully calibrated and then drained and recharged over the next 3 4 days, as I use a spare battery and swap out the batteries regularly which means my battery is very rarely calibrated.
All that said though I can easily get through an entire day if not 2. And using stock I'm able to get 4 and a half hours on average every time, maybe 4 hours of screen on time when using 3G a lot and GPS etc.

I have had the same problem as you.
I return twice my phone to vendor. But they could do anything.
I solved it with undervolting and underclocking my phone (only the low frequency).
I read from someone, you can undervolting 150 millivolt.
My experience, is undervolting 125 milivolt. and underclocking the low frequency at the minimum.
You didn't feel any difference, behalves that the phone is cooler and battery live is better.
My WiFi and Bluetooth are always on. I don't have to recharge my phone during the day.
It is so effective en transparent that I don't understand why Samsung didn't do it natively.
Hey,
I tried to apply some of your advice and flashed the newest stock rom for S4 Mini (Kitkat ...COE4).
In that process I recognized that the Baseband is not updated by CM and that the one that was installed when I bought it was fairly old (from 2013). Do you think that this might be part of the problem? (I sort of hate the Samsung Rom)
This week when working and not having Wifi all day, I managed to get 2h of SOT and still had around 25% left which I couldnt have gotten before imo. I only lose 1-4% per hour when the phone is not used. But still thats not pretty good, when ur saying you can get 4h with GPS and everything. I also didnt use GPS. And today when I restarted my phone it just went from 40-ish % to 15% without any reason. Any more ideas?
I installed BetterBatteryStats today and will try to give some more insight the next days. Wakelock detector said that I had 85% deep sleep (timeframe 1 day 2 hours).

No I bought it new from a electronic store (Media Markt). The app says that is was made on Oct 19th 2014 in Vietnam and that it is original/not refurbished.
How much do you gain by undervolting (SOT or % per hour when idle)?
How do you do it?
maybe the best way is to downgrade by flashing CM11 for example ...
(another way with stock + Alexax kernel + own debloat&freeze ... )
I have the same consumption problem with Resurection Remix LP too ..... very strange !
Lollipop is supposed to be less angry than Android 4.X.X ... but it seem have problem somewhere for our S4-mini sources maybe ,i don't know ...
This night I did some BBS tests:
Setup:
Stock Rom I previously installed (see posts above)
charged phone during evening
set up custom timepoint before I went to sleep
WLAN disabled
all apps greenyfied except those I deemed significant that they keep running (Whatsapp, calendar, Swiftkey, BBS, BMW, etc). Forgot newly installed app hoomn.
I had to upload the logfile to pastebin because it was too long for the xda forum: pastebin.ca/3256568 (I am not allowed to post URLs, sorry)
I lost 14% of battery during 9hrs (-1,6%/h). That's probably not too bad?
93% deep sleep, 33min awake time
Weird things I discovered/things I did not understand:
- negative Voltage loss?
- Wifi runtime 100% although I disabled it
- dominant wakelocks (count > 100, all of them < 30s): Alarm Manager, RILJ1, *net_scheduler*, GCM_CONN, ContextManagerWakeLock, Event Log Service, AlarmManager (com.sec.spp.push.Samsung Push Service), SyncLoopWakeLock, GCM_HB_ALARM
- dominant KWLs (count > 100): ril-fd (25min), bam_dmux_wakelock (13min), radio-interface (7min), PowerManagerService.WakeLocks (3min), mmc1_detect (1min), alarm_rtc, alarm, sec-charger-monitor, smdcntl0, pm8921_soc_lock, power-supply, KeyEvents, smsm_snapshot, qmuxd_port_wl_0, qmuxd_port_wl_1, smdcntl1, mmc0_detect
- Alarms (>20): ccc71.bmw (Battery Monitor Widget), android, com.google.android.gms, com.sec.spp.push
any ideas/assessments?

Occasional Poor Battery Life (Stats reveal nothing)

Some days by the evening, my battery is still at 70% other days it's flat. My usage patterns are very consistent. On a bad day, I captured this from the logs, and it looks unusual to me. Only 1hr of screen time, and nothing obvious from the other stats.
Anyone else seen this? (Rooted N5X with otherwise stock 6.01)

Look at all the time your phone is awake but your screen is off. I would say your wakelocks are causing your battery drain and that your battery stats reveal quite a lot. Try using Better Battery Stats to find out what your wakelocks are.
I have purchased better battery stats, but I can't see anything that looks like a culpret. Can someone who is experienced take a look?
Thanks.

There is a better battery stats app thread on xda
It looks like Google hogging it again, your phone is having trouble sleeping
Since 6 h 41 m 48 s Awake
(Screen Off) (): 1 h 8 m 49 s 17.1%
Level lost [%]: Bat.: -56%(100% to 44%) [8.4%/h]
com.google.android.gms (): Wakeups: 693 (1.7 / min)
*net_scheduler* (Google Services): 1 m 3 s Count:9224 0.3%
WearableSyncService (com.google.android.apps.fitness.Fit): 58 s Count:353 0.2%
NlpWakeLock (Google Services): 53 s Count:7094 0.2%
Etc etc
my phone does not doze properly, compared to my nexus 5, I think Google services are to blame.
I had to remove alot of Google apps from system and install from app store and stop syncs to have proper idle drain, and its better now.
Eg on my phone today, YouTube *net_scheduler* over 300 counts and 24mins awake, It started itself, nor am I subscribed to any users, it shouldn't of been running in the background and I'm having trouble deleting the app
Did a backup and a factory reset of my phone, and battery life is back to normal. At the same time I did upload SuperSU to 2.66 (I was on 2.61), and I noticed in the changelog some mention of fixes that fixed devices not sleeping.
It might be worth a shot to see if it helps others. Please report back if it does. I only noticed it after I had reset my phone (for the 3rd time, to fix battery life problems).
