Hiya.
I'm thinking of selling my 6 months old Galaxy Note 8.0. As much as having really great specs for an Android tablet I feel its age, let down by a now mediocre screen resolution and ppi and a two-generation old OS.
My current choices are:
1. Nexus 7 - Not my best choice as it only has 7-inch screen and as someone coming from an 8-inch I feel its a sort "downgrade". Yes, specs are as good if not better than the Note 8.0 but its just small for me for viewing and gaming.
2. Asus Memo Pad 8 - Another choice with (I heard) good stereo speakers and that's all. Having only 1GB RAM (and all the rest of the specs almost identical to the Note) its not a strong candidate for me.
3. Acer B1-730 - Until know its not yet officially announced/released yet. Hearing of a 7.9" screen is encouraging. Discouraging to know it might just come out having a dual-core processor. If it has a quad-core, 2GB RAM then I might consider.
4. LG G-Pad 8.3. - My strongest candidate so far. Slates the Nexus 7 and Note 8.0 in terms of benchmarks, specs, battery capacity and screen size. My only issue is LG might not update the OS beyond 4.4.2; not into rooting so would prefer the real deal.
5. Lenovo Yoga 8 - A so-so strong candidate with very good specs but let down by the same screen resolution with the Note 8.0, 1GB RAM and an odd design. Like the very long battery life tho. Having a MediaTek processor might be bad choice in terms of gaming and app compatibility.
Any advice or comment please?
How about the xperia z2 tablet?

Well, I'm in a mix as well. I gave my Nexus 7 2013 to my mom (for a reasonable price xP). I did that because it had a touch screen issue which I found terribly annoying. Look up "nexus 7 2013 grounding issue". Right now, I'm trying to decide over the galaxy tab 8.4 or the xperia z2. The z2 has amazing specs but lacks a bit in display. The galaxy tab pro 8.4 is ideal for me but lacks in a 32gb variant. At this time, I'm just barely holding on and waiting for any news on a nexus 8. Rumors speculate htc is making the new one (I doubt it) but nexus rarely fails at pricing and good specs. Good luck and enjoy your tab when you buy it.

None of what you listed are any better. As for screen resolution, I can't justify ppi and costs for anything below 10 inches. By the time you get around setting up a new replacement, there should be 4.4.x released for the Note 8.0.
So far having SD that supports 128GB, 4.4.x, digitizer, and Samsung versatility, makes the competition seem limited.
GT-N5110 & GT-N5120 - 64GB 633x on board, Status Official on SafeRooted OEM ROMs with Wanam Xposed and RootCloak. The only way to fly 8+ hours!
This badboy don't play with Play & Triangle away!
the only device that i can think of is Tab Pro 8.4
others kind of crappy...
I have got both note 8 and nexus 7 as for the screen resolution its noticeable I have reduced the icon size on my note so they could look a bit sharp. Nexus 7 screen is far better and the difference is there for someone who wants to notice. But I still love my n8 more for some reason

The problem with a Nexus 7 tablet (I had one for the past two years) is quality control isnt exactly top-class as numerous reports of hardware problems like speakers, buttons and the screen have been very common. And i also think its not an accurate description of a 7-inch tab as the on-screen capacitive buttons on the bottom and the battery/time/sound icons on top are occupying the real estate of the screen. So, I think its not a "true" 7-inch lne.
I want to keep my Note 8 but its two generations of OS Late. The ppi is again as I said its OK but its ageing. Samsung seems to be not listening to its customers when it comes to demand of updating its devices in the past 2 years which in my opinion is worth of Android 4.4.2 update.
The Tab Pro 8.4 is simply overpriced. I wont even consider getting that but if its under £250 for the base model then maybe I will.
For me the closest fight is between the G-Pad 8.3 and the MediaPad X1. If a Nexus 8 has been announced now I could wait.
Or I could wait for the 2nd-gen Tesco Hudl.

As I understand it 4.4 will limit our use of our 128GB SD card.
Apps can't write to SD card.
This is like Google taking off like Apple and because they don't like SD cards we are punished.
What is going on??

Well, it has been disabled, but if you root you can edit one of the config files to fix it or just run an xposed app.
No issues there... I will wait on 4.4.x as many of my apps still need some bugs fixed.

1) I'm not rooted so I'm stuck.
2) more important is that Google is trying to control Android the way Apple controls IOS.
This is not good!!!
On a different matter....
Is there a way I can make the notifications on the screen above and the on-screen capacitive buttons on the Nexus 7 fully transparent?

why not ask on a nexus 7 forum?
I'm kind of in the same situation, thinking about upgrading my Note 8. I've got a Note 3 for my phone, and I've been running the Note 3 ROM port (which is pretty awesome) for a while now, so... kind of redundant. I've liked my Note 8 a lot since the day I got it, but the Note 3 just destroys it performance-wise. I've been getting more into gaming lately, and there the difference is particularly noticeable. Additionally, I'm sure many are aware that many games simply devour the battery. Yesterday I think I went from fully charged down to the teens playing The Walking Dead (really cool game and totally ideal for a touch screen vs. PC version) for about an hour!
Also, I have to say that having 32 gigs of onboard storage is incredibly nice. I've got a ton of apps including several GB+ games on each device. On the Note 8 w/ 16 GB, I have 38(!) app data files moved to my extSdCard via FolderMount. On the Note 3 with 32 gigs, I have more apps installed overall, but with the exception of maybe a gig worth of apps to external storage (I'm still on 4.3, so for many apps in app info there's a "Move to SD" button), everything is straight-up installed on internal storage with a few gigs to spare.
I almost would prefer a Tab to a Note, because if I have an s-pen, I'm super reluctant to install non-TW ROMs, but right now I find the new Note 10.1 to be the most compelling device, mostly due to the 3 GB ram (and the 32 GB storage). I'd find the Tab Pro 8.4 much more compelling if only a 32 GB version was available. Anyways, I took a look at Swappa and it looks like there are new Note 10.1's for pretty reasonable prices. I just wish the Nexus 8 was more than vapor-ware at the moment, but I think I'll have to wait until some solid information emerges before making any final upgrade decisions (external SD port PLEASE!)
So yes, just roumors, but it is supposed to come in 5.1 inch and 5.5 inch. And anything close to a Note supposedly won't be released next year.
Well, samsung, get your act together. EVERYONE is doing a 5.5 by now. I could possibly live without a stylus but why downsize? I can't use my Note 4 for another 2 years. If they don't get their act together in a year, I will be forced to switch to another manufacturer (and tempted to if in February s8 "pro" doesn't deliver). And in this case I am even more glad I got rid of the Note 7 because if they plan to abolish anything like the Note, they will have no further advantage out there, ever. If N 4 is to be my last Note with nothing further to buy from them in the future...better to be rid of the concept now than later and find a replacement.
Come on Samsung!!! Do you WANT to bury yourself?
...and you believe unsubstantiated rumours? OK then....
Samsung's business model has been two flagships each each in major territories since 2011, including 2015 when Europe still got the S6 Edge+
I'd still expect a S8 / S8 Edge in Q1 and something bigger in Q3. Remember the press are reaching here as Samsung have said nothing.

Is it wise for you to get so worked up about rumours? Only Samsung know their future policy and why would anyone assume they will change direction?
In as far as the Note 7 and future Note range, Samsung need time, they need time to get things right.
You ask Samsung to "Get your act together", Have you any proof they are not doing so? The media have done enough damage to Samsung and with respect all you are doing is adding to the hysteria with posts like that.
Ryland
Samsung should come out with a line called...Samsung Fire...instead of a bundle pack they should just hand out fire extinguisher's with the phone.
No, no proof, I said it is roumers, I named the post roumors, but since I have no way to reach Samsung and since some people say there are all sorts of moles, spys and whatnot here, I hope it gets to Samsung somehow that there is a reason they had so many faithful Note customers and to please not go changing it. Sorry if I care about what happens next. I do. I don't want them to mess up everything. This is a forum, a place to share opinions and yes, even roumors. I don't see how I did anything wrong here.

Samsung Galaxy S8 - release date & specs - rumors
Your mistaken rumours with facts. I'm sure Samsung will stick to their product roadmap, as their have been indications they are not bringing the S8 forward and it will debut in Q1 (late February).
I'd expect things next year to broadly be something like this...
Feb / March 2017
S8 / S8 Edge / S8 Pro
Eynos 8995 / SD 821 (or 830 if announced by Qualcomm soon)
6GB RAM
32GB / 64GB on-board storage
5.2 or 5.2-inch and 5.5-inch options at either 1440p or 2160p SAMOLED
IRIS scanner
IP68 waterproofing
SD card expansion (with UFS 2.0 support)
Secure Folder
I'd expect the larger screened phone coming in Q3 to maintain a 5.7-inch screen or larger (and hopefully still be called Note8 (see how that's different to Note 8.0 before anyone counters...).

To add on.. i guess the rom will be slightly higher. Prob baseline will still be 32GB. Follow by 64, 128, 256. With expandable memory of course. And probably do away 3.5mm jack?

I doubt Samsung will go for more than a 64GB variant (unless they drop 32GB and do offer 128GB), simply as they'll need headroom for the larger model later in the year. Anyway, with SD expansion, this is moot really.
As for dropping the 3.5mm jack, I'd hope not - it's not really reflected well on Apple and I'd hope Samsung realise they don't need to do the same.

Absolutely insensitive.
I would much rather Samsung give out a teddy bear and a security blankey. Should make the overly sensitive ones feel much better about themselves.
I am currently a somewhat happy owner of a Sony Z3 Compact. Which, hardware wise, was perfect for me 2 years ago. (Small form factor, ext SDcard port, waterproof*, unlockable bootloader, and flagship hardware CPU/GPU) But due to it's unpopularity in sales & the difficulty Sony has put in the way of AOSP community developers effectively I'm stuck at 5.1.1 LP (AOSP derivative ROM) as a stable daily driver.
So, I'm looking at either a gently used 5X, or a new OnePlusX. Both will let me flash easily, but I lose an external SD card with the 5X. I know the responses here will be somewhat biased, but I'm also posting this within the OnePlusX forum to gauge both sides of the responses.
(And no, I don't want to pay ~$700-800 for a 128GB Pixel. I don't have that kind of money to burn. And the 5.5" of the OP3T is bigger than I want to have in my hands / pocket.)
So get the 5X? Get a new OPX? Anything else on the horizon I'm missing? (Wait for ---- ?)
Thanks in advance for your opinions.
buy a new 5x? its the same price (around 250eu) and 5x should be better at everything other than ram
a cheaper alternative could be moto g4 (dual). is it "worse" phone? yes, but its around 80eu cheaper too, and imo more sensible choise than oneplusx
I say go for the 5x. the internal memory for the 5x is doable since it comes with either a 16gb, 32gb, or 128gb, hopefully the used one has a 32gb so you want have to worry about space that much
I have the Xperia 1 since day one and I love the phone. I was thinking about upgrading to the The Xperia 1 II but the only noticeable changes are the cameras, wireless charging and the headphones jack. The display is the same as far as I know. So do you think I should wait for the 2021 xperia flagship?
more internal space 256 GB 0_o
but no i'll wait couple monthe and see how the price drops
I'm waiting for one to be available and I will be buying. Wanted PRO 5G but looks like that may be still in development.

I don't know if the price will drop in the beginning. Judging from Xperia 1 the price started to drop after 6 months. And about the internal space I have an SD card on mine it was easier that way to transfer the large clips recorded with the cinema Pro app so I will just move the SD card over to the new phone.

I think that the Xperia 1 II is 5G it depends on the region. On the UK Sony site it says that the phone is 5G.
It is but not on ATT in US
Pre-ordered with B&H
@tonev
i need Dual SIM but its a hybrid Dual SIM
1 SIM with an SD or 2 SIM without an SD
i loved my Z3+ full dual SIM 2 SIM's and SD same time
Definitely looking at it (feeling the flat edges), but the Xperia 1 is serving me very well. Any frustration I have with this device is so minor that I can't justify a new purchase now.
I will wait until I crack the screen or lose the phone to justify such consumerist behavior, I have to think of being sustainable now, both financially and environmentally.
Sony aren't making it easy for us to buy this thing. I'm keen because it will have wireless charging and more internal storage. I don't give a stuff about the headphone jack as I moved to wireless a few years ago and won't go back.
If I could get it in white tomorrow I'd place an order straight away but as usual, Sony do this crap thing they always do with colours and there is no sign of it coming anywhere near UK. For the Xperia 1 I had to order a whitey from Amazon Germany.
I'm disappointed to read however that the brightness levels are still not good, the Xperia 1 is poor in this respect in direct sunlight and got rightly slated for this and it doesn't seem that Sony has taken heed.
The flat edges though.....at last, no more of this curved ****e.....hoorah. Just pulled out my original Xperia Z with it's wonderful block like build....ahhhh, that feels good.
No i am happy with my x1 and x1 mark 2 is just a small improvement not so much and only because the headphone jack, wireless charging and more internal space ? Still no, 128gb is enough with a 400gb sd card ??
Screen color is 1billion this is a big step and 90ghz refresh rate and snapdragon 865 performance is high and the management is improve thanks to hs power control
Had the X1 since December and love it! From what I've seen the X1 ii is an incremental improvement in some ways and additional features if you need them. If it didn't have the X1 now, coming from an XZ Premium I'd seriously consider the X 1 ii. For now, I'll wait see what the Xperia Pro offers as I hear is will support US 5G. Honestly, I"m very happy with the X1 I"ll probably wait regardless.
While I would love the change in camera from the mark I (80mm focal rather than 50mm), the mark I doesn't have anything that make me want to change it for now and for anything else, I will see what will be on the market in one or two years I guess. But Mark II is a good improvement, I hope they will keep this direction with next ones.
I just hope the photopro app will be ported to the mark I.
No, will keep my Xperia 1 for a year or so, maybe more, until I see a major hardware upgrade (like periscope zoom)
I already have!! For £818 with headphones is a no brainer! I will sell the headphones for at least £200, my old Xperia 1 for £300 so in the end I'll pay only £318 for an upgrade Cant wait for it
I am happy with the xperia 1, I wait for the Xperia mark 3 Next year.
This year play PS5 and sony oled a8
Enviado desde mi J9110 mediante Tapatalk
It looks to be an awesome phone, but I'm happy with my Xperia 1 and I'll wait for more upgrades. A mark III or mark IV will not only have more significant hardware upgrades, but also more refined and advanced software like newer versions of Cinema and Photo Pro and Android 11 or 12.
I have an Xperia 1 right now. As much as I liked the design of mark II. The price is not worth it since I can't use any 5g band of T-Mobile. Hopefully, the Xperia next year support more bands.
Hey all! I looking to upgrade from a OnePlus 6. I am interested in custom roms (LineageOS/Microg) and the free availability of the MSM tool to help me in the case of bricking.
Is a new OnePlus 9 only (latest) phone left on the market that can still do this, or is it a dying breed?
How are people liking the curved edge of the screen? Are accidental touches a thing with a case?
Is battery life a problem, or would a custom rom and lowering the clock of the processor via root be necessary?
Is 8GB RAM enough? I'm not into gaming.
Any other issues I should be aware of, such as the upgrade to Android 13?
OR, would it be smarter to look elsewhere, even a OnePlus 10/11 and simply "debloat"?
Thanks!

Great...after I ordered it, the vendor says they made a mistake and there was no stock to begin with, so I got refunded. So much for inventory tracking systems...
Now I have a choice of a Black OnePlus 9 8gb/128gb or a Black OnePlus 9 Pro 8gb/128gb for €190 more.
Any opinions on the non-pro variant? Not sure how 8gb will be long-term, but I am still looking for stock in a 12gb option.

Go to a local electronic store like BestBuy and see if they can locate one for you. That's what I did, but you may not get the color you want.
Yeah, good idea, although no BestBuy in the EU. Still combing the internet for a 12/256 variant--i'm sure to find something.

Why do you say that? Bad experience with the device?
Also, unless Carl Pei can make the Nothing Phone (2) into a modern (and better) OnePlus 5T, not sure it would be worth waiting. But who knows...
I would prefer a device that I can actually fully control, otherwise, I'd just go iPhone and line Tim Apple's pockets some more.

I would suggest to go with Samsung s23+, nothing phone 2, or iPhone 13
But my recommendation is to wait for nothing phone 2,it gonna be smartphone of the year and nothing phone has best software experience , so don't make yourself regret and cancel the 9p order
To each his own!
I have the pro 8gb variant. Fantastic device. Doesn't lag at all. Battery lasts till afternoon and then I can charge it at half an hour. Cameras are great, but do note that they are not "iphone 14 pro great". No ghost touches. The only two things I am complaining is that I would love a 3.5mm jack and a little stronger reception.
