Question Pixel Security Chip - Google Pixel 6 Pro

I havent seen much discussion on this, maybe its an old topic, but whats the deal with the security chip that was talked about during the release. Not sure what this chip is doing. Not that I do much with sideloading/Bootlock, but curious if it will have any impact on those.

It's a busy little chipset and a liability if you don't want it's services. No way now to turn off encryption starting with Android R.

Titan M chip is a new component added by Google on Pixel 3, which is responsible for the security of the phone.

I suspect that its basically something like TEE. Likely not a big deal to bypass and *probably* not a major issue.
But yeah, if I don't know *exactly* what its doing with *MY* data, it isn't security, its just more attack surface.

May not be possible to bypass, deliberately.
It's to reduce main processor workload since Android 11 and up just increased it.
In other words another system parasite in the name of security...

Opinion: Sounds legit. Just wanted to share the news. Nothing official of course.
I guess these "high positioned personnel" are the ones who pushed for batteries to be made by Samsung SDI. What makes it even more disappointing is, the replacement units are still SDI batteries. While we've heard nothing from the China region units with ATL batteries.
Samsung should shut their factory down and just stick with the winning formula.

How do you know this? You don't. We don't know the cause yet.
Well! Tell them to fu** ing explain to us what was it they messed up so bad to infringe our personal property, safety and make us a ton of expences we will never get back!! Tell them they should be convincingnus they are not incompetent to make electronisc anymore in the first place!!
Its not the batteries that are causing the exploding. Its the tweaking of the software that controls the processor to run fast charging. Samsung tried to get a faster charge than all previous devices and screwed the pooch on the software. They can probably issue a software/firmware update but people will not be happy and it may not be a permanent fix.
I have turned fast charging off via the cable and wireless. I have zero over heating problems, zero lag issues, phone is acting like a phone. the real catch is concealing it when traveling on a plane etc.... That is the hard part. I will probably turn my Note 3 into my travel device for music and games and such. Like a glorified Android iPod touch. Ill just turn disable to mobile data and phone stuff, hide the sim card removed icon.
A lot of work still. Damnit Samsung.....
My note 7's (both the original and the replacement) have worked basically perfectly. They don't overheat, don't lag, really not a single problem. The Note 7 is by far the best overall smartphone made to date. Best display, best display to overall size ratio, best camera, waterproof, etc. Only two issues I would say are the edge display which makes a tempered screen protector impossible and a so-so external speaker. And of course the kicker - the non-removable battery. Had they just made it with a removable battery this issue would have not been a phone-killer. It is sad that the best phone ever made to date is killed off like this. And we still have no definitive answer to what is the problem? Seems incomprehensible.

That sounds like speculation. These devices have been melting without being charged. We don't even know if Samsung knows what the actual problem is. Hopefully it all comes out so we get some reassurance about their next phones.
I read a lil bit ago that they didn't know what the actual problem was which is why they decided to kill it. They had over 100 people testing them round the clock and could not duplicate the issue of causing one to smoke/catch fire... of course though they were an anonymous
person close to the situation.

Look, I get it, I want to keep my phone as well, and I am not sure what I will do. But to fly with it, while you base the rest on rumors, is plain irresponsible. What you do at home is your business, but getting on a plane with several hundred passengers and a possibly defective phone isn't (there's literally no way for you to tell whether your phone is safe or not). Samsung did after all improve the replacements as they are reportedly catching fire without being charged.

To root or not to root.

It's been a few years since I've had an Android phone. All my past phones I've rooted, for various reasons. Most of them involved custom kernels, themes, and Cyanogenmod. What are some of the best reasons to root, and best reasons to stay stock?
If I root, I'll need to return my phone to Verizon and order one from Google, or wait and hope someone unlocks the bootloader. Either way I'm returning it for the 128GB version.
Thoughts?
The main reason I root my device is for Adaway so I can block ads with the HOSTS file at a global level (no ads in apps, yay!). Heck, I already have the bootloader unlocked, don't care if it breaks Android Pay (don't use it anyways other then to store my rewards cards information) and waiting for cf to work his magic on getting root working on this sexy device.
Down side of rooting is that you don't get the updates that gets pushed out unless you do it yourself (that and no Android Pay if that's something you use like I said above).
In terms of keeping the Verizon version or getting the Google Play version, if it was me, I'd get the Google Play version (which is what I did, second time I've gotten a phone outside of Verizon so they can't control my device). Although I'm sure after enough time someone could probably crack the bootloader but you never know.
I root for many reasons. Prominent among them is the ability to change the colors of the UI. White backgrounds are hard on my eyes and so over the years I have used CMTE, Layers, TBO, and now Substratum to change to darker backgrounds. Some apps have a dark mode you can use without root, but many do not. Root opens up a whole new dimension of customizations not only in appearance but also in performance.

Probably because of the discounted 2 year or monthly payment option. Some smart people still have smaller budgets or wives who wouldn't understand laying out $800 - $1000 to replace a phone just because you want to root. Those people hope someone will figure out a way to unlock and root. I've got the money but my wife would go ballistic

With all due respect, buying a google phone without rooting and tinkering with it is like going to michelin starred restaurant to pay $100 for a glass of water. Oh, and my reasons are the freedom of customizability and custom kernels, custom kernels can make your phone twice as fast with even better battery life if done right.

I didn't got it through Verizon. I said I got it through the Google Store (thus the outside of Verizon part). Screw getting phones through Verizon. Hate that they forced locked down bootloader's.

That was true with Nexus phones. The Pixel is being marketed as something else entirely. I think we'll be hard pressed to see any real gains from devs here. Google is putting a lot of work into these phones. I trust the minds at Google this time moreso than the devs on here.

I'm not impressed with the "minds" at Google.
For me to pay that kind of price, I need, at least 5.75" screen, front stereo speakers, higher degree of water proofing. Also, to echo a famous quote : "White UIs must die!" And those bezels! Ugh!
Google assistant is nearly useless to those of us who prefer not to publicly audibilize our searches. So all I would gain would be a snappier OS and a first rate camera. Too many cons outweigh the pros. I wish Google and the sort of folks that they appear to be targeting all the best. I also hope there is much Dev activity for it.

Ease of access, availability, no need for an application for financing, the expectation that someone will crack the bootloader, buying in a no tax state.

-I do wish the screen size was larger considering it has on-screen buttons, and that massive chin... no reason it couldn't have been 5.7" again.
-Stereo speakers would have been nice too. No idea why they couldn't copy the iPhone and HTC 10 considering the speakers are in the same position. Maybe a dev will actually make this happen if the earpiece is capable.
-I actually love the UI.
-Everyone hates the bezel. I think they did it to keep a larger battery in the phone, and to probably make it look like an iPhone to the masses.
-Google Assistant is great. I never really used voice commands much, but I have been forcing myself to use them more. They are incredibly quick, efficient, and convenient. No reason to not use them even in public dude. Who gives a damn what people think about your searches. You're never going to see the same people in public anyway.
The snappy OS and first rate camera are things that Android has absolutely needed in a phone. The Pixels bring the best of ALL the basics. And no phone has really done that with Android before. OEMs get too caught up in adding gimmicks and "features" and end up slowing down the phone, hampering basic usability (i.e. what we use our phones for 90+% of the time).

I do hope they tweak it later to allow typing to the assistant like Allo but I guess then it's not a whole lot different than typing in the search bar anyways.

Good points. I'm glad you trust the uncaring public. I, however, don't. I guess I am just slightly paranoid that way. Also there are many situations where it might disturb other folks to have me gabbing on my phone. Sure, assistant is neat but just not worth it to me. Still, I find myself checking on the availability of the 128gb model as if I am irresistibly drawn to it. My heart wants it but my head is saying no.
There's every reason to root, and only one reason to not root.
Reasons to root:
Kernel modifications to increase battery life. (Sure the Pixel can go 2 days easily on one charge, but why not make it 3?).
Filesystem access. The heart of any computer should at the very least give you filesystem access. It boggles the mind why phones won't give this option when this is a computer that you carry with you every day. Maybe you want to write your own apps, hide personal files somewhere outside of the visible directories like Downloads.
Breaking down barriers carriers put forth to limit you in a walled garden. Whatever it may be. Video codecs for example. Open source media servers that aren't approved on the app stores, I can go on and on.
Only reason to not root:
Android Pay. I absolutely love this ability. I personally think that you SHOULD be able to use this option while rooted. Using SU app, and encryption of your card should be enough to protect your card information. (Don't say it can't because it can.) Rooted apps cannot work unless you give them access via the SU app as added security, and even if they manage to grab your encrypted card information because you allowed some program you've never heard of root access and it steals your encrypted account information, it would take them 1 million years to brute force decrypt it if using a high enough encryption scheme on it. You can just change your virtual account on a whim, and do so ever 6 months, cancelling your old account in case it was ever grabbed making the old one null and void for the hacker if he does eventually get lucky and break it. Your account will never get owned if these practices were followed.
Blatently not allowing you choice to use something like android pay is big brother coddling you like a baby. I'm a grown ass man, and know how to secure my ****. If you don't know how to, then you shouldn't be doing it as your the reason Google puts these sort of restrictions on phones like mine.

You are actually confusing me more. I checked both Verizon and Google Store's pricings and financing options and saw they are pretty much the same.
Verizon -- $0 Down (for qualified customers) $36.24/mo for 24 months; 0% APR Retail Price: $869.99 -- sim locked maybe?, and locked bootloader.
Google Store -- $869.00 or $36.21 / Month x 24 times, thru Google Store Financing -- sim free, and unlockable bootloader.

More reasons to root:
o backup and restore apk and data anytime.
o nandroid backup for ability to test things.
o custom roms for obvious reasons.
o exposed anyone?
o ability to upgrade to new os versions even after phone makers stopped supporting the devices.
o to satisfy the addictive urge to flash every week!
The SafetyNet is a great threat for most of us here. Some apps, including Android Pay, won't run anymore. If more apps start utilizing the system, we won't be able to enjoy our phones and everyone will be migrating to the Appleland:crying:

Really I don't get it. Doesn't make any sense.
Google has already developed a very good AI, and is still developing it. You're a phone manufacturer. Why would you work on your own AI, just to confuse buyers and make the phone even more crowded with several cloned APPS which do exactly the same thing?
Does Samsung really think they could do better with Bixby? (or whatever they will call their AI)... And even if they did... Don't they have way more important priorities like... Non exploding batteries? Stereo Speakers? 4k Screen? Dunno, Phone stuff maybe? Instead of the 1123123th assistant which starts an Alarm for you?
This would make only sense if they would split their ways apart from Google and use another operating system right? Well, no way they are leaving Google. That won't happen. Even Microsoft can't manage to have enough Apps to please users on the Windows Store..
So what's the Point Samsung? Why work on a super useless AI which, (and that one is for sure), will have many compatibility issues and users will try to find a way to uninstall or disable it?
Why try to have a say in all departments and do nothing properly at the end, instead on focusing on the Phone itself?
I'll reserve judgement for now. Maybe they have something different to offer compared to Google.
I think Samsung realize AI is the next milestone in smartphone technology, so they have to come up with something to get us consumers to purchase their products and not the Pixel.

And Google's not doing all of that now? Android enthusiasts seem to forget that Android only exists to further Google's core business which is advertising revenue through monetizing user data.
As for why a Samsung AI makes sense it's about an eco-system, not a product. Samsung's SmartThings is an IoT leader and providing something similar to Alexa makes more sense than having all of you IoT users trying to figure out how to make Alexa work with them. Whether Samsung's successful and competitive remains to be seen but their intent is certainly logical.

Forget this phone, and android, moving to iPhone

I've been been on android since the g1 days, got every new android phone that everyone said was great. I had the first galaxy phone, the original nexus 1, the nexus 5, the htc one, the oneplus 3t, even note phones. Today I decided to leave this inferior product behind. How delusional have I been saying android is better all this time. Here's the thing, iPhone works. I can no longer connect to WiFi networks anymore because of some security update. I am still pissed I paid for a camera I can't use. I'm tired of missing calls because this phone decides to put itself on do not disturb. The final straw that broke the camels back is location settings and privacy. Apple decided to let people protect their privacy, google is actively trying to stop people from protecting their privacy. Take for example find my phone which is useless now unless you have location turned on at all times. WHY......? I am able to turn on location remotely on Samsung phones but here is google blocking your from doing it. If you loose your phone your freaked unless you let google know exactly where you are 24 hours a day. Forget GOOGLE, Forget ANDROID, Forget ONEPLUS!

Um wtf, what the heck is wrong lool.
Technically if I hacked your google account, I know is where you are.
So that might be good.
Otherwise of location, you can disable every app instead of the system applications related to find my phone.
I use an iPhone and I can say I support the only use location while using the app and such features.
But apple fracks up in regards to downloading stuff and is more restrictive than android.
Plus my iPhone apps are all 110 mb lmao, my mobile data will finish soon if I download anything.
NOT TO MENTION THE 1GB CACHE in a single APP THAT TAKES UP MY PHONE STORAGE IN AN APP, for 0 reasons idk why there's that much cache.

So does my 10+ and it's drop dead gorgeous. Looking exactly like I want it too.
A steeper learning curve but with many more options. I would have paid $400 more for 512gb of iPhone memory and not had the additional 1tb expansion capacity. All my PCs are dual drive or higher with 1GB of storage or more.
My favorite one fits in my hand...
Note: iPhone maps work so much better than Gmaps, other than that... I'm not impressed.

Well, Seconding this post. I agree, in my latent opinion it is clear that both platforms have pros and cons respectively.
The iPhone settings are a mess... they give me a headache. Way too dumbed down.
Plus I doubt there's a package disabler that works on a stock iPhone

Well that's what 2 factor authentication is for. I have had that active for years. Whats the point of disabling access to other applications when applications can just keep tabs on other applications. How about battery life? This has irked me ever since android removed the option to turn off GPS and leave location on. They obviously did it for a reason, to get more accurate information about you. BTW it has been reported that google actively tries to bury and confuse users about its location settings. I'm not worried about my data, plan I don't pay it, but if I did what good does it do me since I can't connect to any enterprise wifi. I spend half of my day at work unable to connect to WiFi an relying solely on data.

A steeper learning curve but with many more options. I would have paid $400 more for 512gb of iPhone memory and not had the additional 1tb expansion capacity. All my PCs are dual drive or higher with 1GB of storage or more.

I gave up on Samsung too, I hate their update lottery. My favorite computer is also my phone that's why wifi is important to me. I used to print documents straight from my phone at work because it is faster. I can't do that anymore. Unless I downgrade to a more unsecure version of android. Whats the point of security updates if I have to downgrade making my phone more vounarable just to get basic functionality back.

Lets assume I'm not a noob......... Let's assume I can actually configure phones to my liking like I have been doing so since the very first android came out. Lets assume I have been here for the whole ride since cyanogenmod. Configuration is not the issue. I would not care if it was just google tracking me. I can disable location history but that's not the issue here. Your making this issue about one thing. Read my post its an aggregate of things. Again this is basic functionality. Sony got sued for removing the ability to load linux to its system, here is oneplus completely dissabling and rendering useless something they charged money for.

Each Jailbreak depend a hack / breach, so each time you must wait for a jalbreak for a new iOS version or iOS fixed version (Apple block each time Jailbreak on new version). Above all even with Jailbreak there a lot of things not availbable on iOS, and the first reason is now all iOS users don't care Jailbreak... They want the lastest iOS version without headache.
For Android, Root is for a lot of OEM granted/allowed (OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo, etc...) and don't void warranty, only Desimlock tools / Changing IMEI void warranty.
This OEM share their model kernel source and root can be granted by simply patching boot and/or using a custom recovery like TWRP.

Well were often stuck with what android gives us. Like updates, my sons g6 never got one. You complain that your stuck with what they give you but you are content with the mess android is accross its many vendors. It's been 13 years since android came out and every year a new plan to make updating easier. Remember project treble? All failed promises.

The security hype is just that. My 10+ Pie does fine in the real world. Same firmware/updates for the last 1.5 years.
Your mistake was updating.
I picked off a trojan preloader and a malware jpeg over a year ago, no damage.
That same malware likely breach the latest updated Pixel just as easily. In the last year zero breaches.
A phone is only as secure as the person who operates it. I don't use wifi and limit bt use in high usage areas because vulnerabilities in this OS... which also have never nailed me. Regardless all my data is redundantly safeguarded and a complete reload takes me about 2 hours with no internet because I have a SD card/data drive*. So even if I get nailed it's not going to eat too much time. I'm readily to reload *now* if need be.
*if that's compromised add another 5-6 hours to the reload time. Still no critital data loss.

Good to know I have to root my phone just to make it functional because that's what we have all been doing all this time. You act like its a feature instead of a coping mechanism. Seems about the same as fidgeting; it wastes time jumping from one platform to another if not needed.
Easiest fix would be to flash back to the firmware that was working for you. When Samsung or Google drop the ball (and they frequently do) don't pick it up, instead use the one you got your hands on.
I will likely will be using Pie for years to come as Android 11 is flat spinning in at a higher sink rate than 10 and accelerating. A10 was the last usable Android OS and it has some real nasty usability issues that Pie doesn't have.
For what? To emulate Apple? Idiots.
That rotten OS put more challenges on Samsung's plate to try to make it usable but Sammy can only do so much with rancid base code.

I've been a huge fan of the Pixel since the original XL. Dealing with this phone from day one has been a struggle. The voice dictation is terrible. The worst I've ever had on a pixel. Also the phone is my daily driver and sometimes I can't even work with this phone. Really holding out for an update to fix the phone so that I can love it, but I think I'm more patient than most. I feel like replying with a real world experience to every made by Google tweet, but I'm not out to jeopardize their business and I understand new tech takes a little while to achieve its full potential. But there needs to be some heads rolling at Google. There's been issues with every Google Pixel launch and this I think is the worst from my experience. I'll say the same thing I said in another thread...
The Pixel 6 is a new platform on new hardware. There are going to be teething issues. Expecting perfection isn't realistic. Google has been using Snapdragon SoC's since the Nexus 4, and this is their first foray using their own hardware. When Apple introduced the A7 in the iPhone 5S, they had the same problem - a lot of stability and feature issues.
Remember that OEMs have to make compromises in order to get everything they want into a reasonable package. Bigger battery means less space for the electronics, and heat becomes a bigger problem. Bigger display and more powerful processor means more battery drain. With handheld devices, weight and size are significant issues as well.
If you want stability, there are other OEMs to choose from that are sticking to established hardware - such as Samsung, using both Qualcomm and their own Exynos systems. The Pixel series has been pretty solid up to this point, so while the 6 and 6 Pro have certainly had a lot of issues, the next generation will be improved, as will the next after that, and so on.
When you buy a Pixel, it's for vanilla Android with the Google experience. Don't expect much more than that.

man, i really wish my experience was like yours. i bought into Google's P6 hype for sure... i purchased the phone for dual-sim connectivity so i could use one device for my personal and biz numbers. i started with an AT&T version, returned it due to connectivity issues, and purchased an unlocked version that "seemed" to work a little better. however, inconsistent connectivity (no cellular signal, dropped calls, dropped wifi) forced me to put the phone away for now, and switch to a dual-sim S21 Ultra. i'm willing to give Google a chance to address the connectivity issues, but my confidence in their ability to do so is pretty low right now.

Really this is Google's doing and not singularly the P6 Pro itself; Android 12 is a huge part of the problem. Android 11 was no gem either.
Following Apple's lead like a lost puppy was one of their biggest mistakes. Google Android degrades their market edge by doing so and ultimately fails their customers.
A large part of Google's problem is that they are also control freaks. They want to push their cloud services at all costs even if it conflicts with the customer's best interests. They learned that from MS.

I don't even know who that is, nor do I really care. However, and this is a big but, if he has a following of thousands of users who buy phones for multiple family members and go on social media platforms then it becomes a problem. Not here because it seems no one is on social media round these parts, but this is the extreme minority. So call it where it belongs, the phone is buggy.. big time. I'm not talking about battery life either, I'm talking about not being able to make a phone call or receive a text. That is major. If I want stability I go with one of the big guns, Apple or Google. Pure iPhone experience and pure Android experience. There is nothing pure about this Pixel 6 series. OEMs compromising and releasing a device that is obviously flawed is not a great model for success. I don't want a Samsung or an iPhone. I want a Pixel. There is absolutely no reason I should put up with a test device when they touted this as the phone of the year. Next generation doesn't interest me right about now. I want a phone with security updates that are current and a device that always can receive a phone call and text. It is not the Pixel 6 no matter how many excuses you can come up with.
If this was a test device at least tell me that. If they are working out problems fitting stuff in then let me know. I easily could have kept my pristine P5 but I was led to believe this was a finished product and, I repeat, the phone of the year. the iPhone killer the every other phone killer. Well the P6 just got killed by their own hands and if you can't admit it then nothing I can say will change your mind.
I got a P6 Pro at launch and I haven't had any major issues or bugs. I'm on Dec update and I think I experienced the network drop thing only twice. I restarted my phone and everything was back to normal.
No other issues though..

i was on s21 ultra and switch to pixel6 pro if iam kinda sad? yes definetly and iam not big fan of samsung but compare to p6 pro samsung was way better
I bought the unlocked version, and I've had no problems to speak of. My former daily driver was an iPhone 12 Pro Max. Been switching my VZ SIM back and forth to see which one I'll stick with.

Following Apple's lead like a lost puppy was one of their biggest mistakes. Google Android degrades their market edge by doing so and ultimately fails their customers.
A large part of Google's problem is that they are also control freaks. They want to push their cloud services at all costs even if it conflicts with the customer's best interests. They learned that from MS.

My concern is that Google may not find a solution for the P6P reception problems and will have a Nexus 6P issue on its hands. Lawsuits caused many Nexus 6P to be replaced with Pixels so in theory it could happen again but 10 months is a long way from now.
Somebody other has problem with photo quality and strange artifacts? Here look in bright part ....pls dont be a stupid and dont say its becouse saturation or something photo is normal standard photo with no setup right from camera
I'm on Dec build in UK (not sure if that makes a difference but O2 network), I have had small teething issues but nothing like some of the major bugs that have been mentioned. Are we using different variants or something?

If this was a test device at least tell me that. If they are working out problems fitting stuff in then let me know. I easily could have kept my pristine P5 but I was led to believe this was a finished product and, I repeat, the phone of the year. the iPhone killer the every other phone killer. Well the P6 just got killed by their own hands and if you can't admit it then nothing I can say will change your mind.

He's got 15.2 million subscribers on YouTube. But I agree with you. You would think Google put a little more resources behind it, especially with their big marketing push.
I have a typo and almost every single sentence when doing voice dictation. Maybe I have a stroke happening and my speech is the issue but I'm heavily dependent on it and have been relying on it for years without a problem.
It's just one of the many bugs I'm dealing with, but by no means the end of the world... I ran the A12 betas on my 4XL and it was a rather good experience. Basically all the new features I use specific to the 6pro are broken. I'm hoping that January will be our lucky month
The only issue I have is a bluetooth audio streaming. I need to reconnect it one or two times to make it work.
yeah my second Pixel 6 pro went back to google yesterday, I have had issues with both 6 pro`s I have had, so I`m back to my 9 pro for now. guess wait and see what happens with the S22 ultra or the 10 pro.
