was slogging thru a huge ewaste lot and found one of these suckers, just like the one that got me through primary school. decided to get it up and running for nostalgia's sake.
dont bother buying new battery just solder either cell of iphone x max battery or any other cell that fits onto the protection board/bms board of the original borked battery then tape in place
* htcdev is still up but got to use internet explorer
* use this to get fastboot working on windows 8.1/win10 https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...windows-8-1-latest-fix-as-of-8-25-14.2858337/
* dev host roms gone but I think I might have a spinning hdd in storage with some old roms but don't hold your breath
might try to compile some roms for this sucker just for old times sake
I was just digging through my collection of old phones to get working again for fun and was going to play with the inc2. any way to get a hold of the Verizon 4.0 OTA files? mines still loaded with 2.3GB.

Hello guys first post, just popping in to say hi and ask a few questions.
So i purchased an iPhone 4 on launch day (pre ordered) loved it when it came was thinking great better battery life nice sweet iOS with multitasking etc.
However to my dismay battery life can only be described as shocking, with no apps running in standby it would go down by around 10% an hour. Then i would get crashes whilst quiting apps. Then the final nail came for the apple shaped coffin during an iOS update (which literally just changed the shape of the signals bars near enough) my phone got stuck in recovery mode so i got it repaired and now am getting it refunded.
During this period I though that little green android fella is looking rather attractive so i popped down to my local O2 shop and bought a Desire for £330 on Pay as You Go (my contract sim is being used with it though).
And you know what I couldn't be happier the battery life so far is on par even though i've only had it a few days. The customisation is great, the screen isnt as clear but to be honest i don't spend my day with my nose touching the glass looking for seperate pixels. Oh and to be honest little rain drops and the windscreen wiper coming across the screen when it's raining is worth the phone's price alone.
Only one question is there any way to get the phone to wake up by using say the track pad button instead of the Power button?
So yeah hope I enjoy my stay here and hopefully learn a lot from you guys and hopefully help others.
Regards Wingzer.
P.S they should have a little android toy as a smiley
Hello matey and welcome. Ive had a few phones myself with o2, palm pre, iphone, winmo, blackberry, symbian and so far android is by far the best in terms of what you can do and how it looks (although webos is pretty sweet in the slickness factor)
anyway the desire is a cracking phone but to wake it on the trackpad your going to have to root it. This is probably the best place to be looking if your going to root (look in the development section) or pop over to modaco.
Personally I rooted, I wasnt going to but the lack of app storage space pushed me to it and although I tried to stick around the sense roms ive now moved over to stock android and its much better for me but you do lose that fancy weather animation (which i do miss)
There is an app on marketplace that will wake up the phone via the pad. Forget its name though.

Couldn't be easier.. Welcome and good luck..
Thanks lads, I was thinking of rooting but the i've seen the instructions looks like it'll take forever.
UnrEVOked makes it really easy to root your desire. It's easiest on OS X or Linux. With Windows you have to uninstall HTC Sync (that's if you've installed it already), install a driver, then reinstall HTC Sync.
There's a Windows guide here (assuming that's what you use) - http://myhtcdesire.com/modding/how-to-root-your-desire-easily-method-2

Thanks a lot man definitley gonna go this and yeah i'm a windows user studied IT at college so bit of a passion.
Giving it a go but trying to do the drivers stage and my PC just isn't displaying the device in device manager what so ever.
Haha, welcome, I loved your post!
I made the move from a 3GS because I was highly disappointed in iOS 4 and the fact it still looks exactly the same since the first version in 2007 with no cusomisation at all, oh no wait, you can now change the wallpaper, yay! Not to mention very unhappy with Apple's handling of this entire antennagate nonsense...
Couldn't be happier on Android...

Just tried it but flashed to a Nexus One rom so no sense UI didn't really like it so unrooted will just wait for the update
Rooting using Unrevoked was as painless as it gets. Just read those instructions very carefully and you'll be done in 5 minutes. I've been on the fence for a long time (to root or not to root until this latest method came out because I wanted to be able to backup everything BEFORE installing a custom ROM).
As for the trackpad wake-up check my signature for a rock-solid ROM that includes everything you need.

Ah right and yeah might just give that ROM a little go.
Just go with a sense rom. There is plenty. Here are the one's i have liked if you decide to try again:
For android 2.1: mcr r3.1
Download: android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/307881/27-may-r3-1-modaco-custom-rom-for-htc-desire-with-online-kitchen/
For android 2.2(many improvements): Official Froyo HTC Sense ROM (not quite official though)
Download: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726300
I Personally use the 2.2 one and it is really as smooth as official, and everything is just fine. Also have oldstyle a2sd, which i prefer. But to solve the actual problem, here is the link to the wake on trackpad(and other buttons) mod
Download: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696907
Sorry for not making links clickable, but im not promoted to be able to do that.
So... I got completely screwed over. I didn't know about this new hboot that's screwing people who want to root their phones. The glass on my phone cracked badly, so I used my insurance to get a new EVO. I kept on trying to use unrevoked on the new phone, then finally searches the forums to see the bad news; made me want to punch a baby.
Anyways, since the original sense is killing a part of my soul, I'm going to switch back to my old phone for the ten day grace period before I'm required to send it to the insurance company.
I did notice one thing however... This new phone is running really smooth! So I'm wondering if the phone got its hardware updated, or was it just my old device getting worn, or is my build what made my phone slower than this new phone. Any thoughts?
My old phone is running cm7.0.3.1, the latest bfs savages Zen kernel. Dunno... This new phone just runs like a dream.
Agree completely. I was on mikg 2.4 when I cracked the screen on mine. Got a new one and have no issues with speed or battery life.
If it weren't for screenshots and free wireless tether, not sure that id be anxiously waiting root.

Well i was sitting back wondering how i got into rooting phones and decided to post this, How did you guys get into modding, rooting phones and when you started?
Well i got into this just before i got my tablet, which was a coby kryos, and it wasnt very good and didnt have the android market, so i did some research and found a website, and proceeded to do this thing called rooting. after it was all said and done, i thought i was done messing around with the phone, but then i find out about this other OS that is android but runs a little better than the stock rooted OS. Called Cyanogen mod 7. followed the instructions and it worked. so i took it further and rooted my phone i had at the time, the intercept. Thus this addiction was formed.
Everyday i would look to see if there was an update for my phone. or a updated version of cm7. Once i found out that there wasnt really a big community for either the kyros or the intercept i decided to go to a galaxy phone. took my sisters upgrade and got the E4gT. and since then its almost been smooth sailing for rooting, etc.
Now i am to the point where i want to start developing roms and what not, just have to get the courage to start such a big project.
How did you guys start with this? Whats your story? Keep us occupied while we wait for source and leaks.
Well I started all the way back from the sony psp days, I was super desperate to play final fantasy 7 and wasn't willing to buy my 3rd ps2 just to play it and the thought of it being portable and play it anywhere is too good to pass up, then learned how to start flashing custom firmwares for it, then moved to jailbreaking ipod touches(yes I had three) but jailbreaking is annoying, i actually had to go leaps and bounds just to make it do what android is capable of as stock(play any videos format, flash content, download anything online, etc) so just decided to buy my first android the galaxy s fascinate(redhead step child of the galaxy s line) and now here
i went to sprint and i had the choise to get a I-SUCK OR A galaxyi got a galaxy never like apples i saw videos on youtube of people modding the galaxy so i gave a try and here im learning
well for started i almost bricked my phone the first day lol tell how i came here and i went to the galaxy s2 forum not epic 4g touch.. lucky i figure it out that i was in the wrong forum and i came here and use sfhub one click l29 since i follow his instruction never had a problem again...
My first android phone was the HTC Hero. It got a couple updates and the last one sucked. It was horrible. Phone was super laggy and froze all the time. By then Gingerbread was out and Spirit said the phone would not run it. Did some research here on XDA and found people running GB who said the phone was much faster and more responsive. Did a bunch more reading to make sure I knew what I was doing and flashed a GB Rom. It was much better and had all kinds of new features.
Had to run the stock rom on this phone for awhile, but as soon as I found an easy way to root and mod it (thanks Sfhub), I flashed a custom Rom and never went back. I doubt if I will ever use a stock Rom again. I'll be getting a GS3 in September and there will be many great Rom choices by then. No doubt I will root it the day I buy it.This thread was a good idea. Thanks
How i started rooting phones, thank the htc touch pro for that. Ive used developers talents to modify 4 different platforms ;windows mobile palm, apple (ipad) and now my second android

Started hacking and cracking years ago. Mostly on PC's and Linux based machines. Then saw this thing called Android sweeping the market. Then saw the galaxy s. I had to have it. So I got the Mesmerize. I took a few days to familiarize myself with it. Then hit the web and found XDA. It was on froyo so I used z4root to root it. Then I started reading all the stuff I could do to it. With the help of some great devs and nice people I was flashing away. We had a lot of great devs for that phone. The Mesmerize and Fascinate was like brother and sister. We could swap kernels and such. And the fassy devs was nice enough to do things for the mes too. It was an awesome first phone. Then got this thing and love it. The devs here are nice and do great work. I miss some of the old devs but some of them show up in here from time to time. Times and sbrissen are some. I miss it JT1134 but heard he quite development cause he didn't have the time. Anyway. I love android and couldn't imagine a better hobby.

i think its a great hobby too. Even when im doing other hobbies, i seem to sneak away and go on premium and look around. i know theres flashaholics, well i think im more of a xdaholic.
and everytime i see people with android phones, i try to explain to them that they dont have full advantage of their phone, then i tell them to come here. most of them do some of them dont. This is a great community and the more the merrier. its always nice to be able to ask things about your phone with other people that have your phone. anyways continue...
I got into rooting devices during the Windows Phone days, with the HTC Touch Diamond. I remember the old days of roms kitchens and building roms, things will a little different back then.
I started with the original Samsung behold because I wanted free games and ever since then I can't stop lol

Ahh my HTC ppc 6700... Makes me feel old lol. Back when wm was the ****. I used to get stopped all the time by people asking me about my phone. And then when skyfire came out and we could watch flash videos. I use to show off.
Mightymike use to have the best roms. When he released roms his servers would crash. Nrg would come out with the latest and greatest for EVERY phone. Thats where sense started and always was memory hog. Back when xda was mainly a gsm website. Cdma people were all at ppcgeeks. I still see a few guys every now and then from ppcgeeks. Calkulins a legend. And ziggy, tsowen, santod with their themes. No2chem, conflipper, cmonex just to name a few. Lol
Sorry i was just reminiscing.

I used to have a Motorola hint. Always tried to play games, but no luck. Started learning about unlocking and got Motorola phone tools. I was able to fix my phone after I thought I killed it sideloading music onto my sd card. After that, me and my honey got Ascends, and I wanted to be able to fix my phone if I did something...stupid. read a bunch on rooting and one day, I took the plunge. I was a little apprehensive about voiding my warranty, but loved being rooted and Rom'ed. Got my Ascend 2 in December and rooted that. Then my buddy gave me his old HTC mytouch3g Fender edition. That was a beast to root, but I finally got it. Just waiting to save up for a better phone now...must mod!!! That's my story.

How I got into this
I've been reading about flashing and rooting ever since I got an evo 4g 2 yrs ago. Upgraded to the evo 3d and it came with a defective screen. I Ordered a Epic touch 4g to replace it and I got tired of all the b.s. about ics and decided to root. I can't believe I waited so long to do it. The bottom line is a week ago I flashed my 1st Rom using Odin one click, thank u qbking77, sfhub, sextape, chainfire , and everybody else who helped. Now I'm running cm9 nightlies after trying stock ff02 and ff11 and couldnt be happier. Im hooked. I rooted my girls evo earlier (s off and all) just to quench my thirst for a new rom to play with. I got a little to used to holding an evo again and accidently walked out the door with it on my way to work, lol. She's probably looking all over for the phone right now! Sorry honey. Hopefully she checks her email or fb on the PC ( cant call her) and sees my messages b4 she ends up tearing the house apart.
I have always been messing with everything electronic since I can remember. My dad worked on PC's so they where always around. I started really getting into phones with my Samsung a900 back in 05. I made a website on my home server that it could go to so I could side load apps and ring tones to it. Then I went on to WM and it just never stopped.
i had the HTC hero and wanted live wallpaper but i couldn't on stock so i rooted and ended up running cm7

Yeah I've been working on computers since I was a little kid. I remember helping my dad build his comp. When I was like 8. So I've been into computers for awhile. I've always tinkered with electronics since I was little. Pissed my dad off a number of times taking apart computers and frying the HDD (didn't know static=bad day for a HDD when I was that little). I moved on to software from there. All of it is self taught the hard way or from the magic of Google. Eventually I got a Blackberry and started flashing "hybrid" setups on them until Android came out. My first Android was the MyTouch 3G Slide. I learned a lot from that phone before I moved to a G2. Overclocking a phone to 2GHz+ was just insane It was like having a nuclear reactor in my pocket. Now here I am. I've progressed to being able to decompile apk's, do what I want, and recompile a working app. We'll see what the future holds.
Good luck to every other aspiring dev on here. Don't get discouraged by any complexity or any trolls on here. I promise you're probably over thinking most things and trolls are just trolls.
Mytouch 3g. HTC decided to skip the 2.1 update and make me wait longer for 2.2 I took matters into my own hands. Thought I messed up when it got stuck at the splash screen. Turns out I missed the gapps file.(used to have to flash it before cm). After that all my phones were rooted within 24 hrs. G2,Mt4g, g2x, nexus s, and now my et4g. Unofficialy updated the dell streak 7 to honeycomb. And am currently trying to convince the gf that I won't turn the transformer prime into a $500 brick.

Good Day,
I have the the original HTC Incredible with Verizon. I am by no means a power user, big on downloading video or surfing the web on my phone (unless it is a semi-emergency). The problem is that some of the apps from my bank, local weather, AAA, etc. have been updating their apps. Some will not load at all and other I cannot use some of the new features of the new versions. Because I have the OS that is out of date.
I stopped in to a Verizon store an asked if I could get a OS update on my phone and of course they wanted to sell me a new phone. Said it was impossible to update the Incredible to a new OS. After a little reading on the forum, it may be so. But I am asking just the same, can my phone have the OS updated at least to a semi-new Android OS?
I like the size of the Incredible and every time they want to try and have me get a new phone I say "Sure, just get me one that is the same size as my Incredible or possibly smaller." That has stopped them all in there tracks. I do not want to carry around a tablet on my hip. And for a little as I use other applications I could almost go back to a flip phone, just kidding, well maybe.
Thank you for any suggestions or comments on my little situation. Have a great day.

So, the Droid incredible was my first android device, and sadly no. That thing is long past it's shelf life man. The fact that you're running on 3G only is a wonder and testament to you NOT using your phone. As you said, you really COULD go back to a flip phone. I can't imagine many apps still work on Gingerbread.
I'm sure if the device is rooted and s-off you can install some roms that were made for the device that take it as far as it can go. I just found mine in a drawer and my kid wants it for listening to music. I'm on hear just to see what Roms are out there if anyone is still using it.
Hey I'll try to keep this short but that never works for me these days so look for the TLDR tags below for the main point paragraph:
Got an 960W right before the S10 launched and I had done no reseearch before hand so I thought root would be easy I had an S4 for ages until it got stolen and then a Moto G lte which I loved when rooted but the screen stays all black pixles with backlight now and a lot kft he screen is broken off plus getting old the original damage I had a stroke and broke it during the fall that caused it so I used a loaner iPhone 5 till I bought the S9.
I Googled and read root guides and went awesome and bought it not knowing that root is harder these days on most devices and I picked the worst model to even try or wait for I guess. Back then m brain wasn't able to research and think things through much better than today just read a few reviews and put my cash down.
So lately it's been running like crap draining the battery very fast and such especially after pie was released. I had looked into removing bloatware and stock crap from the start once I learned it can't be rooted but the stuff never caused an issue or bugged me other than when bixby assistant seems to come up for no reason.
That is until recently: I've noticed terrible battery life particularly with Bluetooth and adaptive brightness on and when I started looking into it a lot of the Samsung apps and packages I never use are what's hogging a big chunk of availavle battery and CPU time.
So I finally figured out how to run ADB over WiFi and disable packages but of course I learned how to uninstall too. Disabled everything with one of the "here's all tbe stock apps you can disable" articles and I even deleted a couple that seemed weird like samsung.bixby.dummy and such but once I did that it ran amazing... however
The however ended though quickly; since I realized factory stuff I do use like Samsung health and cloud didn't wanna work. So next I tried to just reinstall Samsung cloud via an apk downloaded and that didn't really work so I just wrote a little bat file to enable everything disabled via adb bridge and stuff is hunky dory the couple packages I did totally use uninstall command on havnt caused any issues they just throw a Java error when trying to enable them via adb since they are uninstalled. Things are good other than my gripes and accumulated crap as well as tbe first issue that things just arnt snappy anymore+battery drain.
Even reenabled it's running nice and slick again but I do wanna clean stuff up I have 1150 apps with the stock factory and carrier junk so I figure it's time for a clean up.
I figure though maybe it's time to do a factory reset and install the LS5 or 6 build whatever we are on now on American and Canadian devices and go fresh then see what its like until I have time to swap with someone local for a brighter more open device.
I did read about how just a few weeks ago someone wrote up and was on Android news sites about TWRP working on the snap s9 for doing some basic things just the bootloader is still locked of course so I figure I might as well do a backup with everything reenabled via Samsung cloud, Google drive backup, and backup everything I can get read access to vis USB with all the dev options enabled.
Then I can do a full wipe and format/factory reset and from there I can disable any bloatware and Samsung stuff that I don't need. From there if everything seems fine then restore all my misc data and reinstall the other non daily used apps I want and hope Google saves all their data. The phone should be just like the good ol days when you had to do. A. Factory reset instead of upgrade when a good rom update came out and it ran great at first till you loaded it up with crap.
//TLDR
So would this be my best bet, backup via Samsung Cloud, Google, GCloud Backup and a full drive over USB and probably ADB backup save too followed by a wipe format and then install the latest update from Android 8 or whatever I end up with after factory reset. Restore/reinstall apps I actually use or need and their data where possible and then disable any stock stuff I don't use or need make sure everything is fine for a week and then run the adb uninstall command.
Oooor is there something I haven't been able to think of or find with my brain issues that would make it much easier to disable or delete stuff slowly package by package as well as just clearing the OS up? I remember week 1 I was like damn modern phone's are amazing... Going from a Moto surnia to the sltev930 or whatever the s9 code is made me say wow modern handheld devices are amazing but it's lost its magic since learning I can't root,of course, and the limitations associated with that even with Nova launcher prime and shortcutter;even with a ton of stock packages disabled or uninstalled I'm sure.
I just miss being able to do what I want and maybe it's just me or my screen protector but the screen on this thing is weak: I can't read it outside during the daytime wheresas the old worn out iPhone 5 with years and years on it is very easy to see anywhere even with sunglasses and even with jailbreak removed and the beta 11.4.1 on it not 12 yet that little apple loaner can hold it's own.
//End TLDR
//Bonus points: trying to use app2sd most apps won't move and even manually it goes to 90 percent or so and hangs for ages then finally quits and still says internal storage.
Is this a known Samsung issue or is it a problem with fat32 formatting or is my cheap 250gb SD card probably only a 32gb and rewriting over itself after a point?
Not only can I not put many apps and their data onto the SD card but it's become corrupted two or three times now this year and I have to backup everything on my PC and then format on Android and start again.
I dont know how much all data and general files and pictures on the microSD card ive lost now and ice stopped trying for anything with any importance. I haven't done a ton of research but dont know if there's a way to do a specific type of formatting to make it more compatible or some system flag thing I'm missing or maybe just because it's a cheap micSD card... I paid less for it at 250gb than I did for 32gb m.2 SSD for my 3d printer.
//End bonus round back to you Trebek.
I'm thinking about doing research properly and selling or trading the S9 for one of the new cheap Google phones or another Moto or whatever else I find that has good specs and display etc just like the S9 was to me at first. Im not sure what the resale value on a perfect S9 snap is but I'm sure I can get something with a nice bright readable display decent battery and some of the trimmings like inductions charging as well as able to root and install lineage or whatever once I do the research.
I post mostly because I just wanna get some more use out of this thing until I get the time to trade this with someone local or same carrier and research what might match how I was running with the Moto surnia from 2016 till 2018 only with modern hardware.
I realize I don't need all tbe extra crap features of a top end phone these days now that I'm getting back to my MS Surface for general things and realizing that there's a lot I simply can't do on a locked up divice no matter the specs.
Opinions on the wipe-update-uninstallUnneededFactoryPckes vs just removing all unused apps and call it a day till I can find something to barter for a decide more my style now that I know more would be great, as would opinions on devices that might be s good idea to search for locally to trade for. It is on my list of things to research and do over the fall season.
So yeah, thoughts/comments/rants?
I know there's a bit of info on this stuff around just hard for me to do full reseearch these days not tk mention keep up with everything I mean it took me what over a year now just to finally figure out how to use adb to disable and remove factory stuff as well as if people have opinions on devices to research that are like say the s9 modern with the Moto surnia openness I'm all ears.
I'll leave it there for now needed to get this down here or Reddit and back in the S4 and Surnia days XDA never let me down.
Thanks.
Just found a coupe things out like uninstalled apps will reinstall and evabke when you update.
