Question about how dmverify handles host file modifications. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

Good Afternoon,
I've got a bit of a stupid question. If someone were to modify the system's host file, would dm-verify refuse to allow the device to boot or would it's forward error correction fix it?
I don't particularly care about knox ( I will never use samsung/google pay), although I doubt they would be monitoring the host file. Please tell me if I'm wrong though
Thank you. Sorry again for the stupid question but I came from the note 4 where dm-verify could be easily turned off. lol I'm debating on going back to it.

[ADVICE] How to avoid a hardbrick

Recently, i experienced the drama of having a hard bricked phone. Its a real headache, because you know that you wasted money into a useless brick, and if you send it to the assistence, you arent going have your cell phone for weeks, or even months. So, maybe you already heard those advices, but you need to make sure you never will never commit such an error.
Im not talking that root may damage your phone. If you do it right, it will not. But what can brick your phone is your attitude after root. Flash roms or kernels can brick your phone, but only using avast anti thief root options can not. Have this in mind.
1- NEVER (repeating, never) flash something that ISNT for your phone. It may be to the HNA-G7533339LS, but if you flash it on the HNA-G7533339 without those LS, you can get into touble. The firmware were for GT-S7500, but i flashed it in a GT-S7500L. Result: Brick
2- Dont think that if you have Clockworkmod backup or something like that, you cant brick anyway. If your bootloader gets corrupted, nothing will save you. Nothing. And you may corrupt it by flashing roms the wrong way.
3- Read the comments at the ROM that you are going flash, at less. Or make a search at Google. It may save your ass. Recently, lots of Galaxy S II owners had trouble with a leaked ICS kernel, and they bricked their phones, so read before doing ****.
4- I dont recommend flashing homemade custom roms or flashing untested ROMs, but someone needs to be the first. Only do this if you are really sure of what you are doing.
5- Asking dont hurts. If you are uncertain, ask. Its the best way to avoid problems.
6- For security reasons, always flash having a recently charged cell phone, seated on something, to avoid a falling smartphone. Also, if flashing throught ODIN, its preferable using a charged notebook.
7- Have a usb jig at your home. It may save you at some cases. You can buy one at www.dealextreme.com , or make your own.
8- And the last, after a hard brick, dont think your game is over. If you are under warranty, and your cell phone is truly bricked, send it to a assistance, and play dumb, like "I dont know what happened, but it turned off and isnt rebooting anyway". It isnt right to lie, but it may be necessary, for serious. Thay arent going cover a custom flashed phone. If it isnt under warranty, find someone with a riff box at your city. It may fix your phone.
I hope those advices can help you to avoid headaches. And know that Im not saying "dont flash roms". They may wonderfully boost your phone, and give it a new face. Only be sure of what you are doing Sorry by my bad english (it isnt my native language) , and bye!

Hey Thanks a lot for this.. I really needed this.. if it is possible then please help me with my doubts...
OK.. I will directly get to the point... I want to do "something" for my phone, the Galaxy S Advance... like create a custom Kernel or a ROM for this device... Now I'm a total "newbie" in all these.. so this will be my first time... now my question is: Which will be easier and SAFER to make; a custom ROM or a kernel?... Because I will obviously be the first one to try my own creation so like please tell me which one will be safer for me to try out? So that even if I do something wrong - I will still be able to fix it without spending any money on Repairing from shops...

If it's your first time and you don't know a lot about these, the safer(and easier) would be, for sure, trying to create a custom ROM. A kernel requires lots of knowledge, you need to compile things, code, make magic.... It's hard and dangerous, cause it's the bridge between firmware and hardware. If something go wrong, you are gonna have a bad time. But the rom creation process is much more easy, there are lots of tutorials, and if u know how to use Linux there is even a tool called dsxda kitchen(or something like that). The chances of bricking are smaller(but are still present) and it usually makes the device better.
So, if u are really need it, first get experience creating a ROM. Only think about kernels later.
Hope I helped, and good luck

Useful video for newbies
I've uploaded one video on YouTube last January, that should help beginners what to do, as well as read in the text step by step and translate it (many people who visit this forum don't understand very well english, so they can copy&paste it into their translators). Here is the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NXBN9Z63TY
Last January I've read in different forums that many people had issues with "E: signature verification failed" even after successful root, as sometimes they just rooted but didn't have CWM recovery yet.
There were no good explainations how to solve it so I did that video, on the example of Samsung Tab 2 GT-P5110.
The video has helped many people, meanwhile it's clicked nearly 50K times....
Cheers!
My Micromax Bolt Q370 doesn't have any custom recovery available. But I am rooted, Xposed Installed. (Installed using terminal), Dolby Atmos installed (Installed through Flashfire).
Yeah, but I soft bricked it many times (6 times) and have to fix it in service centre.
Now I know what's healthy for my phone, and what bricks my phone. Now I'm stopped playing with root apps, until somebody make a custom recovery for my phone.

how to permanent disable all data connections from galaxy s4 phone

I’m new to this forum, and I’m new to android, with the minimum knowledge in developing or modifying anything in an android phone. So, I’m asking if someone has solution on my issue, should he please explain it with all the details.
I just bought 3 phones, SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 MINI VERIZON SCH-I435 - ANDROID VERSION IS 4.4.2 [maybe just 1 that I selected on the phone to update the software, and the others (I still didn’t opened it also no line on it) are maybe 4.2]; I need it for 3 employees that I want to use it with a specific program for my business that it not needed to be updated continuously, and its suppose to getting updated daily with a direct USB connection to our server.
My issue is, that for many reasons I want that the internet and any type of data connection should be fully disabled, no browser, no e-mail, no data apps, no in apps purchases, no MMS messaging, and also no video. Just Talk & Text and. So I’m wondering if it’s possible on an android phone to disable all data apps and block all data connections, in a way that it shouldn’t be able to restore it back.
Before I came here, someone told me that I can do it if I first root the phone (he also didn’t know what I need to do after rooting) he gave me to try a few programs to root the phone, Super User, TowelRoot, Kingo ROOT ,Super SU but as I see nothing worked for my phone. The SuperSU gives a message that it cannot find the SU binary, and the others don’t work for other reasons – I tried to search somewhat on the internet about this kind of problems with rooting this model phone, and I found some complicated guidance with a combination of a few downloads, what I even didn’t understand the instructions how to do it, and I’m also definitely afraid of damaging the phone, and maybe after all it will still not work for me to root the phone – and the main thing is that my goal is not rooting the phone, but to totally disable any internet and data connections from this phones.
So I’m asking if someone can please give me a step by step solution for this kind of modification on this model phones, to permanent disable all data connection from the phone, and if 1 of the steps is to root the phone, then I also need detailed information from someone who has the experience with rooting this model phone with this android version.
I will appreciate everyone’s time and effort to help me.
Thanks
P.S. if my issue can only be solved by a paid android developer, maybe… I’m willing to pay some amount to do this. So if u see this for the only solution, then please direct me to a reliable developer. depends on price, experience, and more, to decide if willing to pay

Hello, i think to achive this someone have to create a modified rom(maybe based on samsung's stock or even cyanogenMod). I dont think its pretty difficult, but i dont have the wright knowledge to accomplish this.
But i can help you for rooting the phones. S4 mini s running 4.4.2(lets call it v1). But samsung pushed an update again on 4.4.2 after some months(call it v2).The v1 is easy to update with towelroot.
But the v2's kernel cant be rooted with that way. I follow some instructions from a post here on xda and i rooted mine. If you are on v2 you have to flash v1's kernel with odin, root it and then flash the v2's kernel. That's the way i did to my phone and i successfully root it.
You can download from sammobile all the stuff you need(kernels). I think it will gonna work for you too. To check if you are on the old(v1) or on the new(v2) rom, try towelroot and if it fails you are on v2, else on v1.
Thanks.
First, how do i get such kind modified rom?
second, about rooting. I tried already Towelroot and its not working, so maybe this means that i have already the update that you call V2. how could i know if i have V1 or V2?
also can you please explain me in detail your solution. Sory Im a novice in the android language. what "odin"?, how do i get it, how do i use it?, what means flash? how do i flash v1's kernel? and how do i flash V2's kernel?
Thanks again

About the 'modified rom' you have to wait for a response from someone with the knowledge to do this. There is no reason talking about root from now.
You can pm some developers and ask for help.
Maybe try something like LBE Security think you can deny access to things like that and maybe have a master app password. Maybe try looking under Android development forum under software or general. You may get a better response to your question, as it's pretty much just a device topic here. But I would think on Android such things should be possible.

[G975U] DISCUSSION on Root/BL Unlock

Hello!
I just picked up a SM-G975U to play with.
Before you get your hopes up, Root and BL Unlock is NOT POSSIBLE on USA variants at this time!
I created this discussion so those willing and able can brainstorm with me with hopes of achieving root or unlock.
Now I wouldnt be creating this thread if I didnt think it was possible or without some form of teasers.
Dont ask me how but flashing combo is possible. I cannot and will not share the method/files as they are not mine to do so.
I noticed on combo this time around if you toggle oem unlock there is a tag that says "OEM Unlocked" when you enter download mode. When you long press vol up it also takes you to the unlock screen. After pressing vol up to accept it reboots and wipes data.
I am not sure the steps after this but so far havent been successful in flashing modified firmware. It is possible this is just a visual but I feel this is closer than any past devices ive owned. Anyone with know how on where the flash lock bit is stored would be of great help.
I should be able to flash some partitions after modifying them such as vbmeta or dtbo etc. to hopefully unlock the BL if I only knew what to modify.
This is not a how-to or dev thread so dont expect me to share any files. It is merely to discuss how the BL is unlocked on SD S10 devices to hopefully lead to an unlock down the road.
To my understanding, toggling the oem unlock sets a bit that tells the system that oem unlocking is allowed as well as disables security such as frp. This persists across reboots and firmware flashes etc.
After that, in DL mode there is a tag that also says device is oem unlocked. At this point you need to actually hold vol up to actually oem unlock the device.
After this I am unclear. We should be able to flash custom firmware at which verified boot state will be orange and the flash lock bit is 0. In my case, verified state is still green and flash lock is still 1 and flashes fail unless officially signed.
I know the dtbo is related to verity and vbmeta to verified boot. Vaultkeeeper to rlc. Then you have metadata, a few "keys" related partitions etc etc.
What is everyones take on this? Any ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated in advance!
some screens
Welcome aboard! Appreciate all your work from the Note9! Kudos
Hey OP I know you from somewhere.... epic touch 4g forums?? I cant remember what device you had but anyways great to see you here. You think maybe chatting with the people that got root on enoxy may point you in the right direction. I know its enoxy and we got SD which is different but maybe a shot?*

haha I did own an epic 4g touch back in the day.. was more lurking way back then but who knows lol
for an update, no luck yet lol. been messin with combo on g975u but no easy way in yet. I have managed to change some stuff on efs and other partitions.
the binary checks sammy implemented starting in the s9 devices sucks.
I am still looking though.
i now have uid 1000 access.. with how selinux contexts and ownership is in pie tho i can only access stuff that is mounted rw and system user/group which so far is cache, carrier, efs, data, qdmdbg and various files spread throughout.
dev block wise i can access persistent, and steady partitions.. other than that i can write to the ones that are already mounted.
uid 1000 is a step in the right direction tho... beats shell 2000 uid
not to mention the method for uid 1000 should be there on any sammy device with combo firmware lol
Hi is there anything i can do to help at all cause if so i am willing i have found some stuff online as well posted it in a different post but can share it here if u are interested
I am definitely interested in learning more and being a part of this convo fellas! I have been in the Bus for at least 8 years now and want to learn the next step which is how to navigate around the S10 S10+ Security Features. Anyone mind showing me a few ropes please?

This is similar to the techniques used to write imei on cpid phones. Can you share the scripts? You use for temp root.

There is no scripts lol. I can't share the method or files to get to combo.
An update however, I noticed with system prices you can access the efs folder.
I found a way to pass kernel cmdline to the bootloader to set ro props.
I am still messing with it and need an rma as I messed up my efs and can't get cell service now lol

Who knows lol. Similar to N9 seems like I'm only one working on it lol
Currently stuck In a boot loop as i found a exploit for kernel cmdline injection and set ro.secure=0 which it didn't like. I didn't read the info sammy posted on new securities on s10 lineup around additional security around RKP and Knox Verified Boot. It is not the same as say pixel devices as they added onto it
I was told in the other thread that what i had found was more than likely BS but if u still what the link i can give it also am still willing to use my phone as some help if u need it
Edit: switching phone sry guys but keep workin hard i will keep looking for new s10 + finds even though i wont have it and ill keep u updated with whatever i find
Try and flash G97500 I know on older devices it would boot if you used flash fire not sure if you can dd it or not Odin probably wont like it but worth a try just make a system tar and flash it but you would also need that combo firmware.
I'm rockin' the s10+ (am g975u)....
I want root!
I will make pwmage!
Stay tuned!

Since you have UID 1000 access, wouldn't you be able to dump the partitions off the phone?
If so, why not dump each of the writable partitions and then compare checksums/bits before and after doing the unlock?
I have the g975u and am willing to help however

Clarification on what triggers Knox on the S9 SM-G960F?

Ok, first of all I've been member here since Galaxy S1 days, so I'm not a n00b as such, however I've done pretty much no modifications to my Galaxy S9 international.
Because I've been "out of the mobile development" scene for quite some time, I understand the the progression that Samsung has been continuing with trying to secure Samsung devices? So it would be very naive of me to assume that the boundaries are the same as when I had my Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S3?
Now I understand people are going to say use the search function bla bla blah, but I've not been able to find the specifics for what I'm trying to achieve?
This brings me my exact point of what I'm trying to achieve:
First point is Facebook is embedded with in the system with Signature checking FFS! Damn you Zuckerberg!
Is it possible to decompile the system image and swap out the Facebook app for Facebook LC or even no Facebook at all?
Is it only having the SU binary that triggers Knox or is it because the flash files are not signed by Samsung? As in the 4 part firmware BL, AP, CSC etc?
The other thing I wanted to change would be the boot animation QMG file. I know how to create a new and compatible QMG for my S9 no worries.
Is there a hash file checking all the internal files of the software against their listed signatures?
I know within the settings APK that there are also signature checking against flip fonts that are signed by Mono so understand that some checks are deeply embedded in some places; that doesn't worry me. I'm quite happy to not run root but curious to know what Odin checks when flashing and what things will actually trigger Knox?
Are we able to modify files and replace them back into the system image of the firmware, and re-sign these with .md5 and be able to flash the firmware without triggering Knox?
If someone could enlighten me of the specifics of Knox and flashing on the Galaxy S9, that would be great ?

If you flash custom ROM, that should trigger the knox. If you get an official firmware and flash using Odin, knox is happy

No need to talk down to somebody, he may be genuinely trying to help.
That said, all the questions you are asking have been answered in various threads, I suggest searching in the future. If you flash anything that isn't signed by Samsung you will trip Knox. You can make the modifications you suggested to get rid of Facebook and anything else, but since you don't have the Samsung keys, once you flash it, you will trip Knox. There was some discussion that simply enabling the OEM unlock would trip Knox, but I haven't been able to verify that since mine is already tripped.
You can however use ADB commands to disable packages installed on your phone but once you update your phone they will be reenabled and you will have to run the ADB commands again. This may be a roundabout way of doing what you're trying to accomplish. Hopefully this is helpful.

flashing a custom recovery triggers knox and its irreversible. flashing an official firmware will not reset the knox counter nor will it make the phone believe that knox isnt tripped

enabling OEM unlock will not trip knox. personally verified on my A8. painstakingly went thru each step really slowly and deliberately to check that stuff out. XDA folks are posting more and more specific questions nowadays lol

Unrooting S20 Plus

Hi all
Hope this is the correct area...
My hubby bought me a S20 plus for my birthday through a local dealer.
I noticed a few issues like not being able to use biometrics or install certain apps.
I've since found out the phone has been rooted.
I've tried to do a factory reset, but this hasn't helped.
I've downloaded root checker and it confirms the phone is rooted. I've downloaded SuperSU yet is won't work as ver 2.82 claims it's for an older Version of Android.
I've downloaded solid explorer to delete the root access files such as Busybox and SU however I cannot find these files in the system folder or the system/bin folder.
Can anyone advise on how I can unroot my phone? I am unable to install certain needed apps due to this.
Phone details below. Sorry am unable to upload pics.
UI Version = 1
Android Version = 10
Let me know if other info is needed.
I've even tried calling the Samsung Center and they are unable to assist...
Thanks all
Lee

Thanks all
Lee

You will need to get hold of the stock firmware from somewhere like Sammobile and flash back to stock using ODIN. There's tons of guides knocking about on here for the step by step. The damage is done though as far as any Knox related features go, it's like a fuse that blows when you root and you can never fix that.
Having said that, biometrics should have never been affected by rooting so that's a bit unusual. Flash stock and set up from scratch then go from there, could be faulty also
Thanks for the guidance Dave. I'll search the forums for the steps.
For clarity, when I say biometrics didn't work, it works allow me to record etc, but when I tried to enable it, like on my banking app, it wouldn't allow me. This is how I eventually figured out my phone was rooted. While I know the benefits of being rooted, a normal everyday user like myself, certainly won't benefit from it.
I've had a Samsung my entire life, and always saw the secured by knox logo... When you say damage has been done, does this mean that all my security in the device, such as my banking details etc, may be compromised?
Jees. I hope not. As this would really freak me out...
Ok so Finding the firmware wasn't to difficult. Sanmobile quite easy to navigate.
Just a query please... My phone base band version lists g985fxxu1atb2 however the closest I could find to this is G985FXXU1ATBM
Is this ok or does it have to be the exact same description?
Shoo. Lol. Really hope I'm going to be able to get this right **insert nervous smile emoticon here**

The last letters are the region/operator of the Rom. Not necessarily has to be the exact description, the really important are the first that indicate model number.
Ok. So have downloaded Odin and am busy downloading the flash firmware.
May I please be so bold as to ask someone on here to please share a link tot he step by step guide that I will need to follow in order to flash my phone back to the original boot thingie :silly::silly::silly:
I have tried to search but seem to only come up with a nexus thread with no mention of Odin.
~Sorry to ask, but little overwhelmed LOL and want to make sure I do this properly and not screw up my phone.
REAL noob here, so apologies if I come across lazy and getting others to do the work, but am really grateful for the help.
Maybe I'm searching incorrectly???
I found this somehow....
Is this it?

**fingers crossed**
Can you unlock your phone with biometrics? Im guessing only the banking apps don't work because it's rooted. If i remember correctly most banking apps and maybe Google pay(not sure about that) stop working after rooting because the phone is "compromised" and it's not safe. You have to hide your root status from these apps and they will work properly then. Maybe someone else can help you with that because i do not remember how to do it.
Hi Marto
Yes, biometrics does work, although not really good. But that's probably due to the hectic screen protector.
Correctly so, it's mostly the banking / payment apps that won't work, and I can't check or download any software updates... Although I belive this can also be done manually....
But wow, there's an app that hides the root status? That might be a whole lot easier than re flashing. Truthfully I'm Sh!tting myself at the thought of attempting this ????

if the phone was bought as new, go back to the dealer and demand a new one that is not rooted.
could also be that your husband rooted the phone and installed software that keep tabs on what you do.
