hi everyone, i just lost my rooted evo, but i dont have any software like mobile defense or anything similar....
i thought i could track it through latitude but i never enabled it in my gmaps...
any one have any help with this ??
I've never used it but check out plan b by lookout labs. It's supposedly designed just for this purpose. BTW, if it works please reply as I want to know if it does work as it says.
Install through the web android market.

I think most, if not all, of those types of apps must be setup before you lose the phone.
That's what I thought but this one specifically says it can be installed once a phone is lost through the market and it will run as soon as the app is pushed through to your phone by google. Of course it could all be pr speak which is why I want to know if it works for the op.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Actually, now that you mention it, that could work. I wasn't thinking that you could use the Android Web Market to silently push the app to the phone. Since it silently installs such apps without prompting for confirmation of either the install or its permissions, it probably would work. They would see it install in the notification bar, but might not notice before you got the location info you need.
Of course, this is a great example of why I think that's a security flaw in the Android web market. If someone compromises your Google account, they can push an app down to your phone via the web market and you might not know. Basically such an app could do anything short of something requiring root access with no prompt showing up. I've always thought that despite it being convenient the way it is (review the permissions on the web and have it automatically install), it'd be much more secure to confirm install on the phone first. That said, in this one scenario, it could actually be helpful.
thanks for the help!
i installed/pushed the app through the market but still waiting to get an email.... ill try texting with my friends mobile to see if its still on.
o wow...hopefully it is still on and that app works!! good luck to ya!!
So I have to know. Did it work?

Anyone else use this? I used it a while back for my N1, tested the remote auto-enable GPS, siren, lock, etc and they all seemed to work great. Haven't used it since though and just decided to fire it up and get it set up on my GNexus.
Think it's worth using or just a waste of time?

I just dumped my Avast! and got Cerberus set up now. Thanks for the input. I've heard a lot of good things about Cerberus, and wasn't too sure about Avast!

I also just signed up with Cerberus. Thanks everybody!
I just "Attempted" to sign up with Cerberus last night. Paid for the app through Google Play, still haven't activated my device, and nobody is answering my e-mail to let me know what is going on. We'll see how it goes.
I've never in my life lost a phone, or misplaced it for that matter. I just figured, with Avast! being free, "why not?" have a safety net in case I lose it.
Set it up with my wife's phone as the "trusted" number so if it gets lost, I can track it
Cerebus is probably better but I don't see the need to pay for something like this, personally.

I've worked inIT for years and one thing i noticed with virus removals. They came in by the bunches with eset, macafee (sp) Norton, etc all paid subscriptions. The least infected computers I've seen were all running avast free. My personal laptop has never been infected. Recent, avast on my phone picked up malware code not only in an app i downloaded from the play store (koi pond live wallpaper) but it also noticed the same app/malware in my mybackuproot compressed back up of the app.

I can also vouch for Cerberus! Just make sure you don't restore it through titanium, it causes problems
My apologies for gravedigging, but...
I have avast installed currently. Has anyone actully used either of these to recover a stolen phone?

I applaud you for finding a relevant thread to post in. I have used rooted avast to find a lost phone. I left it at work derp.

I use Cerberus as well as Avast. Cerberus anti-theft is much easier to re-enable after flashing a new ROM, so I just turn that feature off in Avast. There doesn't seem to be much virus activity in the Android sphere yet, but Avast has a nice firewall, permissions snooper, and some other things. Saves me from having to install a few separate apps that cover the same territory.
Haven't lost my phone yet, but I've seen posts by people who have recovered their phones using Avast, and others using Cerberus.
hi all
not sure if this is the right thread, but i also installed the avast anti-theft on my note 10.1 and my wife's note 1.
the problem is that i already un-installed the avast program. using the application manager, also using the titanium backup to remove it.
apparently it is still there. i just recieved an sms from my wife's phone that a new sim was inserted and all, but she informed me she just turned off her phone. no sim was removed or anything.
now this would just be irritating if we are in the same country, but right now she is using her roaming number and that number is sending back these messages to me.
is there any other solution to totally removing that notification? i am worried that when i follow her there also and have my sim be on roaming, my Note 10.1 would also be sending these messages everytime I turn off my phone or remove my sim.
any help would greatly be appreciated, as this has been already going for 2 weeks now. i am afraid to look at the bill on her mobile number.
thanks guys.
sorry for the long post.

You may need to check settings/security/device administration and see if avast is still there. Avast hides a secondary app to prevent someone from simply uninstalling the app if stolen and you'll have to disable the administration option to truly uninstall it.

So I know AT&T, being the disgusting American capitalist corporation that they are, decided to completely disable wireless tethering and make you pay for it with a monthly fee on your bill. This is completely unacceptable if you ask me.
This is a thread to see what Wi-Fi tethering apps you guys are using, with and without root. Hopefully we can get a list going so people can try out some different ones if certain ones don't work for them.
I'm using a completely stock phone, unrooted. Just downloaded FoxFi from their website, and installed the apk on my phone. It's usually available on Google Play but AT&T decided to block it. However, I can confirm that if you download the APK and install it that Wi-Fi tethering works perfectly. I connected my work laptop to my phone just now and used dropbox for a bit, and I also tried a few different websites.
Elixir 2
Foxfi here. It works great on my unrooted phone.

When I used to tether with an Iphone att noticed it right away and sent me automated messages... Can they also detect tethering with Android??
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
if you download an app, the only thing AT&T would be able to see is your data usage. if your data usage all of sudden goes up, that's usually related to tethering.
i use FoxFi on my unrooted Galaxy S3.

definitely not true.
they can tell by the number of 'hops' that data traffic goes through to the end client. that is how they found me. i was using CM9 (built-in enabled hotspot) for 3 months on my old phone and they finally sent me the "Did you know tethering requires a plan?" text, and sent me a letter telling me I had to stop before X date or they'd change my data plan. when I called in playing dumb they listed off a number of apps that i might have used 'accidentally', which was the list of all the tethering apps i've heard of, and asked if i used them.
IMHO, the only safe way to tether via wifi on an unrooted phone would be to set up ADB via wifi, then use Easytether over that wifi ADB connection. Anything that resembles straightforward "phone as transparent access point" is too easy for carriers to detect. You have to masquerade your traffic, and the more opaque you can make it (say, by further tunneling it over a PPTP or L2TP VPN), the better.
A rooted phone has a few additional possibilities, but they involve completely replacing the tethering app that's bundled with the phone with one that goes out of its way to masquerade your traffic and disguise its wifi-routed origins.
You can also change over to a mobileshare plan. It's saving me a few bucks per month, and tethering is allowed with no additional fee.
"Tethering and/or mobile hotspot use is permitted with Mobile Share plans with capable Designated Devices; provided, however, that such use is limited to a maximum of five (5) simultaneous users per Device." "If you use a tethering and/or mobile hotspot Device with more than five (5) simultaneous users, you agree that AT&T may suspend or terminate service to the account."
So it looks like they're watching for multiple receivers in the traffic and if they see more than 6 (the device itself and 5 attached clients), then it flags.

Foxfi worked perfectly for me up until this latest OTA update and now it won't work at all. Was using Power Toggles to activate it, but this is no longer working. I've been searching for a working replacement for the last few days without any luck so if anyone has found an app that works after the update I would greatly appreciate you sharing the name. Thanks!!
I use wifi tether on a rooted S3. It works pretty well. It has similar options to that of a router.

He was using the built in tethering feature of CM9, which is also part of stock Android.
I use wifi tether. It was the only thing that let me connect to my vpn and tether at the same time.
Haven't used it very much tbh. Maybe 2 hours total in the past couple of weeks. But so far so good
I don't think att would have an idea I was tethering since all the data is going through my vpn and is encrypted.
If they somehow managed to find out, I'm prepared to take them to court and will ask for proof in discovery which would make everything public as far as how they caught me.

Hello all,
I have been using this tethering method for a few weeks now, but all of sudden, my phone gets stuck on "Please wait while verifying..." message. It never errors, and I can cancel the process. I have tried to restore the offical tethering files, in hope to get the "Please call blah blah for more information message, but the same result happens too. My phone did recently download a system update, but I haven't allowed it to install. If anyone can shed some light on this I would greatly appreciate it.

I did the update earlier - Still no go.
I've been running MM for about 15 hours now with no issues. Have not tried Android pay yet, but everything else works without any discernible problems. In fact: Android wear works better now than it did before; whereas on 5.1 it would constantly disconnect, now it doesn't even have a single problem.
Android Pay is no go here also.
Samsung Pay seems to be working.
With new loyalty cards feature added... it's not officially time to ditch Android Pay. It was disappointing since the day they launched
Neither Android nor Samsung pay support my bank but my experience with MM so far has been great. It feels like a brand new phone.
i have been running it for about 30 hours and have not had any major issue. the only minor issue I see is in the messaging app. if you hit the back button to exit out of a conversation and go back to you message list, it exits out of the messaging app all together. other than that, my phone is running twice as fast as it was before. my Bluetooth issues seem to be better as well.
After updating to Marshmallow, I can't seem to have my text messages preview on my status bar; that is, I do not see any words besides the little text icon. Is anyway else having this problem? I have ENABLED "MESSAGE PREVIEW" in the settings within the app, but still no go. Maybe I used package disable pro, disabling an app that interferes with it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
Just tested Android and Samsung Pay. Both worked for me.
The only thing I may have done different was I shutdown my device. Entered recovery(power+home+volume up) and cleared my cache.
When I rebooted my cellular data connected to 4G instead of Edge and it detected new updates for the bloatware lol. Worth a try if you need Android Pay.
Just tried a few minutes of movie in Prime Videos and no issues here, Android Wear stayed connected too.

Yep, now that loyalty cards are in Samsung pay, I can now disable Android Pay completely. I have to say Samsung knocked it out of the park with their reverse engineering magnetic strips to allow our phones to work with the older technology.

Hey Guys,
I'm having a really big problem. Last week I was in LA for Some Music Business and I ended up meeting a lot of people in the Industry and getting their contact, exchanging messages, etc.. My Note 7 never got the 'Brick' update as I used package disabler to disable incoming updates so I've been using this exact phone for all my mobile contact needs.
Just Yesterday I received my Galaxy S8+ and All morning I've been attempting to backup my Note 7 and restore them on my new Galaxy S8+ and nothing is working. I've Tried Smart Switch (Multiple, multiple times), Smart Switch software via Mac, Backing up through Samsung Cloud, Backing Up through 3rd party 'Switch' apps, switching through Wifi, and nothing works.
The issues I have:
- Samsung Smart Switch: On my S8+ it opens and works fine. My Note 7 opens smart switch for 3 seconds and closes.
- Samsung Smart Switch Via Mac OS: It Stays stuck at the backup phase.
- Samsung Cloud Backup: It literally does nothing (as if I didn't even tap the screen)
- 3rd Party Switch Apps: Works on S8+ but Stays Stuck on Note 7 before even beginning the switch process.
I sincerely ask for some help. I've been sitting here in my home for the past 2 1/2 hours getting a headache from this and I want to get out and enjoy the day ( I live in Minnesota and its 70 Degrees today)

I just followed every instruction except the uninstall Package Disabler. It definitely changed things up. I can now open Smart Switch on my Note 7 and have it stay open. The issue now is it stays stuck at transferring. The transfer says it shouldn't be more than 9 minutes but 15 mins in it still shows that its at 0%. Could It be that I have an older version of Smart Switch?

Thing is disabling apps on my Note 7 does not allow me to re-enable them. I've had it happen to Instagram and Facebook. I also have no idea. It for some odd reason is messing with me every way it can.
I been doing the Smart Switch via the USB, so should I try it over Wi-Fi? (I thought I wanted to have Wi-Fi disabled)

I actually think I realized what the issue is. When I blocked the OTA and UFW updates I also had Package Disabler Pro disable all Bloatware. I now see that it disabled some packages that are needed for the transfer (And it also resolves and gives me an answer to my Instagram, FaceBook issue). Thing is I've been trying for the past 20 minutes to enable them (It says they are enabled but when I check they still are disabled).
Is it safe for me to uninstall package disabler pro? Wouldn't it have Samsung Push me a force update right away?

The problem with any Package Disabler app out there Sumsung pulled licenses for N7 and for that reason they stoped working in full but they still block the packages. It will be safe to uninstall it unless you haven't have pending OTA update and your phone on WiFi or data.

Thank you very much for your time and help WaterPass!!! And to all the others that commented!
I was able to figure out that the issue was that there was necessary packages that were disabled upon having disabled auto updates. This is the fix, to everyone that is interested! I hope this saves you 6 Hours
