Screen Banding / Gradient Issues - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

I have a question about note 10 plus (Exynos) display, I immediately saw that something is wrong when opened a Spotify (please see attached images) earlier I had iPhone XS Max and the gradients were fluid, also I Can see the gradient banding in some scenarios like grey scale or some of the colors.
Can someone tell me if the display if faulty or not? Do someone with note 10 plus and spotify can for example check that song/background on their device?
IMAGES - please add https:// before link below since I can't add images to the thread the XDA posting is lame..

Sorry for the quality of photos but I made them with old nexus 4

Same on my device.

This thing about banding, I have seen it in some other devices, and not always, with my note10+, I have only seen it in some wallpapers, but never in an app, as youtube netflix clarovideo, games, browser, videoplayer, etc

[Q] Video playback on GN (compared to the Note)

There's a thread over in the Note section about poor black rendering in some videos. Could someone try out the sample on the Nexus and see if that too shows the same artifacts? The clip is here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?53da859r2gu8b8q,p4zi4js5g42uxu4
Trying to determine if this is specific to the Note, the screen, or possibly poor software/codec rendering...
* Bump *
I havent seen any other discussion about this based on the search terms I've used and some people said that the Nexus also suffers from the same issue.
Can anyone perform some testing ?
http://www.mediafire.com/?qd2a1d8jm18vvbs
Use the stock player (HW acceleration mode)
Set the screen brightness on the player to lowest
View in a dark room to avoid any distraction from reflections, viewing this with ambient light actually makes it less problematic.

I've downloaded video from first post but video player refuses to play it, sorry. But i was able to play above posted .mkv file and yes, picture looks pretty bad in very dark areas. I don't think we can change anything, that's how our SAMOLED works.

Thanks for trying the video above, other SAMOLED devices display it video w/o any issues.. Like the Samsung Wave , Galaxay S1 and Galaxy S2.
What bothers me though is that on some Galaxy Note's with the very same settings and scenario above it has far lesser issues.
Im actually surprised this is not covered on the Galaxy Nexus sub forums, maybe no one watches HD movies on a 4.65" screen ?
More feedback from users would be nice so samsung can take a look at this issue.
I have seen this on several videos. I thought it was because of codec but realized did not happen on any other device i had.

Android 4.0 does not have native .mkv support like TW devices. It has the ability to hardware decode because the OMAP4460 chipset can decode it but after the update to 4.0.2 divx support was removed for some reason.
4.0.2 changelog:
Device features
Optimized Mobile Hotspot when used with VPN.
Optimized 3G/4G data sessions for faster response times.
Fixed an incorrect notification that “data was disconnected due to roaming”.
Wi-Fi now automatically reconnects when returning to a known Access Point.
Improvements to special visual effects feature when using front-facing camcorder.
Visual improvements to the lock screen.
Email & messaging
Fixed an issue where some email attachments would not open correctly.
Apps & Widgets
DivX support has been removed, and will be supported in a future upgrade.
Improved audio volume in Google navigation turn-by-turn directions.
Try it with mVideo or Dice player, it should work.
Any of the many good video players should work.
MX Video Player even has dual-core support...
I've definitely noticed this about the Nexus screen. I don't know if it's as bad as the Note or not, but I started a couple of huge threads on android forums (some reference the Note thread, so there may be a circular reference thing going on ):
http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...ing-effect-nexus-other-hd-amoled-screens.html
http://androidforums.com/verizon-ga...ifacts-black-areas-during-video-playback.html
I would love to know if there are any workarounds or if supercurio will be able to help the Nexus owners similar to what he's doing for the Note.

[Q] Low display quality

Hi guys,
I have my Xperia Z1 Compact. The smartphone is advertised(and reviewed!) as having very good display quality. However I cannot agree with that. My previous phone was Iphone 4s(so 2-3 years older smartphone) and while I really loved android as a system(it has its drawbacks though) I can't say that I loved sony's display. The quality is low. I can't even call it average. Much worse than Iphone 4s' display. There are four main problems that I noticed:
1) Unrealistic colours - the most annoying problem. Tanned skin look orange or red so any photos from beach will look like basket with tomatos. Just check the picture on polish wikipedia of politician 'Janusz Palikot' and see the difference.
2) Any details completely missed in a shadow. Just watch the beggining of the video on youtube called "7. bronn the commander"
and see difference between Z1compact and 4s(or your computer):
3) viewed images quality in applications like facebook are much lower than in real(or on Iphone). When I view a picture in facebook it seem to be less sharp than if I download the picture on computer, send it to e-mail and then download it from my e-mail to smartphone,
4) When i check gamma in app called "display tester" (option: gamma detection) the result is 1.4 while i read that it should have been 2.2. What's the reason?
What's the reason of those drawbacks(the third one is the least annoying but still) and how can I fix it? Is there any way to calibrate it(someone did that?) I use app "screen adjuster" but it's solve problems only partially and it's heals only symptoms not causes.
BTW White balance DOESN'T help.
PS. Sorry that I don't post the exact links but I am not allowed to I am attaching photos anyway
my dispaly is fine. It looks same on all Z1c's. Check the pictures I attached yourself. How is that possible that smartphone advertised as having top quality display works like this and cannot even display human skin properly? Iphone 4s i almost 3 years older but the display is FAR above sony's.
Anyway is there anything I can do to fix it?

Tab S Low Quality Screen

Hi everyone
i bought tab s 10.5 a yesterday and i uploaded a few pics and videos from my pc to it
and beside the images and the video that comes with the device (that look amazing by the way) , pics and videos that i put doesn't seem good, they looked better on my 1080p pc screen
they seem to lack wide spectrum of colors, like they are an 8-bit images or look like when your graphics driver on your pc is ruined
it would seem that my files are s h i t but they look really good on pc
is there like a switch or a mode that i can flip to make it right?
Can you upload a screenshot? You might have copied a thumbnail or something check which resolution the picture has.

[Q] PIxelisation problem on dark/black scene while streaming

Hi! I've got some serious pixelisation/artifact problem when i stream to netflix or youtube.
The problem seems to be related at the black color. Most of the time when there is a dark scene or some black element in a scene i will see some kind of pixel/artifact. I took a screenshot of a scene in a godzilla trailer but ... For some reason it look good while on my tablet its not.
On the picture attached on the left building most of the left side in the black area is pixelated on my tablet (i dont know why its not on the screenshot)
I tried to turn off the adaptive display while whatching videos but... it doesnt help. I also tried different streaming option (auto, low, med, high resolution) with netflix but it didnt helped.
I would like to know if its normal or i've got a faulty tablet (its the 2nd tab s i've got with the same issue).
Thank you
It`s hard to see from that photo, have a search for "black crush" problem that affected Samsung displays in the past, see if your problem is the same, but this problem affects all video not just streaming, maybe it`s a compression problem from poor quality steaming.
I save your photo and loaded it into paint.net app and used the auto levels setting, as from your photo i could only see the center bright section.
John.
I would say it's more to do with the fact that the display has such a high resolution it is capable of showing up artifacts within the video that maybe another display is not capable of displaying.
I know the tab had a high res but this issue doesnt seem really normal to me.
i just did an exchange for another Tab s and it does the same thing on netflix. Is this possible because the resolution of the tab is 1.5x higher than 1080p i've got this issue?
I convert all my video`s to 640x360 on my 10.5" and they look great, so it`s more likely a streaming compression problem and not resolution.
John.

Question Really no fix for HDR/DV dark scenes?

I was really satisfied with tablet until I started to watch DV and HDR movies (netflix, hbomax, plex). Searching internet and I could not find nothing to get rid of "ultra" black dark scenes in videos.
Is there any app that would change gamma of video or something like that?
I'm so disappointed that I'm looking which tablet should I buy and sell this one ... wrote to Xiaomi via email and via system bug report and no solution, it seems they really don't care for us - users of this tablet ...
Anyone with some "solution" out there?
I am using kodi + netflix plugin to force SDR streams
It takes some effort to set up and you lose some of netflix functionality (like downloads)
I think there's also similar plugins for other services (disney+, HBOmax, etc) but I have not personally tried them
It's a shame because xiaomi keeps marketing this device as Dolby Vision capable but we have to look for workarounds to disable this "feature"
Hopefully they will fix it if we provide enough reports, and now that the device got released in India it's expected to get more attention because it's a big market for Xiaomi

I'm also looking for this from weeks but no luck. We have to wait if Xiomi will fix this via update or we have to accept and start using as it is.
For the new tablet, you won't get any tablet in this price range which can beat mi tab 5 performance (except DV and HDR issue) if you want to wait then check realme tab having 870 processor and same specifications as mi pad 5.
Maybe new lenovo, but cost more
there is no fix for this, the screen is ips
Go to Advanced tools -> Video toolbox and add apps to video toolbox. Now when you open any added app, you will see a pill at top left corner. Drag it and select different styles of scenes. One of those styles disables HDR.

That's not true at all. There's not a single option that disables HDR, they only apply filters to the apps you chose. HDR is on a system level and it cannot be disabled at this moment.
Toolbox might help if you chose the "Outside" style, but still crap with black/dark content.

I agree. It doesn't solve the issue entirely but atleast I can see the picture a little better in bright environment.
Xiaomi should definitely address this.

Yeah my thought exactly
People are saying this is an ips panel, display does not have enough brightness, etc.
Companies have been doing HDR on cheap displays for years
The ultimate goal of HDR is having better details in dark scenes.
You can still achieve this even if the display is ips or have average brightness, but you get the side effect of somewhat duller colors
But what I see on the Mi Pad 5 is definitely some kind of a software bug or miscalibration, because it does the exact opposite of HDR, it destroys scene details bright or dark
You can throw all the brightness in the world on this and it's not going to fix it

the problem is because the price, if you xiaomi change it with an amoled screen it will easily be 100$ more. your best bet is just sell your tab 5 now and buy a lenovo p11 pro with weaker processor but better screen.
and problems all the way, read their forums, it doesn't look good.

It is a SW issue. DV and HDR is fine with just player and mpv-android. It just doesn't work on streaming platforms.
It's also weird that people point out it's only 500 nits. Many laptop displays, ipads, imacs etc have "only" 500 nits too and they do HDR and DV fine (by fine I mean no black crush issues). So xiaomi just needs to fix it asap.
I have created a post about it in the official miui forums
https://c.mi.com/thread-4072183-1-0.html
if you have this issue and interested in getting it fixed you can leave a reply there that you have the issue
hopefully then it gets enough attention from devs
also report it from your device Settings -> Feedback
