Google Play does not install Apps - Moto G5 Questions & Answers

I installed a defective module for Magisk and my device (With Stock rom 8.1) went into a bootloop, so I did a reboot with recovery mode in TWRP and it turned on normally, but now I can't install any application from Play Store, sometimes returns error code 492.
I already tried:
Reboot device
Clear data and Clear Cache from:
Google Play Store
Google Play Services
Download Manager
Delete Google account and register again
Use another google account
Factory reset (With TWRP)
Hard reset (With TWRP)
Flash Stock rom (With CMD Windows and Platform-Tools)
Hard reset (With Stock Recovery)
Even install a custom ROM
This happens, download only a percentage of the application and the download manager is loading infinitely.

If you have done all the above and you still can't install apps on a pure stock rom after you have erased user data
fastboot erase userdata
Note the above command will wipe everything on internal storage
Then the only other variable is your sdcard
Remove it and reboot your device - if you can now install apps then format your sdcard

I ran fastboot erase userdata when I returned to Stock rom.

But I don't use sdcard in my device, could it be something related to internal storage?
Thanks for answering!

That error is usually related to cache
Wiping cache of the playstore Google services & Google framework would normally be enough to fix it
As you have returned to stock rom & erased user data I don't know why it wouldn't be installing apps assuming you haven't restored any previous app data from backups
If using a custom rom make sure you do the following
Format data in twrp (wipe option on right)
Restart to recovery
Wipe advanced wipe
Wipe system data cache and internal storage
Put the rom zip & gapps & magisk zips back to internal storage (you will need to mount the partition in twrp in mount options)
Flash rom zip gapps & magisk
Restart
I would use mind the gapps if using lineageos or nano open gapps for other roms from the link below
https://wiki.lineageos.org/gapps.html
If using a 64 bit rom (all custom android 9 roms are 64bit for this device) you need arm64 version

I cleaned the cache of both applications and make clean installation of the Stock rom, I do not want to use a custom rom for now, I would like to stay in pure Android 8.1.
I thought maybe there could be a cache that I haven't deleted.
Is it possible that there is still cache after all the wiping I've done?
Thanks!

You can use a 3rd party cache cleaning app - for example try
https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/pirif...ooster-optimizer-4-14-1-android-apk-download/
Which can automatically clean the cache with one click
Other than that you have done everything else

I had already used third-party applications to clear all the cache that could and did not work, it really seems like a very strange mistake.
The problem was resolved, apparently by itself.
The last steps I make were:
- Flashing the Stock Rom
- Start the device
- Restart in fastboot
- Install TWRP
- Install no-verity-opt-encrypt-3.1 (Flash zip from TWRP)
- Clear Cache / Dalvik
- Restart
After doing that the Play Store worked normally, I don't know if my actions solved the problem or any cache (which I didn't delete before) expired after the 5 days I started having the problem.
Thank you very much for answering!!

A Newbie Guide

Q1: What is a custom ROM? What to can it do to my phone?
A1: A custom ROM can be either:
- Modifications to the official company ROMs (a.k.a Stock ROMs) , which increases its speed and stability compared to original Stock ROMs .
Q 2.1: What's Recovery Mode? What is Download Mode? What are the different "Modes" that my phone can go into?
A2: Recovery Mode is a place where you go to if your phone is ever "stuck" or in a "bootloop" if you installed a ROM wrongly .
The stock recovery mode can't do much and therefore if you want better advantages such as:
-Backing up your current ROM and data
-Fixing Force Close Permissions
-Wiping your Dalvik-Cache
-Wiping Battery Stats (if your battery meter is jumpy , like all custom Stock ROMs)
-Install unsigned .zip files
-Formatting various parts of your internal memory (/system , /data etc)
-Mount USB Storage in Recovery Mode
The only thing you can do is use CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY
For Download Mode , it is a Samsung-exclusive feature that allows you to "Download" custom stock ROM files into your phone .
It works like a normal install in ClockWorkMod Recovery (a.k.a CWM) , except that it automates everything (wiping data , wiping system stuff)
These are possible modes which you can use to enter different places (for advanced people only):
Home + Power = Recovery Mode (whether stock or CWM)
Home + Volume Down + Power = Download Mode (normal)
Home + Volume Up + Power = ARMv9 Dump Mode
Home + Volume Down + Volume Up + Power = Download Mode (EMERGENCY)
Q2.2: What is ClockworkMod Recovery? How do I use it?
A2.2: ClockworkMod Recovery is one of the best custom recoveries out there and was made by the AWESOME koush
Here's how you use it by devilcode:

1.reboot system now
This one is self-explanatory.
2.apply update from sdcard
This can be used for installation of any official or unofficial update, ROM, kernel, theme etc. that is in a zip format installable from recovery, as long as the file is named update.zip and it has been placed on the root of your SD card (i.e. not in any sub-folder). Selecting this option (and most of the options featured below) will bring up a rather annoying confirmation prompt but this has saved us on multiple occasions from a lot of trouble we would have been into due to accidental key presses.
3.wipe data/factory reset
This option wipes all user data on the device as well as cache. Doing this will leave your phone in the state it was in when you bought it or when any custom ROM was first installed. It will also wipe any sd-ext partition that you might have setup
4.wipe cache partition
Wipes the cache partition of the device to clear all the data accumulated there over use. This is often used before installing a new ROM, app, kernel or any similar mod via recovery.
5. install zip from sdcard
This option brings up the following sub-menu:
A. apply /sdcard/update.zip
This one is essentially the same as the ‘apply update from sdcard’ option of the main menu.
B. choose zip from sdcard
Lets you install any zip file (with any name) from any location on your SD card. The file can be for a ROM, a kernel, an application, a theme or any mod as long as it is in recovery-flashable zip format. This is the most widely used option for installing a ROM that you have downloaded and copied to your SD card. Entering this option will bring up a screen that will allow you to browse your SD card for the zip file and select it for installation
C.toggle signature verification
Turns the signature verification on and off. When signature verification is on, you will not be able to install any custom ROMs that haven’t been signed by the developers (most custom ROMs aren’t signed). Switching it off skips the signature verification check and proceeds with the installation.
D. toggle script asserts
Seldom-used option for a vast majority of users. It simply turns script asserts on or off. If you don’t know about these (i don’t), it’s best not to change this option.
E. +++++Go Back+++++
Takes you back to the main recovery menu, obviously!
6.backup and restore
Undoubtedly one of the most important features provided by a custom recovery, the backup and restore feature – also known as Nandroid backup – allows you to take a snapshot of your phone’s entire internal memory including all partitions, and save it on the SD card.
A.Backup
Takes a Nandroid backup, as explained above.
B.Restore
Lets you restore a previously taken backup. Entering this option presents you with a list of existing backups from the SD card that you can choose from for restoration.
C.Advanced Restore
This option is similar to the Restore option but once a backup has been selected to be restored, this option allows you to choose what parts of it to restore. You can choose to restore the boot, system, data, cache and sd-ext partitions
7.mounts and storage
Allows you to perform maintenance tasks on all the internal and external partitions of your android device
A. mount/unmount /system, /data, /cache, /sdcard or /sd-ext
These options let you toggle between mounting or unmounting these respective partitions. Most users don’t need to change these options.
B.format boot, system, data, cache, sdcard or sd-ext
These let you directly format any of these partitions. Take extreme care with this option as formatting any of these partitions will result in losing all data on them, especially the boot and system partitions. Formatting the system partition will remove your ROM and leave your phone without an operating system while wiping the boot partition may brick your phone unless you restore or flash another one before rebooting your device. To learn more about the contents of all these partitions, see our guide to Android partitions.
C.mount USB storage
Lets you enable USB mass storage mode for your SD card right from recovery so that you can connect it to your computer via USB and transfer any files to/from it without having to leave recovery.
8.advanced
This section contains a few options most users will not require, though these can come handy quite often, especially wiping Dalvik cache, which is required before most ROM installations. Here are the options from this section:
A.Reboot Recovery
Lets you directly and very conveniently reboot from recovery right back into recovery. This is useful option for certain back-to-back installations that require the device to at least boot once between them.
B.Wipe Dalvik Cache
Allows you to wipe the cache for the Dalvik virtual machine (the custom-built Java virtual machine for Android). This is required before most ROM installations and at other occasions too, for fixing some problems.
C.Wipe Battery Stats
Wipes the saved battery usage statistics and effectively recalibrates the battery. Useful in various scenarios when Android isn’t showing correct battery levels.
D.Report Error
In case of errors, this feature can be used to save a log of recent ClockworkMod recovery operations on the SD card that you can later report from Android using ROM Manager.
E.Key Test
Lets you press any of the hardware keys to see if they are properly functioning, and to see their key codes.
F.Partition SD Card
This option gives you a no-frills way to partition your SD card properly for use with ROMs that support data2ext (a very handy hack for low internal memory devices that enables an /sd-ext partition on the SD card to be used as the internal user data storage i.e. as the /data partition). Once this option is selected, you will be given options to choose the sizes for the /sd-ext partition as well as an optional /swap partition on the SD card, and will then automatically format it for you, leaving the remaining space for normal SD card usage. This option will wipe all data from your SD card so use it with caution!
G.Fix Permissions
Fixes the file permissions for the internal memory partitions back to default. This is very useful as a fix for several errors and Force-Closes that start appearing after you or an application you installed and provided root access end up messing up the permissions of important files.
Hope it helps :d
Q3: Help me, my phone is in a bootloop and won't go into the Launcher!
A3: Firstly , define your bootloop:
If you are stuck at the "Motorolla" logo , that means you did not make a factory reset and cache wipe from Recovery Mode . Do that , then reflash and try again .
However , if your phone is stuck at the bootanimation:
Stuck for more than 10mins and is repeating the animation: You did not flash your ROM properly . Refer to above .
Stuck for less than 10mins and is NOT repeating: I suggest you have some patience
I wouldn't mind learning more on the Armv9 dump mode if you could find something about it
I always wondered what it does

How to backup Plants vs. Zombies with TiBackup?

Hi,
I Make progress of the game. I make backup. Then uninstall the game. Then Restore app plus data.
But the progress wouldnt restore. The game offers to download missing app data. After the download i am offered to create a new game profile.
So how should I backup this game and data?
Thanks.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
there may be a update available in the store you will have to download before restoring the app and data, because it sounds like the way your doing things inthe correct way but just check to see if there is an update in the store available for the plants vs zombies
Hi
Thanks. I tried that. There are no updates.
I tried by restoring app and data and then letting the app download its resources.
And tried to restore just the data after the app dowoaded all the resource files or updates.
Neither method worked.
This is the only app I cant backup and restore progress
Maybe plants vs zombies saves game data in sd card and titanium backup doesn't backup sd card content?

i had this problem with candy crush once, i backed up with TB and flashed a new rom and restored all my apps and candy crush with TB and it started from the begining, i deleted and tried again a couple of times with the same results, what worked was I redownloaded the app and then waited a little bit and then had the download an update and then used TB to get the data and it worked again, maybe this won't work for your situation but its sounds like the same thing, goog luck hope you get it

PVZ 2 Progress restore
Trying to do this same thing manually.
I have an 8.0 Note and dont want to root right now.
I have the game installed and trying to copy the progress to
my sons Tab2 10.1 also without root.
Ive copied over the folder below:
/storage/emulated/0/android/data/com.ea.game.pvz2_row/files/no_backup
However it does nothing.
Is it possible to copy a few files to restore your game progress to a different device or after a restore?

Clear your PVZ2 cache after copying the files. Davlik cache too might be necessary. Credit to edroit below...

Total NOOB question here, need some help....
Ive been doing Android here for a while but I dont know how to clear the app cache.
A little help with that?
Also, is it possible to clear the application and Davlik cache without root?
If you could give me a little guidance on how to would be much appreciated.
Thanks again for the advice below!!!

You should be able to clear the app cache without root. Not sure about the Davlik cache - I think the app I used to do that does require root.
App Cache - SETTINGS > APPS > PLANTS VS ZOMBIES 2
There's an option to clear the cache in there.

Problem HTC Wildfire S - Rom EQDKP 3.5 V5.2

Hi All,
I have installed this rom but on every reboot I have this problem:
Everything was working, but on every reboot I got the message :
"System UIDs Inconsistent. UIDs on the system are inconsistent, you need to wipe your data partition or your device will be unstable."
I push the only one option that i can:
I feel lucky
and the seems to be that all is ok but I'm still not sure...what can I do and how can I solve this problem?
Thanks and bye, Elisa.

I hope you've performed a clean install of ROM ie, in CWM recovery - wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik-cache, wipe battery stats, and then install the ROM and perform again all of the wipe as mentioned.
Uhmmm...I don't understand....sorry!
Can u explain excatly what I need to do?

I hope you've exactly followed the installation instructions mentioned in the ROM thread step by step -> [ROM] [2.3.5] EQDKP-Sense3.5 V 5.2
Not following any of the steps should break a clean install I'm afraid, so errors may happen. Anyways as I don't own this device, it may not be wise for me to give suggestions anymore. Soon a Moderator will move this thread into Wildfire S Q&A section, so members using this phone should help you out. Thanks and regards.
I think that i had made all the instruction but, for being sure, I will remake all the procedure now!
Thank u!
I remade akk the operation mentioned...and I'm sure to have done all but now I still have some problems...

and so on...
What can I so?

lots of reasons i think you should use this one.

it's latest sense 3.5 rom and instructions are crystal clear.wipe everything and install rom.
if you are going to use int2ext scripts flash them right after rom..go to advanced and wipe sd-ext and then reboot.
then these all won't be an issues i guess.good luck
Hi,
I can't understand this:
if you are going to use int2ext scripts flash them right after rom..go to advanced and wipe sd-ext and then reboot.
sorry but i'm really a disaster! Can u explain?
I think that I will make this passage:
1. wipe data/factory reset
2. In advanced Wipe Dalvik Cache
3. In advanced Wipe Battery Stats
4. Install zip from sdcard file Marvellous Sense 3.5 18-7-13
5. Reboot
something wrong or more? I need to format the sd card before doing this operation?
Thanks and bye, Elisa.

nah it's okay..
you have to also wipe cache..not only factory reset.
what problem you are facing now?
ps if you havent wipe cache then it's reason of your problems
Opssssssssssss.....I never made a wipe cache!
And now I still have the problem of the first post....and more I can't use facebook.....see this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43832660#post43832660
If I made now a wipe cache I need to reinstall all the rom? Do u think that with wipe cache I can resolve the facebook problem?
Thanks and bye, Elisa.
you either didn't wipe the dalvik cache... or u did restored system apps from titanium back up/other back up... that's why u r facing the problem...
you have to go to recovery first... if u have the rom installed long press power button and select the boot into recovery option... or press power + volume down together to enter to hboot menu and select recovery from there...
the other things are easy.... there is no reason to face this type of problems... make sure u didn't do the things i mentioned in bold font in this comment and followed the installation instructions properly...
also I'd suggest use the odexed version of the rom and use data2sd link is given in the post. Int2sd or link2sd etc. won't work with this. If u don't flash data2sd after installation the room will keep showing errors.. For data2sd u need to create 3 PRIMARY PARTITIONS in your memory card. in the post the instructions are given. All u have to do is read the instructions and understand it to use properly.
Hi,
Thanks for the reply but I'm really sure to have wipe the dalvik cache! And I'm really sure that I have not restored the application from any backup!
The only one thing that I haven't do is the new partition on the SD Card because they are already created from the previus version of your Rom....can be this the problem? I need to make from zero the partition?
I made this passage copied from your wonderful guide:
1. Reboot in recovery
2. Then wipe data/factory reset
3. Then advanced then Wipe Dalvik Cache & Wipe Battery Stats
4. Go back then install zip from sdcard
5. Choose EQDKPV5.1(*-*-2012).zip & flash
6.After that Reboot & Wait 3-10 minutes until ROM is fully booted. Then take the battery out.
7.After that Reboot into recovery again to install data2sd in this case no need of wipe/format etc. just install Data2SDInstallerES.zip & reboot.
I already flash the file data2sd but I don't this application on phone.....
What do u suggest to do? Can i try with a wipe cache?
Please note that I tried 4 times to install the new rom in last 4 days!
Thank u so much! Elisa.

In Sense 3.5, the app Facebook is integrated in Friend Stream. So if you already created an account, you just have to open this app, and it will show your Facebook content. If you use several social networks, you can choose which one you want to see by clicking on the bar at the top of the app ; a dropdown list will appear with 'Facebook', 'Twitter', etc.
I tried tu use Friend stream and I can put my login on facebook....I click ok but then this error happen:

And more: I haven't made the format on the SD Card because the partition are already created from the previous install....can be this the problem? I need to make from zero the partition?
Really thank!
Elisa

EQDKP is very stable and it has the best benchmark of all the ROMs for the WildFire S, but I do not like its design But if you do, it is better than Marvellous Sense I think.
When did you buy your phone ? Maybe it is 2012 model.
You can also try to use this recovery instead of ClockWorkMod. Put your phone in bootloader mode, then flash it with fastboot : fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.0-marvel.img.
One thing that you can do is to wipe nothing but to use this script (flash it, reboot recovery and flash the rom).
Thank!
I download the 2 files (SuperWipeMarvelcEdition.zip and openrecovery-twrp-2.2.2.0-marvel.img.md5)....but now...which one do u suggest to use? Can u explain the passage for using it?
Sorry but, as u understand, I'm really a disaster!
Many, many thanks!
PS: Yes, the phone is from 2012!

First, reboot in recovery.
Second, flash SuperWipeblablabla
Third, reboot recovery
Fourth, flash EQDKP 5.2
Fifth, reboot your phone and wait
Sixth, use this tutorial to tell me if your WFS is 2012 model.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply but I'm really sure to have wipe the dalvik cache!
Elisa.

I dont understand u'r problem actually... If u hadn't recovered system apps.. But the error message you are reporting is the one of conflicting system apps...
That can not happen in my rom or any other rom... The thing izi501 telling try it... But I don't think your recovery has a problem...
Clearly while flash a rom UID will be changed... But I dont understand why your device's UID isn't changing!!! The old UID staying intact thats why u r seeing that error... Is it problem with this rom only??? Have you tried any other rom???
Also about facebook... I have not faced any problem while uploading the rom... I'll test it tonight again though... (Its an app ported from HTC Sensation which has Sense version 3.0 as HTC explorer {the device from which eqdkp is ported} didnt have an working FB app)
Anyways... Take your device to a local phone store/htc customer care and try to S-off the device... (May be you did something wrong with the unlocking...)
You could also try different recoveries, make sure that they are for ur device if ur model is gsm, try only the recoveries for gsm devices... There is a chance of bricking while u flash wrong recovery/radio etc... Be careful about it... Have patience... Read everything in a post before trying to use any mod... There may be important things that U are missing...
About partitioning: http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
Download the free home edition... And make three partitions serially... No1: Rest No2: about 1000mb EXT4 No3: about 418mb Linux swap Make sure all partitions are primary...........Its important...

Cyanogen mod 7 gb internal memory help

Ive installed this rom coming from mildwild rom with cm7r2 hboot and ive installed apps and it is full and i had to install s2e but still dont work so is got to do something with the script?
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda app-developers app
Which version of CM7 did you install, did it come with a A2SD script already?
Install 'DiskUsage' if you haven't already (recommended this to you when you started rooting months ago). Have a look at your /data partition which should be 287MB large with cm7r2 hboot, and see what is filling it up.
As with any internal memory issues, understand how it is being used first before attempting to solve it...
Oh ive solved it, i had to tick the applications and applications data in s2e, i downloaded it from their website.

Lol well yeh...you do actually have to configure it to tell it what to move...
It's best to move only applications and dalvik cache to sd-ext though
Application data is best left your /data partition, generally more stable, not to mention should be faster

Strange, I've never used s2e but the principle is the same as any other really.
Normally the procedure is;
- flash rom
- setup a2sd
- restore apps
That way the apps etc get restored to where you want them first time, rather than moving them later.
Try first going to recovery, wiping dalvik cache then rebooting, hopefully it will restore to the sd-ext like you want.
If that doesn't work then assume your already have a titanium backup of all your apps?
- nandroid backup
- full wipe and flash rom again
- setup s2e, move apps and dalvik, reboot
- restore apps
- check with diskusage to confirm everything is moved to where you want it

i did this: went into the filemanager and installed s2e and needed root permissions so i did the same and installed it, then went in and ticked in s2e mount as ext4 and restarted and some apps are recovered, so now i have to tick application and dalvik like you said, i wanted to use a2sd script but i dont know where to get it from, im using cyanogenmod-7.2.0.1-bravo.
edit: i ticked em still the same only some apps are recovered.
Now try part 2...

Not sure what you have tried, did you try to full wipe and flash ROM again?....(it's easier if you type in full sentences and use punctuation sometimes )
- You don't have to use Titanium Backup, just assumed you want to transfer your apps between ROMs? Do you not want to save your apps and data / preferences when switching? There are various apps which will do this, but Titanium is one of the most tried and trusted methods.
- Is the google verification a Play Store error? Normally a clear of the play store app data / cache resets it.
- You can use any compatible A2SD script. It's just better to set up A2SD before you install / restore any apps. Alternatives are int2ext, mount2sd, or darktremor A2SD. But they do roughly the same thing. In simple terms, only use one method at a time, you want to move apps and dalvik to sd-ext. I'm pretty sure S2E would have worked fine if you did as instructed...never mind.
Yh I flashed again and then had google error verification, I thought i'd go back to mildwild 5 cos its better for me, the titanium backup I didn't have a backup of apps so that's why... thanks anyway

Z2 Play stuck on boot up screen...

I'm rooted on stock Nougat ROM (I think... I rooted it a couple years ago), bootloader unlocked.
A few days ago my phone just stopped booting up correctly. It boots to the blue Moto screen with the boot animation but stays there forever.
I can get into TWRP and view all of the files in system, Internal SD card, and External SD card. I've backed up a bit of it just in case but I'm hoping someone here can tell me what to try to get it to boot correctly.
Is there a quick or obvious way to fix this that anyone is aware of?
I have an old TWRP backup and when I go into "Restore" I have the option to restore System, Data (excl. storage), Boot, Recovery, EFS, and logo... so is worth it to try restoring one of these (such as boot or system)?
I'm looking to try the safest things first... I really don't want to have to wipe my device or worse, brick it.
Thanks
Well, if you don't have any important data in the phone (you can copy files via USB), you can just do factory reset and see

Well, I have some important data but I can backup my /data/ folder. The problem (other than the fact that it will take a lot of time) is that I'm not sure how to restore the apps and data once I factory reset it.
It would be different if they were Titanium Backup backups but I don't know of a way to restore an app with just having the apps data folders.
What will happen if I go into TWRP and Install the stock rom zip file? Will I lose data or root or mess with anything important?
More generally:
a) your problem may be in system - then reflashing system would help. It can be done without loosing data
b) your problem may be in data (which is more likely) - you have to wipe data
a) Reflashing system can be done by flashing correct images via fastboot (using script that doesn't wipe data) or in recovery if you have flashable zip of your rom (I'm not sure whether there are any). However, even after flashing system, it still may not work because of some conflicts with data so wiping data may be unavoidable
b)how to minimalize losses: what kind of important data do you have? If it is files, they can be copied easily. If it is app data, it's harder. However, if you have Google Backup turned on, most apps use it to backup their data. What particular app's data do you need to save, if you don't mind telling?
I know there used to be app that was able to extract individual app's data from TWRP backup and restore it. Maybe it was Titanium Backup Pro. But as nowadays non-cloud backups aren't a thing anymore, these apps quite vanished or their development stopped and they also may not work with new android versions.
You can download stock firmware here: https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/albus/official/
Nougat is available for RETAIL, RETLA, RETRU, RETUS and VZW. Where did you buy your phone? It is best to flash the ROM for the same region to avoid problems if you want to keep data. But you can flash any.

Honestly, what I needed to recover were unread messages/whatsapp messages I never read and mostly just to avoid the headache or starting over but I'm over that. And what you said about using Titanium Backup to restore individual apps from a nandroid backup... that's exactly what I read about yesterday and was planning on doing.
Just now I tried restoring an old system backup and and a recent data/system backup but both times it got stuck at boot... so I think I'm either going to just flash my stock rom or do a restore of my system/data from last year...
My phone was running "Albus 7.1.1/NPS26.118-24/25" and I found a zip named "ALBUS_C_NPS26.118-24_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip" (which has SW listed as "SW Version: albus_c-user 7.1.1 NPS26.118-24 25 release-keysM8953P_23.33.07.34R") so I think I found the right one.
Would you recommend restoring system and data from a working (but old) backup in TWRP or just flashing my rom again?
Also, I'm not sure if I need to reflash magisk or flash the no-verity-opt-encrypt zip (or wipe something).
Either way, I'm going to just try one of those once I hear you recommendation.
Thanks
SMS may be backed up by Google, WhatsApp not if you didn't have automatic backup turned on (or done backup manually).
First of all, I would flash just system and other stuff except data. I don't recommend flashing official zips in recovery. If the phone is rooted, they will fail anyway and they may delete data. It is better to flash via fastboot. Do you remember your update channel Do you have US retail device? Then you may try the zip you found. But not in recovery. It is not a recovery flashable zip. Extract it and I will send you a .bat file to flash via fastboot.

It's an unlocked, US, Moto Z2 Play (XT1710-01). I ordered it from motorola's website. I never updated it, I just followed these instructions (https://gist.github.com/eexit/e6d5fc0984e1c7f25376d3dafa819792) to unlock bootloader, boot TWRP, back it up, and flash magisk.
extract your zip, place there fastboot.exe from attachment if you don't have one and run the bat. It will install the rom without wiping data. It is made for newest Nougat 'XT1710-01_ALBUS_C_7.1.1_NPSS26.118-24-23_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip' rom from here: https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/albus/official/RETUS/

So place your bat file in the extracted folder and run the bat file? Does my phone need to be in fast boot and do any of these files need to be on my phone or I can just do it from my PC?
All files in the same folder, phone in fastboot. Then run the bat

I gave it a go but it's still hanging on boot.

Then you'll probably have to wipe data. Backup them (to SD) and then try wipe
If you have unlocked bootloader and TWRP backup it is almost impossible to brick your Z2 Play, just flash Stock Nougat, Stock Oreo or Stock Pie and your phone should boot again.
By the way it looks, you will lose all your personal information.
If the classic wipes haven't worked you gotta try flash Stock ROM through fastboot.
