Help wanted: multitasking. - Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite Questions & Answers

It is pretty bad. Although, I feel that it had been better before certain security updates, but I couldn't remember specifically which ones. Right now, at August update, I've got all optimisations turned off, battery saver turned off, adaptive battery turned off, individual app optimisations are also turned off, in developer settings I've got standard limit of background processes, killing apps is turned off.. I really don't know what else one could turn off, in order to render multitasking operable. I'm on stock with unlocked bootloader. Any help would be massively appreciated, because I am really frustrated by having two out of four gigabytes of RAM which is always free and unused, but my apps are getting killed almost instantly after I've left them.

Tips on Improving Battery Life and Speed

I see lots of posts around the Interwebs complaining about battery life on smartphones (specifically Android ones, since I don't hang out on sites that are aligned with evil Apple), so I decided to consolidate my knowledge for people with Slide's to improve their battery life.
DISPLAY
This uses about 80% of the power according to battery use on auto-brightness. On a bright day I can read the screen at about 1/5 position on the brightness bar which cuts down heavily on the battery use.
There's not much else we can do to cut down on screen power usage, so moving on.
CPU
This one requires SetCPU, I strongly urge you to buy it from the Market (it's just a few bucks IIRC) and supports the AWESOME dev. If you're cheap just go download it from that link.
Once you have it you'll want to set up profiles! So click profiles, check the box next to the Sleep profile and choose 480,000/480,000 with ondemand scaler! I have no idea if it actually changes anything but the placebo effect is nice. Next back out of that and set the CPU governor to performance. What this does is clock the CPU to 600mhz constantly instead of scaling between 480mhz and 600mhz as the additional power is needed. It cuts down on choppiness while barely increasing the amount of battery required (in my experience the Slide tends to jump up to 600mhz when I'm not doing anything anyway).
Sync
Turn auto-sync off or set the sync intervals to the highest number possible (once a day I believe). It takes power and most of the time doesn't download anything important. If you really need some data just go and hit Sync Now and, well, it syncs.
Autostarts
There is this nifty little paid application in the market (costs like $1.25 or something) that you absolutely need: Autostarts
Basically applications launch when triggers are triggered, alot of these are pointless and just take up RAM and power.

There's an app called Autokiller, it changes the internal task killer's settings as to when to tell an app to shutdown (at stock settings this is almost never).
I use the moderate preset, but you may want to increase it if you never want to have to manually kill a task. Note that this method tells apps to cleanly shut down so data is saved (such as the page you are on in the Browser)
Additional Settings
In Mobile Networks set to GSM only (no 3G)
Turn GPS and WiFi off when not in use
Turn always on data off
Use a silent or vibrate alert method instead of sound alerts
Turn off your screen whenever you can
If you flashed ENG-BUILD flash the updated RADIO!!!!!!!
Protips
Do several battery cycles every 6 weeks (Charge to 100%, discharge to 0%, charge 2 hours past green LED while phone is off)
Espresso is heavy duty stuff, use a non-sense ROM for additional speed
Charging via USB takes significantly longer than charging via AV
Live Wallpapers will use lots of battery
Use wallpapers formatted at 480x320
Limit the amount of widgets you have to around 5 (unless they are from the same app, like Beautiful Widgets) they constantly refresh and do their thing in the background
I learned most of this thanks to enatefox's guide which I modified to suit the Slide, a coffee fueled mind, and general observations. If you have anything to contribute please let me know and I'll add it!

i disable APN until I need it. screen is about 30% always. after everything i do i lock the screen.
on a normal days use (1-2hr phone calls, 30-50min of browsing the net, a ton of text messaging, and streaming slingbox) I'll have about 60% battery by 10pm.

does autostart continually kill those processes? I ask because that long list of bloatware you listed is what is irritating me on my slide and even when I force kill them all they restart themselves every 5 minutes. I have taskilller set to kill them and they come back like the herp constantly.

Autostarts does not 'kill' processes, it disables them from running when certain triggers are triggered.
For example if SpywareApplicationOVER9000 runs everytime an application is installed, and you disable it in Autostarts, then it will not run when an application is uninstalled

Seriously, though, there is a thread in the General forum that goes through many of the ways to improve battery life. I personally have found that battery savers just do not do what I want, and sometimes they use more battery when installed. I like to set it all manually. It is a lot of work to set up, but the battery savings can be great.
A lot of it requires root access, but I think this is a must in any case, even if only to be able to set up a firewall.

It's useless,
there're steps for saving batteries.
1. Reduce brightness to less than 30% during indoor, this should be enough for most people;
2. Turn off mobile data and use only wifi whenever you in wifi-spot
3. Don't always use live-wallpaper
battery saver apps are designed to kill apps/processes to reduce battery usage. however, this ends up being a waste of time as these apps and processes will often reopen themselves after. so you end up in a boot-kill loop for every app, which ends up using more CPU cycles which ends up killing the battery faster.
you're better off leaving these apps in the background since they dont use CPU cycles when theyre inactive.
if you want to save battery, turn off wifi and bluetooth when youre not using them. otherwise your device will constantly waste battery by trying to ping local wifi hotspots and bluetooth devices.
turn the screen brightness down and use dark backgrounds. on amoled displays, black means LED off which means no power consumption. white means LED on which means full power consumption (a white screen on an amoled display consumes more than twice the amount of power an LCD display would use).
dont use live wallpapers.
turn off mobile data when youre not using it. or if this is inconvenient for you, disable any widgets that constantly use your data (ie. weather widgets) or set their update interval to every 3 hours or so (lets face it... who needs to know how much the temp changes every minute...).

Battery life stats and questions

What's a good figure for battery life on the GS3? The best I've got is about 31 hours using on demand and bfq. Any one got better life using other settings? I heard someone getting about 43 hours life but that seemed to be a little unbelievable. Let me know what your getting

What you reported is definitely "the average". Most actually only get a day, if they're lucky of moderate use and have to plug in before sleep every evening and get going on charge in morning. So its more like 15 hours actually. And your 31 max is very common high end for people who've stretched it out.
I'm not sure if you're stock rom or not and if rooted either but that makes a big difference.
I'm rooted ( and would ALWAYS RECOMMEND ROOT FOR EVERYONE EVEN UF NOT FLASHING ANY ROMS AND STAYING ON STOCK. The ability to have full control is important.
Changing kernels and more importantly, undervolting, will give you that longer life you're looking for.
I'm currently on KyanROM with either Ktoonez or Faux kernel (heavily tweaking and testing both) and have this phone beautifully undervolted to exceptionally low and very stable mv numbers! Thus getting me that lovely 36-45hour average (you mentioned you saw posted elsewhere - yes it is possible and many are doing it). I basically only need to plug in every OTHER EVENING or night between 6pm and midnight depending on usage and I'm a moderate to heavy user (with a lovely 3-5 hours of screen time as well) AND I also have my phone overclocked to 1.8Ghz! Surprisingly, the oc doesn't make much battery life impact at all because the phone isn't constantly having to run at high levels, only in short spurts. Actually, due to rooting and kernel change I'm able to have my phone run as low as 192Mhz during much of its general activity and deep sleep ( which I get a ton of as my phone basically always goes into it when the screen goes off). This saves me A LOT of battery life.
I also use LTE, which is actually one of the biggest if not the largest battery hog, next to screen time of course. But with that being said I only use it when needed and have it turned off when not in use.
As for my peak I was able to squeeeeeze out 87 hours once, on my stock battery BUT that was with some abnormal(for me) measures that really help conservation. Ie, no LTE, under clocked to 1.2Ghz for good part of the three days, much less then normal screen time over the period of which I used it at lowest level with even further reduction via screen filter, I actually used airplane mode during my three overnight sleeps (which I seldom use but if you can hack it, do it! It can really save battery overnight. My current setup basically SIPS MY BATTERY AT 1% EVERY 3.5-4 HOURS OVERNIGHT WHEN IN AIRPLANE MODE), mobile data was off for most of time but did use my wifi at normal level (wifi uses less especially if good signal with few reconnects/scans), used my typical low UV numbers, kept my notification updates/syncs/wakelocks to a minimum and lastly kept my memory virtually clear if unnecessary background apps.
Doing ALL of this allowed me to get OVER THREE DAYS BATTERY LIFE. But keep in mind I seldom do many of these battery saving tips on a regular basis but some do and if you can, they WILL work to extend your life substantially!
To wrap up (this long winded post/reply) I'll give you my general UV mv range numbers and the typical everyday simple battery saving methods I use.
1.My voltage at lowest clock of 192mhz=800mv with gradual (smooth and almost linear curve) increase up to a mere 1200mv at a whopping 1.890Ghz clock.
I use NOOP scheduler with ONDEMAND governor most of the time, sometimes SmartassV2.
My screen off and deep sleep use this lowest 192 clock speed and with no wakeup lag.
2. I use my screen at 0% brightness most of the time (except when outside or in high lighting environment). I use the brighrness widget app to control this as it is easier and works better then stock settings. I actually even further reduce my brightness with Scree Filter App. That app is awesome and often use it solely for brightness control because it has full control and can dim it to basically full black if wanted. Which is MUXH lower then stock control. Fyi I use my phone a LOT more at night or in dark environment thus allowing me to dim screen HEAVILY yet it still is actually plenty bright with ample contrast in dark environments to do everything. This saves on my battery HUGE!
3. I use LTE when needed and GSM/HSPA+ when not. Seldom turn of mobile data altogether. I do turn off wifi when out and only using mobile data.
4. I use Screebl app to have screen turn off when not in use. Its great liitle app. Basically let's you turn down screen timeout to 15 seconds or less so screen is never unnecessarily on but it always stays on when in use due to the accelerometer and it knows when the screen is not flat on table! Its very annoying when browsing or doing stuff where screen isn't touched for long periods and the screen goes to sleep! But this stops that! So its always on when upright or in use and when phone down it turns off immediately.
5. Very important step and can take some time and research but making sure to keep partial wakelocks and apps keeping device awake to a bare minimum! DEEP SLEEP IS VERY IMPORTANT TO SAVE BATTERY! You basically want it to go into that every time your screen goes off and to stay in it uninterrupted for as long as possible. And many users phones are NOT making it into deep sleep due to partial wakelocks and they don't even know it or how to fix it. Not getting deep sleep can unnecessarily kill your battery!
I use a few tools here: Better Battery Stats/GSAM Battery Monitor/Battery Monitor Widget from within System Tuner Pro (which is my also my main and highly recommended tuner app for CPU oc/uc and UV,etc.).
These apps really help to determine what, if any, apps are causing partial wakelocks ( displaying in wake number amounts and overall wake time) allowing you to determine what to do to fix the problem and let the phone gets as much battery saving deep sleep as possible.
6.I'm not big on auto app killers and actually recommend against them as Android ICS does this already very effectively but do keep in mind that the more active background memory that is used, the more battery the battery is drained. So I personally kill unnecessary apps myself from the background whenever possible to save a little battery here and there. Using the apps listed above in #5 can really help to detect a nasty background app or service that is quite possibly unknowingly using a ton of CPU and/or memory, thus draining more battery and also often just slowing down your phone!
7. For those who can use it Airplane Mode is a big saver! Try overnights if wanted as long as missing notifications, emails, calls, updates, etc is alright for you. I seldom use it but it does help.
8. I almost never use my Bluetooth and GPS but when I do that is the ONLY time they are on. They get turned off immediately and really be careful with the GPS in particular because you might be surprised how many things on your phone will use it in the background, sucking your battery!
9. Be careful with sound and vibration levels. Haptic feedback too. I don't do much here but its anotherctip nonetheless.
10. Lastly is treating and charging your battery right! I found an amazing site linked down below in a couple of articles that really explains these batteries and how they work in a very in depth technical level this is still not too hard to follow. Aside from the two links I posted check out the others on the left menu as there is a ton of useful and educational info!

Btw I've just received both my 3300mAh and 4400mAh capacity batteries. So I have much testing to do on those too and I plan on reporting back on them as well. Also with screenshots for data and proof...I can and will also post screenshots for all of the numbers and stats I've posted here today with my personal phone/battery accomplishments.
Hope this helps some of you out there because yes this phone can be known for terrible battery life but it CAN be tweaked to SUBSTANTIALLY IMPROVE that life to high standards and keep up with the best of them!

On Stock battery - Kyan Rom/Ktoonez kernel (at this moment)
Seems about right. My phone is completely stock and if I really wanted to I could even use it for 2 work days. I usually charge it over night though. I used it for 2 days though while at work, and with 3 hours of screen on time I was down to 7% battery. Around 40 hours on.
I was stocked rooted using Sammy kernel. On demand BFQ. I'll try on demand noop and see if that helps. My screen was about 35% brightness.

Can I hijack a little here? My battery seems to be atrocious. It was okay stock after my first 3 full charges I was getting about 12 hours and 2.5 screen time.
Here is what I've done with my phone since:
Flashed to debloated stock Rom
disabled remaining unneeded apps (example ATT wifi app)
disabled Wifi
disabled bluetooth
disabled GPS
disabled GPS autorun states
disabled 4g
disabled autobrightness, set to 15%
disabled location reporting
disabled Push email with Exchange
disabled Motion
disabled auto google backup
disabled keytones and vibrate on all button presses
disabled touch key lights
disabled Svoice
disabled streaming on googleplay, only plays from memory card
disabled Google Now
fixed the cell standby bug (even though it may not impact battery figured wth)
Uninstalled FB
Set all Autosync accounts and email to sync only once per day
No widgets (only Google play music, Smemo note, flashlight, and folders)
Running save power mode for low power screen, no haptic, and auto adjust screen to blacks
Running mostly black wallpaper, No live wallpaper.
Running medium intensity vibration
I ran battery stats and got a lot of wakelocks from googlemaps and exchange so I disabled the push email and set it to once a day. Google maps I disabled latitude, and shut down the autostarts with gemini.
It's getting to the point where the phone is basically a dumbphone just so the battery can make it while it sits next to me at work. Today I have 48% after 8 hours and 50 minute screen time and 20 minutes of google play (only playing from on SD card not streaming).
Any ideas? It seems like I'm getting less than average.
All I did was also flash debloated rooted stock. Set to top out at 1.5ghz power save on. On demand BFQ schedule. Screen brightness as low as I can to still read. And got 32ish hours. I'm going to try OnDemand and noop like the other guy said and UV a lot more and see how close to 40 hours I can get

Can u link me on the bfq? Having troublefinding what that is.
Also, is that the built in power save that limits the processor or some other software?
I believe if you flash Sammy kernel it has bfq. I am on task's CM10 and kernel and battery life seems poor compared to CM9 or stock rooted

Have the h811 and using the app but don't know if it's working. On slumber mode

The deep sleep battery app? That's the first relevant thing I found in the playstore. And the comments on it don't seem too good.
A lot of folks here will recommend the greenify app instead and picking the apps you want to go into a sleep mode until triggered to wake up.

Yeah that's what I am referring to the deep sleep battery app, I as well am using greenify with xposed module for deeper sleep
With the screen off, you can just swipe down on the off screen to see the time. You will see that your mobile data is shut off. At least this works for me. I can clearly see my LTE symbol disappearing.

To be honest, I have. I also know that it's working because I swipe down when my screen is off and I see that my mobile data has shut off. Last night, I fell asleep without charging my phone at 67% and woke up to.... 67%, I was asleep for about 6 hours. I came from the Sony Xperia Z2 and kept stamina mode on 24/7. I was able to pull off well over 30 hours with that phone. Using deep sleep battery saver (which was based off the same idea as Stamina mode) I definitely noticed a difference in idle battery. Of course, once you get into any sort of task with the screen on then that's a different story.
The LG G4 already had pretty amazing idle times but I have a lot of apps that loves to wake up the phone when I'm sleeping. Before the app, I noticed that I'd wake up to maybe a 5% drain at minimum over the course of 6~7 hours. Sometimes, when my apps update on their own, I'd notice a significant drop of maybe even 10%.
I paid for the app since it's pretty cheap but honestly, I don't notice any real benefit to having the paid version. The paid version allows you to set some whitelist apps which is what Sony's Stamina mode allowed. However, if you're okay with not having that control then the free version is more than enough. Who knows, maybe some people will benefit less from it :/
I just want to make a point that I am also using it in conjunction with Greenify. I'm not sure if using the two really bears any great benefits but under my impression, greenify hibernates user apps while deep sleep can basically prevent anything from accessing data since it also shuts off mobile data. I can't see how using the two would hurt so why not? It looks like they both do different things that combined would be a very powerful battery saver.

I have Greenify as well and my battery life is TERRIBLE on this phone. I am lucky to get 8 hours before going from 100% to under 50%...I have a ton of bloat frozen and a ton of apps Greenified. What system apps are you Greenify'ing? The battery life is killing me on this phone, thank God I got a free battery with the promotion.

I didn't greenify any system apps. I just greenified every single user app that could potentially run while the phone was not in use. I also used tasker to force greenify my facebook app the minute the screen turns off instead of waiting for greenify to activate. I also used kernel adiutor to change the big core's governor to powersave and then changed the LITTLE core's governor to interactive.
Like I said in a previous post, I most use greenify for user apps as I kind of don't want to touch system apps at this moment. I use deep sleep battery saver for anything else that could potentially dodge greenify (like system apps that tries to access data). As all these settings so far are for when the screen is off, the Kernel Adiutor settings are for helping with battery life when the screen is on. I don't think the tasker setting is necessary as it very well could just be a placebo effect but I don't like how facebook isn't hibernated immediately.

Awesome, thanks for the informative reply. One question, wouldn't putting the CPU governor on powersave make the phone run really choppy/laggy? Also, I have the Verizon G4 no unlocked bootloader but root.

Most day to day tasks are done with the "LITTLE" cores while intensive tasks are done using the faster "big" so you won't normally notice any lag since the governor for the littles is interactive. I figured the only time I would really drain my battery is when I'm using intense tasks that would utilize the big cores. You will notice a little lag when in really heavy apps like the camera but it's really not that bad - it's not like a "I'm-going-to-miss-my-shot-because-it's-so-laggy" bad. Just give it a shot and you'll see what I mean. I don't use my phone for gaming but I do use it for almost everything else including streaming videos and I don't notice any lag other than in the camera - which, like I said, isn't that bad. If you do want to tweak around with the governor though, I high recommend Kernel Adiutor since it is compatible with the big.LITTLE system (meaning it can set the separate governor for both big and little cores) unlike Rom Toolbox Pro.
While I can bear with the slight lag for the extra battery life, you may not be able to take it. Your mileage may vary I guess. Battery life is much more important to me than high performance since I don't do anything intense like gaming or heavy rendering and I'm always on the go so I'm willing to make that sacrifice.
For me deep sleep has been giving me battery drain issues and uninstalled it after two days of use on slumber and my custom mode that didn't let no app awake and also the force tune cpu and what not yet still battery drain. With it off battery drains much much more less

Adaptive Battery Off: This lets apps run in the background the way they were originally designed. This boosts performance by allowing all RAM to be consumed in the background. Good for Speed. The bottom line is killing apps in any way to help battery will make it worse.
RAM Efficiency On: Before I stated that killing RAM was pointless but on the Moto G Power there's a option called RAM Efficiency. This option was designed by Motorola technicians what it does is kill apps you hardly use. This allows that RAM to be redirected to apps you use more frequently. Neat Option I like it.
Developer Options: Hit build number in settings then go into developer options you must disable mobile network always active. For some reason it's automatically enabled on this phone and decreases battery life for the sake of faster speed. If your WiFi drops the app you're using will automatically save your packets if not the app is poorly written. For example in Call of Duty if my connection switches my packets are automatically restored and I can keep going. Keeping this on will waste your battery.
Some people will say turning adaptive battery off is bad but I digress. It will collide with the RAM Efficiency option which is better at handling RAM. The battery saver will save you 5%-10% yes but it kills your apps and slows the system down too much. Adaptive RAM is better at redirecting and closing apps and it does the same thing as adaptive battery it's just called something different. Adaptive battery just kills apps you don't use for better battery it doesn't redirect it to apps you use often.
Unfortunately the option to avoid poor WiFi connections is gone. So battery was sacrificed all together to keep you connected to WiFi even though you have no signal. Poorly poor choice whoever made that decision.
