sms/mms backups/folder location - LineageOS Questions & Answers

Hi evryone!
Could someone please explain this to me:
Why does the sms/mms messages have to be stored in a database? and why a specific location?
Isnt it possible to have the messages stored in a messages folder together with the other user folders, and perhaps even in plain text, or easily viewable format?
the reason i ask is i dont like any of the backup app solutions for messages much, and i would like an easier method of backing up my messages, ie when i do a backup of all my userdata with one app like smbsync2 the messages wont get backed up because of the storage location...

Back-up questions

What are the differences between Xbackup and the backup program in Activesync? I am familiar with the one included in Activesync.
What I really want is something like Ghost for a desktop - something where I can screw with the registry or programs and if I mess something up I can just install that "image" and have everything fixed and like it was before. Can either of these do that?
I think your best bet is to pick-up Sprite Backup. It images your entire device into a self-extracting EXE file that you can store on a memory card.
It can also be used to save your programs and other files between software upgrades. A very handy program!
N.
Where do I get it? How much does it cost, if anything? Any other tips in its installation or use? Anyone else have any comments or thoughts?
Just remember that these types of backup can not be restored when you do a ROM upgrade.
I use WebIS Mail and store all my emails on the unit's internal storage card. I still have not found a way to back up all my sms and mms messages. So on every full reinstall or ROM upgrade, I loose all my sms and mms messages . The only app I have used to back up my text messages is Jeyo Mobile Extender for Outlook. However, it does slow down Outlook when you open it.
I guess I would like something that allows me to store a file on my SD card that I can re-install if I were to have trouble out and about, as it were.
Tell me more about this Jeyo Mobile Extender. What does it do?
As for backing up SMS and MMS messages can't you (and this is just theory, I have not tried it yet) move all messages in your SMS or MMS inboxs to your Outlook inbox and then sync up and move them into your inbox in Outlook on your desktop and then reverse the process to put them back in?

Google: Jeyo Mobile Extender
It's a valid theory, but I'm looking for an application that will backup my mms and sms files real time via wifi or usb. Jeyo Mobile Extender still doesn't have the option to sync via wifi. At least I have not gotten it to work properly. Syncing via USB works like a charm though.

Need help - Missing SMS messaging

I recently received my Verizon TP2 and noticed that I dont have sms/mms messaging on the phone. I was able to add email accounts to the phone but I dont see text messages in the account picker or the drop down box if I am in an email account. Any thoughts on how I can restore it without hard resetting the phone?
Thanks
on your previous phone...were you using the same micro sd card that you now have in the tp2? if so... with the file explorer, delete your old email inbox folder off your sd card.. i know that sounds strange but i had a similar instance where my sms messaging dissappeared off my phone and conflicting email folders was the cause... hope this is your problem and fix!
I already did a hard reset. But just to be safe I erased my old inbox folders on my storage card.
Thanks

Stock messaging app issues after the OTA 1.21 update

After the 1.21 OTA update I've had 2 issues with my messaging application and I believe they may be related to eachother.
The sms counter shows I have a lot more sms's between myself and others than I initially expected, to be specific close to 4000 with just one contact which I found to be absurd. Upon closer inspection it appears all my sms's have been duplicated that is there are double or duplicate entries of every single received and sent sms between me and all my contacts.
I currently have an application called SMS backup by Christoph Studer which allows me to backup all my sms to my gmail which I find extremely handy.
When updating I assume that the phone made a backup of my sms's to be restored or that they are already stored somewhere on my sd card and after the update I assumed they were all restored. Now I would have expected to only see one set of sms's and not 2 and I'm thinking that maybe it has something to do with my SMS backup app being tied to my gmail and that after it restored it off my sd card, that it resynced my entire gmail with contacts, emails etc and also synced my sms's from my gmail hence having duplicate sms.
When I send and receive sms's I dont receive duplicates, I only have duplicates of everything before the OTA update.
I want to know the workaround for this to remove those duplicate sms's apart from manually deleting each and every single sms, which I guess I will resort to enventually.
My 2nd problem which I may believe is linked to the first problem is that the stock messaging app seems to be working much more slowly than before ever since the update. Usually after I send an sms it will appear fairly quickly in the threaded view, now it takes easily a few seconds more and appears to hang before it shows. Even loading threaded sms views seem to take longer more so with those who have longer threaded conversations with. But even with the people I text less there seems to be a more noticeable delay than before.
At first I thought this had to do with the application itself after the update but I'm guessing it's due to having to deal with twice as many sms's as before.
So basically I'm looking for a fix to remove the duplicated messages and to speed up the stock app again which I think are interelated.
Im looking at options other than manually removing each and every sms and other than replacing the stock app with handcent or chomp.
I've also looked at the SMS backup app and played around with it and theres no option present there which says to backup sms back to my phone, it only sends it to my gmail. I havent poked enough in my gmail to see if there is some options which syncs my gmail sms back to my phone again.
Suggestions?

[Q] "Backup to Gmail" App - Does it save numbers or only names

Hey guys,
i'm currently using Backup to Gmail to backup my SMS.
However i'm a little bit confused about the way it saves the sender and receiver contacts in gmail.
i can only see the name of the sender in my gmail account sms folder - not the number.
But how about restoring the messages? And especially if there are messages from people i don't have anymore in my contact list.
Can anyone bright me up?
cheers
Maxim

Transfer contacts and texts from SIII

Hi,
How to transfer contacts and texts from Samsung SIII to the 5t? Is there a smart switch or something for non Samsung phones?
Thanks
Your contacts should be linked to your Google account. If they're on your SIM (which IDK why anyone would do these days), you can save them to your Google account on your s3, then when you sign into your Google account on your 5T, they will sync. For calls and texts I use the SMS Backup and Restore app.

Thanks about the contacts restoration, I manually copied them by creating a vcf file last night. About sms backup and restore I tried many apps, they copy each sms individually but when we restore them they are sorted wrongly i.e. not as per dates. Is there any specific app to which you are referring to? Also is there any smart switch type of app for this purpose?

Thanks. Copied contacts by creating a vcf file and then restoring the same. For messages used many apps, they copy each sms individually but after restoring them they are not sorted date wise. Is there any particular app to which you are referring to? Also any smart switch type of app for this purpose?

No prob. The name of the App is SMS Backup & Restore. Just search it in the Play store. It will batch backup all your calls and texts, then you can upload it to Google drive within the app. Search for the upload to G Drive setting in backup settings. Once complete, download the same app on ur 5T, sign in to Google drive within the app, and restore. It will warn you if you don't switch back to ur SMS app and select it as default SMS after restoring, you will not get texts until u do. It does this because it needs to be the default SMS app during restoration.
