My Android system is taking 8GB, is this normal ?
My phone is just bootloader-unlocked, but not rooted, and without any custom rom installed
Is there a way to fix this ?
Thank you

On my device the system is taking 11GB so doesn't seem unusual.
You can't change the size of system partition.
Also, there's 2 of them.
They're 2.5Gib each (on my 64Gib unit)
User data is only 51Gib. That's what you can be worried about. Updates to system apks do live on here.
I don't know what the storage tab is even counting as system... Possibly just all the partitions that you can't write to? (So they don't have to admit that your device has space you can't use).
Here's my guess...
The 64Gb is not Gib but base-10 Gb (ie. about 61Gib). Subtracting 51Gib userdata gives about 10Gib. My system is reported as 8.9Gb... Seems pretty close to me?

Indeveloper settings disable log buffer and disable tracking in system tracing option and clear saved traces. If it doesn't work, make a factory reset. If it still doesn't work, flash latest stock rom with miui flash with clean all option selected.

That's normal actually, depending on the phone and manufacturers such more features or bloatware. Considering A/B partitions, the system taking a bit more storage.

I just installed cyanogen mod 7.2 stable(It's a clean install and i have wiped every thing) following that installed the latest gapps package(gapps-gb-20110828-signed).
The market would not even load and crash constantly.
I have tried these tips:
1.Cleared data and cache (settings-> applications-> market -> Then clearing cache)
2.Wiped Dalvik cache
3.Fixed permissions.
4.Changed "language"
5.Re-installed gapps package.
All this was to no avail.
Downloaded "jelly bean" market and installed it.
Now the market would load ok but it crashes when i try to download some application. It sucks.
Any suggestion ?
Try Increase your MTD Partition if you have any... It should fix it... If not, delete your account from the settings (Accounts) and log on while opening PlayStore. Hope it helps.
Have you flashed the right Gapps? Some of the latest ones are for ICS Users and i have found they dont work.
Just google "Gapps" and then find the one without ICS
Hope this helps

Deleting the account and factory reset is not working....even installing the CM 7.2 again and again is not working.
What does it have to do with MTD partition ?I have got sufficient internal memoery as i told you that it's a clean install and I don't have any app installed on my device except custom CM apps.
What about going to Setting > Manage applications > Market > Force close
I know you may have tried it and seems silly but i had a problem updating my apps and i did this and everything seems to work. What about a reboot?
Edit: I found this temporary workaround so see if this helps!
Here is what I did:
1- go to app manager from settings,
2- uninstall the latest version of google play store
3- clear data and cache of google play store
4- install version Google Play Store v3.5.19
5- when you open the market, google will still prompt you to update to the latest version (dont continue, leave it as it is)
6- if you want to update/install the apps do it thru the browser in your phone/computer (it will straight away update in your phone)

If you have Custom MTD partition, the issue may be, you have a low space reserved for System (Where GAPPS are installed) and more for Data.
Try using 175, 15... It is sufficent enough to run smoothly.
Cheers.

Ah hell, why the hell didn't I ever think of this ?
Thanks for the life saving tip ,still not sure though if it was market version related or the system partition related.
Increased the partitons to [mtd 175 15].Market took a while, got updated to version 3.7.13 and it's working now.Really appreciate your help.
BTW,How did you figure out that [mtd 175 15] will work on "CM 7.2 Stable"?Just wondering can’t we take some more space from “system”.I have had [mtd 140 5] working well with "CM Nightly”.
Not sure how much we can take from system to flash CM 7.2 Stable but I guess we can still reduce "cache" to 5MB.

Are you sure you are running "CM 7.2 Stable" on HTC Buzz(Wildfire).
I tried [mtd 140 5] and it was causing "The application Market (process com.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly. (FORCE CLOSE)".

Try [mtd 140 20] . Like I said before reducing cache gave me force close. This configuration works fine for me. I was using cm7.2 stable since its release but now I am using lewa with the same partitions.

I found out the partition size because I also wanted more space for Data as I don't like installing apps on SD (It can easily get corrupted as you use the SD with your PC during File Transfer, etc and or malfunction as some SD cards aren't that strong and I don't trust any!). That partition made it run.
Another way you can increase your partion size is simply by taking out pre-installed apps and or ringtones/notifications, etc you feel you don't need (My style). Anyway, I run Erwin P's ICS on Wildy now while having a backup of my CM7 incase I need to use the Camera/Video app again... LOL (I haven't tried using the dual booting thing... Always speculating, say I am lazy... Will try that out someday soon).
Anyways... Glad you have your phone working now.

You say " Another way you can increase your partion size is simply by taking out pre-installed apps and or ringtones/notifications, etc you feel you don't need" I now what you mean but this doesn't increase your partition size, removing files etc from system only frees up space in the partition not increase it. Custom mtd is the only method I know to increase system partition. Regards slym.

TBH I had done enough research to fix the issue.I did what one usually would have considered good research else it shouldn't have taken more than 5 endless days and nights
Even on CM forums,Android forums and several blogs.Don't know why couldn't find your post.
Anyway,"olu.danNY's" advice helped me else i was going to ditch CM7 for some other ROM .In my opinoin there should be a thread where users can update their working MTD partitions regarding their ROMs.
Right now I am running CM 7.2 Stable with [mtd 140 15] and some other users are running it even with [mtd 130 15]. i.e cache partiton was the root of the trouble.

I also prefer removing pre-installed apps using TB but that doesn't really help you that much.
Custom MTD partition does the real rescue and you can also use "S2E" to gain more space by moving apps to Ext partition e.g games, maps.Just make sure you don't move app data to Ext.
SOLVED
P.S. Don't attempt to shrink the cache partition "too much".
Keep it(Cache) ≥ 15

YMMV - especially with CM7. It has been mentioned a few times over the forum that CM7 has a bind script which makes your whole /data partition used as cache - as long as it's activated (default) and not corrupted there shouldn't be any problems with the play store. No idea regarding other situations but I know of people running a 5MB cache partition on CM7...

Yep,I know CM7 has some sort of script that automatically moves cache to data partition if it overflows(larger than the cache size).
I have had [mtd 140 5] working well with "CM Nightly”.
No idea why it is causing trouble with CM7.2-Stable. Maybe it's lacking that script which makes it sufficent enough to run smoothly if cahce partition is <15.
hello i decided to update my nexus 7 flo to the latest stock marshmallow this morning but im in dilemma now.. as i have only 235kb memory left in my system rom. please help how to free it .. i only have atleast 10 apps installed now and i really wonder why it takes that much of memory... by the way.. my n7 flo is rooted already. please see my ss below
It's rooted, so no OTA is possible. You can only do this - and they wrote:
"Caution: Flashing a new system image deletes all user data. Be certain to first backup any personal data such as photos"
Then, what's the dilemma when you have no choice?

I`m guessing that Your Titanium backups has taken a lot of your storage.... You could go in and delete the backups You dont need?.... Also you could use Titanium to uninstall system apps...... and cleaning up the temp cache of used apps could free up some more....
I have the 16gb version and it is not alot of storage to use on it, the micro sd slot is one thing I really miss from Nexus ..... but I mostly use a usb stick for movies etc :good: ....
You could also use the cleaner script found here to free about 224mb of storage : http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7-2013/development/rom-bad-boyz-nexus-7-stock-rooted-t3219148
The stock firmware fills nearly all of system and that's ok. It's not slowing you down.
If you need more space in the system partition for some reason delete system apps with TB like mentioned above.

Ya I tried that system cleaner but it didn't work for me, I got bootloop instead.
Hi, today I decided to install LineageOS* on my old Xperia T to see how it was and I really liked it, but there is an extrange thing I've seen on my device. It has 16GB of internal storage, but according to ES Explorer it only lets me less than 2GB for my personal files (I had more or less 11GB with the stock ROM).
If I go to Settings > Storage, it says that the system uses 12,59GB, which is a lot. And if I go to the root folder with ES Explorer, select everything and open properties it says that the size of the folders is 5,10GB (with no SD Card inserted).
I don't know if did something wrong while installing or what could have caused this, I tried to reinstall LineageOS but this wasn't solved. I would be grateful if someone could help me, because if this is a problem of the OS I wouldn't install it on my personal smartphone.
I would have attached some screenshots but I don't know how to do it because I'm new in this forum. I've read that there is a button with a clip between the smiley and the undo buttons to do it, but I haven't got it.
*I installed LineageOS 14.1 with GAPPS and LineageOS su permissions to have root access.

I think it could be a failure of the system when it administrates the space, because the file manager says that the size of the folders in the root directory is 5,10GB (the system + user files), which is something normal. But in settings, system uses 12,59GB. I hope they solve it with an update or something :/
Or maybe there is a partition that hasn't be erased or cleared while installing the ROM or the recovery, but I don't think so because Xperia devices doesn't have the recovery partition, recovery is included with the OS
Yeah it should be fixed as spon as possible. Otherwise ove ported it unofficial to my galaxy tab a 9.7 but not running smooth as iam not the best in programming... ... btt: hopefully it gets fixed otherwise i uninstall it and use ressurection rom

Oh okay
I just updated LineageOS to a new version but the storage problem hasn't been solved...
And now I formatted all the partitions I could via TWRP and reinstalled it again but the same. One day, when I have time, I'll try with other ROM, just to compare...
Ops, I forget this thread. I come back to say that I returned to the original ROM and now my storage is correct, I have my 10GB aprox for my files, so the problem should be caused by LienageOS.
I don't think that I will reinstall it, now I prefer to have the official version, so I'll stop answering here.

I don't know what is being stored on your system partition because you can't mount or write to it. I do know fastboot flashing a full google image will first wipe the system partition and then re-write it directly lfrom from the image. If you edit the flash-all script beforehand your data will not be deleted. This is what many people do every month to update, including myself. Of course, if your bootloader is still locked you will have to do this first which will wipe your data.

Thank you for the suggestion. I'm not sure I know how to use SDMAID to fix this issue though. SDMAID is able to properly see the size of applications including their associated data as seen in the attached image. However, Android's storage calculation continues to not be able to see it. As seen in the attachments, the application in question has around 700 MB of data associated with it but I am not able to view or clear that data.

This is the method by which I regularly update and it has not fixed the issue for me. I don't believe that anything is actually being saved on the system partition. It's an erroneous calculation and display. For example, if I take a photo, it is still saved in the same location as before. However, the photos app will continue to show no associated data and the "system" partition will appear to grow as if the photo was added to it.
The closest similar symptom that I've been able to find on XDA (or anywhere on the web) seems to be here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/files-using-space-t3601549

I am a power user and I mostly switch a lot between apps, so I don't like discarding.
I use a custom ROM which is less heavy than MIUI ROM yet Still my background apps take a lot of memory that multitasking without discarding is not possible even with 4GB + 2GB zRAM I have.
Do you know any workaround for this without buying a new phone nor sacrificing apps, knowing that when I run cpuinfo in terminal: It doesn't show swp in features, so I don't think the swap will work out of the box with me and using a swap partition in my SD card will make the phone slow also except if there is a way to partition the internal storage or /data.
