Mate 20 speaker volume after EMUI 9.1 update - Huawei Mate 20 Questions & Answers

After updating my phone to 9.1, the loudness of the speaker sounds like it is muted because of how tiny it sounds when gaming. Anyone else experiencing this and how to fix?

It was on 9.0 trash and it's the same on 9.1

I just wish there was a way to make the bottom and top speakers sound balanced.

Base Setting For Audio?

When watching videos through the browser...there is hardly any bass(using the speaker). Is there a way to add base? Like if a guy is talking on the video his voice sounds tiny rather than full.
This tab has very very poor default sound settings, If you are not using viperfx or a modified kernel which has some eq settings it sound very poor in terms of bass
Not a lot you can with such tiny speakers, the speakers stereo on my HTC M7 phone are amazing so it can be done.
You can try Viper as mentioned above as long as you are not on android 5+ , A few Tab S owners say it works great.

I'm on Android 5.0.2 and I have Viper installed and working.
Yeah, I know it can be done, but it`s supposed to be a bit more difficult to do than with pre 5.0 , if you have a guide, can you post it for other owners, unless it`s wildly known.

Sound Quality on Nougat Based ROMs

Hi Everyone,
Is it just me or the sound quality after updating to Nougat has really gone down (that we need upgrades like A.R.I.S.E or Divine beats?). Earlier I noticed that we used to have a simple mod for any sound i.e. Viper4Android, which is still MOTHER OF ALL SOUND MODs for me .
I noticed that the audio playback is having VERY MUFFLED bass through my home theatre system over the same bluetooth connection while playing with MM ROM. I tried rolling back to MM and things work perfectly. I wish to stay on Nougat for obvious advantages of the newer UI, better battery & performance but would still like to see if anyone can port the lib from MM to N?
I don't essentially want to install ARISE or Divine Beats; for me Viper4Android is just fine and I would love if it works just the way it used to on MM.
PS: I bought my home theatre after tweaking Viper v2.5.0.5 on MM and the same is not working after updating to N.... any help is appreciated.

The sound libraries have DEFINITELY changed in the system which are truly worse than Marshmallow!
I certainly need someone's help in getting them Ported back or else I have no other option other than rolling back to MM (since I spend 4-5 hrs/day on music). :crying:

Viper4Android and Divine beats/A.R.I.S.E are completely different. Divine beats and arise change your music first without you going into the app to change things. When I installed freedomOS with Divine beats, I notice my bass was extremely overpowered and everything just sounded like crap.... I really don't understand people's music choices sometimes. All these sound mods just make the phone sound like crap, especially since the OP3 already has a much warmer profile, meaning the bass and highs are very pronounced from the box

Exactly my point.
Even though the sound out of box was very good, using Viper4Android would take it to the next level. But Divine/A.R.I.S.E fiddle too much and extort the audio.
Marshmallow sound libraries were literally awesome and V4A on top of it would just make it mind blowing. Don't know how to get that same experience without going back from Nougat. :'(

Well you can install freedomOS without the Divine beats and what not, install Blu_spark kernel and set it to SElinux to permissive. Then you can install Viper4Android on its own and you'll have some nice audio.

I strongly recommend against this. Just install Magisk or use something that comes with Magisk preinstalled and install the Viper4Android from the Magisk repo / Magisk module. There is also one for Dolby Atmos. That way you don't have to mess with SELinux or modify system files.
Nah...Didn't go well.
Still the same sound quality. Muffled and garbled.
I have the EXACT same issue. I can't believe OnePlus went ahead and did this. Who do I tell?
I have great sound...experienceos + viper4arise with magisk. Install permissive script for magisk to avoid overheating issues. Dont tinker to much in viper . This is my speaker setting its loud and very clear. I love it.

I beg to differ from your opinion here though.
After trying out 4 different Nougat based ROMs and 4 different Marshmallow based ROMs (yeah....took a lot of time with clean installation and stuff), I easily infer that OP3 Nougat ROMs have REALLY POOR sound libraries. Viper4Android alone works well with Marshmallow based ROMs (and using it with A.R.I.S.E/Divine Beats/etc. makes it even better) and bass doesn't distort at all (saved a few Viper Profiles and re-used them between ROMs). But the same profile in Viper on Nougat sounds just CRAP!!
Don't know what the solution here. Just wish there was some way to find out what is it that is causing this to happen? Which part of sound library or which file? Can anyone help?

Stereo Surround Mod for Oneplus 5T

I can see there is a mod ported from 3T to 5 that allows the phones earpiece to work as a second sound speaker when playing music.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/themes/stereo-speaker-mod-oos-t3632980
Anyone knows if this would work on 5T?
is not a good idea. The above loudspeaker is not designed for it.
It should be fine. I’m not looking to make the sound louder, overstressing the earpiece. Just some small treble to make you hear stereo. Anyone able to port the MOD?
I just tried this mod by swapping the xml file and it worked.
But I don't keep it as the file is smaller than the stock one.
Plus it's designed for OP5, not 5T
I revert back to stock, waiting for a clean port !
Just to mention, the speaker was way louder than the earpiece, making the sound not really balanced.
A few persones ask in the OP5 thread how to change the volume of the earpiece, or if it's possible to change the steps of the volume like this :
25% speaker = 50 % earpiece
50% speaker = 70 % earpiece
75% speaker = 100% earpiece
100% speaker = 100% earpiece
to have a more balanced sound (except for 100% of course)
and lastly it would be cool to have a quick way to disable the mod, in case of high volume during a long period, to prevent earpiece damage.
It would be really, really cool if a dev could do this.
Thanx a lot in advance !

So based on your post, the mixer file is in the same place but it's smaller, and the Oneplus mod worked for you, that means the lines inside for the speaker mod are good.
Can you send me the 5T original mixer file? My phone will get to me tomorrow, but I can merge the 5T file with the Oneplus 5 changes (keep full content of 5T and add only the changes from 5)
EDIT: Regarding the volume, I would not mess with that very much. I think you can use Viper4 to control it, but I would suggest to remove the Bass and increase the gain with maximum 10 percent. You should be on the safe side (not breaking your earpiece) and also gain some sound. (bass from bottom speaker and treble/small mid from earpiece)
Here it is, thank you !
Btw, I don' think Viper can do anything about that.
In fact, this mod only replicate what the main speaker is playing, doing dual mono.
So if I change something with Viper, it will do it for both, right ?
Or am I completely wrong ?

Here is the modded 5T file. I don't have the phone yet to test it, but will let you know as soon as I do.
I am not sure about Viper4, but I think it has independent controls for bottom speaker and top speaker, I might be wrong.
Not work with Viper.

Greaaat, I will tell you in a couple of hours
Okay, it works !
But :
It only works on Youtube, that's a start ! That's the main reason I need both speakers so I'm happy
anyway
As I say before it would be cool to have a bit more volume for the earpiece. Do you know what line I need to edit in the xml ?
And about Viper, I don't see what I can do with it, as the app is not designed to support settings for stereo speaker. I mean, no settings for one specifically.
But thanx a lot to you and DorianX, it's really cool
Edit : Well I searched in the XML and edit the "91" volume to "100". It's really better !
Edit 2 : I was wrong ! The earpiece works in chrome and other apps too. It's weird because, in some games like Super Mario Run, the earpiece works correctly, but in other games like Monument Valley 2, it doesn't
Did you tried using Viper4android? (Disabling then enabling again), also try with Universal deep_buffer Remover: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-universal-deepbuffer-remover-t3577067
Anyone want to write a how to?
This is the only thing I really miss from my old iPhone 7+
I'm assuming rooting is required etc.

very loud background noise on all custom roms

Has anyone noticed a strong background noise that distorts the sound on custom firmwares? It is easy to see when one sound sounds, and after it a pause, as, for example, in the track martin phipps - st petersburg. The first three sounds on custom firmware sound like electronic slaps, if the volume is less than half. on miui at any volume everything is fine. Will sound libs from miui help if they are moved to custom firmware?
Have you install viperfx or other soundfx?

Can anyone tell which sound libraries from miui to transfer to custom firmware and to what folder? Here is an example of libraries for xiaomi redmi note 3 pro, but on our device it does not work. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MnTmOYSrR_ZxB2GGjxWvog62vpHakdwH/view?usp=sharing
