This is for g5s+ but the g5+ shouldn't be left far behind
Interested in knowing if the kernel is updated to 64 bit or else this update would be utterly useless to developer community apart from camera blobs.

It will still be 32 bit. But we need those blobs yes.
Hmm, having seen no soak tests from either the G5S Plus or the G5 Plus, June may seem a little optimistic. When Motorola was testing the Oreo soak test for the Z Play, they also released the update notes for the Oreo update: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=75464851&postcount=181 However, it still was 1-2 months before official OTA deployment.
Whilst it's good to get excited about major updates, I'd still temper expectations until the OTA actually comes out.

So long as you're prepared for the possibility of major, possibly device breaking bugs and having to be very careful if you wanted to downgrade back to Nougat (we've got enough bricked devices as it is)... It should be fun, just be careful
A jump is nice. Directly to 8.1 Let's see how much time it would take
I disagree that we will see an upgrade in June... Let's break it down a bit as to why:
Honestly, look at the history of the Oreo upgrade for the G5S+, it has been in beta/soak for almost 5 months. It started in late January, I can provide references but Google will work easily enough here if you don't believe me, and there are verified users getting the initial beta in early February. Although I haven't seen a screenshot of the released version, I am told it has the May security update, meaning the final build was likely early to mid-May... So conservatively that process took 4 months from initial beta test to release.
OK, so a tad longer than most Moto upgrades, but not uncommon as anywhere from 30 to 100 days from initial beta/soak to release is normal. We have seen this process be no shorter than 30 days, although 60 would be "typical", but we have seen it take in excess of 8 months (in the case of Nougat for the Moto X Style/Pure before full release, for example).
Now jump to our device, the G5+... there is no confirmed users with a beta or soak yet, not even semi-substantiated or reputable rumors of it occurring yet in ANY market. Not even confirmation of MFN users getting emails to sign up for the beta test. Plug in the previous numbers and we are looking at a release no earlier than late July, but most likely in September and possibly even later.
Again, this is all guess work and looking at history and my personal knowledge through having Moto devices for a very long time, so I could be wrong... in fact, I hope I am wrong.
Plus, let's not forget this device is already 15 months old (released March 2017), and this puts Oreo release at an age of 18+ months, something Lenovo's Moto has done before for devices this age, but also at an age they have cancelled upgrades (not updates) on other devices at this age as well. Although I don't think they will cancel it, it is a remote possibility to keep in mind.
Just my 2 cents worth... take it as you wish.
Oreo 8.1 now rolling out for the G5S Plus.
We can't be too far behind.

Just curious, what have you seen to show the rollout is happening? I've not seen any OTA reports and the update page for the 8.1 Oreo was taken down (or I can't access it at any rate).
Just Google it (moto g5s plus oreo) and see all the reports from the last 12 hours. Eg BGR, Android Police
https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/05/30/android-8-1-oreo-rolling-moto-g5s-plus/
Edit : seems like the articles reference a Motorola update info page that has since been taken down.
Perhaps it went up prematurely?!
Now...G5s plus got...New maintainance release note ...which is not oreo...its a june security patch update

well, at least we know that the 8.1 release note was for a soak test.. so oreo is on it's way and as soon as the soal test leaks you all will be able to install it
Now the thing is what is going to happen with the G5 plus non S?

*Maybe coming*
Unfortunately, we have seen these "release notes" posted many times and the associated update never appears on devices.
But since we won't get Oreo for several months, if at all, we will probably see the update.
Oreo will never come to the G5+ due to Oreo being 64bit only (which the G5+ is not), sorry guys...
The G5S+, on the other hand, will have the Oreo update indeed!

I'm confused by this statement about Oreo being only 64 bit - the Moto Z Play (also with the Snapdragon 625) got an update to Oreo (v8.0), which was a 32 bit update... https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/8632026 https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76277398&postcount=28 https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76277699&postcount=29
As I understand it, the G5 Plus, G5S Plus and the Z Play have the same 64 bit capable CPU, just with a 32 bit stock ROM, unless something changed?

Oreo is able to run on 32bit systems, as you quoted, it does on the Z Play. As changing from 32 to 64bit needs a complete wipe no OEM will change that with an OTA update. Motorola knew what devices are running which OS and they wouldn't have announced Oreo for Moto G5 and G5+.
Some people just don't have the correct informations.
Sent from my Moto G5 Plus using XDA Labs
Sometimes I wonder that Moto is treating G5 plus differently than G5S plus but both the phones are basically the same (IMO), the only difference being the screen size and the dual camera setup and thus will update G5 plus after updating the special edition G5S plus, if this happens, I'm pretty sure we won't be seeing Oreo till the end of September, maybe November.
This is just an assumption and I'm not saying that it's correct but I just hope it's not and Moto will release a patch note for G5 plus Oreo update soon.

by the month of november all our warranties will be over and custom rom's bugs will probably be all fixed.. also treble is in a good development state, so we would not need support from motorola anymore.. i don't think it's worthed waiting that long..
I've been using pixel experience for a couple of months but i think lineage os is a little snappier so i decided to switch back but I can't find the official build for it anymore, the device is nowhere to be found in the supported device list. Is this the end?!!
Yes. Maybe they will move to redmi note 7/7 pro.
They sure dropped this phone fast, its not even a year old. And besides the RN4 is still supported but not the 5? WTF
And theres still no global RN7 version either so why the rush.
One reason could be that many developers of this phone got an upgrade to flagship level phones like Pocophone F1. I'm assuming the official Lineage OS developer was one of them, which may have affected the update intervals and features with time. Maybe that's why the Lineage OS team chose not to keep this phone on their list. (Unless if a developer invests their skills and time on this).
Also, Lineage OS also didn't stand out that much in this device's forum because of Custom ROMs like Pixel Experience, HAVOC, AOSIP, and OEM ROMs like Oxygen OS and Samsung Experience. These developers have contributed so much that Lineage OS was not really needed that much. (Please Thank these developers on the forums and donate, if you can. They really have worked hard on this)
I could be wrong but it must be related to either of these things.
???
Does anyone has the last official build? is not on the official page anymore
Essentially this phone reached its 3rd years anniversary. It doesn't seems there's much ROM development going anymore.
I tried to look if the G5 and G5 Plus ROM are interchangeable. I can't find a concrete answer, but some threads suggested their hardware change render the ROM are not interchangeable due to different device driver.
Is it safe to say the Moto G5 Plus ROM development is finally coming to its end?
I do not think it will arrive yet, the problem is that the Moto G5 Plus is a phone stagnant in what is development in roms, Many communities and groups in Telegram have tried to achieve those that few have achieved, Install GSIs in the G5 Plus, If it ever succeeds, the safest thing is that the development of roms and GSIs will be as great as the beginning.

I've been tearing my hair out trying to find a phone in the Australian market that is or should soon be compatible with LineageOS.
The G8 looked like a good candidate, and I'm happy to be a bet of an alpha tester or risk some issues (perhaps even help if I can), but the local ones seem to be XT2045-6 and I can only find people talking about the XT2045-1 and XT2045-2. Should I expect these to be very different, if a ROM works on the 1 and 2 should I expect it to work not at all, with some bugs or almost complete compatability?

Generally, they are usually the same, except for
radio stuff like apns, carrier apps/bloatware, and some other things that custom roms don't overwrite.
There can be differences in NFC, memory size, dual sim, other sensors...
So a custom rom may not support a sensor you have, but shouldn't brick your device.
I suggest downloading a copy of your current firmware, even if the rom is for your exact model.
LMSA is the easiest, but you should also look at flashing manually with fastboot.exe

Thanks heaps. After doing a bit more research I'm now torn between this, a Redmi Note 8 on deep discount, or saving up for a fairphone.
