Alright, I am buying pixel 2 xl from market, I am really skeptical of buying a Refurbished. I request you to tell me a method to identify a refurbished pixel phone
Samsung phones has Phone info app which checks whether its refurbished or not, but pixel doesnt have app like that
- The market donot sell phones in boxes as it subside to import duties in my country so that tactic is no go.
- The ones I saw had little to no wear which could be sign of refurb but it could also be used.
Is there any app or RTN menu option for pixel devices to actually check refurb status
You might want to check the warranty, it should be 2 years for a new phone.

Dont buy refurbs, most refurbs are Verizon models that have been turned into Verizons insurance broker and then sold on the market as "unlocked" Pixel 2s. They have no difference in model number, serial number, or specs however the Verizon units have locked bootloaders and should be avoided at all costs

Does that interfere with daily usage like camera, performance or something? Considering they are really cheap, a no to bootloader unlocking is fine( i can get pixel 2 xl 9.5/10 in 300 bucks approx). They claim it to be non refurb... Thats the reason I wanted to identify if its refurb or not. I know i m mixing two opinions.
Lets divide it into two
Q1: Is refurb pixel 2 xl not worth buying in 300 bucks?
Q2: How to identify a refurb

An unlocked bootloader is the reason why this phone is worth it.

Guys i dont know whether that phone is refurb, is there something I can do to check that? Can I use fastboot to check that?
Can I use imei number to check a refurb?
The phone isnt new, nor it has OEM box.. its just a phone. There must a method.
And is there any menu to check every component of phone whether its working or not, whether the components are original. Well you get my point, just suggest me any way to inspect a device, i am fine with bootloader being locked( Stock OTA )
The bootloader lock will not hinder daily performance, and because of it you can both get the phone reasonably cheap and be able to do most things a rooted user can do. However I feel $300 is too much for a Verizon P2XL. You may want to check Swappa instead as you can probably get an unlocked model for around the same price with known provenance.
You were already told to avoid refurbs simply because they most likely are Verizon, but that doesn't really answer your question. There's no way known to check whether the device has been refurbished or not. The information parsed from an IMEI won't tell you if the device has been refurbished.

Pretty much clarifies all the points. Really thanks for that. I have a few questions. Would be glad if you answer
Q1: Are all refurb verizon( I searched over internet, all refurbs were bootloader *locked* which should correspond to verizon)
Q2: Does pixel 2 xl have Hardware defects like the hairline crack on microphone soldering in pixel 1, which could make it un usable?
And the country I live doesnt have swappa but i can order it through one of my cousin in US. Some units have less blue shift and screen issues than others, if I buy from market, I can inspect that myself, while on swappa, I could be unlucky to get one with high blue shift.
The question is, whether its better to buy MINT condition from Swappa or from market ( your personal opinion) and can I check all the components using hidden menu like on sammy phones.( Battery health, Screen check).

Edit: Swappa also contain verizon Pixel 2 xl as unlocked pixel 2 xl as they can work as GSM unlocked device but *not* bootloader unlocked devices. They have that bootloader locked
The one I am getting has GSM unlocked, which is pretty much what i want, and I dont care about bootloader lock.

In the link above you will see both unlocked and Verizon devices. Swappa therefore defines unlocked as "able to unlock the bootloader". It also confirms that $300 is way too much for a Verizon device.
I can't stop you from wasting your money, but be assured that based on price alone the item you're looking at is a bad deal. You can clearly do better.
Regarding your other questions, there is a possibility a refurb may not be Verizon, but do you want to take the chance? I'm not aware of manufacturing defects like on OG Pixels.

So with the Pixel phone being sold through Verizon here in the US, do you think this phone will be fully unlocked if bought from them?
Wow, that is expensive... and sold out...
Didn't get one, but want the 128 GB (though I wish they offered a 64GB).
Add the protection plan for another $100, sitting at close to $1000!
Holy cow... I am going to need to sell a kidney.

Being it's Verizon I would say very likely but I am sure it will get cracked at least until new updates remember this is Verizon your talking about they love to be in control of things that they have no right to be. Easy fix don't buy from Verizon buy from Google or if you can buy from HTC as they will treat you better in the long run like the $100 in free accessories they gave the HTC 10 buyers after we got an extra free USB-C charge cable months before and maybe uh oh protection might be included too but that is hoping lol.
Is there any downsides from purchasing from google vs Verizon? Will we get access to the same LTE bands, etc.?
In the past, have google versions of phones have come with unlocked bootloaders but verizon come with locked versions of the same devices?

Given the way the past Nexus devices (that included support for Verizon and were eventually sold through them) the answer is no. They use the exact same hardware presumably. But until we start seeing model numbers confirmed it could be a possibility. But the unlocked version will support Verizon and it will have Google as your main access for support (which has been good to some people in the past).

The only reason I'd consider buying it straight from Verizon is because it would be added onto my bill in which my job would end up paying for my phone. If I buy it from the PlayStore i'd have to buy it on my own.
I think I'm going to end up with a Note 7.

I'm in that boat as well, work will pay for my phone if I get it through Verizon. Here's hoping that I can in some way sell the Verizon phone NIB and buy the unlocked one.
If you get it from Verizon they are offering the promotion 2 year contract again exclusively for this phone. So you can get the pixel 128gb for like $300....but it might be bootloader locked and you won't get the free vr headset promo the Google store is offering right now.

Oh that's it. Anyone on a contract can keep getting new contracts like that. But new customers cannot get a contract from Verizon directly. You can still get service through Verizon with a new contract and subsidised phone you just have to purchase the Verizon service through dealers like best buy and target I know they both list new Verizon service with a contract where you get the phone subsidised instead of a payment plan or paying full retail price for the phone.

Yeah, but it took well over a year to unlock the verizon S5 (at least. I hadn't looked for another year, so it might have been over 2). It'll be cracked Eventually but how long will it take
I'm not too worried about the bootloader being locked as I've stopped rooting my phones and flashing ROMS but I just need to know if the Verizon model has all the bands to work properly on t-mobile. I have 2 sims and need to confirm this.
Bootloader is definitely locked. Saw this question/answer on the VZW Page this morning for the Pixel XL.
I just preordered the pixel xl from best buy and extended my contract with Verizon. Does anybody know if the version they carry is the same as Verizon's or the unlocked version in the play store?

Just wondering. Why are so many of you buying from Verizon & BestBuy instead of Google?
You do realize the phones not purchased from Google will have a locked bootloader. So why would you buy from Verizon or BestBuy instead of Google, who has the same price and you can use either phones on Verizon if you so choose to do so.
I don't want to say ya'll are dumb, but I kind of feel this way.
I'm sure there is something I'm missing though, so help me understand please.
Are the payment plan options the same? If so that might be one reason. I have Verizon because that's what my employer (who pays for the phone and the bill) uses.

Believe it or not, not everyone needs a bootloader unlocked these days. My days of tinkering with Android are over as I feel Android is better than ever. It is unfortunate the OP feels that I am dumb because everyone doesn't agree with his way of thinking...
It was also cheaper to purchase from Verizon for a new 2 year cobtract
Sent from my Pixel using XDA-Developers mobile app
I personally ordered mine from Verizon due to my work account, and also don't care about root or unlocked boot loaders since I haven't needed either in several years. That being said I also believe many people have not been buying directly from Google because Google hasn't been able to keep them in stock. Which of course also implies that many people are buying them from Google, lol.
Best Buy is cheaper with a 2 year agreement ($299.99) as well as a 24 month installment ($31 a month), for 32GB version.
Also, best buy is giving a $100 gift card, which you can do whatever you want with. (resell it, use it, etc).
If you are only keeping the phone for two years, and don't care about updates after that, then its probably a better route. After two years, you are SOL for getting an up to date OS.
I had the note 7....the last return I just upgraded to the pixel xl. In exchange So....through Verizon it was.
Its an economic decision for me. In Germany I'll get the Device from T-Mobile Germany for 179€ (around 197 US$) for the renewal of my contract - I think this ist much better than the 1097€ direct from Google. The only downside is that it will have a locked bootloader...I'm still hoping someone finds a way to unlock the bootloaders of the Devices wich doesnt come directly from Google.
I ordered mine from Verizon. I haven't rooted a phone in a long time so locked or unlocked bootloader doesn't really matter for me.

I have my phone rooted for Tasker and Xposed, but the Verizon phone can effectively be considerably cheaper right now.

Best Buy will currently give a $100 gift card if you don't want a new line, a $200 gift card for a new line, another $25 for a sign-up will be available after the pre-order is over, and it can be done with monthly payments to allow porting out or cancelling the line. Verizon has phone trades that total $200-$300, which is done through reduced monthly payments, and my Razr M qualified for $200. Some people have other options on Verizon. Google does not offer similar sort of ways to essentially reduce the phone's cost at this time.

Personally I question the idea of paying iPhone 7 prices, and since I'm not interested in the VR headset, that's basically what initial Google store customers are doing. As much as I like what Tasker can do with root, I'm not sure it's worth giving up automatic updates and effectively spending another $175 that I could have with $225 in Best Buy gift cards. If it turns out that there are limitations on the Verizon phones for anything other than the bootloader unlock, I'll probably change my opinion, but at this time it looks like Google's bottom-line price is considerably higher than what is possible at Verizon.
Purely inventory for me. Google shipments are a month or more out. They won't even take my money to pre-order it. VZW device I can have in 3 days.

Buying it as a contract renewal over Deutsche Telekom is way cheaper for me, especially because I work there and get a monthly discount on the main contract.
I have to 29,95€ monthly instead of 64,95€ and get the Pixel XL 128 GB for 279,95€ on time fee.
But even the phone for my wife is way cheaper. I paid 19,95€ for here family card without a phone before, now we upgraded it to a contract with phone to 29,95€ a month and also 279,95€ for the small Pixel 32 GB.
Yes, I would also love to have a unlockable bootloader and instant updates from Google but after not rooting phones for a couple of years I will get along with it.
I wanted the one from the google store but didn't feel like waiting for it. I would like to have the bootloader unlocked just for the option but i haven't had time or need to mess with rooting and custom roms, so just having pure android is perfect for me. So for me it made sense to just order from Verizon, everyone has different needs or reasons and i would say for 90% of the people buying this phone has no need to ever unlock the bootloader or even know much about that world of roms and rooting. I thinks its a stretch to insinuate people are dumb for having a choice and choosing one over the other

I ordered from Verizon because I was able to trade in an old phone for monthly device credit. It should save me $100-200 depending on how long I stay on Verizon DPP. I preordered one from the Google Play Store as well. I don't plan on opening the box from the play store unless the Verizon model upsets me and needs to be returned.

Whats the point of buying two then? Everything about the Verizon version is the same except for boot loader.....
Buying it directly from Verizon because
1) My job will be paying for it
2) I feel once I have stock Android I don't really need to have root or an unlocked bootloader.
3) Don't have to wait until it comes back in stock via the playstore.
Major discount through employee. 419 vs 869 for xl 128gb and plus availability. Still waiting though as I want to see if anyone cracks that Verizon bootloader within the first month.

I am planning on keeping the Verizon Pixel because it is cheaper for me. As more reviews and info come out that is ACTUALLY reputable, I want to be able to return it to Verizon within the first 2 weeks if I decide there are significant differences between the Verizon version and the Google Play version. If I do that, I want to have the Google Play store Pixel in a box ready for me to switch over. This way I also get to take advantage of the Daydream VR, no matter which device I return.
Since the announcement on October 4th, there has not been any real credible information about the Pixel. Everything has been "so and so said this... Don't buy the Verizon version... etc." Then every Android blog site just blindly regurgitates what was said as if it was real news. NO ONE fact checks. Some CSR at Verizon who doesn't know what a freaking bootloader even is said something, then everyone freaks out and android headlines and forums go crazy. Then someone at Google says something else and everyone takes that as the truth. Does anyone even look at where the info came from? The only group I believe at all at this time is Google Pixel team. If they didn't say it or someone cannot show me in a video with their phone in their hand, I'm not going to believe it.
As long as I am confident that the Verizon pixel will get updates straight from Google when Google promises (just like what I'm used to with Nexus), I don't see a convincing reason not to go with Verizon. I would like the ability to unlock the bootloader so that I can flash the factory images if that promise is not kept. With every new version of Android, I find less need to try custom roms. With what I have seen from 7.1, I don't think I will even have the urge.

I don't think you're dumb at all.
XDA is all about development, I guess I'm still surprised when there are people here who don't care about flashing ROM's or backing up in TWRP and even some who apparently don't care about root any longer.
If I didn't care about flashing ROM's (or root), I'd be on a S7 Edge right now.

So much this right here. They said this about the Verizon N6 also. That everything would be locked down and look what happened. Nothing was locked down at all. I ordered the Verizon Pixel XL because of this also and i dont really need root anymore. If i am able to root its a plus but not a deal breaker for me.

Yes, I also am grumpy and pissed at google for messing up the "orders / pre-orders". Year after year, they keep screwing up on the first step. They "could" have manufactured an extra 50, 000 and it would not have hurt their economics and it would have greatly helped their public image. Did the 'Note 7' burn put a snag in things ?
.
What if the "big and detailed" reviews start coming in and it shows a narley wart about the phone ? ? ? My biggest, desired attribute is the big leap in the camera ( camcorder ? ) area . . .
im just wondering if there is anyone still trying to find a way to unlock the bootloader or root the xt1635 01, i have had the phone for months and refuse to update it in case a working root method comes out for a specific update. the phone is starting to slow down and android isn't the same to me without root. along with that, verizon and all the stupid bloatware are still a huge issue for me. (even though it always has been) i want to know if development has stopped or not, if it has, i plan to buy the moto x4 or wait until the x5 comes out and will be making sure it is factor unlocked. #verizonsucks

The funny part is, for example, a Verizon Moto e4 prepaid can be had for very little money (got my daughter's brand new on sale at Target for $40 a while back). It will likely never be bootloader unlocked or rooted - which would have fairly little to do with the users choice of carrier. However, for a couple bucks on eBay there are carrier unlock codes for it - bye bye Verizon, your $40 phone works just fine on my ATT postpaid SIM...

That make sense. For $40 I'd deal with carrier, but not for $500 ones. It is just about preference & experience. I had some bad experience with carrier so for me it's a no no.
And my point is that I will never buy a carrier's phone, that is for me and should you? That's your decision to make.

Agreed. I finally got sick of locked down phones as ATT got worse about it. Had root and unlock on my Aria, S2 and LGOG that were ATT branded, but after my S6 and the crap with that, went the unbranded route. Still with ATT, but having the option to walk as soon as a better deal comes along is nice.
Sucks coming up with cash upfront for a phone, but mid rangers are good enough for me now, so not as bad as it could be.

Man, couldn't agree more on that. I think we are gone too far out of topic. Time to disappear
Conclusion is, you're more likely will not be able to unlock bootloader on that phone. Bye bye magisk
I just got off of the phone with Verizon Support after the proximity sensor on my Pixel 2XL started acting up. They told me that it is under warranty, but that they have no Pixel 2XLs to issue for warranty replacement. She offered a Samsung Galaxy S8+, which I quickly declined. She then said that they would have to issue a Pixel as a no-cost upgrade in order to get me a replacement. Has anyone else run into anything like this? I'm also wondering if the replacement Pixel will be locked to Verizon, or if I would be able to unlock the BL. Waiting on my corporate office to call Verizon and approve the replacement now...
Sounds like a load of BS to me. I've NEVER had a carrier tell me that they don't have any warranty replacement devices. I've heard of it happening and upgrading to the newer version of whatever phone though. Anyway, you should definitely call and speak to someone different, maybe even escalate it. Also, besides that it's BS they are trying to use an upgrade, your new phone upgrade will likely start over as well.
I just got my Verizon pixel 2xl warranty replaced 1 week ago to the day. I told them my phone would lag and freeze and I would have to restart it Everytime I wanted to listen to Spotify and get navigation direction is Google maps.
I wonder if they have a different inventory for corporate or if it is just a load of BS? Either way, waiting for my replacement to arrive. Maybe I'll get lucky and be able to unlock the BL.
I didn't even go through Verizon for a replacement, I called google up and got a google pixel 2 xl

Once Verizon stops selling a device. This is the correct policy. You should get a pixl 3 if they stop pixel 2xl. Provided you insist pixel product as you have. Bootloader however will be subject to Verizon terms and conditions. So expect it to be locked. If it's locked and your old device was factory unlocked-original device is paid off and they do not work with you. You can always contact Google and try to see if support will help. Sadly if you accept a device from Verizon. Expect bootloader to be locked. No one will really know until you have the device. If you opt you don't like it. 14 day policy I believe at Verizon. ----fyi replacement doesn't wipe balance owed on prior esn. Terms still need to be met for financial obligations on prior devices linked to the agreement on the defective device before they will unlock.
As in. Buy on 01/1/2021 pixl 2. Warranty replacement 02/1/2021 out of stock replacement/$0.00 upgrade you then early upgrade pixel 3a. You then pay full retail to unlock 3a but you traded 02/01/21 device and it had $0.00 but 2xl had 24 months @ $20.00 you have to lay any balance on 2xl then pay off 3a
They tend the roll over extra weeks into new agreements on upgrades. Watch your bill.
Also good to Note. Verizon payoff policy. You must have any vzw device bought on post pay plans on the plan for 90 days before they will unlock Sim-bootloader anything- defined in terms at sale under fraud prevention. Read ur terms.
VZW will only warranty device THEY sell you.
In my decades of VZW experience you cannot warranty a;
1) device VZW did not sell you
2) a Google carrier unlocked device
via VZW warranty as you did not buy their device, and they only provide your network/data services.
But ANY device you get from VZW (warranty, payment plan, purchase) will NOT have the option to unlock the bootloader.
My pixel 2xl taimen. Is VZw paid but w/factory Unlock and never had a issue after OEM warranty and plan payment paid off getting them to unlock the device. It's all device dependent from VZW. Not all and almost all are locked. You have to research this information before you buy.
Hello everyone, let's share information and experience here to find a way to unlock the bootloader on these phones

You are mistaken, almost all phones that are considered stolen or lost were actually simply not paid. The first owner uses the phone for several months, and then, in order not to pay, he begins to trick ... He writes a statement that his phone was stolen, but in fact he is selling his phone to buy used phones. Further, the seller of used phones sells these phones via the Internet site (without describing what problems he has). And what’s the result? A poor guy from Africa bought himself such a phone and got into a bad situation, he cannot use it, although he paid money for it. I just want to find help for such people with their bad phones.
There are basically two choices.
1) Get the service provider to unlock the phone. If it has been blacklisted, they are never going to unlock it. Better move on to option 2.....
2) Use some sort of third party SIM card "unlocking" service. These are notoriously risky. Some may work, but many do not. Personally I cannot give any recommendations because I have never used a service like that.

Here is something most people do not know about a black listed phone.. If the original owner say, did not fully pay for it, then sold it anyway.. The new owner has to pay all fees including late fees, past due monthly bills in order to have the phone removed from the black list.. How do I know? Because it happened to me once.
