A50 dead and/or unresponsive - Samsung Galaxy A50 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I've been reading a lot about the A50 and some cases of A50 becoming unresponsive / dead, from what i read, black screen and seeming as powered off. Are they defective units, have the problem been solved trough softwares updates. Do you think it's HW related? I was thinking on going to A50 but i need a phone to be always available (at least to answer calls). Thanks in advance for all your help.

You think a50 is the only phone who ever died?

No, and not by a long chance, but i have an s7, and previous and s5 neo, on which it never happened. I know this ins't S series but at least i expected more quality. Mostly i wanted to know if it is too frequent or not and hw/sw related.

Yes, it's the hardware and all of our a50 died on here.

I've got Sudden Death Syndrome... now what?

I've got all the symptoms for SDS and I downloaded the eMMC check app which says I have an insane chip. I'm on the current firmware (4.1.2), so that didn't fix it for me.
How can I contact Samsung about this issue? I bought this phone from an Amazon seller.
This app only detects your hardware. It means that even if you apply a fix this app always tells you that you are insafe...
If you have an official firmware released since February, 2013 you are SAFE.
Why do you think that you have all the symptoms of SDS?
I have similar problems with my GT-N7100 which I bought from Newegg.com last November (British unit). The phone often freezes, reboots and I believe once turned itself off. Those symptoms happen several times a day and I consider this phone to be unusable at this time.
There is no US warranty and I have no clue whether anything can be done and by whom. Is this phone reparable? If yes, which outfit can do it?

Thanks for the response.
My phone is 6 months old now. It freezes and must be rebooted very often now, usually a matter of minutes. This even happens in safe mode.
I am running Perseus - alpha32 kernel, which I believe should include Samsung's SDS fix

Yeah Perseus kernel has the SDS's fix since January, 2013 so without being sure I don't think the SDS can arrive if you have this protection.
A clean installation of your system may solves your problem.
You can also try to update your firmware via OTA or Odin flash.

I saw that i have an insane chip and then your comment calmed me down :good:
If you use Perseus, reckon you're safe. Does it still exhibit SDS symptoms? I wouldn't worry, you'd be better off letting it die and getting the motherboard replaced anyways.

How do you replace the motherboard? Who does it - would you know of a contact?
Thanks.

Yes, it still has the SDS symptoms with Perseus alpha-32. I updated to Perseus alpha-36 today, but the symptoms persisted even in safe mode. I've done a factory reset and everything is okay for now, but I'm worried that it will definitely be back. I suppose I should sent it off to Samsung just to be sure?

Let it die then. Don't try too hard to prolong SDS. It's still under warranty right? You should get a replacement easily.

What symptoms have you got - if you 're flashing ROMS/Kernels then how can it be SDS. As I understand it SDS means that your phone is a brick. Just because it's freezing or rebooting doesn't mean it's SDS - could be many things

Unfortunately my phone is an international version, purchased last November from newegg.com with 90 day warranty. So I need an independent technician or lab to fix it and I have no clue where to start.

16gb or 32 gb
Rampant reboots and freezes are also symptoms of a badly coded app, a faulty memory card, a bug in a custom kernel, a bug in a custom rom, a dying sim card, malware, a bad flash.. You get the point

Apologies for alarming terminology. Here is the definition of SDS I've gone by:
The Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) issue is caused by a buggy firmware (low level machine code) on the emmc of devices, specifically, a 16GB VTU00M chip with firmware revision 0xf1. The phone dies when trying to write data to an affected block. Samsung has issued a temporary fix to avoid sudden death but this is not a permanent solution. It causes a device freeze or lock-up when attempting to write to an affected block. For devices which have undergone a lot of writes before the fix, the users experience persistant freezing which may last from 2min to even an hour.

My issues seem consistent with that description. I've ruled out software bugs by trying safe mode.

My GT-N7100 16GB phone fits exactly the SDS definition. Since I have no warranty, what could be done to fix this problem? It's only 6 months old phone...

Exactly! According to this definition, your phone is not showing symptoms of SDS but merely demonstrating that the fix is kicking into action. Don't you think its weird calling it a "Sudden" Death Syndrome and then thinking it should have symptoms. The irony -_-

Since you said it seemed ok after a factory reset, I was thinking it might be something else. Not saying it's absolutely not sds, but as bushako said, it seems as it might as well be the protection kicking in, it has happened a couple of times for me too.
What you could try, is taking a look at last_kmsg immediately after booting after you get a freeze. If the log has no alarms or anything out of the ordinary, chances are it's the fix kicking in and blocking the bad commands sent to eMMC.

I see what you are saying. But if the prevention for SDS makes the phone unusable, isn't this just a lesser of two evils? Wouldn't this inevitably happen again and I would be better off sending this for warranty?

Sudden Death on my Note 2 sane Chip (non affected chip rev)

Hi guys,
I need a little help here. I have a Note 2 (GT-N7100). But recently, I face sudden death on ~40% battery level, and cannot be turned on again unless I plug in a charger. But when I do, the battery will start to charge at 0% battery level, so basically it looks like the battery runs out, suddenly, and turn the device down.
At first, I though this is a battery problem, so I bought a new one. Surprisingly, the issue persist. This is when I thought that it might be a software problem. I tried to revert back to stock (tried 4.3 and 4.4) but the issue persist. Using custom ROM, and it persisted as well.
Any thought and suggestion would be highly appreciated. Tried to look on the internet, but surprisingly, no Note 2 users seems to be having my problem (it differs from the actual SDS syndrome)
hmm. anyone? ideas or hint?
@d_noizeshakerz
I am not an expert at all
but maybe ( IC power ), it can be checked by power supply ( maintenance center )
and as I told you
it is only a hint as you ask above
Regards

Thanks bro for replying. I am now will going to replace the battery with a new original battery. If it persists, I am done. The phone can go die in peace. I purchased S7 Edge yesterday.

Screenshot?
Have you replaced the screen or how did you repair it? And no, I've never experienced such a problem.

Since it's probably a display bug I doubt that this would show the problem.

If you do a system wipe, and still have the issue, you'll either have to get it serviced or replaced... or strap a vibrator to it.
I had the same issue and its in the settings somewhere I can't quite remember where it was that I changed it

It's probably a hardware issue if you did a factory data reset and it still vibrates constantly after your done.. If you made any changes or settings adjustments then try putting them back to defaults, or uninstall anything you may have installed recently (maybe a rogue app).
You can try going to safe mode and seeing if it still vibrates all the time.
IMHO the simplest approach (if possible) is if you can get it replaced by Amazon I would just do that and not try to delve to much more into it.
Happened to me shortly after purchasing. Had to get phone replaced. Actually happened to quite a few people.

Yeah Samsung won't touch my international phone. Ubreakit said they'd fix mine, and for cheap. But fortunately for me, the seller was kind enough to replace the phone. And it stopped working after ten days of opening. Very irritating when something so simple, yet important and expected to work without issues can cause such a hassle.

Question Samsung Galaxy A 32 4 G has a blank/black screen after Android 13 update. Any ideas?

Hi everyone, the phone was working fine, it was left to do an update for 3:00 in the morning. Couple hours later realized phone was blank/ black screen. Followed steps to do power and volume down and all it did was vibrate. It vibrates when plugged in. Two technicians looked at it and said it was a screen problem but a new screen was tried and it only showed a charging sign and after that it went blank again. I am wondering if it was android update that breaked the phone or is it something else. What specific hardware failure or is this software failure?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
My cousin had a similar issue with a black screen when they woke up - however their phone automatically reset itself and lost all data while updated to Android 13 overnight.

Hi, Thanks for reaching out. Definitely seems to be a Samsung problem. This problem however cost me a phone. That's life. Thanks again.

tried a firmware reflash?
anyways yes. samsung is a **** and has given me terrible experience with my a32. they dont pay attention to midrangers at all pushing out broken ota updates. My fingerprint sensor is now bricked permanently (no like actually. downgrading firmware doesnt help. its just gone. its fine physically. according to logs but something else broke ig). Then that stupid mobile data bug. where if i was using mobile data jt would disconnect from the cell towers and reconnect. as if there was no service. i saw many people have this issue. I was forced to use a gsi. One ui 5.0 is still pretty terrible for this thing. its not optimized at all. I am waiting for one ui 5.1. the final big update for this phone. Samsung seems to be pushing it out for all the phones. even cheaper than this phone. but looks like they forgot abt it.
