Storage displaying incorrectly - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

Any data that is added to my phone is being calculated as a part of "system". A side effect of this is that I cannot clear data or cache for any individual applications (the options are always disabled for all apps). Is there a way to rectify this without wiping my phone?

I don't know what is being stored on your system partition because you can't mount or write to it. I do know fastboot flashing a full google image will first wipe the system partition and then re-write it directly lfrom from the image. If you edit the flash-all script beforehand your data will not be deleted. This is what many people do every month to update, including myself. Of course, if your bootloader is still locked you will have to do this first which will wipe your data.

Thank you for the suggestion. I'm not sure I know how to use SDMAID to fix this issue though. SDMAID is able to properly see the size of applications including their associated data as seen in the attached image. However, Android's storage calculation continues to not be able to see it. As seen in the attachments, the application in question has around 700 MB of data associated with it but I am not able to view or clear that data.

This is the method by which I regularly update and it has not fixed the issue for me. I don't believe that anything is actually being saved on the system partition. It's an erroneous calculation and display. For example, if I take a photo, it is still saved in the same location as before. However, the photos app will continue to show no associated data and the "system" partition will appear to grow as if the photo was added to it.
The closest similar symptom that I've been able to find on XDA (or anywhere on the web) seems to be here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/files-using-space-t3601549

I don't know I had the same issue and I used sdmaid because along with root it cleans the system folder. I'm also on a custom ROM with busy box.

So you used the "SystemCleaner" function? I tried that and it didn't seem to change anything. I wasn't sure what function in SD Maid to use to try to fix this.

How to clean the cache (globally) in the internal memory?

I think I should clean the cache a bit, i tried to uninstall some apps but maybe it isn't enough. The Android market is unable to download new apps while BlackDroid still works

I have the same problem, i installed quite a few appz and then removed them, now out of memory from left over installs and not half the appz as orig installed.
I'm interested in finding out this as one. This utility is badly needed.
Don't know how long before we will be able to choose location where to install appications i.e., ofcourse SD card.

We need it rooted fpr apps2sd, but still waiting so we must just be patient.
I don't know if it's the same thing you're talking about, but you can clear the cache from the recovery menu.
This does not require root:

But you cannot clear all caches at once. Still handy though.

Awesome find gogol, very handy indeed, less time consuming... would like to see a clean all feature though!
EDIT: Unfortunatly, Android does not offer the possibility to delete data of other applications (on unrooted phones) for security reasons ... the only way to clear an application cache is to call a system application which is allowed to delete it, that's the reason why several caches can't be cleared with one click, just like with this application.
Alternatively, instead of installing such an app, you can practically achieve the same results by going to settings>apps>manage apps
then menu and sort by size
the top 3 or so you can quickly clear and be done.
A quality utility, thanks

Make the Market download apks to SD Card

Hello everyone.
I've recently switched to the Data++ Hboot with 10MB cache. Ever since then I haven't been able to download large apps from the Market.
I was wondering how to make the Market save the APK's on the SD Card instead of the cache partition. If I remember correctly this has been implemented in a number of ROMs, including the Oxygen ROM to name one. Where would I change that?
Sorry for deviating from the topic, but I have this strong urge to ask you this: How did you get 10MB cache with Data++? According to alpharev.nl, Data++ gives 5MB cache....
On a side note, I also have 10MB cache but my apps are installing fine (with a little help from A2SD).....how big are the apps you're trying to download? Maybe I haven't come across "big" ones yet...

Oh I see they've updated their website. I'm using an older version of Data++ (System 180M, Cache 10M, Data 261M). I still have the img plus a screenshot of the website to compare MD5, if you're interested.
Well, it was just a guess. Downloads to Angry Birds (both versions) and Rocket Bunnies are not working, to name a few. Since they're all over 10MB I assumed it was due to the smaller cache partition. I'm also using A2SD btw.
Hmmm, they are not too big then (was expecting 20+MB).....I just downloaded those two apps couple of hours ago on my one and it's running fine even though I've only got 10MB cache.
Normally you'd need a file manager (like the one with Titanium backup or root explorer) to do the job of moving .apk files to SD..these are normally stored in /data/app inside the internal memory and requires root access to get them...but the files must be downloaded in the first place.
Is your system up-to-date? I too had similar problems until I did a complete flash-over and updated everything.... unfortunately I didn't work out the cause of it

Oh I see, I was under the impression the apks get saved on the cache partition. In that case, I should look for the problem elsewhere. Yes, I'm running the latest Sense ROM (2.29 with the 5 ending), but modified to suit my needs. I guess it could be related to that.
More info about the 'non-downloading'. When I click on install in the Market, the download icon appears quickly in the notification bar and then quickly disappears. Was this the same problem you were having?
In short....yes...that was the main sympton I had....the download icon disappears quickly....and it only happened to some of the apps
Have you tried rebooting the phone?...

Yes, tried that. Also tried clearing the dalvik cache and cache but with no success. I have found this while looking for a solution on Google. Seems someone else is having the exact same problem.

Hmm, yea. The thing that's really frustrating is I still don't know what the problem was in my case..if I did I could've been a little bit more helpful. In my "rage" I just flashed a new kernel and a new ROM and that sorted out the problem for me....didn't stop to wonder what was actually causing it.
EDIT: I think changing the kernel, especially, did it for me...
Hmm…
I have the same problem (except my /cache is 3MB so I can't download files larger than that).
Funny though, it used to work just fine (I have Angry Birds and flash for example), it has only recently started to act up.
If anyone finds a solution (possibly without flashing), I'll be quite grateful
P.S.
When my download fails (downloading icon simply disappears), my logcat shows DownloadManager reporting that there is not enough space (with about 60MB on /data) and then Vending complains about the file not being found (because DownloadManager didn't download it).
Seems like a bug in DownloadManager to me. It probably doesn't look up the cache (mine is in /data/cache IIRC) but uses the free space on /cache to determine if there is enough to fit the .apk.
I'm now working on same think. Need to Market downloading apps to SD card instead of /cache. So is there any tweak for this?
Yep.
Requires a little bit of knowledge about how linux handles mount points.
Basically, the easiest way is to bind mount a folder on the sdcard/data to /cache.
I get this .. I just clear the market cache ... go back into the market , all fine .
I normally have to " download " stuff 3 times , before it installs.

[Q] Storage Space Running Out, Insufficient storage, my phone trying to screw me?

So...
I've had this problem for a while now, getting worse from day to day. I've asked about this before, but it wasnt solved.
Basically my phone is taking up data in the background. Probably updating, downloading something. Its so bad, that if i dont turn off data on the go, my 1.5GB are used in a day. Sync is turned off at all times
And another side effect of that is, that all that data probably has to be stored somewhere. So Im getting the storage space running out error. Kinda annoying cause I cant use gmail, Cant install any apps(insufficient storage available) etc.
I really have no idea where all that data is(after searching through all the folders for a while now)..
I'm on the latest AOKP Milestone(4.2)
Thanks!
There are a couple things I recommend doing in your position. First thing I would do would be to get an app that allows for more informative breakdown of what is using the storage. Something like diskusage should do the trick. This will allow you to see exactly where data is going, opposed to "misc" Perhaps this will show exactly what is taking up the storage, since you are rooted perhaps backups are the problem.
If that doesn't tell you what you want to know, or if you think an app may be using data behind the scenes then the next step I would do is to use some sort of data usage monitor. The built in one may suffice, settings > data usage. If not there may be better apps out there, although to be honest I have zero experience with those.

Uploaded a pic what diskusage says. When i hit media it only opens the file manager and directs me to sd storage
BTW this what Onavo says has been consuming data this month:
Market Downloader - 800MB mobile, 2.4Gb Wifi, all in background - and no, i didnt download anything from the play store on the go and hardly anything on wifi - havent updated my apps in weeks b/c of missing storage
Android OS + Others - 530MB mobile and a whooping 12GB on Wifi! All in Background too.

It looks like you have some nested 0 folders in that pic. Perhaps cleaning that up will clear up some space. Side note, if you haven't updated your custom recovery in a long time it may not be a bad time to look into that.

If I were in your situation, I would probably just get a clean start. This also would get rid of the nesting problem I mentioned above.
- I would make a backup of my current setup, probably just using Titanium Backup.
- Backup everything I want to keep from my phone to my PC, going through the 0 folders.
- Use fastboot to flash factory images, allowing it to wipe everything in the process. The .bat file should do this automatically.
- Use fastboot to install a recent custom recovery.
- Push the sdcard backup from my PC to my phone.
From here you have a couple options, root and reinstall Titanium backup and restore some of your apps (no system data) or go back into custom ROMs. You could flash AOKP again, or pick a different ROM.
A bit heavy handed, but I think that would be the least time consuming option considering the problem(s).

Basically when 4.2 came out, it brought along multi-user functionality. Custom recoveries at the time, when wiping and installing ended up creating the nesting problem. Recoveries then were updated, which doesn't create a bunch of /0 folders (one existing is correct). This was a super common problem about a year ago when 4.2 came to be. There were hundreds of threads about this problem, with more detailed info about what happens, why, and how to fix it. Wiping everything is one of the solutions, and since this isn't your only problem, this would probably be the recommended solution.

I am not sure where you read that a wiping everything isn't possible, but whoever said that is all sorts of wrong. There are multiple ways to wipe things.
Just did what you said and it looks like everything worked! Everything is deleted, I have almost 13 gigs of free space, rooted my phone again and I'll probably install aokp or paranoid in a couple days.
No 0 Folders anymore and I'm sure as hell hoping that my data consumption will be fine now. I'll keep you updated on that in a few weeks again, but thanks for the help!
looks good thanks bud

Phone keeps asking for permissions after root

I rooted my phone using the pre-root image. Everything works fine, except when I install a contacts app, or a messaging app, the phone never remembers permissions I provide. Every time an app wants to modify the contacts for instance, I get a few dialogs asking for permission. This is really annoying and makes a lot of apps unusable.
Thanks.

I did that, but it doesn't help. Apps such as Whatsapp, Contacts+ etc are constantly requesting access to contacts. This mostly happens with contacts apps. I found a temporary fix by moving some apps to the system, but it's not a permanent fix as I can't keep doing this.
I think access to contacts has somehow become restricted to root, but I can't be sure.

Update SU binary? Or the SU app?
I'm having this issue as well. Looking forward to a solution.
Happening on my end, too. I think it's related to installing the system.img file without wiping the data partition. Of course, this could be addressed if TWRP were available for this device.
Going to try to re-flash to see if that helps. Apps that try to read contacts like Waze basically make my phone unusable because it keeps asking for permission even though I grant or deny until I perform a hard reboot.
Facing same issue here... Using latest FW WW... I believe we should be able to fix permissions from recovery maybe, but I can't find a way on how to do it as currently I can't use the device due to the ammount of permissions it's asking because of whatsapp.
Definitely moving apps to system solves the problem.
Can't find what to modify to fix this so far, however, it's related (of course) to the read/write permissions for contacts as it's not saving the configuration.

I just unbox my ZenFone 2 and I have that trouble.. how can I fix it.. I tried downloading the new firmware but my phone does not detect it.
Please help
I solved this problem while I was on the older firmware by doing the following:
1. Flash the latest pre-rooted image. Flash system, boot and recover!
2. When the phone boots, DO NOT sign up with your google account.
3. One you are at the home screen, go into setting and add your google account(s)
This fixed the issue for me. I also wiped the data and cache partitions before flashing but I'm not sure how that might have helped

At the end, I can solve, with this website: www asus-zenfone com/2015/06/ how-to-update-ota-without-bootloop-on-rooted-zenfone2. html (I put some spaces and I deletes . beacuase the forum not let me insert urls)
You only needs to do this steps:
flashboot flash fastboot droidboot.img
flashboot flash recovery recovery.img
flashboot flash boot boot.img
I don't need to do the rest of the explanation. (I had an error when try to install sytem.img but work well too)
I need to say that I am su. I don't remeber how I did it but I remeber that it is easy and I don't know if you need, to do these commands.
I hope that this, solve you too the problem. :good::good:

Question Should I spent time on recovering or it's not possible at all

Hello, there is my problem with OP9 Pro – phone was stuck with some bug and only way to fix it was Wipe Data. Now it's ok, but I do really need to restore photos and videos. Phone is NOT rooted.
After reading tons of information I'm not sure that it's possible to get data back. As I understand I need to follow next steps:
1. Unlock bootloader without wiping data again in order not to lose old structure.
2. Root device, or at least temporary root it.
3. Use some tools to search and restore photos.
But now I'm not sure that everything would be fine. Even the first step is not 100% guarantee that it's possible to avoid data wiping.
So, If there are someone who understand this better, could you please advice me what should I do? Should I waste tons of time or it's muck more likely impossible to do?
Thanks!

If you are not bootloader unlocked right now. All hope is lost since unlocking will force a wipe of data that can't be stopped.

I just wiped phone and restored some latest backup (which did not contain media ofc). I was reading about scenario, when we can backup current system, patch it somehow, unlock bootloader and keep old data somehow in place. But it looks so unstable for me.
The folder structure was destroyed when the data was deleted. Although the files still exist -if- they haven't been overwritten, they would be completely juxtaposed. A vast sea of files that could only be sorted by size and file type. No associated time stamps, exif data, original file names and no way to restore it. Let that sink in for a moment.
Just recovering a flash card with a 100 images on it and then trying to sort them is a major headache unless you have a photographic memory. The files names are gone. The recovered images will have a new assigned number generated that is unrelated to the file's original name. Now imagine trying to do that with a 100gb jigsaw puzzle from hell.
Always redundantly backup critical data to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC.

Yeah, thanks! Really, there is nothing critical, just default amount of family photos and videos (phone is my father's, I'm just investigating possibility of recovering).
And tons of different information is all across the web. Also, latest Android 12 is pretty new and I guess lots of articles are not suite for that phone.
So, I guess it's too overwhelmed even to try root phone and search files. Maybe, data value is lower that possibility to turn phone into a brick.

If you want the best possible outcome take it to a data recovery specialist. That's all they do.
Don't use any apps like FoneDoctor, they will find stuff but encrypt the drive $o only that app can unencrypt it.

Losing critical data is never pretty.
I've lost a database with decades of data on it. The only way to help prevent this is redundant backups.
Perhaps your father had backup them up deliberately or by happenstance to a PC or other device.
