I want it to read my lecture notes.
One workaround I've found is to copy/paste the contents of a document into an SMS to myself, and then ask Google Assistant to read the most recent message from me.
But that's super clunky. Is there a better way to have a document read aloud with the Google Assistant voice, whether by a third party app, or directly via the Google Assistant itself?

Hello,
If you say "text mom where are you" it will correctly send an sms to the contact. Is there any way to make it send a whatsapp msg to the contact instead of an sms?
thanks
It would have to be coded into the WhatsApp messenger Since Google doesn't own WhatsApp, then I don't think there is a way as of now.
I'm not familiar with that application, but until Google opens the API for Google Now, it will continue to send through the default SMS application.
Hope this helps!
Unfortunately, Google said at I/O that they don't have any plans to add an API for 3rd party access to Google Now.

This is no longer true. As of Wunderlist's latest update (a third-party to-do app), users now have the option of saving notes to Google Keep OR Wunderlist's through Google Now/Search provided they are installed.
Yes, I have researched this. I can get the unversalsearch apk and get it to work on my Note but then it disables or over rides the Google Now search and cards which I like.
Is there anyway to get google now to do a universal search? or have the option of both? Another reason for apple to suck it....as I type from my Macbook
I am mainly interested in the search feature working like it used to where it searches emails, texts, music, etc
Thanks for any help.

I dont think google now currently works quite like the old way the goolge search did. Although I agree, I'd like to have both if possible.

If you want google search to search what emails, texts, music etc.. do the following:
1. Press on the search bar (this will take you to the google now/search screen)
2. Press the menu button
3. Settings
4. Phone Search
from there choose what you want the phone to search for.
It will be nice when you can have it use multiple accounts. I don't like having to duplicate events and forward emails just so gn will find out everything I'm doing

thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the only option I have to search emails is using the stock email app. I use gmail. There is also no setting for searching texts
Guys, I love my Surface RT but the only thing that's missing for me is, well Google chrome of course, but since we can't get that (yet) I wonder if there is a translate function within IE just like Google chrome? Or is there a plugin available which I can install by jailbreaking my device?
I know that I can translate a website via Google translate website but its not working correctly for me.
Desktop-mode only, but IE has a feature called "accelerators" that let you highlight some text, then click a button (or press-and-hold or right-click on the text) and translate it, search it, map it, whatever. It's had this for about as long as Google Chrome has even existed, in fact! By default it uses the Bing services, but that's fully customizable. Tools -> Manage Add-ons -> Accelerators -> Find More Accelerators... will let you get to the Google ones, for example

Amazing both of them works better than via Google translate. Still waiting on a function like Google Chrome that translates it automatically but for now this option with the bookmark is the best!
Fingers crossed for a browser choice in win8.1
Hello, I know it might sounds stupid but : Can you install for instance Gmail, Google phone, Google contacts and of course have no bugs, because Google phone app need some kinds of drivers don't it ? To filter calls etc..
Thank you for the answer of this stupid question,
Cheers.
gmail and google contacts are already installed. google dialer you cannot install as it is exclusive to nexus devices although the stock dialer is pretty similar minus the spam features on google dialer.
If this has been discussed, I did not find it.
My Google assistant can not read my last text from a sender, but google search bar does. Also google search bar will change the temperature on my nest thermostat. Google assistant says it can not control this equipment. Am I missing some permissions somewhere?

Sorry no input but I would like to hear solution as I have Nest too.
Still no info? Assistant is a big deal on this device. I can't believe that the new all encompassing AI won't do tasks that regular ole google search does.
I don't have an answer for you, but I have also noticed some inconsistencies between google assistant and google now. It would appear they are not tightly linked. Nest thermostat is how i noticed it at first, same as you. Assistant searches the internet where as Google Now sets the temperature. What sucks about this is that "OK Google" opens the assistant, so no more hands free temp changes.
MKBHD noticed an inconsistency as well in his SIRI vs Google Assistant video. In short, my assumption is that Google Assistant is just new, and they either forgot to or haven't yet integrated all the features of Google now. I guess for now we wait.
When I look through apps, there's no mention of assistant... Even when showing system apps. How is assistant supposed to update? Only when we get system updates? That doesn't seem correct to me.

It's probably baked hidden into one of the Google apps like "Pixel Launcher" or something. Just a guess though.
So... Workaround found. Not sure if this was the way assistant was intended to work all along, but downloaded IFTTT, linked it up, and can now control my nest through assistant. All the possibilities with this app and assistant have me really excited!
Another discrepancy I found between the two... Google now can identify songs. Google assistant says can't identify songs yet. Google is supposed to be opening up for developers and third party access to the AI either November or December. I would think this is when Assistant will really blossom.
