restoring stock ROM to different baseband - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I have two Sprint L710s; one has baseband L710VPUDOH1 and one has L710VPUDND8. Both are running LOS 14.1. I have a OEM/stock nandroid from the OH1 phone, but not from the ND8. I'm trying to do a OEM Restore on the D8 phone, so that I can run a carrier activation.
When I restore the backup (made with OH1), then the ND8 phone boots into a stock ROM, but the wifi slider will not move to "on", and apps are crashing left and right (sounds like the system can't work with the modem). I'm wondering if I need to backup the bootloader and modem partitions from the phone that made the backup (baseband OH1), and flash them onto the ND8 phone? Or maybe even all partitions (since I'll follow with a twrp wipe anyways)?

That's happening because the boot.img doesn't match the system. You cannot update that way. You need to find a complete nd8 stock firmware .tar and flash it with Odin. Or even nj2 (which is the update after nd8).
Those files from the oh1 phone will not work on the nd8 one, too many differences.

Thanks, MadBat99. I did not find an Odin ND8 (it looks like most of the ROM sites are paywall now?), but I found an ND8 "one-click installer" from RWilco12, which worked great. I wonder if I can use that later on my OH1 phone (should the need arise); both ND8 and OH1 are after Knox.

It won't brick (as you said, after Knox) but the WiFi not turning on may persist. But since it's the whole firmware, it may work fine.

Looking for a wind 4.3 modem

I have a wind t889v, I am stuck on stock after taking a 4.3 OTA update, i rooted and flashed the 4.1.1 modem from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2061031 so that i could unlock my phone, but now I am stuck with this old modem since there is no link there for the 4.3 version. Does anyone have a link to the wind t889v 4.3 modem?
EDIT: I am going to try flashing a stock 4.3 wind rom for now, but how can i upload files to my phone? I have installed kies and kies3 but neither seem to detect it, and windows explorer does not show my phones storage. I have had to transfer files through my mega cloud folder in order to get them on my phone, but that is going to be a pain in the ass for a 907mb rom...
And my next question: How do I know what roms are flashable for the t889v after taking that stupid 4.3 update? I found this guide but its for a verizon note 2. I am rooted and I am hoping there is some customized odin flashable firmware for me

all roms are flashable while on the 4.3 bootloader. you will need to install a custom recovery (CWM, TWRP, etc). here is a link to the modem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2554226 you can flash this in said recovery

Oh alright, I suppose I can give it a shot. But I have been told its not possible to flash anything other than stock factory 4.3, for example here:
Baenwort said:
If your phone has factory 4.3 you can not downgrade to a lower version as the KNOX functionality that is built into the 4.3 bootloader will prevent the flashing of a prior version.
You can still root with stock factory 4.3 but you'll need to either trip the KNOX counter or use one of the more involved methods. Is there a reason you are trying to flash such an early version?

I have already rooted with saferoot, can i just flash the recovery and then custom images as normal?

what that is referring to is the bootloader. which currently can not be downgraded. install a custom recovery and you can flash rom zips not images. most roms do not have a bootloader in the zip so there will be no conflict

N7105, i317, and SGH-T889 ROMs are usually OK. Don't flash another device's modem. There is a whole mess of ROM options out there.
Make certain your APN is correct in other carrier designated ROMs. Don't flash recovery from automated recovery installers as they will not put the correct version in unless you are on a ROM with the correct build prop settings for the SGH-T889 (if your using a Tmo US device).

So I flashed DN3, it was for n7105, its an AROMA installer. I jsut realized that thats what you meant when you said dont flash automated installers. It required that i flash an n7105 modem to complete the installation. Can i fix my build.prop after? How do i flash this rom without using AROMA? aaah
EDIT: I am going to try to flash the wind 4.1.1 t889v over top of this using mobile odin since my modem doesnt work now.

I was more referring to ROM Manager and Goo Manager. ROMs that flash modems are atypical. Usually they leave you with a choice to install one of a couple choices or leave it as is. Sometimes they don't.
You may be able to find the 4.3 modem appropriate to your device around here somewhere. That will work much better than the 4.1.1 if you can get it to stick.

I flashed the wind 4.1.1 modem with mobile odin but i still have a "no network" icon. ill try to find a 4.3 wind modem and flash that. hopefully i havent bricked my modem, i thought this rom would be cross compatible. damn...
EDIT: I used mattlowry's 4.3 wind modem above, but still "no network" icon (the one that looks like a no smoking sign. not really sure what to do now. i was told this rom would work but i guess not. hopefully if i flash back to a t889v firmware i can get my modem working again....
any advice?

You could mobile Odin the stock image from sammobile or the root66 to flash everything but the bootloader. Kies recovery could maybe work. T889V is stubborn with modems IIRC. Teshx had problems with this very problem quite sometime ago IIRC.
This fits in my "this is a problem" category, backup and save your data.

yeah i did some wiping in recovery and managed to soft brick my phone, then using pc odin to flahs a stock image got my phone back to life and showed signal bars again, then i flashed the custom recovery back on. so at least i know i can save my modem when i do this again. i then tried replacing the modem.bin files in the dn3 istall zip with t889v modem.bin files, tried reflashing it with the new modem.bins but it still gives me the no network symbol instead of signal bars.

ROMs Removes Modem - Cannot Restore Modem

Ill admit that Im not the best at this, but Im not too new to rooting, roming, or flashing (so now you know I might be the reason). Out of all, I've never done anything like the Sprint Note 2 where flashing a ROM removes all phone info, IE. IMEI, Baseband Unknown.
I tried restoring EFS and Modem (which I backed up beforehand); manually installed modems; all to no avail. Basically I have to recover by starting from scratch using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591898.
What am I missing?
Anyone? I really hate the stock.
Personally I prefer using this stock MC2 unrooted ROM with flash count reset. Found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086769
This will put you back at pre MK4 state as well as flash the modem. bootloader, etc. From there you can re root, flash Phil's recovery 6.07.9 and flash a custom ROM of your choice. This is how I would do this and IS how I do this from time to time. I never use the stock unrooted MK4 due to the KNOX crap.

So the process in which I done this would cause such affect? The MK4 I used did restore everything; recovery, modem, etc.
I used Odin to load TWRP 2.7 recovery (let it root), booted to recovery again and installed Dr Katan's MultiTool to remove Knox, and then updated SuperSU. This is where I stand now and it's operating fine, just hate the crap Sung put in there.
Is TWRP no good for L900? is Phil's Recovery the defacto or just your experience? Just curious if Im doing something wrong or?
My goal is to have vanilla as I can have it with the exception of WiFi tether and a radio that doesn't suck.

Read the L900 TRWP thread for the last 6 months...and you will see issue after issue...and 6 months later it is still not fixed according to users. Funny thing, is this only effects L900 Note 2 users. AFAIK no other Note2s or other devices are effected.
Either use a 2.6.* TWRP build to flash 4.1 ROMs, or use PhilZ for AOSP ROMs.
I just wanted to point out that since you are back on the stock MK4 ROM you will not be able to use the built-in WiFi hotspot unless you subscribe and pay for it. You can't flash the MK4 hotspot hack on your current stock odexed ROM. You will need to flash a stock rooted deodexed ROM that has hotspot hacked already or you will have to flash the mk4 hotspot hack for a deodexed stock ROM.
I'm saying this because you did point out in your previous post that you wanted to be able to use the hotspot feature. There may be another tether app that will work without root but I'm not aware of any.
see my post in this forum

I made a post about my experience loading a custom rom. I hope it is of some help to you. I believe I also started with MD4. What I think they did starting with MD4 (possibly a bit earlier) is they have a partition for the carrier/radio, and that gets wiped out when you load other roms, so you lose your radio. If you go back to LJ4 and then load the other roms, you might have more luck.

[Q] Help!! ROM flashing problems

Before I get to the point let me explain what happened. I attempted to root my S3. It did work up until I got to the point where I was ready to flash a ROM and it didn't work. I received the "status 7" error on CWM and I receive an error on TWRP that means the same thing. So what I did since I couldn't restore from a backup that I would get bootloops from, I attempted to install a ROM that was .tar or md5.tar through ODIN which only worked for original firmware (given in the screenshot). I have managed to install this ROM on my phone through TWRP but unfortunately it is for TMobile and somehow my AT&T service works on it. Here is a screenshot of the phone. I have tried flashing "aokp_task650_d2lte_kitkat_6.3.2014" that is made for the AT&T S3 but no matter what I try to flash it will not flash. I have already tried doing the "ASSERTS" method but it did not work. Can someone please help me fix this issue??? :/

The hybrid firmware thing shouldn't really happen but for some reason, cross flashing between T999 (T-Mobile) & i747 (AT&T) sometimes happens without necessarily causing a brick. I would suggest you do a complete stock restore to AT&T 4.3JB firmware (UCUEMJB). Thereafter, you can go back to flashing your preferred custom ROM. Since you appear to be able to get to TWRP, you can first, from custom recovery, remove all existing firmware including OS and then reinstall the stock firmware. It appears the bootloader is still UCUEMJB so flashing AT&T stock firmware shouldn't be a problem. Please see the thread below for 4.3 stock restore...

So in this case, I just flash everything that it gives me correct? Is the stock ROM still rooted? If it is not then what rooting process do you suggest I go through? If it is a rooted ROM. Then do you recommend I unroot it and root it again or take some other alternative method? I really appreciate your help

It's a complete stock image which will take you to as near factory condition as you can get. This means it is unrooted. You would need to re-root after (successful) firmware installation. Prior to flashing the firmware, please remember to use custom recovery to remove all existing firmware including OS. Once you've restored the firmware, there are several ways to root but my preferred method is SafeRoot. You can find the download links and instructions to SafeRoot in the thread below ...

You can also try Option 2 in the thread below ...

I am running 4.4.2 on my S3 (AOKP Task650) but unfortunately I am receiving some battery drain. Is there a Kernel I could use to prevent this and save more battery? Which Kernel do you recommend most? Also I am having issues with my Data. I get "E" for edge in a 4G LTE area? Is there a radio that I can flash or APN for this to fix that problem?

[Q] No carrier/SIM support after 4.3 stock restore

My ATT SGH-i747 was rooted and running 4.4.2 until an OTA this past weekend soft-bricked the phone. Phone would boot to a blank screen but still allowed access to download and recovery modes, thankfully.
With help from this awesome forum, and a stock 4.3 flash via ODIN, thanks to enewman17's epic efforts and thread , the phone is back, but now won't recognize the SIM - and baseband version is "unknown" - I suspect I need to now go up to 4.4.2 to get the hw recognized by the sw. Went to ATT and they put a new SIM in but to no avail
CWM recovery is gone, but I can reload that easily enough...
Do I need to just flash the modem, or is the bootloader involved too?
Is there a single flash or .zip that will get the ROM (incl CSC and Modem) up to 4.4.2 in one shot?
I never really wanted to go this deep but here I am so now I'm looking for advice or direction as there are so many directions to look... thanks in advance!
Mismatch in firmware
Digging deeper, using Phone Info *Samsung*, I have noted the following
bootloader version: I747UCUFNJ1
baseband version: <blank>
pda version: I747UCUEMJB
csc version: I747ATTEMJB
skip a bit...
modem version: <blank>
hardware revision: <blank>
mobile operator name: <blank>
mobile network code: <blank>
So it would seem I have a mis-match of versions, where it seems all should be the same..
Would it be safe to flash to MJB following this thread?

Your modem (baseband) appears to have been compromised in the process of downgrading from Kitkat. You could try either of the following solutions...
1) Flash the UCUEMJB modem via custom recovery to return you to complete stock 4.3. You can see the modem file here ....
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23269279319197285
2) Do a complete stock restore to 4.4.2. You can find the stock update zip via the following thread ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-att/general/ucuemjb-to-ucufne4-firmware-update-t2808654
If you can reflash the 4.3MJB modem, you can check to see if you can get an OTA update to 4.4.2. Using Option 2 requires you to be on complete stock 4.3 so this may not work if you currently don't have the baseband/modem. I would strongly advise you stick to the custom recovery flashable files for now and avoid Odin. You would, however, need to restore custom recovery via Odin.
Hope this works for you.

Thanks for the detailed reply with links, Larry :good:
So I guess my plan of actions will be
1) re-install custom recovery w CWM to my external SD card as was previous
-do I *need* later version of CWM? Previous one of mine was 6.0.2.3, IIRC, that is what I can easily flash back to the phone
2) install .zip (from https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23269279319197285) via CWM
If that doesn't work, I was interested in the S3Rx ROM vs. a stock 4.4.2 ROM - is there any way to go straight to a custom 4.4.2 ROM or should I get the modem working in 4.3 first?
Lastly, Where can I find a later version of a CW Recovery Touch .tar to flash via ODIN? (third stoopid noob question in this post, I know...)
Attempt to flash d2att_I747UCUEMJB_bootloader_modem_4.3.zip via CWM Recovery FAILED with Status 7, Installation aborted...
Bootloader version: I747UCUFNJ1
Baseband version: <blank>

You aren't the first to have this issue. This is why I am still on NE4 and did not take the OTA to NJ1. The update is pointless anyway, all it does is patch the kernel so towelroot won't work anymore aside from updating the bootloader.
Since your bootloader is NJ1, that is your firmware which cannot be downgraded. If you try, you will brick. You have to work with NJ1 files here only. Sure you can flash older modems, but stick to NJ1. I suggest using ODIN to flash a custom recovery, then use enewman17's NJ1 .zip file in said recovery to reflash all the NJ1 stuff. Then do a complete factory reset. You might need to flash stock recovery to do the hard factory data reset, as I am not sure if it can be done in CWM or TWRP.
In the future, I suggest freezing the update and not upgrading until people on here do it and report how it's working or rather not working in this case.

Thanks for the response, Stoney :good:
I have CWM and TeamEpic v5 on external SD, so a version of custom recovery is there (CWM 6.0.2.3) - but do you have a link to enewman17's NJ1 .zip /recovery?
As far as freezing the updates in the future, yes. I tried to keep the OTA push from happening, apparently not ardently enough :crying:

Not a problem, glad to help when I can. I THINK this is the link you need: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-att/general/ucufne4-to-ucufnj1-update-t2941792
You might want to post in that thread asking if it works when you are already on NJ1 though, or get a hold of enewman17 via PM or something.
SOLVED!
enewman17 posted NJ1 modem .zip here, and now me has modem and cellular service again!
Question: can I update the thread tag from [Q] to [SOLVED] myself?

Can I flash the system and boot .img's if I'm on UCUEMJB?
Its been a looooooong time since I've touched an S3, and happened across a pristine example to use for work. I'm pleasantly surprised to learn I can flash a custom recovery on this still.
This works 100% from NE4. Don't know about coming from another but from NE4 it works.
Just updated to NJ1 THANKS @enewman17 you really are the d2att GURU!

I just update bootloader and modem to NJ1 using S3RX 4.0.
Work perfect and a big difference in signal.
Thanks.

Nice! So you don't even have to do the full rom update? I'm on NE4 stock debloated (NE4 bootloader + modem) and would just like to update the modem and bootloader ... safe to do so with the files in OP?

Sweet, just flashed it, worked perfect. Thanks!
Works flawlessly and as always thank you for your valuable time and efforts. Have a Happy New Year !
Question about the two zips
Flashable Rooted NJ1 system.img and boot.img is everything and root. S3 recovery is same thing just not rooted? Sorry if it is a stupid question, but I am making an emergency folder for my s3, and since i already upgraded to the NJ1 modem/bootloader, I have to be careful to flash an updated rom, right?

That's correct, you need to made sure the ROM don't include bootloader or modem.

Flashed the bootloader and modem but not NJ1 system and boot img files. Am currently on rooted NE4. Everything seems to be functioning properly but now WiFi tethering does not work. Anyone else having this issue?

First, thanks for all your great work enewman!
Second, somewhere between Paranoid Android 4.45 and SlimKat 4.4.4 I lost my GPS signal too. I was on some pretty old firware, so I followed enewman's instructions in this and another thread and got my bootloader and modem all the way up to NJ1. I checked my GPS function every step of the way, but it never came back.
Then i found this thread about GPS problems over in the CM forums:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.org/topic/99965-gps-issues-with-latest-nightlies/
Post #8 in the CM forum thread describes how to rebuild your NVRAM once you're in a stock AT&T ROM; appropriately enough, part of their solution links back to an older enewman post for an NE4 stock update. I followed their procedure exactly except I flashed the rooted UCUFNJ1 ROM from this thread. Once I rebuilt the NVRAM, voila GPS came back! I use an app called GPS Test that sometimes seems like it has an easier time getting a fix than others. Throughout the whole problem, it reported no satellites visible. Once NVRAM was rebuilt GPS Test sees 23 satellites and fixes in a few seconds.
Next, I restored SlimKat from a TWRP backup, and sure enough the GPS fix stuck. Now everything is working again . I did have to have GPS Test clear AGPS data to get more than 4 satellites visible at first in SlimKat.
Hope this helps you! As always read carefully, do your research, and follow all the steps carefully. Good luck!
ODIN?
Is there an ODIN file for this? I want to update my bootloader and modem to NJ1, but I don't have a custom recovery installed due to wanting to leave my warranty bit at 0 until the warranty is up.
Anything new worth noting in this vs. earlier KitKat builds (NE4, NE6, etc)?
Stuck @ ATT Logo
Flashed the NJ1 rooted zip coming from Cyanide v4, and it has been sitting at the logo for 10 minutes. Any ideas?

Did you flash the NJ1 bootloader & modem? If so then you need to backup your internal SD to a PC or ext sdcard, & (manually) wipe system, data, cache, dalvik, & internal SD in recovery (manually wipe everything but extSdcard) & then flash again. When coming from AOSP back to TW or TW to AOSP you should always do this. The data on internal SD is causing the issue! Make sure you back it up & do a 100% clean flash, you'll be surprised how fast it'll boot afterwords!! Need to be on NJ1 bootloader & modem, & never skip any when upgrading for example- MJB to NE4 to NJ1, If you skip you'll have trouble, & not the kind easy to fix!
